I really like how John is just. Actually really good at remembering stuff. Given how many plot points revolve around him having memory issues (s1, s4, etc) it's just a little bit funny

I also love how much he seems to like flexing that skill, how proud he gets of himself for remembering little details from early in the series

all the shit happens to ukraine in february. in ukrainian this month is called лютий, meaning fierce, cruel, severe

sometimes i think about how i’ve effectively dug myself a grave with this blog. half my internet presence is about being queer and ukrainian, famously two things russia hates the most.

if trump proceeds with the “peaceful negotiations” that happen without ukraine even present, if he pushes to implement another leader in ukraine (meaning, of course, a pro-russian puppet) and makes my country a quote unquote neutral territory, it obviously means occupation. when there are bombs over my head, i’m at least an abstract target, i can rely on luck not to get hit. if russians come to power tho? i’m toast.

i wish i was exaggerating, but this is already happening to people in occupied parts of the country. those who had social media posts in ukrainian, about queer rights, etc. are being seeked out and threatened. my acquaintance was once on call with her friend on crimea, who had weird noises in the background. when questioned, she casually said that they were coming from russian police beating her neighbour for listening to ukrainian music.

i constantly hear from people who miraculously left the occupied territories how they had to delete everything from their phones, because russian soldiers would do random phone searches — both just on the street or when a person tries to leave the occupied city. it’s not uncommon that people get shot over it.

everything about “peaceful negotiations” and “compromises”, trading “land for a peace agreement” promises me a death sentence

Today marks 11 years since russia started war in Ukraine. 11 years ago russian troops without identifiable insignia invaded the Crimea peninsula.

Never going to be normal about Arthur IMMEDIATLY knowing that John is hiding something from him when they reunite in s3 and yet not trying to confront him

Just....we, as an audience, know for sure that John is hiding something. We know that John has a deal with Kayne and we know that John has to bring Arthur to New York for something. Arthur doesn't know that, as far as he is concerned his music really did bring John back. He has some context clues that John is not telling everything and he even manages to catch John's slip-up AND YET

He says "okay". He says "fine". He knows that John is lying and he let him. Does he trust John that much? Is he waiting for John to admit what he is lying about?

When John asks Arthur to trust him and go to New York to look for Orden of a Fallen Star, Arthur listens. And in New York he continues to listen to John. He trusts John that whatever he is keeping from Arthur is not going to kick them in the ass down the line. Even when John's memory begins to fade, even when he almost kills Oscar, even when he tries to make Arthur do something, by poorly disguising it as his deductions (about the Orden of the Fallen Star praying to some object).

And it just makes the s4 finale and Intermezzo so much more painful. Because John has no choice but to lie, because if Arthur knew about his deal with Kayne, he never would have come to the Orden of the Fallen Star. And maybe John's horrible lies are a scream for help, a hint to Arthur, that there is something more to it, that he should be careful. Maybe he wants for Arthur to caught him in a lie and confront him, BUT ARTHUR NEVER DOES BECAUSE HE TRUSTS JOHN

It was a while since we heard "You call it madness, but I call it love" but it's still such a prominent theme in malevolent. This is madness - what Arthur is enduring for John, he shouldn't do it, he shouldn't trust John at all.

And yet he does

-And yet you love him -I suppose so.
