Character Appreciation Week: Jenny, Esther, the Night Nurse.

I have soo much love for Jenny, who takes in these two very strange teenage girls simply because it's the right thing to do. She might seem distant, constantly annoyed at everyone and like an outspoken pessimist, but she actually cares so much for Niko and Crystal, acting as the parent figure they so very clearly miss in their lives. The show would not be the same without her, the reluctant voice of reason in a crowd of chaotic teenagers.

Next up, Esther, who never fails to be iconic, always committing crimes like it's nothing and looking gorgeous doing it. She does some incredibly evil stuff (you know, like feeding girls to her snake and killing Niko) and yet still somehow manages to be a fan favourite. It's a rare thing to have such a great villain, a witch we all love to hate and hate to love.

And finally, the Night Nurse. She terrified me at the beginning. I was always thinking she'd be the more dangerous threat to the boys than even Esther or anything the witch could throw at them. But I don't know if it was her Scottish accent or her scenes with Kashi that slowly won me over, but by episode seven I had a lot of love for this infinite trans-dimensional being who at the end of the day is also only trying to do her job.

i'm going to keep asking questions unless you guys put a limit. i have so many. what are the teachers' favorite parts of the day?

This is a good question and you should know that the teachers all love their jobs… that being said, they are human (or we think so?) so…

Miss Nurse enjoys morning tea time before school. She’s gotta get her energy levels up somehow.

Miss Jenny enjoys sweeping up at the end of the day after the children leave. It’s one step closer to her going home, too.

Though it's not daily, Mr Mick actually loves special outings times the best. His favourite is the annual zoo field trip.

Oh! Also! We have a new face, Miss Maxine! As you can see, she is a sucker for comfort. She tells us that she is always cold. so that's why she wears comfy slippers and socks at school. Readers, what do you think her favourite part of the day is?

I love her so much. She is the gothic lesbian butcher. I have cosplayed her before and it is one of my favorites. I love how real she is. She doesn't hesitate to point or call something out. I also like how after she finds about ghosts and shit she is freaking as one does but she doesn't want to forget and rather freak out then be clueless.

Happy fifth day of Character Appreciation Week to Jenny Green, The Night Nurse, and Esther Finch!

I'm not going to lie—it was quite difficult to summarize my thoughts on THREE icons in one post, but I did my best! 🧡

For a show called Dead BOY Detectives, there is certainly no shortage of strong, nuanced, witty, captivating women in this show. Perhaps no characters display that range better than Jenny, The Night Nurse, and Esther Finch. Not only are they played by some of the most talented women I've ever had the pleasure to see on my screen; but they're also vastly different, showcasing a spectrum of personalities and motivations. Amidst the wacky teen antics they bring something to the table: Jenny brings protection and emotional guidance, the Night Nurse (despite technically being an antagonist) brings structure and rules in excess, but also is crucial in helping Charles retrieve Edwin from Hell…

…and Esther Finch? Well, she brings unapologetic and consistent revenge schemes, continually challenging our heroes, and a myriad of quotable one-liners that live in my head rent-free forever. All that to say, none of these women have cookie-cutter personalities or are resigned to background noise, and I loved every morsel of characterization we were given for them. I was left wanting more background information, quick to dream up future scenarios with them in the story because they're just that compelling. Today and every day, I'm thankful for these three women who helped enrich the Dead Boy Detectives universe! 🧡

the dbd crew absolutely lacks the ability to understand money. like edwin and charles haven't had to buy anything non-magical in 30+ years, crystal was the kind of rich to buy designer toothpaste if she felt like it, and niko was born and raised in japan with a very different currency than the states. needless to say, local father-figure-by-default jenny has her work cut out for her.
