I think we as humans need to realize how privileged we are to be born into a human body.

Sure, I've seen a lot of people wishing how they could be a cat, dog or wolf just so they could be cute and taken care of and relax all day.

But let's remember that most non-human animals aren't so privileged.

Not only are pets often neglected and abused, but if you had been born into the body of a fish, a pig, a cow, a chicken?

Your life is seen as worthless - a means to an end. Fish are often not even regarded as living sentient beings, just decorations or food.

Pigs get their tails cut off, chickens get their beaks cut, often living in their own shit and piss. Cows get their babies stolen so you can drink their breast milk or eat cheese. And at the end of the day their lives are ended by being gassed, electrocuted, having their throat slit.

Thank your lucky stars for being born into the human body because your life could've been much much worse.

I think that there are many reasons why conditions may have changed enough while the aquarium was closed for the fish to stop eating. Disruptions in routine, different noise levels, light levels, temperature changes in the building affecting the water... Captive animals can be extremely sensitive to these changes, particularly fish.

I can also see how the staff making a concerted effort and visiting the tank to observe whether their intervention worked would reverse some of these changes. If the appearance of the staff in uniform is the visual cue for that fish that it is feeding time, it makes sense that if that no longer happens they may stop eating. The uniforms then reappear, so the fish sees the cue again and eats. It doesn't mean they like the presence of human visitors, it just means that their routine has been re-established. It could also be nothing more than a coincidence, or the result of the staff observations themselves.

But even if we are very generous and assume that the fish did stop eating because of the lack of visitors and started to eat because of the illusion of visitors, isn't that just sort of... sad? If the animals have so little stimulation and social engagement in their own habitat that no longer being gawked at by visitors is enough to make them stop eating? That just tells us that they don't have enough enrichment.

The frustrating thing is we have so much information on the harmful effects of captivity and constant visitors on captive animals that nobody cares about, but as soon as there is a single anecdote that "actually they LOVE it" it goes viral all over social media...

Vegans(a very specific type, not all) when they say "it's more environmentally friendly to not use animal products! Think about how many resources cows take up!" Make me laugh cause like

Babygirl the fish are dying from the microplastics from all the pleather you lot use which is quite literally disintegrating after a certain amount of time and doesn't last anywhere near as long as leather.

Sacrificing a thousand fish to save one cow, and you're probably not even saving that cow, you're just letting more of it go to waste.

Oh but you can't say that to them, they'll just call you a "carnist" or some shit instead of trying to have an actual conversation
