I tried something a little different for this one - I really wanted to capture that summer feel, with the strong sunlight and the shadows of the leaves and all. Ciccadas also Things are slowly normalizing in the household, but well. There's still trauma to live with. That's kind of a major theme in this series haha On the bright side we have normal father-son interactions between Toji and Megumi now (❁´◡`❁)

i've been sixteen every summer since
#yu gi oh#ygo dm#yugi mutou#(atem is there too but no he isnt. lol. etc)#nostalgia. summer. sunlight has a scent. the way concrete loves heat. and most importantly: harsh shading in manga spreads#this one goes out to yumi my friend yumi. they drew a comic thing with that foliage shadow+harsh shading for a summer scene#and after seeing it i decided if i dont also get in on it at least once i will wither and waste away#still on my journey to figure out how to have everything on earth (do both screentones and hatching without one overshadowing the other)#every time i try stuff i subject my current favourite guy to draw to my twisted whims. and also its been a hot second#since i last drew future/post-dsod yuugi. i miss him. hes as fun to draw as ever. love u bud

#yu gi oh#ygo dm#yugi mutou#yami yugi#anzu mazaki#mai kujaku#katsuya jonouchi#tea gardner#mai valentine#joey wheeler#worse manga AU#mai's first design is from duelist kingdom. her 2nd is battle city. im normal abt kujaku mai why do u ask#i really love the like. kinda two sides of a scale thing going on with anzu and mai where its like#anzu is kind of like. a tether to the outside world to the characters. she's always going to leave she always aims to eventually leave#and the world doesn't weigh that heavier than her friendship to the rest of the cast. she's the group's time keeper and a living reminder#that teenagehood eventually ends. and you'll have a life after all this too#while mai is the epitome of indulgence she plays the game in whatever ways that work out for her and she doesn't deny herself anything#in canon she's a professional duelist and especially in duelist kingdom she explicitly goes up against a boatload of teens#and then the thing with atem ribbing her abt her youthful beauty or whatever My Point Is. she has an attachment to young adulthood#that she never refuses to indulge. in a way that pings me as like mm. so she lost out on it for one reason or another and has#somewhat mythicalized it in her head. and is fighting against that imagined clock#adding direct violence to this in my shitty little dinky AU is erm. my favourite thing 😳#what if you like game/contact sport bc 😳 youve had to face violence in your personal life so you 😳 um. you seek out#spaces where aggressive behaviors are expected and regulated to a clear and enforced set of rules 😳#mai-yami kinship in the worse manga would be Incredible. sadly it would never happen bc it'd take longer for mai to get over#how attached to yuugi yami is/how yuugi seemingly flips between barely leashed lethal violence and somewhat desperate pacifism#than it'd take the crew to find yami's real name#and as long as she's uncomfortable and thus snide at yami's whole thing yami will respond with level 10 queendom#anyway that last one is a cap from a ceremonial duel thing ive picked up and put down like eight to twelve times last month lmao#ive realized my affinity for this kind of hatching is not playing well with the screentone. and i dont wanna let go of either

actually i can yap a little bit more abt goseiger here its my house. i grew up on wuxia so i always watch toku with an eye out for the fun choreo stuff and that's been some of my favourite parts of other seasons ive watched. and the fact that nobody manages to push gosei knight over until the third villain faction is so special to me. like he pretty much never gets those thrown across the screen in front of an explosion shots. every scene with the whole team being pushed back by a big attack is so funny bc everyone's rolling around on the floor while gosei knight's standing there like 🧍♂️

#not art#goseiger is not a very martially-focused season so seeing a character being shown so strongly through their choreo is really fun#grandpa batting away enemy attacks with one flick of his hand will never not be cool im sad to say#and like. other than this specifically goseiger does some really cool things with its shot composition and camera work sometimes#but especially relevant is at certain moments when it invokes iconic chambara stuff. like the sword slash -> fountain of spark#and that last attack against burajira of course#i feel like if i rewatch it i'll have more emotions abt the warstars and alata vs mons drake's first husband#but ngl i havent gotten properly into it yet at the warstars leg of the season lol. to me goseiger started out pretty slow#but hey im the guy who suffered through zyuohger for yamato's whale suit choreo so im sure if something lifechanging happened with#the warstars i wouldve noticed. i like most of the magic stuff going on with goseiger tho!#like in the middle of the last leg i had an epiphany that like. goseiger magic works kinda like folk buddhist enlightenment#if you achieve a deeper understanding of the scripture then you will be able to change people's heart and mind and throw fireball etc#which is why everyone was like learning lessons in the middle of fights and immediately became stronger while doing the same thing#and understanding this flipped my opinion on a buncha things in this season lmao#but also i just like that hyde's camimouflage came in clutch multiple times in fresh new ways like that's fun#while agri's stupid fucking rock throw works once. it's the best. uneven distribution

it makes me happy to see people who arent familiar with super sentai or goseiger specifically reblogging that comic bc yes i drew it in a way that's kinda disambiguated and i love seeing the things i intentionally do actually work. but also because if they go look for context i can whip out this screenshot
#not art#liveblogging goseiger to a friend while watching it is a good idea bc it lets me have a record of this kinda shit#listen. goseiger as a super sentai season is kinda strangely emotionally real in many ways#like. i like citing that moment right after burajira blew himself up to fuel his fuckass spell#and alata picks up the fragment of his sword and asks why they couldn't change his mind#and that kinda got me in the way thats like. you learn that burajira is also a gosei angel. as an english speaking third worlder#on the internet anglosphere. theres a resonance there i didnt expect at all#but! this emotional realness contrasts harshly with how completely fucked the cosmology of this season is#i went into the angel themed season kinda hounding for what exactly theyre doing with the angel theming#and thus sorta expecting the team to be like. made and programmed to save the earth and nothing else etc#did Not help that their finisher call is fucking ''punish'' lmao. And Then also goseiknight's storyline#that moment they mentioned that gosei angel is like. a job. fucking broke me i was screaming it was 4am#it was SO funny. gosei world had a court system and prison millenias before humans developed the same thing#what does this mean goseiger. what the fuck are you doing to me. why did you give metal alice's arc to burajira. i'll kill you

I just wanna say that in the most positive way possible, your Magis and Hyde piece made me burst into tears. They're so important to me and goseiger is overall so overlooked so the fact something so raw and perfectly THEM now exists from your passion and efforts means the world to me. Thank you
this is very sweet im glad u enjoy my little comic! goseiger really did surprise me with how it handled a number of topics, wuxia-style heroic sacrifices included. it feels worth writing a small thing for at least. im glad what i wrote found good company!

thanks! i was also a victim of star shaped ponytail yuugi lol i was in fact the patient zero. his general design was initially a doodle drawn in one of the figuring-out-the-style sheets to like, mess with and maybe bold up the leather wizard concept of the canon designs by scribbling out real quick what the opposite would be. and that was supposed to be it but he came out so beautiful i was taken over by the dark urge and before you know it i was going In on the worse manga AU just so i can draw more of him lol

#silent hill 2#james sunderland#hi lads. ohhh boy a lot happened since i was last here. crawling my way back to drawing#anyways whatever friend mim has been streaming sh2r recently and haha. hahaha. whahahahoohoohooooey#so far its lookin like. an entirely new game tbh. like nominally its sh2 but it's weaving in a Lot of other things that really isnt sh2#i dont! hate that! and there are moments they put in that i genuinely love. the lamp swinging after a pyramid head encounter for example#but around this ive been thinking abt just like. the concept the idea of remakes and retellings for a horror piece#and like. you do get something from a story you tell again and again. and the way that movement's hollistic and total in a book#like. idk how to express this the entirety of a story will exist at the same time right? after the first time it's told#the chronology in the story doesn't map perfectly onto real life. the beginning and the end exist at the same time#so like that you can choose to be in the forest forever. anyways it's cool that james will never be able to leave silent hill <3#no matter what ending you get at the end the next time you boot up the game there he'll be again in that wretched town :]#so the remake on purely a conceptual level tickles me like that. go there again. go to fucked up town maine USA ok. go there#anyways akira yamaoka's touchup of the soundtrack is fucking phenomenal regardless of the surrounding theme of laura II and#love psalm of eternal devotion have both ruined my life i NEED to play slitterhead so bad its not even funny

thanks! doing this idly has been teaching me a Lot about choreographing fight scenes in a comic, which hopefully i won't have to do something serious with any time soon haha. and what it's turned out for this AU is a bunch of people who are really desperate to never be hurt again get locked in an arms race to find a way to hurt other people that won't come around and get them eventually, which does justify the magic i think, but also it does push for the magic to also be completely brutal and the visual behavior of spirits and souls to be the same as, if not worse, than the regular body. tldr all the shit marik pulls in canon (especially the scarab hourglass) owns hard and i want in and also for it to be worse and more direct. i'm glad this has wider appeal than to just me lol. cheers!
