“Okay,” Ian wasn’t sure what Mari wanted to talk about. Maybe it was similar to what he wanted to talk about? Because usually, if Mari wanted to talk about something, she did, and that it made it really easy to have conversations. So if she was saving a thought, then it maybe weighed heavier on her than a usual thought did. Ian pondered this while she grabbed their food and returned, holding the shake out to him. He didn’t know what she wanted him to do with it at first. Grab it? Drink it? Ian leaned forward to start doing the second thing, then remembered he had straws in his hand. Straws! He peeled off the paper bits and stuck both straws into the cup. Ian headed over to toss the wrappers into the trash, and remembered to steal extra salt packets on his way back to Mari, shoving them into his pockets. “Is this something you want to talk about right, right now, before I say stuff? Or do we kinda want to say stuff at the same time--but we both make sure to say the thing we want to say, of course.” Ian had seen enough movies with the ‘what is it you wanted to tell me’ ‘nothing’ trope to know they wanted to avoid it. He started walking in the direction of the park, while holding out his hands in offering to hold something Mari was currently holding.

Ian seemed happy to get something familiar and Mari was excited to try something new, so a chocolate shake was perfect! With fries so that there was something salty, and sharing both because it would be easier to walk around in the park that way. And because it was a fun, romantic-sounding thing to do, and Ian didn't seem to think it was weird or bad that she wanted to do something together that they thought was romantic. He really liked the plan, even, which made her smile and think about the note they'd been passing in class. Was what Ian wanted to talk about the same thing she wanted to talk about...? It seemed pretty likely, but she would just have to make sure to talk about it either way. The thought of saying all of that so soon but not being able to say it yet made her kind of nervous, so the distraction of placing an order was welcome. She got some napkins from the dispenser and tucked them into her bag, glad for something to do, and then found herself getting kind of nervous again during the waiting. Now wasn't the right time to talk about Big Important Things, but it almost was. "So, um! I have something I wanted to talk about too, when we do talk about stuff. Maybe the same thing? Or it could be different. It depends on what the thing you wanted to talk about was!" She looked back to the stand when their order was suddenly called out - sure enough, there it was. "Oh! Um, hold that thought, I guess!" She picked up the shake and held it out to Ian so he could put the straws in.
