Devlin House
📍125 1st St., New Westminster
Charles, Crystal & Edwin Frame Edit Courtesy of: @fear0phobia
Scenic House Edit Courtesy of: @every-moment-a-different-sound
Location bts:
While visiting Queen's Park for the 'Departing the Devlin House' frames, I was surprised to find the Devlin House areas are actually together. During filming the cast is facing the Devlin House correctly, and in the morning they gather by the park gate across the road.
Tumblr media
Please be respectful if you go to view this location as it is a residential house. I have full expectations that we can all respect people's property- including not going into people's yards or bothering the people that live there. I trust we can be a considerate fandom.

The cameo that pushed me to actually start this project. Since I sent this cameo ask, I have been hard at work scouting and I can't wait to share the edits and photos!
Definitely still a work in progress (those forest scenes are difficult) but I hope everyone will get some joy out of the scene locations already discovered 💖
In my first cameo I outed myself as living in Vancouver and the fact that I'm starting a photo series of Dead Boy Detectives locations. I asked if they could share any hard-to-find filming locations with me.
I honestly wasn't expecting them to remember anything since for them it's basically random places from two years ago, but George went out of his way to look some of them up. Honestly I appreciate him so much (and I need him to drop me that list)!
I had a few of these on my list already but definitely some new ones! To me the cameo was worth the price just to get a lead on the swing set/Shelby's cemetery location and at least a general location for the cannery. I cannot tell you how many hours I have spent looking at warehouse photos...

Charles’ crush on Edwin is starting to get a little out of hand. Turns out the internet is just as enamoured as he is. (Or: the one where Edwin accidentally goes viral after a couple of very confused photographers take some photos of him at an event. As one does.)
part 2 of Honey, are you coming? ongoing series

Pt. 2 of my Dead Boy Detective covers inspired by teen detective novels. More info and reference photos under the cut
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve continued watching this series on repeat while creating the novel covers. I really didn’t think I would get through all the episodes, I often stop projects part way through. I might do another post of the covers in chronological series order, as opposed to the order I drew them in.
Style, colors, and very often the actual poses are pulled from covers featuring The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and The Three Investigators.
I don’t know if you can tell, but I struggle pulling the concentration to add details to make forests look realistic. Something about trees takes more energy than I normally have, haha.
I don’t really have a lot more to add, but thanks for all the love on the first collection, it’s been very fun.
Also, happy pride month 🌈🌈🌈

Image 1: An orange-red spiral staircase descends down into darkness. Charles Rowland is higher up, wearing his typical hero outfit; red shirt, black trousers and coat with pins. He’s holding a yellow lantern, and looking behind him anxiously. Edwin Payne follows behind, shrouded in shadow, wearing white nightclothes. At the top in yellow italics is “Dead Boy Detectives”, and in off-white bold caps “THE CASE IF THE VERY LONG STAIRWAY”.
Image 2: A blueish green forest at night, a full moon peaking over the trees in the top left corner. In the foreground to the right stands Crystal in her purple varsity jacket and floral turtleneck, hair half up in buns. Next to her Charles is wearing his hero outfit, polo shirt is fully black. They both look on hesitantly. In the mid ground Edwin, wearing his long brown coat is looking up at the furious glowing blue ghost of Shelby. At the top in yellow italics is “Dead Boy Detectives”, and in off-white bold caps “THE CASE OF THE TWO DEAD DRAGONS”.
Image 3: Crystal and Charles sit inside of a sigil circle on the blue floor of a green subway car. She’s wearing a red jacket, yellow shirt, and tan pants. He’s wearing his hero outfit. Charles is facing Crystal, while she’s angled away from the viewer, both are looking at sheet-ghost David the Demon, who is covered in the same sigils as the circle they sit on, running out the open subway door. At the top in yellow italics is “Dead Boy Detectives”, and in off-white bold lettering “The Case Of Crystal Palace”.
Image 4: A green forest, and brown earth, illuminated by the light of a magically summoned golden chandelier. Under it is The Cat King, brown hair angled into cat ears, wearing a white turtleneck sweater and sparkling black overcoat with red stripes. His arms are folded behind him, and his yellow cat eyes are gazing with feigned disinterest at Monty Finch and Edwin. Edwin is wearing his long brown coat, complete with brown vest and trousers, white shirt and blue bow tie. His cat bracelet is visible on his wrist. Edwin stands in an apprehensive crouch. Behind him Monty, long black hair, red scarf, and black coat, is glaring at The Cat King over his shoulder. At the top in yellow italics is “Dead Boy Detectives”, and in off-white bold caps “THE CASE OF THE CREEPING FOREST”.
Image 5: A series of covers on a white background. From left to right, "The Case Of The Dandelion Shrine", "The Case Of Devlin House", "The Case Of The Dandelion Shrine" (alt cover), "The Case Of The Hungry Snake", "The Case Of The Lighthouse Leapers", “The Case Of The Two Dead Dragons”, “The Case Of The Very Long Stairway”, “The Case Of Crystal Palace”, and “The Case Of The Creeping Forest”.
Image 6: A series of book covers on a white background: “Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators in The Secret of Skeleton Island”, “Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, The Ghost of Blackwood Hall”, “Nancy Drew, The Mystery at Lilac Inn”, “The Hardy Boys, While the Clock Ticked”, “The Three Investigators in The Mystery of the Coughing Dragon”, “The Hardy Boys, The Disappearing Floor”, “Nancy Drew, The Hidden Staircase”, “The Three Investigators in The Mystery of the Laughing Shadow”, “The Hardy Boys, The Secret Panel”, and “The Hardy Boys, The Haunted Fort”.

Tags: Post-Season/Series 01, Fix-It of Sorts, Grief/Mourning, Texting, Based on a Tumblr Post, Angst, Hopeful Ending
Summary: The first time she texts Niko after...after, it's because Crystal walked by a small Japanese bookshop, and one of the books on display had been the next volume to a series Niko had been reading. The sight of the book is like a knife to Crystal's heart, and yet she still takes out her phone and snaps a photo of it anyways.

summary:
Charles wakes up in a bathtub handcuffed, hungover, and with no idea how he got there. He must piece together clues and escape before something truly terrible happens. As he investigates the previous night, he can't help but wonder if he really wants to know the truth. -- "Two," he says, taking a deep breath and letting it run through him. He went to a party last night, he's certain of it. He must have stumbled into the bathroom after drinking too much. This had to be a weird prank. He'd never drank so much he blacked out before, though. If his dad caught him sneaking back into the house drunk he'd have been murdered. "One," he exhales and feels some of the fear leave him. He takes stock of his own body, patting himself down around his wet trousers and trying to focus on the feelings.

“It was buried in the wardrobe,” Charles thinks aloud. “Who would he need to hide it from?”
“It is where I used to hide things, sometimes.” Edwin has glanced down, away from the photos. A touch embarrassed, Charles can tell.
He smiles. “What on earth did you have to hide, mate?”
“Quite a lot, it turns out.”

Limbo
📍Orpheum Theatre - 884 Granville St., Vancouver
Frame Edit Courtesy of: @idliketobeatree
Location bts:
The Orpheum has two entrances, with the Granville Street lobby being the filming location for Limbo. The Limbo desk was built between two pillars at the top of the stairs in front of the concession area that resides there. This location offers tours where you get to enjoy some behind-the-scenes areas and local history.
The Granville lobby is only 7.6m (25ft) but uses mirrors and a high ceiling to appear larger- the majority of the theatre was built on Seymour Street (a cheaper location). The Orpheum has 3 resident ghosts and is named after the mythical figure Orpheus, which seems apt.
This location features an antique Wurlitzer organ also named 'Orpheus' which is the only theatre organ in Canada that is still in its original home.
The tour was fast so I also bought a Symphony ticket for a different day and spent the first half of the show in the lobby. It was amazing to take photos while Orff's 'O Fortuna' with full orchestra and choir filled the theatre lobby and really added to the grandeur of the space
Bonus bts:
A mini location from actual Dead Boy Detectives filming bts. Golden Age Collectables and the DC sign has been a staple on Granville Street for many years, and the logo is still in their window display as of February 2025. I'm including it here as it is only a few doors down from The Orpheum Theatre. It's kind of fun to think how two pivotal locations were so close together.

Batman: Arkham Echo - Ch.3: Cauldron of Bats
I don’t normally post a lot about stuff that are more personal projects. Normally I would post this on my alternate blog, CiphenWriter21. However, given how many people who are Batman fans or who are fellow writers and fans of the Arkham Series. If you want to check out ‘Batman: Arkham Echo’, the fanfic is currently on my Wattpad, CiphensNarrative, and is currently a work in progress.
Warnings ⚠️: mentions of attempted sexual assault, violence and murder, one mention of original character(s) here (this is a BatFam chapter; she is shown in a photo)

~~~~~~~
Gotham was never short on criminal activity, unsolved mysteries or domestic terrorism. The city that many considered their home was also seen as another man’s playground. One person’s workplace could be another’s primary target or testing ground for experiments. One couple’s apartment can become a flaming inferno within a matter of minutes or even seconds. A double murder could occur in an alley somewhere and the only survivor could be an eight-year-old boy.
A young boy who would grow into a man with a sense of justice and his own moral code…
A man who would become a symbol, a seeker for reform and a firm believer in hope and giving others something to believe…
Standing atop of a gargoyle on a tower, a figure looked down at the darkened city below. Pointed animalistic ears protrude menacingly from the face-concealing cowl, coming from the sides and the top of his head. A long dark cape bellowed swiftly into the brisk late winter breeze behind him, complimenting the black bat symbol on his warm gray chestplate. His armored boots pressed into the stone of the decorative stone beast. Given the amount of shadow obscuring the rest of his otherwise disguised face, his eyes looked like endless voids of ivory. To a cowardly criminal, he appeared to be a living shadow, a deadly denizen of the night.
This was Gotham’s emblem of hope and justice, a talented and inquisitive detective, the Dark Knight himself… Batman.
After listening to the GCPD police radio, he learned that a dead man was discovered in an alleyway. Apparently, he had appeared to be killed during a supposed altercation. A squad of officers was on their way to the crime scene to investigate and identify the victim and the motive. Batgirl and Robin were on the move to the location, the same way as him.
Grappling and gliding from building to building, Batman was able to get to the scene in record-breaking time. The police squad had just pulled up and were cuffing one of the men at the scene. The GCPD commissioner, Jim Gordon, steps out of his vehicle and out towards the crime scene, a cup of coffee in his hand. Everyone was getting the scene ready as one officer began putting yellow ‘Caution’ tape up. As this was happening, Batgirl and Robin landed at the far end of the alley.
“Jim…” Batman said evenly to the commissioner as his eyes scanned the walls of the buildings.
“Batman…” Gordon replied back with a similar cool tone.
“Commissioner…” Robin greeted warmly, his voice reassuring and ever laid-back.
“Robin… Batgirl…”
“What happened here, Jim?” Batman asked, hoping to find an explanation as soon as possible.
“Two sex offenders… one’s dead, the other has a dislocated jaw and broken teeth. My guess is as good as yours.” The commissioner explained before taking a swig of his coffee. Batman trekked over to the crime scene, looking for any clues or evidence.
“Their intended target fought back?” Batgirl questioned, curiosity peaked at the possibility of an offense gone wrong.
“That’s our working theory. But, we’re also keeping an eye out for potential conflicts relating to other crimes that Tom and Jerry here have on their records.” Jim stated, a gurney carrying the bagged body of the dead man wheeling by.
Meanwhile, Batman was analyzing the evidence he had found. The DNA from the blood samples of both victims belong to Devin Fryer and Simon Halls, two sex offenders originating from Gotham. Both were documented in the GCPD’s records, as well as profiles at Blackgate and Arkham Asylum. Other offenses included, but were not limited to, drug trafficking, robbery and murder.
Additional evidence shows that Fryer and Halls were attempting to corner a girl. A fact that was confirmed by the presence of a woman’s size seven-and-a-half boot print in a pile of wet sand near the dumpster. When he scanned the body of Fryer, he had severe trauma to the top of his head. Judging by the blood splatter by the garbage disposal, the brick wall was the point of impact. But, that wasn’t all…
Fryer had a red irritation mark around his neck, almost like a rope burn. This wound was likely made from a piece of cloth, such as a coat sleeve or a scarf. The item was also used to slam the victim’s head into the wall, as well as to give Halls his injuries. Shortly after, Halls was knocked unconscious by another force. However, Batman couldn’t identify who was behind it.
‘Either the girl was defending herself and didn’t know her own strength or she was that willing and ready to kill.’ The bat thought, doing a once-over of the evidence. He wanted to make sure he didn’t miss a single thing
“Is there any security footage we could look over? Maybe we find their target that way,” Robin said, looking at the cameras on the electrical poles.
“That’s a negative. Most of the cameras around this part of town are broken and haven’t been replaced in years. Mayor has been trying to get new ones installed, but the budget won’t cover it. Our best bet is the living victim, though I don’t think he will cooperate,” Gordon explained, pointing at the delinquent in the nearby police car.
Barbara, from under her Batgirl cowl, glared at the criminal, sitting in the backseat of the law enforcement vehicle. Her temperament was steadily swelling to the surface, the only thing holding her back was her shared sense of morality with Batman and Robin. She couldn’t believe that this man and his dead buddy tried to take advantage of a young girl. Sure, they were unsuccessful, their target not being a pushover and defending herself. But, it still disgusted her that these criminals only see women as objects for their own pleasure. She was lucky that she had male friends and family who respect and treat her like a person.
“Maybe, we need to give him some incentive…” Batgirl whispered, her tone taking on a serious and foreboding guise.
The second Bat and the accompanying bird moved over to the cop car holding the perp. Robin knocked on the guarding officer, pointing towards their new convicted prisoner. The officer then nodded, rolling down the backseat window to allow the duo to interrogate Halls.
“Mr. Halls…” Robin called as he walked up to the open window next to Batgirl. Simon looked up at the two vigilantes, his eyes bearing the smallest glint of fear and confusion. His tone of voice, however, contradicted his true feelings that his gaze provided insight into.
“What do you want?” he growled bitterly and painfully through his damaged mouth and broken teeth.
“The girl you and your buddy tried to jump… what did she look like?” Robin asked with a direct snap of his tongue.
“Why the hell should I tell you?”
“Well, I don’t think you want to be ripped from the car and interrogated by the big one. Might end up worsening that cocky and confident mouth and jaw of yours. And I don’t think you want another fractured bone or an expensive hospital bill. So, if you tell us now, you can avoid adding insult to injury… quite literally,” Batgirl added, her voice even with something that could be interpreted as bordering near venomous.
Halls’ eyes widened as he glanced between the two young vigilantes, trying to determine if they were serious. Their eyes gave off an intense aura of silent rage and determination. He then looked at the officer at the wheel, who did nothing but nod. When that confirmation was made clear, he submitted to the fact that he was backed into a corner.
“Alright. She was around sixteen or seventeen…”
Of course, they went after someone that young, Batgirl thought bitterly.
“Her skin was tanned, I think. Brown hair an’ eyes. She wore all black and had glasses on. She used her scarf ta’ strangle Devin! She then tried ta’ come ‘fter me… her eyes… It was like watchin’ hellfire blaze! I’d never been scared like that before in my life! The Bat’s the only one who could’ve compared!” Halls admitted, his face expressing fear and anxiety of what had happened.
Batgirl fell silent upon hearing the description of the men’s assailant. There was something about the mental image she came up with that didn’t sit well with her. Some part of her felt as if she knew the person they were giving details about. She just didn’t know why or how. It was something in her mind’s eye she couldn’t figure out… something she had missed… something she had overlooked…
“Did you get anything from the witness?” came the brooding tone of Batman. He stood behind her and Robin, waiting for the information he needed.
“Yep. More than enough for a police sketch,” Robin chimed, his laid-back aura returning tenfold.
“Good. The GCPD should be able to find them and get some answers. I need you two on patrol, keeping an eye out for anything.” Batman instructed, grabbing his grapple gun. He pointed it upwards at a nearby building and pulled towards the rooftop and disappeared among the skyline. Shortly after, the Boy Wonder and Young Bat grappled onto a nearby rooftop for scouting.
“Hey, Barb… about this new case…” Tim suddenly spoke as they landed flawlessly on the rooftop.
“What’s up?” Barbara asked simply, standing up and examining the rooftop for anything unusual.
“When the perp was giving the description of the girl they targeted, you looked like you saw a ghost. What’s going on?”
The silence that filled the air around the young duo was thick and could’ve been pierced by a bullet. Batgirl began to find a way to best explain what was going through her head. She searched and scoured for words and phrases to lay down what she was feeling and thinking about. She looked for ways to best translate her anxieties and suspicions to her fellow partner. She wondered if what she was about to say would come back to bite her.
“Before… Before I came to the crime scene, I was doing some grocery shopping. As I was leaving, my bags broke from beneath. A teenage girl approached me and offered me one of her reusable bags. She even helped me clean up my mess. This girl… she looked exactly like how the perp described. Down to the black clothing and glasses…”
Robin’s eyes widened ever so slightly, attempting to process what Batgirl had just said. However, as quickly as his shock came, Robin immediately sought logic, “Barb, it’s probably just a coincidence. Gotham is huge and a mixed bag, meaning the runaway victim could be anyone. Plenty of women fit the description we got.”
“You’re probably right. But, I just hope she’s okay and that she doesn’t get into too much trouble. I mean, it was self-defense. For all we know, she probably didn’t realize that she had killed him or that he died at all.” Barbara answered, her worries clear as the water from the ocean.
“Well, nearly getting assaulted like that… gets the adrenaline pumping…”
“Yeah. Back to patrol, did Batman tell you if we were looking for anyone in particular?”
“Other than Joker, no. We’ve been trying to capture him since you and I attempted to on Valentine’s Day. And Harley hasn’t been cooperating with the GCPD.” Robin stated, the memory leaving a bitter taste in his mouth. Batigirl was no different as she had fallen silent, recalling how she and Tim had to rescue her father, Jim Gordon, and his team of officers without Batman’s help. Joker had ambushed them at the GCPD, pairs and trios of officers locked in elaborate traps and unfinished theme park rides to test if she was worthy of her mantle. It was taxing and an experience she didn’t want to go through a second time. However, last month’s trial wasn’t the only burden on her mind…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wayne Manor stood proudly upon the hill it was built and over the nearby trees. Its dark wooden exterior with gothic finishes gleaming from the early light of the moon. Its sprawling cemetery was a monument to previous generations of Wayne who lived in the lavish home. The lights within were warm and beaming through the wide array of windows lining the floors of the mansion. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, no strange shadows or sudden rustling of the bushes. That was until the firm silhouette of a man passed by the rightmost windows of the manor.
Within the spacious adobe, a lone man in a suit with salt and pepper hair was tidying and dusting the hallways. He dusted the portrait frames and the various tables with assortments of vases and other priceless antiques. The dust and grime collected like a light sheen of snow or an extra skin on the wood. However, with the feather duster, it all got whisked away into the air or onto the ground below. However, as he moved further down the hallway to clean, he became more wary as he got close to a particular set of doors.
As the doors came into his field of vision, he swallowed the aching lump in his throat. His eyes gleamed with a dampness that indicated sorrow or guilt, but it never spilled over. His heart pounded and his throat throbbed and swelled from the lump that had been forming within. As he took a deep breath in before releasing it, he clasped one of the doors’ knobs and turned it counterclockwise. With a faint exhalation of air, he pushed the door open. A wave of sights and scents hit the man like a crashing wave on the sea. As he walked in, the sentimental value of the opened room only got him to feel worse.
Shelves and shelves of books lined the left and back walls of the bedroom. Occasional nick-nacks and collectibles separated the books by genre, publication year or name of the author. The bed was untouched and neatly made, no sign of a person having rested on the mattress in a long time. Not a single wrinkle in the blankets and sheets, while the pillow has no divots that matched the shape and size of a head. The wooden desk was collecting dust, the laptop on top becoming one with the snowy fibers and the desk. Other than the slowly formulating sheen of gray, the bedroom was spotless and in order. Unusual until the man realized that this room had belonged to a studious teenage boy who never had a safe space to call his own.
Clutching the duster in his hand, he got to work freeing this abandoned room of its cloudy prison. He started with the large, nearly endless bookcase, dust and specks dancing in the air as he brushed the woodwork. He was delicate and methodical as he cleaned and polished the now newly touched room. He swiped his duster over the head of the bed and the matching nightstand. Fluff and fibers invaded the air before gracing the floor that was still relatively coated in dust bunnies.
As he walked past the wardrobe, he felt that one of the doors was partially open as his arm lightly grazed it. He heard the scrapping of something metallic on wood and the sound of a metal lock hitting and splintering wood. Turning back to the dresser, he looked at the skewed door and walked up to the dresser. Placing his hand on the door’s knob, he slowly pulled it open with grace and respect. The person who once lived in this room and ran through the halls and gardens on the estate was no longer among the living of the manor after all…
Despite being slow and methodical, the mystery object in the closet came tumbling out. It hit the floor with a wooden and metallic crashing sound that reverberated harshly at the man’s feet. Scraps and squares of glossy paper fell from the open lid of the fallen chest, leaving a collage of white leading out. Some of the papers appeared to have something printed or pressed on them. However, the older gentleman was too focused on the mess he had unintentionally made to focus on that, softly proclaiming with a British tone, “Oh, dear lord…”
Getting on his knees, he turned the chest back into its proper position, open lid now closed and the top facing up. He then placed his focus on the pieces of paper and getting them back into the chest. It wasn’t until he touched the paper that he realized that they weren’t original strips of paper. The glossy texture and the colors forming figures and locations were Polaraids. Most, if not, all of them have the same people in them and the various activities they did together. One was a boy that he recognized, his dark hair and blue eyes ingrained into his brain. Yet, the brunette girl standing front and center in his arms wasn’t ringing any bells and raising any unwanted alarms. But, judging by the smile on the boy’s face, she was someone of great importance to him.
‘A potential acquaintance from outside the manor and the youth academy, perhaps…’ he pondered whilst holding the photo.
“Alfred…” A voice came through the silence of his thoughts. The tiniest earpiece blinked with a red light within the cavity of the man, Alfred’s, ear. He then pressed down on the blinking red light and began to speak, “Yes, sir?”
“Are you in the Batcave?” The rough voice of Batman came through Alfred's earpiece.
“No, sir. I’m currently in the manor, doing some light spring cleaning…” He didn’t specify where in the home he was. He knew mentioning it would bring back painful memories and feelings of guilt.
“I’m on my way to the Batcave. I need to use the Batcomputer to look through the evidence I gathered from the crime scene.”
“I will meet you down there, sir.”
Looking around the room, Alfred smiled sadly at the now more clean but still dormant room. Once more, the painful lump began to swell up in his throat. So many memories and so many regrets were linked to this room and the person who once called it theirs. Now, all that Alfred could hope for was that said person was in a better place, no longer suffering and in pain.
Maybe he found his way towards a better life…a better beginning… maybe somewhere he can call ‘home’, wherever that may be…
~~~~~~~
Oh, Alfred… if only…
The fic is now at 3 out of 4 chapters, oops, had to split it! Crime scene photos are described in this one.
As they prepared to boost Crystal over the fence, Monty cawed three times, the signal that meant someone was coming. Niko spun to look and saw a girl turning the corner, walking towards them under the streetlights. "Maybe she won't spot us if we hurry," Crystal murmured, and put her foot up on the crossbar of the fence, bracing to jump. "Hey, uh," the girl called, walking towards them, "I don't think you're supposed to be going in there after dark." Niko took a breath, and turned to meet the girl. Kingham? Litty? Turn it up. I need her attention on me.
Chapter 7
Her college soon came into view. The parking lot was packed to capacity, with various makes and sizes of cars clamouring for space between the faltering white lines. The college’s wooden sliding doors opened and Viola found herself in the hallway, its cracked grainy floors suddenly more appealing than the influx of people standing on it. The atmosphere was solemn, everyone silent and grim-faced, the occasional one fraught with worry. Faces fit for a funeral service. Probably in response to Lannie, although she wasn’t dead, though.
Yet.
Banishing the dark thought, she surveyed her environment. The swing doors to the auditorium were wide open, its insides containing multiple lecturers and unfamiliar students setting up bunting, fold chairs and other things, an air of disquiet in its wake. She recognized her head lecturer, with his rumpled jean jacket and drooping Nietzsche-like moustache.
Approaching the spacious, squeaky linoleum floor of the auditorium, she spotted the familiar head of blue-black hair, and skirted around the folded chairs towards him.
Colin straightened, blinking profusely at Viola. A greeting.
“I need to talk to you.” Viola glanced about her at the amount of people who were potentially listening.
“In a few minutes, sure.” He gestured to a stack of folding chairs still unfolded and tucked
neatly in the corner. “Still have to finish this off. That okay?”
She nodded in understanding, before swiftly backing out and sitting on the now-empty bench situated beside the doors. A display of the Erasmus+ places was suspended above the bench, protected with Plexiglas. On an average day, she would stare at the photos of smiling students and foreign places for ages, envisioning herself there, brave enough to have fun in majorly unfamiliar settings and new experiences.
“Said what happened to Harlan, huh?”
Viola looked to see Cora Verdon, an acquaintance slash occasional ally. Her red hair was significantly brighter than her naturally dark roots, and her spectacled face was staring intently at Viola.
“Yup.” Viola wasn’t interested in entertaining a conversation with her, her focus still on the Erasmus+ project.
“It does make sense though, having a little memorial for her..” Cora continued, brushing the coloured pixie cut from her face. “I mean, she was here in my class for a few. Then, nothing.”
Viola tore her eyes away and fixed them on Cora. Memorial? But most importantly…
“She used to be a student?” That would explain the vigil-like air to the auditorium. With Harlan being somewhat of an ex-student, the college would naturally feel obligated to have somewhat of a vigil for her. Or something.
“Yeah. You didn’t know?”
Viola shrugged, trying to keep her voice casual. “Never knew.” She really was a student?
Before she could process this information, Cora’s attention soon turned to a group of boys, who were casting furtive glances at the pair. “Hey, I gotta go. Talk soon?” Without waiting for a verbal response, she stalked off, Viola staring at her retreating figure.
Sitting on the bench, Viola felt like a ghost, invisible to staff and students alike who whizzed past, all preoccupied with their respective tasks and responsibilities. Her others lecturers nodded in greeting, but didnt stop to exchange words.
Scrolling through her phone, she then saw the notification.
“Of course. When would you like to meet?”
Viola’s brain scrambled. It was at the back of her mind. Now here it was, demanding an answer. Her heart thundered in her ribcage. Venturing into new territory. Actually speaking to a reporter. How would she respond? Will she be taken seriously, or will she be laughed off as a wannabe detective? Belittled? She took a deep breath.
No time like the present, she supposed. She scheduled a time, typed it, and shut off her phone, her leg bouncing with new nerves.
It was about 15 minutes later when Colin walked out of the auditorium, his breathing slightly laboured. As soon as he saw Viola, staring into space, he slid into the empty space beside her. He hesitated, before putting an arm around her. Her brows were scrunched up, a sign of her thoroughly thinking.
“What are you thinking?,” he asked lowly, careful not to dislodge her flow of attention.
So she did. She told him all her thoughts: her lack of immense emotions, seeing the body. She’d even forgotten about seeing the dead body, with all of her focus being on Harlan, going to her house, her fear of being interviewed, her day being ruined, texting the reporter. When she’d finally finished, the word that came to mind to describe her current state of mind was ‘frazzled.’ The acts of slowing her suspended thoughts, translating them into tangible words, before conveying them to Colin seemed monumental.
“Did you mention the dead body to anyone?”
Viola shook her head no.
He paused for a moment, his arm squeezing Viola firmly as he thought.
“What do you need?”
Did I hear that right? “I don’t understand. Are you gonna help?”
“Don’t get it too twisted. See, I’m not going to stop you from pursuing it. I know that you’ll pursue it, even if I tell you otherwise. Just remember the potential consequences. I can help from the side-lines, but if push turns to shove, I know nothing about it.”
As much as it disappointed her that he wouldn’t actively be involved with something so important to her, Viola agreed. So she told him her next moves: going to the police and covertly asking for information, meeting with the reporter.
“Are you sure?”
She nodded, albeit a little hesitantly.
He fingered her navy blue overcoat. “Olivia Pope today, yeah?”, he said, changing the subject to one familiar.
Viola nodded again. A coping strategy she had in navigating her surroundings was embodying a fictional character, copying everything from their mannerisms to their outfit. The sassy yet intelligent Olivia Pope was chosen today, the only difference being that Viola’s coily Afro hair was packed into an updo, affectionately nicknamed ‘the pineapple’ by Colin.
“Good choice.” His gaze bored into hers as he said it, a sign that he was being genuine and not sarcastic.
Colin looked at his watch. “Harlan’s vigil will start soon. Wanna come?”
She nodded, and let Colin place a firm hand on her and steer her towards the now darkened auditorium.
David Pevsner: Quasi-homophobic roles, older gay guy roles, gay theater, gay videos. DId I mention that he is gay?
A photo of someone named David Pevsner popped up on my "n*de celebrity" feed.  I never heard of him, but when I checked the IMDB, I found 57 acting credits, with a lot of gay-themed projects.
A promising start.  Until you start checking the synopses.
A bartender in a gay bar in a 2000 episode of NYPD Blue: the detectives, including the homophobic Rick Schroeder, deal with the case of a man who rents a hotel room to meet guys on the downlow.  He is stabbed 47 times, and his p enis removed.  So, like "Cruising", with some gay panic shite?
Tumblr media
A casting agent in The Fluffer (2001): a young man employed as a fluffer (keeping the adult actors interested) falls for "a gay-for-pay p*rn star whose hedonistic lifestyle may lead them both to destruction."  Yuck, more gay-as-sleaze homophobia.  I'll be he gets redeemed through a heterosexual romance.
"Man in Hospital" in Adam & Steve (2005):  Adam and his girlfriend are at a pub, when he sees a male dancer, Steve, and decides to hook up.  Years later, he meets Steve again, now a psychiatrist, and they start a new relationship.  Meanwhile, the ex-girlfriend starts dating Steve's roommate.  It's on Pluto only, so I can't get to it, but according to the reviews, there's some homophobic hate crime, people being horrified at seeing a gay couple (in 2005 New York), stereotyping, gross-out humor, and a whimpering dog.
A lot of gay roles, but not positive ones.  I don't know if this guy is gay or a blistering homophobe, or both.
A starring role in The Real Life (2007), about a life coach (David) who gets his own reality tv show, and becomes "addicted to fame."  Not available to stream anywhere.
Tumblr media
Lez Be Friends (2007), two episodes of a tv pilot repackaged as a movie: A lesbian must pretend to be straight so her lesbian-phobic landlord will allow her and her gay bff to move in with a gay guy.  So the dude is fine with gay men, but not lesbians?  Or does he think that gay people all hook up with each other?.  That's the premise of Three's Company.   The first episode sets up the premise, and the second is about a crab infestation.  David plays Duke, not one of the roommates.  Not available to stream.
A p*rnography professor in P*rnography: A Thriller (2009).
Role Play (2010): A recently outed soap star begins a relationship with a "recently divorced gay marriage activist," and there's something about fame. At least nobody dies. David plays Alex, the resort owner.
The IMDB goes on like that, with minor quasi-homophobic roles in gay-themed movies and tv shows. I'm going to move up to the tv series where David has more substantial roles.
Tumblr media
Tardust in 10 episodes of We're Alive: A Story of Survival, a podcast about a zombie apocalypse.
The Host in 7 episodes of Disorganized Zone, a Twilight zone parody.
27 episodes of Old Dogs & New Tricks (2011-20), a webseries about four middle-aged gay men living in "youth-obsessed West Hollywood": Leon Acord as a talent agent, Curt Bonem as singer who peaked in the 1980s, David as an actor who peaked in the 1990s, and Jeffrey Patrick Olson as a personal trainer
Scrooge in Scrooge & Marley (2012), a gay retake of Dickens' Christmas Carol.  The "bah! humbug!" dude is mourning his dead partner (Tim Kazurinski), learns the Spirit of Christmas, and helps his nephew get a boyfriend.  And the ghosts are rather...um, festive.
It's on Tubi. Maybe I'll review it next Christmas.
David appears to be primarily a theatrical actor, with again a lot of gay themed plays: Party, When Pigs Fly, F*cking Men, as well as standbys like Fiddler on the Roof.  He wrote three songs for N*ked Boys Singing, and has starred in two one-man shows, From Bitter to Better, and Musical Comedy Who re.
He also has a solo album, Most Versatile (2016), and an autobiography, Damn Shame: A Memoir of Desire, Defiance, and Show Tunes (2022).
Tumblr media
When he was a struggling actor in the 1980s, David worked as a hustler, and did some n*de modeling.  Here's one from the 2000s.
David continues to do n*de modeling, disputing the myth that older guys can't be attractive -- or interested in s*ex.  He's interested -- and very busy.
The full profile, with n*de photos, is on RG Beefcake and Boyfriends.
