me and my mate eli invented a cheesy high school sports movie au on twitter where kipperilly multiclasses into barbarian in freshman year and gets an outlet for her rage and then joins the bloodrush team with mary ann and has an epic sports rivalry with fabian and gorgug.

this is from when their bickering escalates into an actual fistfight on the field and they lose a Big Game and gorthalax forces them to do chores to Bond. and then later a monster attacks them to make sure they bond

i've noticed that some frankenstein adaptions that include walton (the only good ones ☝️🤓) choose to depict him as a naval officer (aesthetically, at the very least — one of my favourite examples is in the 2018 manchester royal exchange theatre production because well. LOOK AT HIM)

this phenomena is so interesting to me because he is explicitly Not that, textually

on one hand i get it because the correlation between polar exploration and the navy especially during the 18th and 19th centuries is there and makes sense; it’s an easy connection to make if you just want walton “on screen” and a visual short hand for the reason behind the type of journey he’s making (i.e. discovery service expedition to the arctic sent by the admiralty) without any real exploration of his character and the inner thoughts that he communicates to margaret (and ultimately the reader) through his letters

but walton himself makes the claim very early in his narrative that his voyage is entirely independent, and that he basically funded the entire thing himself (with a little help from his cousin, whoever they are/were). most importantly, because he was prohibited from going to sea as a boy by his father, he served on whaling ships for years to train himself mentally and physically:

Six years have passed since I resolved on my present undertaking. I can, even now, remember the hour from which I dedicated myself to this great enterprise. I commenced by inuring my body to hardship. I accompanied the whale-fishers on several expeditions to the North Sea; I voluntarily endured cold, famine, thirst, and want of sleep; I often worked harder than the common sailors during the day and devoted my nights to the study of mathematics, the theory of medicine, and those branches of physical science from which a naval adventurer might derive the greatest practical advantage. Twice I actually hired myself as an under-mate in a Greenland whaler, and acquitted myself to admiration. I must own I felt a little proud when my captain offered me the second dignity in the vessel and entreated me to remain with the greatest earnestness, so valuable did he consider my services.

his voyage is motivated not by any sort of command from above by lifelong ambition and self-interest. he considers what he can contribute to science and maritime navigation, which, granted, serves his country as much as it serves him; but to me it is primarily his passion for the sublime beauty that the arctic represents, even if the reality is much more dangerous than he could have predicted, that drives him forward. he needs to see it for himself, to know that he can do it, no matter the cost (sound like someone else we know?)

if i had to draw a comparison between walton and any real-life polar explorer from around the time frankenstein was written it would be william scoresby, an english scientist who began his own career on whaling ships (ironically he thought the open polar sea theory that walton espouses was complete bs — and he was right, lmao)

janice cavell’s article ‘The Sea of Ice and the Icy Sea: The Arctic Frame of Frankenstein’ has a lot more to say on this topic and i’d highly recommend it but i just have to include this extract here because i was so delighted to learn about some of the real people who likely inspired walton in shelley’s mind:

Here, then, was material for both the Creature's journey and Walton's doomed mission. Moreover, here Mary found a surname for her Arctic captain in the list of officers who served under Vitus Bering in 1733-41: Peter Lassenius, William Walton, Dmitri Laptiew, Jego Jendauro, Dmitri Owzin, Swen Waxel, Wasili Prontischischtschew, Michailo Plautin, and Alexander Scheltinga. Walton, the sole Englishman on this list of exotically named foreigners, was in command of the Hope (Müller, 1761:15, 26; on William Walton, see Cross, 2007:177-178). The ship's name reflects the most prominent characteristic of the fictional Walton, whose first name, Robert, may have been taken from Robert Thorne, the 16th-century originator of the open polar sea theory. Even though Walton's theories about the Arctic are opposed to Scoresby's, Mary may have intended to acknowledge Scoresby's status as both a whaler and a man of science when she had Walton train himself for his chosen career through whaling voyages.

like! the Real Walton’s ship being named the Hope and “the ship’s name reflects the most prominent characteristic of the fictional Walton” ohhhh i am NOT going to cry don’t LOOK at me

anyway this post doesn’t really have much of a point. i guess tl;dr i just think it’s more interesting that walton is canonically just some overly ambitious guy with big dreams and more money than he knows what to do with who is willing to hang out on gross whaling ships for half a decade rather than pursue the more respectable maritime profession because he wants what he wants on his own terms and no one else’s

once this whole mess is over (and like OVER over, no new twists or anything like that) i wanna see everyone come back to the agency and everything’s back to normal.

but it’s not normal if that makes sense.

atsushi might not be dead but he’s still seen all of that and was ready to die if it meant he could be with everyone and just never could relax. whenever he thought things were going to be okay it all just gets ripped away. he cannot let himself relax and finally settle in.

dazai didn’t die in meursault but it was so tough on him anyways, he injured himself so much which is something he HATES, as well as having to plan against fyodor over and over and over and OVER. is he still going to be on edge even if they’ve dealt with him?

like maybe the agency has been put back together but there is NO denying the effect everything from tragic sunday onwards has left a horrible mark on everyone at the agency.

from yosano having to confront her past with mori to ranpo having to go against someone he thought he could trust so well. so much has happened (in so little time) and it’s been awful, literally no one in the agency is the same after this. i really hope asagiri explores that <3

no but really it's funny sam thinks dean is john 2.0 when s1 dean is just. content to take on random cases and help save some people and is trying to do some good w/ the hand he's been dealt and isn't all that interested in his father's revenge quest and up until then has always had to play the mediator and swallow down his own feelings and anger. while sam's the one who quickly becomes obsessed w/ revenge the minute he loses jess and finding the thing that killed her and is quick to anger. "you're more like him than i'll ever be" "i'll take that as a compliment" "you can take that however you like" etc etc

Ian did hear via rumors that there was a risk of gum-choking if he went to the sex ed class, so he’d elected not to chew any when he came in.  It turned out to be a good call, because he sort of felt like a completely different person as he walked out.

His notebook, which was actually his tattered lyric notebook that he’d lent pages for, now had a series of chaotic notes he’d scribbled in.  He’d have to remind himself to tear those pages out before he let Theo look at his book again--well, maybe he needed to see them, since his bandmate missed out on so much vocabulary.  His arm had a large drawn-on image of a blade complete with fire and sparkles, and comparing it with Aya’s very good arm-blade had been a good way to decompress a bit after a chaotic end to the class that left him actually…somewhat sick to his stomach with nerves.  He was glad Daniel wasn’t actually upset with him at the end of all that but.  Ouch, eesh.

He spotted Mari outside in the hall when he left, actively psyching himself up as he approached.  He had to remind himself that she’d shown interest in him during class…but what if he’d been reading those things wrong?  Agh, what if when she touched his hand it was only a coincidence that Ali had said that was a crush sign at the same time?  Ian was about to turn in the other direction, but stopped himself.  Enough was enough.  He knew he had a crush on her, his friends on the ship knew, she probably knew.  “Hey…what do you think about leaving to go grab some food?  There’s the milkshake stand nearby and I think it also sells french fries, or there’s this place I went to last time that sells something kind of like an empanada--which is like a fried dough pocket--except they fill it with peanut butter and marshmallow…or we could do something food related that are not those things…and maybe we could walk to the park…are you interested?”

Julius: "When did she say that, exactly?"

His voice was eerily calm, but there was an undercurrent of barely-suppressed anger in it. Imogen, who suddenly realized what she had come close to divulging, tried to brush it off.

Imogen: "A long time ago; I don't remember."

Julius: "I think you do. Imogen, when did you last see her?"

Imogen: "When I went to ask her to help us find Fiona - but you already knew that!"

Julius nodded quietly to himself, as though mulling something over.

Julius: "And your relationship just happened to come up in that conversation?"

Imogen was panicking now; she didn't even notice Mary and Vernoraxia standing awkwardly in the doorway, alerted by the unfolding argument.

Shit shit shit! Think, Imogen, think!

Imogen: "Look, I -"

She glanced at her husband. His deeply hurt expression made the flimsy explanation she'd been preparing feel like an additional betrayal. The words died on her lips.

Julius: "Were you having an affair?"

Fuck!

Imogen: "No! I mean...yes, we did sleep together once...but only that one time, I swear!"

Julius: "When?"

Imogen: "I don't know, 17, 18 years ago? Before Rowan was born!"

Vernoraxia remembered. She had pushed the memory to the back of her mind, almost forgetting it ever happened, but hearing Imogen confess brought it all back. She didn't want to be there for what came next, and suspected the Merridews didn't either.

Vernoraxia: "C'mon, Mary - let's go."

Mary didn't need to be told twice.

Now that the Grand Fest has officially come to an end and the winners announced, I would like to give a few words.

To Team Past: Congratulations big time for your win! You put in the good fight and prevailed despite, quite frankly, overwhelming odds (and out of our two opponents, you were the ones I would've wanted to win, if it wasn't us)! Well well done! 👏👏👏

And to my fellow folks on Team Future: Well done! We faced the same overwhelming odds as Team Past, combined with Past's odds stacked against us, and although we came in a very, very dead last, by Joe we didn't go down without a fight, and the effort alone, the drive to never give up, deserves praise enough. That just makes us underdogs, just like the dear idols that represented us! And unlike the Past or the Present, there is no way of escaping the Future, it'll come whether you like it or not! Be it tomorrow, next week, or next year, we will, eventually, prevail! Because we're the Future, and the Future is the marching passage of Time! Well done, guys! Well done indeed! 👏👏👏
