when i was little i couldnt grasp/fathom what an autistic person experienced the world like. (read: i was autistic and couldnt put myself in somebody elses shoes). i also had really shitty adults who'd shrug off my question about it with "oh, well, you know. it's in the same grouping as down syndrome and what not!" (its really not but they meant that they both may require special needs) and this did nothing to paint a picture on what it meant to be autistic.

obviously the neurotypical adults around me likely couldn't explain it back then (nor could they accurately do so now) but it feels kinda...vindicating to know/be autistic. to look at that moment in my childhood and go "hah! you silly child! look in the mirror! you ARE autistic!". but also to know that every time they used 'autistic' as an insult...they werent correct?

at least, for me and a lot of my peers, our autistic traits can mirror and mimic so many disorders that neurotypical people experience such as anxiety, depression, and even ADHD (though thats not NT but u get my point!!). whenever they used autism as an insult, they usually meant dumb. stupid. slow. all of the above. "what are you, autistic?" is almost never used in the context of speaking to a person having a panic attack, yet thats how a lot of peoples autism presents itself. and i dont know why... but theres something beyond vindicating about knowing this when my educators and guardians failed to understand it. it's like harboring a little secret that the world just doesn't grasp.

no but really, I think it fits him really well! I had thought his UM would probably involve something kinda sleight-of-handy or pickpockety! and I looooved that it made such a nice loop-around back to episode 1. ❤️ I was. kind of half-expecting him to just run out and punch Riddle in the nose again. but instead this time 'twas he who offed the queen's head! it was great! and he did it while stone-cold terrified out of his mind! because Ace is the only remotely normal or well-adjusted person at NRC and therefore the only one who is like "we're going to literally die, this is super effed up". but he did it anyway!!!! Sobbing uncontrollably reading through a dissertation about the college experience of students with ADHD. It is like reading a report about my life that just says over and over "My experiences are real. My hardships are real. I am not lazy, I am not dumb. My struggles were not my fault, and they were not a moral failing. The failure was with the system, not with me."

Here's a line that got me in particular:

"Hotez et al.(2022) compared the health, academic, and non-academic capacities of a nationally representative sample of U.S. first-year college students with ADHD and without ADHD. Students with ADHD self-reported lower academic aspirations and more feelings of depression and overwhelm, ranking themselves lower in their general emotional health. The fact that students with ADHD scored in the highest 10th percentile for many non-academic traits, such as artistic ability, computer skills, creativity, public speaking, social confidence, self-understanding and understanding of others, compassion, and risk-tasking, suggests that this population has strengths that are frequently underappreciated in academia."

basically my standards for gay/trans media these days are that it has to be something i'd still enjoy even if none of the characters were gay or trans. bc otherwise the whole thing is a waste of my fucking time. in 2012 i was so starved for gay representation that i'd consume anything that so much as mentioned queerness just to feel less alone but that's not the world we live in anymore and i don't want to go back to that world and i would be miserable continuing to pretend that gayness is the pinnacle of good writing in 2023 it feels so.... gross. i like being spoiled with a rapturous amount of gay content to choose from and plenty of the gay content i DON'T like is beloved by other queer people and i don't have to love every gay narrative or pretend to. so i'm no longer touching any shit that doesn't do the kind of cool storytelling that compels me. i did my years in the trenches.
