The British Army in World War I was a primarily volunteer force at the war's onset, numbering around 700,000 soldiers, and vastly expanded as the war progressed. In 1916, the British government introduced conscription to meet the demands of trench warfare and the high casualties on the Western Front. The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) fought alongside French, Belgian, and Commonwealth forces in brutal battles, such as the Somme and Passchendaele, where they endured devastating losses. The army faced challenges in adapting to new military technologies, like machine guns, tanks, and poison gas, which transformed the nature of combat into a grueling and static war of attrition.

For the final day of Wimbledon, here is a little gifset of Bertie with his friend (and later equerry), Louis Greig as they played that ill-fated doubles match against the older and more experienced pairing of Herbert Roper Barret and Arthur Gore.

I also wanted to share two other lesser-known tournaments involving our dear Prince Bertie!

First: In 1922, four years before his appearance at Wimbledon, Bertie partnered in a mixed doubles game with Miss Peggy Ingram at a tennis party in Lady Crosfield’s home in Highgate. Here are two gifs from that day.

(I love the first gif, with Bertie swinging his racquet around like a petulant teenager. Guess they must have lost that day 😆)

And second: A year after Wimbledon, in 1927, Bertie undertook a tour of the British Empire, including a visit to Jamaica where he partnered with talented Jamaican sportsman Bertrand Milbourne Clark (below) in another game of doubles. Mr. Milbourne Clark was the All-Jamaica Tennis Champion for seven consecutive years - so I really hope they won this match!

This pairing was considered incredibly unusual at the time, and so was seen as a positive and progressive display of racial equality between both men, and friendship between both nations ☺️

Letty and “Babel” spoilers

There has been some discourse on Twitter about the fantasy novel “Babel” that it makes white women ‘uncomfortable’.

As a white lady myself, this is frustrating because it SHOULD make you uncomfortable and be more introspective about you own actions. And not like “this book is racist against white people.”

Spoilers, obviously! I can’t cut on Mobile. Get out now if you haven’t read it. Go read it and come back, I will wait.

I thought the portrayal of Letty, the only white character in the main cohort of four was quite nuanced. She sees some of the glitches in the Matrix as it were. She, more than anyone, understands why Robin killed his father but also the complicated feelings of regret at having done so. (Something I think Rami, in particular, doesn't "get".)

Letty’s father is probably quite similar to the Professor. We know he is an Admiral, so we know just from his title that he fully partakes in the violence of Empire that Robin didn’t want to see in the Professor. The Admiral has disowned Letty for being a woman who wants to go to Oxford and rebel against gender norms.

She still hopes to get back into his good graces, the way Robin hopes he can in the early parts of the novel. She is not radicalized.

She does not realize she never will. She does not know she could never be with Rami. That a dark-skinned man and a blonde woman together would get that man lynched in many places. She seems to (this is my interpretation) think that Victoire is her obstacle. She is upset he will dance with her. She kills him when he tries to protect Victoire when she thinks she is “saving” her friends.

Letty is working for an Evil Empire. She still hopes she will be accepted by it. She will never be. She will spend the rest of her days working for them as their tool, longing to be acknowledged. Longing to be her brother in her father’s eyes.

It actually made me think of Andy Serkis in “Andor”. He’s still hoping to go home from the prison. But there is, as that situation shows, only one way out of Evil Empire. Fighting it. And fighting is scary. People die. It’s violent. Andor and Robin both hope to avoid it too. Letty is not unique in not being able to see the situation clearly.

The only difference is that it is her white privilege that keeps her from seeing it. And if we can’t acknowledge that is a thing that white supremacy and the patriarchy of Empire do use as a tool to keep us in line? We won’t get out.

H. P. Lovecraft was an extreme Anglophile and considered himself a loyal Englishman all his life. On the other hand for many of the foreign-born subjects of the once mighty British Empire that enthusiam has been considerably lacking. Such an attitude is reflected quite plainly in the political cartoon below. Great Cthulhu, the 'squid-dragon' is today actually worshipped by fringe organizations who see him as a god, others who see him as a humorous plush toy, some who know him only as an evil monster to be battled against in roll playing games. Like the global status of the British Empire, Cthulhu's nature is perhaps a state of mind and individual perspective! (Exhibit 374)

On January 31st 1761 Lachlan MacQuarie, was born on Ulva, a small isle off the island of Mull.

Lachlan joined the Army in 1776 (aged 14) and served in Nova Scotia as well as New York and Jamaica. As a lieutenant he served in India from 1787 to 1801 and later in Egypt where he was involved in defeating the army of Napoleon. In 1810 Macquarie became Governor of New South Wales at a time when it was still being used as a penal colony. The previous Governor had been Captain Bligh of the “Bounty”.

Macquarie followed a policy of encouraging the former convicts to settle in Australia - despite opposition from the “free settlers” who wanted to retain privileges only for themselves. Australia would be a different place if he had not succeeded. He transformed Australia into a thriving country and Sydney from a shanty town to a Georgian city and is regarded as the “Father of Australia”.

His policy concerning the Aboriginals was an expression of the same humanitarian conscience. He organized the Native Institution (a school for Aboriginal children), a village at Elizabeth Bay for the Sydney tribe, an Aboriginal farm at George’s Head. Orders of merit and even an old general’s uniform were bestowed on deserving chiefs.

It must be noted also that he ordered The Appin Massacre, to round up all Aboriginal people in the area after some unrest. Those who resisted were to be shot. On 16 April 1816, at least 14 were killed by shooting; others were driven to jump to their deaths into a rocky gorge, near Broughton Pass.

So he wasn’t perfect, but who is, a bit of a rogue as well by all accounts, was adverse a wee bit of embezzlement, but managed to wriggle out of it, “laws” he laid down were of the strict Presbyterian upbringing on the Islands on the Inner Hebrides, nude sunbathing was banned as was “shooting a neighbour’s dog on a Sunday” As a Scot his ability to have a good drink were evident, of his army life in India he “took to the field” with “eight dozen bottles of brandy and Madeira” and “a quantity of gin”. One of his diary entries, penned after a big night out, shakily read, “No beer for three months’!

For the Australians reading this Lachlan also set aside land in Sydney for "recreation and amusement of the inhabitants of the town” He named it Hyde Park, it was here Australia’s first sanctioned horse racing took place. At one of the fairs at the park he organised, “ladies raced in sacks for a cheese” where men would bet on the results and have a laugh! At another two men competed in a mile foot race before slugging it out for 56 rounds in Australia’s first bare knuckle prize fight. Now the remark about the sack race might make you think he was a misogynist, maybe he was, but he was ahead of his time and a revolutionary for the fairer sex, giving plum jobs to women, with reformed banknote thief Elizabeth Killett appointed to run the Sydney Market.

But his liberal attitude to the convicts finally was his downfall, Macquarie’s critics sparked a British government inquiry into his rule and the governor resigned, setting sail for Britain in 1822 with a shipload of kangaroos for his friends and patrons it was said that…

“as a Scotsman he was drawn to an animal with an inbuilt sporran”. Other men may lay claim to be “The Father of Australia” but are any as colourful as oor Lachlan?

Macquarie died in London in 1824 while fighting charges made against him as Governor. He was buried in a Mausoleum on the Isle of Mul in a mausoleum near Salen with his wife, daughter and later son. The grave is maintained by the National Trust of Australia and is inscribed “The Father of Australia”.

As I stated earlier, and with a lot of these anniversaries about people born during the days of the British Empire, Macquarie was heavily involved in atrocities. I will point to one quote attributed to him....... in 1816 around the time of the Appin massacre, that all Indigenous people “from Sydney onwards are to be made prisoners of war, and if they resist they are to be shot and their bodies hung from trees in the most conspicuous places near where they fall, so as to strike terror into the hearts of the surviving natives”

With the British East India Company (BEIC) ascendant, the Maratha or the Sikh polities did not invoke Hindustan in their political claims.

There was a brief last resurgence of Hindustan in 1857 CE. The rebels and revolutionaries who opposed the British East India Company (BEIC) rule rallied to the flag of the Mughal Sultan, Bahadur Shah Zafar. He was once again, hailed as the Shahanshah-i Hindustan (Emperor of Hindustan) - clearly there remained an idea of Hindustan.

After violently crushing the revolution, Queen Victoria took British India under her direct rule and assumed the title of Empress of India, sending Bahadur Shah Zafar to die in exile in Burma.

...And so, (as) per (the poet) Mirza Ghalib, Hindustan became the past. ❞

Some have complained about the memes being disrespectful. You're actually legally obligated to make fun of Israeli propaganda and Zionists. I don't make the rules.

Edit 4: Gazans have specifically asked us to put every effort into pushing for a ceasefire instead of donations. "Raising humanitarian aid" is a grift Western governments are pushing right now to deflect from the fact that they're sending billions to Israel to keep carpet bombing Gazans. As long as the blockades are still in place there will never be enough aid for two million people. (UPDATE: PLEASE DONATE to the Gazan's GoFundMe fundraisers to help them buy food and get out of Rafah into Egypt. E-SIMs, food and medical supplies are also essential. Please donate to the orgs linked in the How You Can Help. Go on the strikes. DO NOT STOP PROTESTING.)

The twitter accounts I reposted as it was given to me and I just now realized it had too many Israeli voices and almost none of the Palestinians I'm following, so it's being edited. (Update: done!) also removed sources like Jewish Voices of Peace and Breaking the Silence that do good work but have come under fair criticism from Palestinians.

Edit 14 6th May '24: I've stopped updating this masterlist so some things, like journalists still left in Gaza and how to support the student protests are missing. I've had to take a step back and am no longer able to track these things down on my own, and I've hit the '100 links per post' limit, but if you can leave suggestions for updates along with links in either the replies or my asks I will try and add them.

Edit 15 10th August: added to Palestinian allies list and reworked the Help for Palestine section. There's been a racist harrassment campaign against the Palestinian Tumblrs that vetted the Gaza fundraisers based off one mistake made by a Gazan who doesn't understand English. If you're an ally, shut that shit down. Even if you donate to a scam GFM, you're only out some coffee money; if everyone stops donating to all the GFMs in fear of scams, those families die.
