Taiga was pretty meh to me when I watched it, but following your liveblogs has made me realize that I didn't fully appreciate it the first time around. There's a lot of good stuff here, especially in conjunction with the v-dramas.

yeah i get the sense most people let taiga sorta pass them by, and i'd guess for a lot of people it was an issue of marketing. all the pre-show hype was about taiga being the son of taro and there's a team of ultras this time! but the show's not really about any of that at its core. it touches on it from time to time (like this excellent arc with taiga's corruption), but the show overall is much more interested in exploring smaller, personal stories about humanity's relationship to aliens and how they can relate to and learn from one another. it's something that's been a staple of ultra for a long time but taiga is the series where it's felt the most fully realized to me. but thoughtful introspections on topics like immigration and prejudice aren't Marketable™ so you get the tri-squad and legacy stuff thrown into the mix

that's not to say those elements are completely superfluous, the tri-squad being comprised of three ultras each from a different "section" of the franchise reinforces the series' main theme of connecting with people that are different from you and they're certainly fun to have around, they're just not the focal point. taiga's a very classic series in that sense, a nice blend of new gen's aesthetics and advancements to the formula while going back to that episodic style of show where each episode is designed to tell a mostly self-contained story that'll get you thinking about something. that's why i don't mind all the backstory stuff being relegated to the voice dramas bc it frees the show up to being able to do what it's really good at while the VAs are there for all that juicy, juicy lore. it's a best of both worlds situation for me

anyways, im rambling, but yeah! im hoping taiga will be reevaluated with time (and hopefully a good mill creek release to get eyes on it again) bc if you can get on board with what it's actually doing rather than what it was initially pitched as, i think it's some of the best ultra out there

you're correct, it's a project sekai fic which like pardon me but I will absolutely explain this to you it's living in my brain 24/7 project sekai is a rhythm featuring hatsune miku and few other vocaloids (MEIKO, KAITO, kagamine len and rin, luka and I think that's it) but basically there are four musical groups in the game not counting the virtual singers and they're

vivid bad squad- I started out with them 10/10 good stuff they're like high school kids who also preform on the street and like at gigs and stuff and they all want to throw a musical event to outdo this really big one that one of the member's father threw

leo/need- they're very wholesome. middle school friends who stopped being friends bc of unfortunate circumstance and the nthey come back together in high school to form a band together and have emotional baggage. very sweet. love them <333

more more jump- going to be honest don't know a lot about them, they're an idol group and I know their leader, minori, like didn't start out an idol and is trying really hard to be good at it and I know haruka like was an idol but was unhappy w it or something, idk much about shizuki or airi though

wonderland x showtimes- okay so I don't know much about them from the actual game but they're VERY popular in the fanbase bc the fandom really saw the four male character in the game not counting len and KAITO and completely latched onto them and ignored most of the other groups w/out men in them (other group w boys is vbs, which is also v popular in the fandom) anyway, they're like a musical theatre troupe and they do shows and stuff, pretty cool. nene and emu are the girls in the group and they're both slightly unhinged. absolute queens.

okay so actually I did have an idea come to me about an ena fic, I also really like ena so I do really want to do something ena focused and hanahaki fics are really popular in the sekai fandom from what I've read but I've not seen many where ena gets it, plus a few common things about hanahaki fics rub me the wrong bc I'm aro, and if you want it done right you gotta do it yourself. also I don't write romance a lot so writing it is always interesting.

let’s talk about food in your wip. are there any special recipes or traditional meals? do any of [the characters] cook or bake?

I think unintentionally I kind of made food the way a lot of the characters show affection for one another or try to express how they're feeling about one another, and kind of a way to show how close they are/how much they trust each other. no traditional dishes but a lot of meals made in the place of telling people you're sorry, or you're there for them, or you love them. gift giving, the love language of the emotionally constipated <3

The Republic hasn't had a standing army in over two thousand years. Even before the Reformation, there was no war on a grand enough scale to justify the expense. It feels like a bad joke, when the Chancellor decrees it, when the Senate allows it. The Jedi aren't a military. The Jedi have never been a military.

They give Obi-Wan a battalion. They give him a battlecruiser, a Marshall Commander, they knight his padawan. He looks over all the clerical minutiae a military runs on and wishes they'd given him a secretary.

"You are trained in the logistics, yes?" He asks, slanting a look to the man standing beside him, white armour disconcertingly unmarked. "Because I'm afraid I am not."

"Sir?" His Commander asks.

This is their first meeting – first official meeting, anyway, Obi-Wan's decently sure their paths crossed on Geonosis. The 212th have yet to be deployed, the whole war still more of an idea than an actuality as both sides wait for the other to blink first. Obi-Wan has no real reason to be here, on the bridge of his battlecruiser, aside from a bone-deep certainty he is in far over his head and he needs to catch up fast.

"I fought a war, once," Obi-Wan says. "Not on this scale, of course, but also not nearly as formally. Guerrilla warfare has far less flimsiwork."

"Right," his Commander says. The vocoder on his helmet strips a lot of the nuance out his voice. "Yes, sir, the Command class training is comprehensive."

"Hardly any need to stand on formality, Commander."

"Sir?"

"Obi-Wan, please. Or Kenobi, if you must." Obi-Wan smiles, reassuring, absolutely no idea what the troopers were told about the Jedi. "And I'd much prefer your name, if you're comfortable giving it."

"Uh," his Commander says. "Cody, sir."

Obi-Wan nods. "A pleasure to meet you, Cody, though of course I'd prefer it were under different circumstances. Tell me, how were the battalions organised? Did you train together, on Kamino?"

"A battalion's a lot of v– men to all train at once," Commander Cody says. Obi-Wan lets the slip pass unremarked. "We trained in squads, then platoons. Geonosis was the first time any of us fought as a large scale unit."

A squad, Obi-Wan now knows, is nine troopers. A platoon is four squads; thirty-six troopers. A company is four platoons, one hundred and forty four troopers, and a battalion is four companies, and beyond that the numbers get far too big for comfort. There's a reason the Jedi aren't a military force – Obi-Wan couldn't name every Knight in the Order, but he could name his every agemate. Every Initiate currently in his once-clan. Every Initiate within six months of ageing out. Every Master currently without a padawan.

He will not, he knows, be able to hold in his head the name of every trooper in his battalion, and it will still be him who orders them to their deaths.

"But the troopers who did train together," he says. "They're all still together now, yes?"

A sense, faint but there, of Commander Cody frowning inside his helmet. "I– I don't know, sir."

"Well," Obi-Wan moves to a terminal, and pulls up the duty roster of the 212th. "Let's check, then."

After a moment's hesitation, Commander Cody joins him, and together they ensure all the troopers are, at least, in squads with troopers they know. It takes several hours, but by the end, Obi-Wan thinks Cody might, someday, actually trust him.

I’m trying my hardest to avoid all non-trailer Pokemon spoilers so I’ll be mostly swerving this place--aside from replies & other lil’ stuff--until I can get a good grip on the game. Team Violet, btw!!)

(Before every new release since Gen V, the whole squad and I get together to hold a sendoff tournament for the latest version, and this time is no exception. As I buy bulk vitamins from the Dojo’s magic vending machine, soft-reset Dynamax dens to get at those pesky hidden abilities, and farm Blissey for that sweet, sweet Exp Candy XL one last time, I can’t help but feel overwhelmingly fond of SwSh. Were the graphics A1? No, and they will never be as long as TPC pumps out a yearly game. Were all the Pokemon present, and did they remove that stupid Battle Timer [and the fact that Dynamaxing takes like five minutes out of the allotted 20?] Also no. But for a person like me who mainly still sticks with Pokemon for the love of the battling system/mechanics, SwSh was a battler’s dream. At least for me! 

Now, I’m still not the biggest fan of Dynamax--we will not be using it this weekend to conserve that precious timer--but Gen VIII made battling so accessible and much less grindy, and I was able to get a lot of people hooked in my circles. I hope (esp. after stomaching BDSP’s weird reversions) that ScVi will continue to make battling easier to get into for everyone. Haven’t dared to look at any leaks--and don’t send me any--but I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.

So, once I saw a post that was summarised ‘Bolin is a popular character and there isn’t a ‘need’ to create fan content for him like Mako’ and let’s explore that because I keep thinking about Mako V Bolin in terms of fan content (mostly fic but general posts on tumblr as well).

One thing I’ve noted is that Mako is (generally) a less popular in the fandom, there’s a sizeable minority who dislikes him, but I’d say most people are just indifferent (positive and negative) and are more interested in exploring Korrasami, which is fine, Korra’s the main character and Korrasami is the most popular ship. However there is a sizeable Mako defence squad and niche content is published and is pretty popular.

Bolin is generally more popular in the fandom but there is no niche Bolin content. You either have him as a side character or on equal footing in Bolin and Mako gen stories, or he’s a side character in KA stories. Positive, but still indifference, but Bolin centric content is hard to find. Most people like Bopal but it sort of has its arc in the series, so there’s not much interest in Bopal centric content like Korrasami. KA has the benefit (in fandom circles) of being relatively unexplored and open to a lot of interpretation so writers can have fun. So creators can make their own stories and explore the relationship how they want in canon-verse continuation, canon universe AUs, complete AUs.

This is partly because o shipping for Bolin V Mako. Mako has a popular niche ship of Wuko, and the new ship Makroh. There’s a lot of ways you can explore Mako’s character with these ships. Bopal is seen is a safe and complete story. It’s cute. To an extent, people don’t see much more to explore— which is something that has even stumped even me with Bopal and I love the ship. Can I write a story for them? I have seen alternative Bolin ships. Wei/Bolin exists, it is a tiny ship. I have seen someone write a tlok fic on ao3 that’s Bolin/Korra centric rewrite of TLOK (it’s pretty much the only ongoing Borra fic). Sometimes Bolin/Eska pops up. Bolin/IrohII was popular in book 1 days. But that’s it. Bopal is a side pairing in Korrasami fics, it doesn’t truly exist as a ship in the fandom in its own right like Wuko or Makroh.

Bolin is well liked, but unexplored as a character. And I think that’s partly because people like Bolin but don’t find him interesting. Which is fine but it’s a shame because I do. There’s likely a lot of pain and trauma that Bolin either doesn’t talk about or doesn’t realise is pain he needs to talk about. There’s really interesting relationship Mako has with Bolin. Bopal could have a lot of conflict. WHEN WILL BOLIN REALISE HIS DESTINY IS TO BE AN ADVOCATE FOR STREET KIDS??

I feel pretty confident saying that in terms of actual fandom, actual content or analysis or whatever, Mako is more popular. There is no Bolin fan community like Mako.

a lot of people have shown interest in the The Venture Bros. since i’ve started posting about it and because the series is funny and engaging as all hell i want them to get the best possible experience. this will include the background/what it is about, content warnings, the episode order to follow, and where you can watch it. this can also be a guide just for anyone curious.

💀 1) What is The Venture Bros.?

Created by Christopher "Jackson Publick" McCulloch and Doc Hammer, The Venture Bros. is an adult animated sitcom that has been broadcast on Adult Swim since 2004 and is currently their longest-running original series to date. What initially started as a largely Jonny Quest/Space Age boy adventurer-inspired satire eventually grew into something entirely new and unique.

The show largely follows the Venture family: twins Dean and Hank, their pathetic daddy-issue riddled super-scientist father Dr. Thaddeus "Rusty" Venture, their brutal but protective bodyguard/secret agent Brock Samson, and the involvement of this family with their supervillain arch-nemesis The Monarch and his squad of butterfly-themed goons. My succinct description here really doesn't do the show justice though.

It's a situational, action, adventure, sci-fi comedy that largely rags on how incompetent, pathetic, or unfortunate many of the characters and situations are in this show. This show is heavy in pop-culture references, largely Gen X ones (70s/80s/90s music and TV/movies). It’s scored by JG Thirwell of the 80s one-man post-punk/industrial band Foetus; seeing how deep their music references in the show can get, it's no wonder the creators chose him. The Venture Bros. is in 4:3 aspect ratio for Seasons 1-2, and turns to 16:9 from Season 3 onwards.

💀 2) Content Warnings

The show itself is great but it can't go without saying that as an Adult Swim show from 2004 there are some things to be aware of before jumping in. It has questionable, outdated humor in earlier seasons but it gets much better later on (observe......), so try to pull through! This list probably isn’t complete and there’s almost definitely stuff I forgot, but it’s a start so you can know what to expect. Most of these (with exception to the frequent ones) are gone or at least far less frequent after seasons 2 or 3.
