I’ve been seeing a couple posts going around talking about how, in the latest episode, Arthur states he “doesn’t believe in anything after death” and how that doesn’t really make sense seeing as he’s been to the waylay. As an atheist, I’d like to put my two cents in if that’s alright!
Firstly, I’d like to talk about how important being an atheist is to Arthur’s character. After thinking about his past for just a bit, it becomes obvious that any sort of religious ideals Arthur vaguely followed was just to fit in (ie. marrying Bella). People like Daniel shoved religious values into to Arthur’s face for the longest time, and he clearly became resentful towards religion because of that.
Tumblr media
Arthur’s lack in a religion, or even a belief in an afterlife, doesn’t necessarily come from a place of lack of proof. It comes from his own stance against a higher being. This is something I find quite relatable myself, as even if there was a form of irrefutable proof in a god, it wouldn’t change that I’m an atheist.
On the other side of things, even if Arthur needed to stop being an atheist after having irrefutable evidence, the waylay isn’t that evidence. He couldn’t remember it upon initial return, and when he eventually did, it’s not like the waylay couldn’t have been a temporary place after death or a circumstantial thing for Arthur himself. We as the audience may know that it’s not those things for the sake of plot, but Arthur wouldn’t.
As a sort of follow up, Arthur having proof that Faroe didn’t fully disappear also does not mean that he has to believe in an afterlife. Just because Faroe became a flame, does that mean everyone has somewhere to go after they die? To Arthur, probably not!
Tumblr media
Again, while I think it can be argued that all of this can be evidence for Arthur to personally believe in the existence of an afterlife, I don’t think that’s the important thing here. Arthur’s atheism is a fundamental part of his character. For him to turn around, after repeatability finding his own meaning in his life by it lacking any meaning at all, and say “well hey there might be an afterlife there was that one time” would just be completely ill-fitting narratively. It’s the solidarity between Antoine and Arthur in this moment by not believing in an afterlife that makes the scene function.
I hope these points don’t come off as aggressive or patronizing, I simply want to put in my perspective as someone who finds Arthur’s form of atheism especially relatable and realistic ✨❤️

Orpheus and Eurydice, jarthur variant BUT
Arthur is Orpheus. He can see again. John has his own body. It's weak and fragile, and John has no experience operating it. He stumbles and curses and whines that it's too cold, but there is no malice in his voice. He is happy - worried and frustrated, but still happy. More than anything, Arthur wants to turn around and help John, tentatively hold him, so they can get out of the cave together. He wants even more to look at his friend.
But the cave is long and twisted, and the longer they go the more tired John becomes. He used to narrate everything, despite Arthur being able to see again, but he has been quiet for awhile. So, instead, Arthur starts talking - he tells John about the first thing they will do when they get out of the cave. What food he will order John. How great it is to sleep in sometimes. How to correctly make tea. How he hopes they can go to the Christmas fair.
John stays silent. The hand - the one that used to belong to John and the one Arthur now holds onto John's new hand - is warm and sticky and Arthur hears the quiet dripping of something onto the rock floor.
Arthur talks about everything he can think of, because if he stops - he will turn around.
OR
John is Orpheus. He has his own body but Arthur still can't see. "It's okay" - Arthur says, his voice trembling with happy tears. - "You just have to guide me again". Arthur is injured and tired, but he keeps going right behind John, holding his hand with his right one. But the cave is long and twisted and Arthur grows more tired. It frustrates John: finally, he has his own body and yet he is still useless, he can't help Arthur in a way that matters.
He just needs to get to the exit. He just needs to get to the exit of the cave and Arthur will be fine. It would be so much easier if Arthur could still talk to him. He talked a little, during the first hours of the journey, but the closer they are to the exit the weaker his voice sounds, the less Arthur says. He didn't say anything for a while - and John wants so much to turn around and check if he's okay.
Instead, he continues to narrate everything he sees. He describes the twisted turns of the cave, the bats that fly around, and the beautiful gems he sees on their way.
John talks about everything he can think of, because if he stops - he will turn around.

what would happen if Richard got thrown into the OG verse (John and arthur instead of faroeverse)
He's going to kidnap them and send them to The King on a silver platter, I fear.
Although, Richard will have the upper hand the first time and able to manipulate, mansplain, manwhore manslaughter his way to do it, ofc Arthur and John would find someway to fight him.
If I had a hand on how he died, it will be throwing him onto the train tracks. (He's durable)
I do wanna add that if he met Wallace Larson:
1) he's definitely calling him Wally
2) he's going to offer Yellow a direct trip to The Dreamlands (and be a more devoted follower and host)
3) he's going to carve Larson and use his viscera to paint The Order of the Fallen Star's floors. (He's offended that Larson wants to be a god or manipulate a god instead of yknow, freeing said god and worshipping him).
