For the record, it’s not “suicide prevention” to guilt trip your loved ones into staying alive because “you’ll follow them if they kill themselves”, or because “you won’t love them anymore if they kill themselves”. Those are just contributing factors to suicide, dressed up as love.

There are a lot of powerful (but kind!!) ways to tell someone you want them to stay. Hundreds of different ways to show someone you love them and want them alive. Guilt-tripping is not on that list. It is just cruelty. You’re weaponising the suicidal person’s love for you against them- and as a result worsening their pain (whether that’s what you intended or not).

Removing suicidal people’s autonomy/sense of choice by guilting them into staying isn’t some amazing life-saving act. Making them fear for your safety if they act impulsively, or follow through on a suicide-plan, isn’t helpful to anyone. But especially not to them!!

There is no situation where guilt-tripping is the best course of action to try and help a suicidal person. It shouldn’t be a course of action ever, in any situation at all, to be honest. Threats and guilt have no place in suicide-prevention. It’s really, really concerning to see them used and encouraged.

Please listen to suicidal people when they tell you this isn’t how you help them. It is quite literally the difference between life and death sometimes.

Notes to read before you say anything in responses to this, because we aren’t in the mood:

-> We write this as the chronically depressed and previously suicidal friend/child/patient/student/sibling/etc. (We are fine currently & not a risk to ourselves, don’t even go there.) We have experienced a lot of different approaches to dealing with our past suicidal ideation/intent/attempts- guilt has never helped. It has not helped anyone we have ever met. We have, however, seen guilt nearly kill people.

-> If you genuinely, genuinely, are at a loss for what to do to help a suicidal loved one? There are a lot of resources out there from actually-suicidal people (or people who have been suicidal in the past) that break down some things you can do. We’re happy to make our own version here if it’s wanted. But please, whatever you do for the suicidal people around you, do it with warmth and compassion. Understand that trying to remove their choices- whether you like the choice they may make or not- does not help them. Guilts and threats do not address the core issues for them.

-> We can and probably will elaborate on this at some point, but right now we need to go rest. We have a lot more to add to this later. This is not all our thoughts on the subject.

-> If you’ve never dealt with suicidal thoughts/intent personally before and you feel compelled to be unpleasant in the replies, please instead spend that energy talking to your depressed and suicidal friends. Don’t waste the energy on us, go tell the people close to you that you love them.

-> Genuine questions about the topic welcome. Genuine questions about what we would put on the list of “helpful things” are also welcome (but please give us time to compile the list). Sharing your thoughts on the topic as a suicidal person/suicide survivor is welcome and encouraged. Added nuance is welcome too!!

-> Anecdotes about how you guilt-tripped your suicidal friend and “now they’re fine” are unwelcome. De-railing is also unwelcome. Cruelty towards suicidal people is unwelcome and will get you blocked.

I love emotional self-harm. It's so cool guys we should do it all the time when something goes wrong in the world. Focusing on the bad thing and nothing else might be pushing me to suicide, but it's helping people! Definitely! Totally! My suicide will feed and aid all those people!

The whole, "K*lling urself is a permanent solution to a temporary problem" bullshit is spouted by the ignorant lucky ones who have only had temporary problems. Some people's problems are permanent so maybe try offering actual help and support to them rather than regurgitating an overused phrase that means nothing to people with real struggles.

house md will always be remebered as the most insane thing ever broadcast because of how unabashedly feral everyone involved was.

a short collection of things that happen on the show, just off the top of my head, not even scratching the surface:

- house shoots a random dead body in the morgue and then sticks him in an mri machine, which pulls the bullet out of the dead guy’s head and destroys the machine, costing the hospital millions

- foreman gets bitten by a person with rabies

- chase kills an african dictator

- cameron steals drugs from a patient after possibly getting hiv from said patient

- house induces a migraine and then takes a drug made by his arch nemesis (who he’s been stalking for 25 years) to get the drug taken off the market. he then takes lsd (in the hospital, in the middle of a case) to cure the migraine.

- chase goes into anaphylaxis after doing body shots

- house stops an elevator so he can perform a cavity (vaginal) search on a teenage heart transplant patient who’s in cardiorespiratory arrest

- they give a neurosurgeon mushrooms to cure his food poisoning, then they stick him in an operating room. the neurosurgeon strips in front of a health board assessor.

- kutner dies for gay marriage

- house sets an autopsy room on fire while trying to juggle flaming bottles

- house gets recruited by the cia

- taub gets held at gun point after diagnosing a stripper with skin cancer

- in almost every single episode, the team breaks into multiple houses

- house fakes terminal brain cancer so he can get drugs implanted directly into the pleasure centre of his brain

- house cons us immigration to get his fake wife a green card. he also uses his fake wife’s ukrainian food truck to spy on people

- house tries to get wilson, his closet case boybestfriend, into bed every few episodes. every other sentence out of house’s mouth is about wanting to rail wilson.

- taub has a kid with his ex-wife, after they divorce, at the same time he has a kid with his 25 yo side piece. the kids’ names are sophie and sophia.

- house and wilson have a bet on who can hide a chicken in the hospital the longest without anyone finding out

- house tries to kill himself like 6 times and always fails (insulin shock, overdoses, electrocution, jumping off a building, cutting, etc)

- house fakes his death to get out of a prison sentence after violating his parole so he can live out his bi love story with his gay best friend who has 5 months to live

Make your Whumpee tired.

Whumpees that have been deprived of sleep by Whumper, so much so that they don't remember how to walk in a straight line and can't figure out whether the recent appearance of little black bugs in their cell are real or a hallucination.

Whumpees that can't get a full night's rest. They doze off, only to be jolted awake by their own anxiety of not knowing when Whumper would come back. Perhaps they are awakened by phlegm-coated coughs induced by their illness. They are awakened by nightmares, or by Caregiver who is worried they may succumb to hypothermia, or by a thunderstorm, or the rough blanket scratching their open wounds, or so on.

Whumpees who pull all nighters to protect their friends or lovers.

Whumpees whose eyes burn when they finally can close their eyes. Whumpees whose muscles twitch, who can't stop yawning no matter how hard they try to stifle it. Whumpees with dark, glassy eyes. Whumpees who are slow to react or have a hard time keeping up with the conversation. Whumpees with throbbing headaches. Whumpees with brain fog and memory loss.

Whumpees who have been on the run and have over exhausted their bodies. Their muscles and joints continue to scream long after its over. Whumpees with extensive blood loss. Whumpees who are malnourished.

Whumpees whose survivor's guilt keeps them awake, wondering what they might have done differently, whether it was all their fault, or why they were the ones to live.

Whumpees whose bodies are in chronic pain or illness and who have to hide it, causing muscle and mental fatigue. They keep going with a smile until they collapse or pass out.

Whumpees who break down in tears, begging to be left alone so they can rest. Whumpees who sob when they are told that the bed in front of them is theirs to use whenever they want.
