i really want to do an in-depth costuming analysis on sunny because there's so much there. they all have distinctive styles with items frequently reused, adding to the realism of the show. it also demonstrates the way their characters want to be perceived by the world.
for example, dennis wears almost exclusively (most notably post- s2 and pre- s16) button down shirts in grays, whites, and blues, often with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, with jeans and sneakers, and occasionally long sleeved shirts (also rolled up at the elbows). this more formal choice of attire (a shade antithetical to his job as a bartender) demonstrates his inflated self-worth. he wants to be seen as 'better'- in terms of class, intellect, and general prowess- than his friends. by maintaining this more formal and elevated style of dress, he can maintain the facade that he is greater than the life he has chosen for himself. it also shows his reliance on his upper-class roots. by dressing in a preppier manner than the rest of the gang, he is again trying to assert his dominance over them. his slight switch to more casual attire in s16 (long-sleeved t-shirts, thin sweatshirts, etc.) could signal a shift in his characterization- as he has aged, perhaps he has let down this facade a bit? out of misanthropy or exhaustion or something else entirely.
mac wears (again almost exclusively, pre- s13) t-shirts, often with the sleeves cut off, the notorious navy-blue dickies, and combat boots. his t-shirts feature bold, aggressive, or satirical slogans, or (similar to charlie) presumably secondhand miscellaneous brand t-shirts. these slogans include "RIOT", "what are you looking at dicknose", "come to philly for the crack", and "beast coast". they display the same boisterous, aggressive nature as his personality. they exemplify his need for identity. what's more, the belligerent nature of these slogan t-shirts reinforces his masculinity to the world, perhaps compensating for his internalized homophobia. his removal of the t-shirt's sleeves highlights his muscles ('glamour muscles', as dennis points out- another example of his highly constructed facade), again allowing him to demonstrate his masculinity and compensate for his homosexuality. like dennis, his style of dress is an attempt to assert his dominance. after coming out (post s13), he utilizes this choice of fashion less, demonstrating his (slightly) diminished internal conflict.
i have less on charlie's wardrobe- just the obvious that he wears worn-out brand t-shirts from thrift stores or the trash because he doesn't care about his appearance. he doesn't try to maintain a facade as much as mac and dennis- he is (less) ashamed of who he is. he has a stronger sense of self than them, and is not constantly grappling with his identity.
I'm aware that these readings are very surface-level lol I'm just thinking... will probably do a pt2 about dee and frank and some minor characters :3
if you have anything to add or disagree with this interpretation let me know in the comments! would love to discuss ;P

The Season 2 Episode 8 of Helluva Boss recently was published quite spontaneously, so I'm writing the review while being very sleepy. First of all... It was weird to start the episode with some cheap musical. Blitzo's solo was especially... fair to middling. I'm sorry, but I think Brandon Rogers can't sing, his voice isn't actually made for singing(that's just my opinion tho). And also hey, they remembered the cherubs! Wow. Though they made them some utter idiots, much like the other characters, I mean.. So the plot is about Blitzo going shopping for a sex toy which(in his opinion) will really rejoice Stolas. Meanwhile, the cherubs are seen living on Earth and robbing humans to "redeem themselves and return to heaven"(I won't ask how it's supposed to work). They get caught by the D.H.O.R.K.S. folk(wow, you also remembered them too, nice work Vivzie), where the agents tell the cherubs that they built a portal to Hell and made high-tech robotic suits imitating the main IMP gang. The cherubs wear them and enter the portal, ending up in the Lust Ring, where Blitzo goes shopping. The main gang attacks them(though it wasn't shown that they even were there), and OF COURSE defeats the cherubs, throwing them through the portal. The episode ends with Blitzo finally visiting Stolas and talking to him. But I'll mention it later. So... I found this episode quite weird, nothing much to say about the visuals, though some frames look like they're from another show. How some characters(especially humans) are drawn looks like they're also from another show. But I guess they don't really organise anything normally, so it just is. I also find the tone of the episode too chaotic, but the whole show switches rapidly from "Edgy black comedy" to "Unserious absurd trash comedy" to "Drama/whining/'we care about characters and their development'" stuff. Another weird thing I found about visuals is that the creators put many overly cartoonish expressions to characters, to the point that it look just ridiculous, not even saying it's out of the general style.

Some of these expressions look kinda crooked, and the other are cartoonly, but not in a way that fits the whole show. It's not a slapstick comedy, and I don't understand why the writers pretend it is. Most of the time(and it's seen in this episode) it's just lazy and poor attempts at satire on our stupid and hypocritical society, but it just doesn't work mainly because the protagonists don't seem to have more brain cells than usual humans in this universe. Earth here, although, really seem to be a thing to relieve Vivzie's malice at... everything, I guess. There is no exact satire/mocking of someone or something, so I guess Vivzie just hates every living thing in general(especially kids, for some reason). That's why the humour in this episode also seems odd in a bad way. I don't like that HB sometimes pretends to be South Park, or Family Guy, or... a typical CN show, perhaps? It just doesn't look right, it's like the writers try to copy other better works instead of making their own vibes/special tone.
Tumblr media
Also they could use some more imagination
And about the ending... Stolas doesn't seem satisfied by Blitzo's behaviour(who acts overly sexual towards him which seems OOC), and starts... basically complaining about him being too sexual and not sensual. Guys... do you remember how it all started? Does Vivzie remember it? Literally in the 1 episode of 1 season it's shown that Stolas only uses Blitzo for his sexual pleasure, not caring about his comfort etc. He even calls him while he's on a dangerous mission. And there are lots of other moments where Stolas practically h*rasses Blitzo and makes him uncomfortable with his comments. And even since pilot doesn't seem to be canon(so Stolas didn't threaten Blitzo with r*pe), there are enough red flags about this mf. Yet in this episode he literally complains about receiving not so much love and care? That's... idk, that's shitty to say the least, and I don't know how the writers even managed. A literal abuser complaining about their partner being "not affectionate enough", that's fuckin' hilarious(sarcasm), and I say it as someone who had few abusers in my life. I still remember the previous episodes so I kinda don't buy it, but many people do, and that's sad. After that Blitzo [rightfully] angers at Stolas for complaining about lack of love while disrespecting him for being a lower class and using him as some object. Stolas only answers with "I think so very highly of you, I didn't realise you think so low of me", and kicks Blitzo out of his palace.
So... that's the episode. I have nothing much to say about it more, but I'm genuinely wondering does Vivzie even understand what she's doing and where she'll push the whole Stolas x Blitzo pairing(not that I fucking care, lol). These two are obviously in an abusive relationship, and the more they try to understand what even happened between them, the more confused they become. I personally think there's nothing to talk about with a guy like Stolas(though Blitzo too is a huge red flag), but idk, maybe Vivzie thinks that r*pists and abusers are changeable and are good deep down. Anyways, it was surely an odd episode, and I didn't really like it.

It's wild watching people react to ofmd/make posts about ofmd, who have clearly never watched any dry humour British/Aussie/Kiwi comedies before (Blackadder, Monty python, summer heights high etc) because they expect all of these dark heavy plotlines to have big dramatic soapy conclusions where everyone's crying and sincerely apologizing and hugging. And then they're surprised or disappointed when it inevitably doesn't.
It gets played off with a joke or everyone just immediately shrugs off any hurt or trauma they experienced and move on.
Like, that's the point gang. Subverting expectations, satirical takes on drama and historical shows. Ed caused monumental levels of havoc then Ed flapped his arms and hid under a blanket and all Stede had to do was compliment him now they're good again.
There are shows where one character is actively trying to harm another character at all times and it's played as a joke because it is one. You're not supposed to cancel the character doing the harm because they're a bad person. You're meant to go "Haha they're insane." And move on because the absurdity is intentional.
"It would never happen like that in real life!!" Yeah that's the point. Also it's a comedy show.
I'm not saying these shows aren't capable of powerful moments. If anything these shows are known for their powerful moments. Because they come at times when you don't expect them. I'm not devaluing the emotional impact or the writing. You're just not supposed to take it that seriously. It can simultaneously be a heartfelt meaningful show and also be highly satirical and making fun of itself.
You can gather so much genuine insight and symbolism from these silly little characters and them being absurd doesn't take away from that. Them having intense emotions one moment, then in literally the next scene they're goofing up a storm. The writer's take different avenues to solving conflict that's not dramatic proclamations and biting anger like you'd see in a drama.
Will Blackbeard actually apologize? Probably not lol. It doesn't take away from his character. It's not a cheap cop out. His YouTuber notesapp apology will probably be the only one and his heinous acts will continue to be brought up in the form of jokes bc that's the genre baby.

✨️JIMMY VALMER HEADCANONS ✨️
trigger warning: tiny mention of drug use and gangs
if these suck, sorry im sleepy rn
• James Anderson Valmer
He/Him
• Born on May 13th 2004
• 5'7" without his crutches, around 5'6" with them.
• Straight
• Dreams of being on SNL or at least being a writer for it.
• Huge crush on Taylor Tomlinson
• The minute he comes up with a joke he immediately tells Craig. Good or bad, he's the first ones he goes to for honest feedback. He regrets it sometimes though because he's brutally and a bit hurtfully straight forward
• Plays Dungeons and Dragons with his friends. He's always the Dungeon master.
• Best friends with Timmy and Scott Malkinson.
• After the fish sticks joke, he stayed in touch with a lot of comedic celebrities including Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler and Jay Leno. He still cringes when it's brought up though.
• Likes shows like Impractical Jokers, The Office, Parks and Rec, and Brooklyn 99
• Jimmy bonded with Craig while they both had their braces on. His actually funny jokes and teasing about them made Craig feel a lot better contrasted to his sisters' and classmates actual bullying.
• Tried to reconcile with Nathan even after the dude tried to straight up murder him (they were eventually cool as adults)
• One of the least bothered by Cartman's antics since they aren't around as much and Cartman is generally a lot nicer to Jimmy because he makes him laugh all the time. Unlike Clyde, Jimmy doesn't think Cartman is joking about the crazy shit he says but he tolerates the guy simply because he hasn't done anything super bad to him yet.
• Jimmy is the only one of the main boys who hasn't experimented with drugs. He's had plenty of beer and other liquors, but after the whole steroids thing, he didn't want to do any sort of drug ever again. However, he's been peer pressured to, mostly by Clyde and some of his fellow Crip members.
• Oh yeah, he's still a Crip. Him and Timmy. They never left the gang. They eventually realized that it's a violent gang in around middle school but decided not to leave since the Crips were so nice to them and offered protection against any bullies (which really came in handy in high school, the gang killed like 10 students who were picking on the boys.)
• Jimmy didn't even ask them to do that he just asked to get them off him and Timmys backs and they took it terrifyingly serious.
• Preforms at comedy clubs and mostly does improv. He's amazing at crowd work too.
• Sings in the shower but is kind of nervous to sing out loud. He was a good singer as a kid but puberty hit him at a weird time and his voice was screwed up and cracked for a long time. He eventually used this as new material for his stand-up but he was genuinely embarrassed about it.
• Tricia decorates his crutches with unicorn stickers.
• Got smacked in the mouth by Tolkien for saying the n word (due to influence from his Crip buddies)
• Jimmy hates being left out or not considered part of Craig's gang when he's literally almost always seen spending most of his time with them.
• Is in the school band and plays the trumpet.
• Has a BIG crush on Tammy but heard about her being a slut and is kind of on the fence about asking her out. He doesn’t even know about Kenny getting syphilis but he's still scared of getting an STD.
• LOVES the Bee movie. It's so incredibly stupid, it's like Jimmy's playground. Also he fucking loves Jerry Seinfeld.
• Also really likes the Muppets. He unironically had a crush on Miss Piggy (he will take that secret to the grave)
• Favorite book is iFunny by James Patterson and he heavily relates to Jamie Grimm being a cool disabled comedian with all he's going through. He just generally likes James Patterson books.
• Listens to The Lonely Island, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Bo Burnham, and Glorb (He's on YouTube)
• Thinks ThatVeganTeacher is 100% satire and funny as fuck and he doesn’t understand why Heidi gets annoyed when he shows her the womans TikTok's.
Listen I tried-
He's not easy to write for I borrowed some of these ideas I apologize
If you follow me and notice my work, they all have smth in common I usually elaborate on a mental health or trauma related issue on the characters.
For example, I mentioned Nichole and Tolkien's issues with living in a racist ass hick town like South Park and frequently being around a racist ass hick like Cartman.
Or with Stan, I mentioned his drinking and how he hates his shitty ass father.
However, since Jimmy is one of the only characters who hasn't been seen or even hinted at having any real, intense, long-term mental health problems, especially with his disability, I decided to go a mostly chill, lighthearted route with him.
I mentioned him and Timmy getting bullied but that happens during high school and middle school and it was more for comedic purposes so I could mention how the Crips may or may not have killed a bunch of mean teenagers bc of two disabled kids who accidentally joined in the first place💀
Tumblr media
And that does it for Craigs gang!! The little siblings are up next, it's time for my girl Karen!!!
Be prepared, I've given lots of thought to her.
Also I made a masterlist that I'm posting in like 3 minutes, with all my links all to my South Park works so far
Stay safe, drink water, byeeeeee :)

I am a gang leader. It could be called a mafia.
I am 14.
I have my own office. I have my own subordinates. They're loyal to me, they do whatever I tell them to. They are around their 30's.
When I was 10, they kidnapped me to serve them, but I murdered their boss. I am the dog that bites and kills. They are the dogs that weep.
I am 14.
I know how to use a weapon. I know how to kill. I am dangerous, and they all know this. My psychosis makes me violent, according to other people. I am a monster; untamed animal that cannot be euthanized, because without my brain, they are nothing.
I am the one that knows all and everything. I make the plans. I feed. My left hand man, he is quick. He knows all kind of torture methods. He is good with words. He is the one that gets the targets in a blink. He's precise. He cleans the mess I make whenever I murder.
He does the work for me, to wipe off my insanity stained on the floor.
I am 14.
I have around 6 main subordinates. They are mean and satire. They are sadistic and tall. They obey me like they're tied up. I give them a piece of my brain.
I don't have a home, nor a house. I live inside their heads. I am the words written on a page. To know your dark side is to know me. I am the shame and the shade, the guilt and the blame. I am you. I am them. They write me down and I am alive.
I like to light up a paper filled with filthy words and pretend it's a cigarette. I smoke thoughts. I smoke nightmares and crimes. And when they ask me to speak, I let tears fall from my eyes.
My office doesn't have a wall, nor a window. Like a dollhouse, it's an exposed room to the world.
I am 22.
I sit down today. I light up a page filled with words that don't exist. I smoke it. I cross my feet over the table and watch as people pass by and stare at them as they stare at me.
My open stomach bleeds. My tripes and viscera are everywhere and my subordinates like the anguish of wiping the floor. The world can't see it.
I don't think the world wants to see it.
But they are seeing it.
I don't care about it.
Just pretend you didn't see it.
I am 22. 14. 13. 12. 18. 17. 16. 19.
I won't die for your pleasure. If I point the gun at my head, I won't shoot.
I'm not shooting.
It's just a pen.

Okay, yeah... I thought so...
Replies screenshot from my add to this post this post that I accidentally found through an email notification of an @ that you'll see didn't even scan on my tumblr radar on a reblog chain I couldn't add on to again because I blocked OP (good ♥).
Tumblr media
This attempt at an @ is still hilarious by the way like OP was so afraid of me she blocked me I literally couldn't fucking hear or responded to any of what you little shits were saying ...
Tumblr media
@poutyrootveggie @duncebento @specialmouse Whoaaaaaaa you little mediocre weebshit abled-bodied special needs dunces! I was so shocked that the last tough guy @ from the miku simp with the tumblr badges literally didn't scan and I only found out about this from opening my email and clicking the blog notes!
Tumblr media
Yeah, I know you abled-bodied little shits wish god nuked you half as much as she nuked me since you're begging not to be perceived as feeling anything in your legs since you wanna be a vegetable that bad so you can have access to your weeby little comfort items and Mickey D's toys forever because you're never gonna grow up and get laid and I know you're gonna understand this as much as I understand tiktok memes because back in my day it was a Beelzebub Song but let me teach y'all's lil' steven universe sour cream studio ghibli guzzling wannabe misgendering unwashed surfer brah asses about something called hyperbole and sarcasm and metaphor and what a real dramatic "queer reading" means : It means I know and I don't care and if you want me to be nit picky about it y'all are too special needs to even mind your spelling...
And in this context means no disrespect but sometimes I wish I had as much the privilege and confidence as a low support needs abled-bodied autistic on social media explaining a thing about their Fandumb Oppression Olympics to be able to get away with typing like that much of a high support needs retarded version of myself while pretending to be that shocked by what a woman in a wheelchair is saying while causally misgendering her while I don't have any OCD regarding using any sort of punctuation while I'm doing that so abled bodies don't think I'm retarded, because I'm an abled-bodied autistic that can get away with doing the best impression of a retarded version of myself because I'm quirky brah it's not that deep but this lady who I just called "dude" and I have no idea how she feels about that doesn't Know Her Memes TM and that's what matters.
Not that a bunch of abled-bodied autistic weebs are trying to gang up on an actually disabled wheelchair user right now over what again, essentially amounts to a fandumb superiority/bully complex bigger than the weebs on Big Bang Theory and again, essentially started over Spoopynatch dishorse,,,,,
Because when abled-bodied autistics talk like that online or irl itssamememario but if my wheelchair bound arse ever did that in front of an older abled-bodied authority figure or anyone abled-bodied really...! Nitwit school. Special Needs Programing. 9PM curfew stuck in a group home.
Anyway, Homestuck ended years ago go lobotomize yourselves with a sharpy collective hallucination style if you wanna unlive that angy abt it!
Was shit like this why I'm getting so many new followers? Thanks but no thanks kidz go listen to your bops! ;) ♥
Have fun being stuck in your little tenderqueer fandumb mode forever because you made sure Hazbin is my last one but at least I'm a recovering Disney Adult using her Vivzietine patch instead of a little shit gen z otaku who's so spoiled I can get away with pretending to be more brain damaged than I actually am!! ;) ♥ X.O
(But oh, before I go @poutyrootveggie ...
"#ITS A MEME ABOUT PEOPLES UNNECECARY DOGSHIT HELP #I NEED THIS TO BE SATIRE" .. You mean a bunch of unnecessary dog shit like..? A bunch of weebs and apparent Homestuck and Supernatural fans trying to collectively dogpile on a Hazbin Hotel fan sharing on a fandumb post on fandumb website tungle.hel when they try to scold you about wishing you were doing s satire when they don't understand hyperbole and you wish that this abled bodied shit autistic with a Miku plushie for an icon and tumblr badges was a satire in and of themselves but deep down you know they're seriously pathetic enough to think, again that, causally misgendering and harassing a wheelchair bound woman for barking too loud about their own Special Interest Demon Discourse TM on a post made by a person with the studio ghibli cat TM as their icon talking about their demon shit rusty nail show discourse cause they're loser who liked that dog shit in the first place and I know I have far superior taste than any of ya so don't fucking @ me again... You think any of this cyberbully shit when I was just minding my own damn business and didn't even @ OP sharing sharing my fandom story fandumb story on a fandumb post on a fandumb website makes you look like the good ones? You mean pulling some "unnecessary dog shit" on me like that?
Well, jokes on you hon...This Hellhounds second bite fueled by Kesha's Cotten Candy bit down so hard on that lil' pussy OP got so scared of me that they blocked me back, meaning I couldn't even fucking hear you when you tried to @ me to stir shit up again and hows this for a final anime showdown? I'm pulling a Hatsune Miku putting my headphones back on so I won't be able to fucking hear you again.. You abled-bodied-wannabe-tard! LA! LA LA!`~ ♥

I LOVE picking at Christianity (my major is Abrahamic Religions lmao), but in a Good Omens context I always feel the need to point out that Neil and Terry had "no horse in this race" either- the condemning of homosexuality thing is a uniquely Christian interpretation, and Good Omens is a satire of Christianity written by an atheist and a Jewish person. There's another part of the book where Aziraphale criticizes Christianity as a whole for the commercialization of religion. So given the repeated emphasis on Aziraphale's association with queerness, and that GO doesn't shy away from critiquing religion, maybe we are meant to take this one at face Christian value. Especially considering that Sandalphon becomes outright violent with Aziraphale. The scene in the book where Aziraphale brings THIS up as an example of Heaven's cruelty, not Job or the Flood, and they sit in tense, solemn silence for a minute can be reinterpreted in the show as the 1967 scene, where Aziraphale gives Crowley a suicide pill the same year that sodomy became decriminalized in the UK. The constant theme of them being fearful of getting caught and Crowley mentioning having to pretend they're not a couple. You're right about Sodom and Gomorrah- but I think it's intended to be a homophobia thing, here.
Hmm, this is a complicated one because like - I do think that on some level, themes are more important than facts in the way Good Omens approaches Christianity. But also, Neil Gaiman has read the Bible. And I just don't see any way that you can read the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and think that a queer person would identify themselves with the rapists who died there.
There are stories where queer people are villainised but in a queer reading remain sympathetic, and it turns their fate into a tragedy. This really isn't one of them. It isn't even about queer people. The sexual acts threatened are all about cruelty and power.
In my opinion, the right wing Christian understanding of Sodom and Gomorrah is damaging to the queer community precisely because it characterises violent gang rape as a reasonable commentary on queer relationships. I don't know if you can take the story at face Christian value and still effectively satirise Christian homophobia. That said, and probably this is what you mean, I do think you can rewrite the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah to be about unjust punishment for queer love if you reframe the story that appears in the Bible as outrageous propaganda that's covering up something else.
My favourite version of this is one that totally doubles down on that horror of getting caught that you're talking about. This isn't what I think Neil would do with the story if he ever revisited it in depth, and it's soooo fucking tragic, but it would add so much baggage to Crowley and Aziraphale's dynamic that I can't help spinning it around in my mind like a pinwheel.
Like, ok, I know it's early, so early in their 6000 year situationship, but what if there was something between Crowley and Aziraphale, even then? I mean, what if something happened between them? And what if, that night in Sodom, Sandalphon found out?
It's a nightmare thought. It makes me feel sick to even contemplate. Knowing how the story ends - for Sodom and Gomorrah, for Crowley and Aziraphale - it's impossible not to see the consequences spiralling out from this mistake.
Sandalphon knows. Every interaction with him from then on becomes fraught with the secret he's holding over Aziraphale. Even if Sandalphon likes the prolonged fear and leverage he gets out of keeping this to himself more than the sadistic joy of outing Aziraphale, Aziraphale's fate is still in the hands of someone who despises him. He's never going to feel safe again.
Sodom and Gomorrah are razed to the ground. In the story's telling, the people who died are transformed into monsters, even though their only sin was shielding a demon who dared to know an angel.
(And Crowley tries, for them. He refuses their shelter. He tells them to believe whatever they hear about him. He flees into the night and hopes that when Sandalphon catches up he'll be far enough from the city to make a difference. But they know Crowley, round these parts. They know men like Sandalphon, too. When Sandalphon questions them on where Crowley is, not a single person will talk.
Aziraphale tries, too. Before he ran, Crowley took all the blame onto himself, taunting Sandalphon as though he'd forced himself on Aziraphale, a last desperate bid to protect him. But Aziraphale sees the holy fury in Sandalphon's eyes as he presses the people for answers, and he can't let anyone else suffer for him. He tells Sandalphon the truth. He begs Sandalphon to spare the city. And when Sandalphon looks at him with calm contempt and doesn't say a single word, Aziraphale realises he already knew.
Sodom and Gomorrah are razed to the ground, and Crowley and Aziraphale watch them burn. Crowley is Lot's wife, looking back on the destruction, and to be turned into a pillar of salt would be a kindness. Aziraphale is Lot's son-in-law, unable to get out, unable to believe it's happening until it's raining down around him.
The people of Sodom hold their ground. Sandalphon decides they're beyond saving. If they won't give Crowley up, they can burn for his crimes in his stead.)
It's their transgression but they aren't the ones paying the cost. And the cost is too fucking high. That's the whole story, right there. They are never going to talk about this. There isn't anything to say. For as long as they are an angel and a demon - for as long as they belong to Heaven and Hell - they are never going to touch each other again.

recommend me another depressing Korean gangster movie
>:D
Hmmm hmmm ok so if you say "another", that means you maybe already watched either "The Merciless" or "A Bittersweet Life" or perhaps both, which were the depressing Korean gangster movies I posted about most on here and both of which I very highly recommend...A Bittersweet Life is one of my favorite movies of all time, if not my top fave. In case you watched one but not the other:
A Bittersweet Life - a story about a man who catches one imperfect glimpse of beauty and throws away everything in a inevitable and helpless grasp at something he knows he can never have. I cried at the soundtrack for days after my first watch, haha.
The Merciless - a stylishly shot and perhaps more hardboiled noir about a chosen one who really meant it when he said he shouldn't be the chosen one, which falls apart in a spectacular and heartrending explosion of betrayal, confusion, and devastation. Like watching a trainwreck in slow motion.
These are most definitely my top 2 in the whole world so far, and honestly nothing else really plucks exactly those same chords with me in terms of overall excellence, but here's a few others nonetheless:
A Company Man - More of a straightforward shoot-em-up. Could be taken as either an action flick kinda sorta similar to Bittersweet Life (gangster wants out, gang won't let him go) or a harsh satire of South Korean work culture, which makes it (imho) slightly more interesting. Definitely depressing gangsters, for sure!
The Man from Nowhere - it's more of a vigilante justice/revenge thriller and a lot of people liked it, but unfortunately since it was one of the first in the genre (at least from South Korea), in my opinion it's since been done better. Or maybe I'm just chronically Kdrama-ing so I have more stringent standards, lol. The main lead's looks are to die for though if that's an aspect that appeals to you--and many folks loved it, 100% on Rotten Tomatoes!
The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil - On paper it looks amazing--a brash cop has to team up with a gangster to take down an even bigger criminal, exposing the corruption of the cops and the weird code of honor among the criminals. Usually that's my cup of tea and I came in SO ready to love this movie but...somehow didn't. I don't know why. It even had Ma Dong Seok, who's usually great! However, it got 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, so maybe you'll see something about it I missed if you watch it :)
Gangnam Blues - So, I didn't watch this one myself, but it's got Lee Min Ho and a historical-fiction take on the real-life corruption and money/power plays surrounding the creation of the glitzy Gangnam district from a marsh in the 70's, it looks interesting! I'll probably watch it in the future.
Speaking of, Ma Dong Seok is pretty much the go-to guy for Korean gangster movies. He's been in the genre since forever, if you search his name you'll likely find some good ones I haven't heard about.
I don't know if you're interested in extending your search to dramas, but in case you are:
Insider - one of THE best kdramas I've seen, hands down. The set-up is similar to The Merciless in that a guy goes undercover in prison to catch a gangster and ends up forming bonds with a high-ranking member while working on the inside. However, the similarities stop there. I think I binged it in like 3 days. It's gritty and doesn't let up, but the main guy is one of my favorite protagonists ever and the ending was fantastic
Big Mouth - it came out around the same time and also involves a wrongful imprisonment, but with a hilarious twist (along with some Very Not Hilarious ones) that make it a different flavor. I got busy and didn't finish (and also didn't have subtitles while it was airing)
Watcher - This one's more on the one-righteous-cop-vs-corrupt-conglomerate side of things, which will always and forever be my jam. The moody atmosphere and insanely tight writing make this one of my favorites. I've seen it like 4 or 5 times and seem to catch something new each time, the writing is extremely satisfying and there are great female characters too, which I'm all about.
Nobody Knows - I'm watching this one right now and it's also more on righteous detective vs killer side of things, but it's got a fascinating female lead, great characters, consistent plot and great storytelling so far.
Triangle - this one is about gangsters and casinos and is unique because it's one of the WORST kdramas I've EVER seen, but it's so bad it crosses the line right back into good again because it's so freaking funny how everyone manages to act the worst plot and the worst characters with the deepest sincerity. Everyone's gorgeous, which helps. It's funnier if you're a chronic Kdrama enjoyer to see all the worst tropes played out in the funniest ways with dead straight faces. They actually wrote it episode by episode based on viewer feedback and ran out of time at the end because the feedback was conflicting--and BOY does it show in unintentionally hilarious ways.
Bad and Crazy - I LOVE this drama, especially the first act. It's violent and dark, with comedy thrown in, and one of the most interesting and sensitive portrayals of a mental illness on screen that I've ever seen in both American and Korean TV. Yet another righteous-cop-vs-conglomerate plot, my beloved. I'll eat that storyline up each time though.
So that's movies and dramas off the top of my head--if I think of any other good ones, I'll let you know! Happy watching and omg, if any of those tickle your fancy I'd love to hear your thoughts! :D
*Ok, one runner up: From the director of "A Bittersweet Life", "A Tale of Two Sisters" is a psychological horror that is just. so. good. I'm not usually a horror person and I was hooked and think about it all the time, very excellent!

Random Risk E. Rat Notes before I go scrolling my dash at last
-The gang all singing together in the opening, I am kissing them on the lips
-The timing of that opening felt off though, the pacing/timing of the whole episode felt a little off.
-Dennis vaguely mentioning the noises in there, no I am not gonna blow this out of proportion and daydream overstimulation scenarios, I'm not, I'm not (that's a lie).
-Kinda dog-coded Frank again with the water, can't wait to read the essays on that.
-I find it really interesting they decided to team up Dee and Frank once again this season, though I'm too tired to formulate thoughts on why, I just... it's interesting. There's something there... something.
-Charden kicking the wall together, they're so stupid (affectionate) <3
-You can do whatever you want, the parents not around, I wonder if Mac's parents would just like dump him there so they wouldn't have to deal with him for the day and he'd end up in that timeout room a lot because he was angry, he needed a way to let out his anger... the fake gun he wanted to get with the tickets, oh guns again this season, I've got thoughts now for another post, don't mind me, very unrelated.
-I find it interesting the different levels of awareness, how they're all still stuck in the past because it's what they always knew, but on some level can understand why things had to change, especially when confronted with something they recognize as bad that say Frank still doesn't, yet they still cling to it because that's how it's been done, tradition, legacy, they don't actually want what what was there, the punishment? the guilt? even the rat boobs, but they want to cling on to it because they fear change, because if it changed, that means it was wrong, like how it changed from Frank's day, and then they have to face that their childhood memories of this one safe haven were not all roses, so they try to force the past back into the present to prove it was better then... and things go horribly wrong, because some things are better left in the past... seen through rose coloured glasses, but what happens when they do come to the surface, when they see it in new context, just like the whole show lately slowly becoming more tragic in hindsight with each passing detail. This episode reminds me of Big Mo in a way.
-Partly on that above note, for real, Charlie and Dennis sound so unenthusiastic/uninterested in those rat boobs, like an ace and a gay man looking at them just because they think they should, they think that's how it's supposed to be.
-Mac in the feelings room saying he's angry, and he feels misunderstood, unheard, just in this instance or in general, throughout? (Unheard, as he's not supposed to speak.) Misunderstood as our perception of him and his actions this season may not be as it seems. I also find it interesting he's separated from the gang again... And he still feels the need to be punished and feel shameful... maybe he thinks he doesn't deserve that relationship with Donald or Dennis, or... idk, just... much to think about. That theme of denial... needing to deny and look back to cope. To believe his parents still loved him, feeling guilty and being punished is what kids are supposed to go through and he’s not allergic to nuts and Dennis isn’t Johnny. (Also, off topic, Mac with his lil juice box, adorable.)
-Sending Dennis to the Feelings Centre immediately btw
-"I don't 100% understand what satire means." Dee, voice of Reddit today.
-In my mind, Dennis took the ear plugs :) noise sensitive dennis real to me
