Fic-to-Art #38: Ozai carries Azula to the physicians' wing

This has been done for A WHILE now, but I didn't post it because the past days have been chaotic and not just on a personal level. For one thing, I really wasn't eager to drop this when people were losing their shit massively over the liveaction and its recontextualization of Azula and Ozai's dynamics, I didn't look forward to releasing this just to be told that whatever I've done in my story is somehow wrong, sooooooooo... that held me back, for a few days.

Then? The AI-Tumblr deal started to be talked about and I may or may not have freaked out about that too. Sooo... this is the first glazed and nightshaded piece of my creation, as consequence. The original, clean and proper version is available in my Patreon. Is this me being a dick to Tumblr-only people? Unfortunately, it very much isn't, I'm not trying to say that if you want the best iterations of my art, you should pay me for it... this is squarely, entirely, at staff/the CEO's feet. Obviously, there's the insecure side of me that goes "what makes you think they'd steal YOUR art when there are so many better artists out there!" but ultimately? AI is about taking everything en masse. It isn't a matter of developing a criteria about who makes the better art... it's just taking EVERYTHING and trying to repurpose it in whatever twisted way it needs to. Therefore? I think my choice is more of a matter of caution than anything else. Once AI bullshit dies out (and I really hope it does), we may just return to the same level of quality across all my accounts. For now, it is what it is.

ANYWAY! Point is this artwork is very much what my Patrons happened to vote for this month, a very shocking scene where Ozai reacted in the least foreseen way to Azula being attacked. Azula's confusion/terror comes from a place of not knowing what to do and being powerless to stop her father even if she doesn't feel comfortable with his help... but for once, Ozai isn't making a dreadful choice that will only devastate his daughter. He's actually worried about her health... and feeling genuine guilt over what landed her in the situation where she was in danger in the first place. Yes. I like me my complex Ozai who finally learned actions have consequences. He bores me to death otherwise :') if anyone STILL doesn't know that this whole situation is Gladiator-specific, then I shall clarify fully: this is artwork based on my fic. It's about a story that has been developing these characters for ALMOST ELEVEN YEARS now. It has nothing to do with whatever's going on in canon or in the liveaction, the scene in question was written almost two years ago and the artwork proposed and voted for several days before the liveaction aired. Ergo: there is no connection between this and that. Nor am I saying through this piece that Ozai is a good father. He is not. He can still be an interesting character to work with on a narrative level anyway :')

Alright. With that out of the way, hope you guys like this piece! The big one I haven't posted is ALSO finished, also glazed and nightshaded, but I think I might just end up posting it on the 26th if I don't have time to do anything big for our eleventh anniversary... yep, I'm so busy I don't even have a huge project in mind this time. Also? I have a lot to write and I'm finally happily writing it, and I would like to continue doing that...

a long-ass unstructured yappin about trod lambert because i really, really love them and i feel like they don't get enough recognition (maybe i just dont see it tho). (im not even putting the read more bar here, you're going with me even if you don't want to)

maybe it's my taste in characters (it's definitely it), but im much more fascinated by them than by narinder. and don't get me wrong, trod narinder is beautifully written, complex, interesting, and just plain fun to read. he's tall dark and handsome ™ emoboy (lovingly), he likes killing things but he also has a dream journal, is patient with kids and remembers that lamb likes red foods best. but you take one look at him and go "oh that cat has some baggage". and you take one look at lambert and go "oh, a goofy sheep". and then this sheep hits you with a moving truck.

like, what do i mean – narinder (im sorry for using you as an opposite example you're the second half of the pairing what can i do) is obviously complex. lambert is subtlety complex, moreover, they're deceivingly simple and they learned to hide their complexity very well. like we're 400k?? words in and we know pretty much nothing about them. their family? their father used to sing a song to them sometimes. what song? did it have lyrics? what situations was it for? how did their father's voice sound? next question. their long term goals, their fears, their nightmares? no. and we're in their pov half the time (and i know that this is intentional because sara has talked about this, about lambs tendencies to deflect and hide themselves behind masks).

i distinctly remember the moment i understood that i will love them as a character – it's when in earlier chapters (before 4th one im pretty sure) narinder hides an axe in his sleeves and lambert takes a look at him and goes "you don't cross your arms often. i don't think you yet realise that you're able to do it again. whatcha hiding in there?" and i was like. oh. they're smart. and im not saying it like i thought they weren't smart before that, im saying that it takes a certain type of attentiveness and skill to notice such small details and to put them together. and they drop that line with a smile and in a silly speaking manner ("watcha") that at that point annoys narinder to no end. yes, they're silly goofy and i love them for it, but this is barely the surface of what they're actually are. (oh and i also really like the fact that their unseriousness and light heartedness isn't a "fake personality", it's just one of the layers sides of their character)

in my native language we have this phrase that translates to "kindness should come with fists/kindness should have fists/whatever" (maybe there's a similar one in english but I've never heard of it) and i think it suits lambert incredibly much. they are kind, i would say radically kind at that. let's be honest the whole "enemies to friends" part of the fic exists and has any chance of existing only because lambert is continuously and stubbornly kind to narinder. he tries to kill them, they bring him food. he bashes their head into the altar, they make him clothes. he curses them again and again, they make sure he doesn't run out of candles. i once mentioned this part to my friend (that knows nothing about cotl and by extension trod but listens to my yapping anyway) and she said something along the lines of "he walks all over them but they continue to love and love and love" and i don't think that's it. lambert is incredibly, sometimes unreasonably kind (and selfishly, where the whole "why do you keep a murderer around" part comes in, but I'll talk about that later), but they have boundaries, their kindness, however generous and forgiving, has limits, and those limits are clear and hard once you reach them. they will never ever let anyone "walk all over" them, even if from the outside it looks like it, they know what they want and what they're willing to tolerate, and when those boundaries are broken they never hesitate to act.

circling back to the selfish kindness part. i love how forgiving bishops' isn't for bishops'sake. it's for theirs. they refuse to let the anger and resentment consume them (im pretty sure sara made a whole comic about this point specifically), they've seen what it does and they will not repeat the mistakes of gods that came before them. the sheer will to live and to live the best life you can in this is also so impressive and important to me – it's one thing to not let your god to sacrifice you, it's another to step your (rightful) anger on the throat no matter how hard it is because you know you won't be happy or even fully your own self if you don't. their mercy isn't a weakness, their kindness isn't an invitation to exploit them. almost all of the things lamber does they do for their own sake first and foremost (yes, even running themselves dry for their cult. they fully understand what they're doing and why – they want those under their care to prosper, and they're willing to do what it takes. the sacrifices they make are stemming from their want. it's different from exhausting yourself just because you were told so).

all this to say that i find them to be such a beautiful blend of things that are usually written as mutually exclusive. they're lighthearted and silly yet complex and smart. they're kind and forgiving yet selfish and incredibly able and willing to stand their ground. they're determined to make their own choices even if to outsiders those choices seem incredibly poor.

they're subversive at every step and they feel so alive and vivid because of that. i love them. thank you bamsara

Legacy and honouring of the dead are some of the more prevalent themes in both of Pix's stories. Not just in the obvious images of the Vigil and the Museum, but in S1!Pix's connection to the bees (symbol of the underworld), S2!Pix's obsession with bringing back what is already long gone, both of their work ethics surrounding these subjects. So it is very interesting to me that both of them consistently do not offer themselves this same honour. S1!Pix vowed to honour and treat death with utmost respect after the end heist, but later abandoned all his royal gear and equipment and intended to die alone with the vultures, before later disappearing and presumably dying without a trace, meaning both times nobody would have been able to pay their respects to him as he did to others. S2!Pix lives on after death much like the empire he's restoring, but does not allow himself to rest even for a few moments to process what he's been through. Both have consistent habits of jumping immediately to atone for trauma they've endured and work endlessly to "make up" for it instead of processing and accepting. Ultimately, this is what lead to S1!Pix's downfall. Time will only tell for S2!Pix. Empires' overall narrative may be clumsy at times but Pix's character arc is regularly one of the more consistent and complex ones available in MCYT and it seriously drives me up the wall!

Have been bingereading the Almosts lately for the first time (going slow only because the slowly eroding friendships pre anniversary are causing me physical pain, its absolutely amazing), and just discovered your six sentence prompts! Could you do one exploring what would happen if chris could survive the hannah attack-- specifically in a route where he shot ash and then she didnt open the door for him? 👀👀

It was dumb luck, that open window - dumb luck and about a million other pointless choices coalescing, adding up and slotting into just the right place at just the right time to save his miserable skin. Spurred on by adrenaline and terror and the very, very clear understanding that if he slipped even once he could very well end up so much blood spatter in the snow, he moved faster than he'd ever moved in his life, vaulting up the bin and through the still-open pane, tumbling onto the hard-packed floor the way he had earlier, back when Josh had still been his friend (read: back when he had still been alive).

The...the thing (the old guy with the flamethrower had called it something, but he couldn't remember now, not with the image of his body sinking into the snow so fresh in his mind) was too big to follow: Its spindly limbs gnashed and flailed, it screamed like the very voice of hell itself, but each of its swipes missed him, missed him, just barely missed him.

He sat there for a long time even after it left, not quite trusting his own senses, but when the numbness of his terror wore off, when he caught his breath and the burning in his lungs moved into his extremities instead, he carefully got up and tested his shaky legs; out of the storage room and into the lodge he toddled, taking (again) the exact same route an earlier version of him had wandered before, and it wasn't until he stepped into the great room that -

"Dude, holy shit, we thought you fucking died," Mike said, grabbing him by the arms and giving him a once-over, "talk about a lucky break, huh?"

"Yeah, real lucky," said a flat, unimpressed voice from the other side of the room, and Chris, feeling his stomach twist at the memory of yanking at the sliding door onto to find it locked, realized he couldn't meet Ashley's eyes; he realized too, as she breezed past him and Mike to make for the stairs, the basement, the others, that maybe, just maybe, dying out there might've been a kinder fate than having to face her again.

whenever i act like a mental patient abt mikey madison in the tags of pretty much anything i rb of her. i need yall to understand that the first time i ever saw her onscreen in scream 2022 she literally took my breath away. like im not even joking. literally physically took my breath away and im serious. i had never seen a bitch so bad in all my then 20 years of life and so i was sat there in the back row of that amc physically unable to breathe for a solid minute bc i was just that astounded. i literally met her and the FIRST words out of my mouth were “oh my god youre SOOOOOOO pretty!!!” like i do not have it in me to be even remotely normal abt her 😭
