I adore finding original true colour footage of our lovely King George VI ❤️
There is so little available that I am always surprised to see his tanned skin (from spending so much time outdoors!) and the brightness of his ribbon medals.

Check out the way he just eyeballs the camera for a split second. You better look sharp and behave! Bertie’s always watching you…

If princess Diana had become the queen chances are the monarchy wouldn’t be falling in surport instead we got two of least popular royals as king and queen

It's National Puppy Day today, have this absolutely precious illustration of Elizabeth II and her beloved corgis. It's from the book "The Corgi and the Queen", written by Caroline Perry and illustrated by Lydia Corry. It's all about the Queen's enduring love of the dogs so associated with her now, starting with the ones her family owned and then her own beloved Susan who started her own Corgi Dynasty. (I also learned Susan was snuck into the coach with Elizabeth and Philip as they drove around London after their wedding! How cute).
Book is highly recommended, it made me smile and cry, and even contains family trees both royal AND corgi!

Personally I think they should bring back the tradition of the King’s Champion riding in full armor in to the coronation banquet to meet any potential challengers.

Along with my love of all those Historical Novels About Tudors the other thing that entertains me about the monarchy (who are, let us be clear, A Bad Idea) is the State Opening of Parliament, because it is absolutely mental. As it involves several instutions given to declaring anything that happens more than once to be "a tradition" and has been happening for a while the number of accumulated traditions is off the fucking charts and many of them recall interesting bits of history and/or exist mostly out of spite.
Oh, the Monarch will come to Parliament, sure, but only if you let them keep one MP hostage for the duration and we search the cellars first to check for gunpowder. But he's not allowed into the Commons while it's in session, because the last time a British monarch did that he tried to arrest some of the MPs, so he can go to the other chamber and we'll come to see him. Except the couple of MPs who will stay in the Commons throughout because they don't believe in the monarchy. (Most famously Dennis Skinner, who took the opportunity of the visit to heckle Black Rod to "tell her to pay her taxes." And rightly so.)
So we all proceed and the monarch comes in wearing a crown and all that shit, and several MPs have been specially selected to heckle them Because Symbolism, and the monarch sits down on a throne and reads a speech that we all know they didn't write which outlines what "my government" plans for the next session of Parliament. And with that done the monarch pisses off again in great ceremony and the Commons kick off the new session by introducing a bill from 1727 that nobody has any intention of doing anything with but the point is that the monarch didn't list this as one of the things parliament were going to deal with so by doing it they're sticking up the middle finger because damn it we're not your servants even if we technically are. We shall do what we want, and what we want is the Outlawries Bill.
In case I have failed to make this clear - all of these things still happen. They happen every year. They will most likely happen this year too. We all know this is bizarre but we keep doing it anyway. We like to go on about how we're a free and very functional democracy, but we also make sure the Head of State doesn't set foot in one of the parliamentary chambers in case he decides to arrest everyone for treason.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to His Majesty King George VI; dearest Albert Frederick Arthur George; and, of course, our darling Bertie.
128 years old today, and forever handsome & delightful ❤️
