Ok so
Tumblr media
John isn’t really being literal here but I have noticed, especially in recent episodes, that Arthur’s voice has shifted a bit.
I have “thanks yorick” and “owls don’t eat people boys” ricocheting in my head, where it sounds like he’s speaking more from his chest than ever.
Whether this is just the way his voice has changed (a thing that happens a lot in voice acting) or it’s intentional I can’t be sure but.
I like to think is shows him being more honest with himself and others I guess. I think about part 45 and how Arthur knows that he doesn’t deserve to die for what he’s done, and he struggles to admit that to himself because the whole “I would want him dead” monologue.
His voice early on always struck me as something akin to a customer service voice, very gentle and polite, tho it quickly slips as the events of the series completely disintegrate his psych. It was a facade, to a point.
Idk it was just something I noticed and liked

Who’s the fire lit for?
In Part 45 we are introduced to Malam, a mysterious character who seems to enact justice for children who die unjustly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He approaches Arthur, and seems surprised when he discovers that he is the one who lit the fire, as he expected a child to have done so.
I don’t think Malam’s expectations are completely unfounded, as it is not really present Arthur who lit the fire... but the child that went to the Boys' Brigade who did:
Tumblr media
I think that Arthur unknowingly lit the fire both for Faroe and himself (or more correctly, his past child self). Malam was not called in by the fire to bring justice to just Faroe, but also to Arthur.
Tumblr media
Arthur had been forced to metaphorically kill his child-self and his innocence and forced to grow up too quickly for his own good. His childhood had been cut short so suddenly and brutally by his parent’s death, a grief too big and complicated for a young child to understand and work through.
Even now, on the inside, Arthur is still that wounded and timid child. He is still carrying that pain with him. However, the hostility he had to live throughout his life only granted him more wounds and bruises. The soft, childlike and gentle parts of himself were hardened under layers and layers of scar tissue. Arthur had to learn pretty quickly that it was never safe enough for him to be kind and patient with himself. He was never given the time to process his traumas. No one taught him or showed him the love and care he so desperately needed and cried for so long for.
The hurt was drowned by more hurt and it was never tended to, never really cared for. But it never really disappeared or healed. It always stayed deep within him.
But now (finally), for the first time, Arthur’s most devastating traumas (the loss of his daughter, and the loss of his own innocence) have been recognised.
His childhood cry has been finally answered.
The kid Arthur was can finally rest now that Malam stopped by his fire.

"Arthur. Whatever happens. I’ll never forget you."
John kept his promise. Despite spending immeasurable time back in the Dark World, compared to the few months he had with Arthur. That short time was enough to fundamentally change John so much he couldn’t fit back with the other part of his soul. When he came back he remembered Arthur and Faroe and everything they had went through.
In season 4 when he started to have memory problems, Arthur always brought him back. Even when he forgot Noel and then himself as he got overwhelmed by Yellow, he always knew who Arthur was.
And in Part 45, he recalled Arthur's time in the Boys' Brigade, a small bit of trivia that Arthur told him before the Dark World, before even the prison pits. It was something Arthur had forgotten telling John himself, but John remembered.

that man totally meant that alexander is not what he seemed and when everything goes to shit, yorick's gonna be like "i knew this was going to happen!" and probably john's gonna yell at him for not telling them and yorick's gonna say something like "i was in the FUCKING bag the whole time what was i supposed to do" and then everything explodes probably

So I’ve seen a few people theorising that Malam is future Arthur or John or some kind of mash of them in one person. The similar scars, inflection, knowledge of Faroe “OUR day of wrath”
But I have one to add. The fact he knew what a palindrome was when that word won’t exist for another 400 YEARS!!
