Stargate Atlantis: "Aurora"

been thinking too much about how good the team's doppelganger nightmares are!!!

i actually think teyla's nightmare is the most interesting because it is so packed full of things.

we're back to teyla before the expedition meets her. back on athos. and john is there. in her pre-john space. he's not supposed to be there. he's invading that space.

ronon assumes she and john are on a date and doesn't believe her when she says they're not. a fear of people misinterpreting her relationships AND a fear of not being believed, even by her friends.

rodney showing up and talking about strange readings. teyla's always doing her best to understand science and earth stuff, but she must fear being on the back foot in these areas. also she has a healthy fear of when rodney is afraid.

john starts menacing her and being intimidating, and later bugjohn is there and attacking her. she has some residual fear of the incident in the gym where pre-bug!john attacked and kissed her for sure. but also she has some fear that she can't trust john. that john will hurt and betray her.

john intimidates her by picking at another fear--that people don't trust her. that the atlantis crew doesn't trust her. and that they never have. (please see: season 1 and bates etc)

john specifically points out her connection to the wraith and the wraith queen and the fact that she's been contaminated by that connection, something she has feared since learning of her connection with the wraith.

then there is wraith culling happening outside. her people are being hurt. her father is dying again. she's trapped in the tent and can do nothing to help them. and she is also going to be killed by the wraith because

iratus john is going to feed on her.

also this is all very chaotic and overlapping and disorganized and she can't really keep up with it all.

it's just So Layered!!!

ronon's dream comes in stages and they're all So Good. first, he's on atlantis, but he's alone. everyone is gone, and he doesn't know why. they've abandoned him or they've been killed and both of those options are just as bad as the other because he's alone. ronon has a such a hard time trusting that he has a home and community and stability on atlantis and here it is. gone. he's been abandoned or he's the only survivor (again).

then he's running again. another fear. alone on a planet he doesn't know with nothing but his body and his instinct to survive. back where he was before meeting the atlantis crew.

and finally he meets john. who he's immediately relieved to see, because he trusts john. despite everything that's happened, john's given him that home and community and stability he has such a hard time trusting. john's the linchpin of it all for him. and then john betrays him. (and this coupled with the long goodbye time where possessed john gets ronon shot and leaves him after tricking him into trusting him aaaaahhh)

and he gets buried alive. something even ronon can't fight his way out of.

rodney

there are a few things happening simultaneously in rodney's nightmare. 1: he is physically uncomfortable. he's sitting in the rain with the wrong gear. it is cold and wet and gross. 2. he is alone. he's been removed from his home and his team. 3. he has an impossible physical task. he has to row a boat back to atlantis. away from the big scary whale that's probably going to eat him. rowing a boat isn't easy, even on calm waters. and the ocean is not that. and physical fitness is not rodney's forte. and it's not something he can use his brain to fix. 4: john is sitting there insulting him. someone he trusts--someone who's supposed to be helping him (which is especially bad because it's different than he expected. it's against the plan.)--is just sitting there watching him struggle and telling him he's not good enough. because rodney is good at solving problems, but physical discomfort and brute strength problems are not the problems he's good at solving.

and then a big scary whale eats him. he's not equipped to solve any of these problems. nature is out of his control actually.

later, when he's armed with the right science and the right knowledge, he has no problem and no fear entering john's nightmare. he challenges doppeljohn head on. fierce as can be. because this is now a problem he can solve.

john

i've posted about this before. but there are just so many little layers in his short pre- fistfight scenes. rodney's death is only the tip of the iceberg for him. rodney dies--and it's john's fault. he was on a mission trying to save a teammate and he failed. again.

and then THEN the whole team confront him about it in the hallway. and they all blame him. he can't get words out in response, even though he tries because they're right. failing one of them meant failing all of them. the team are angry about his failure and his relationships with them are about to be ruined.

and then sam, his boss, comes at him to tell him he's compromised by this and he's losing his job because of it too. his fear is not just losing rodney, it's losing everything because of his own failure.

it's just one mistake that sends his whole life into free fall.

and then! the fact that doppeljohn assumed his form in his military uniform. and he has to fight him. aaaaaahh. and he's losing to him. that john doesn't think that who he is at his core. his soft zippy shirt, no more friends, failure of a self. can actually beat what the military has turned him into. or who it has turned him into for others. this is about john's self image. and it is so!!!! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh

(and the energy being chose this form. chose the military version of john. it's not wearing what he's wearing on the mission--leather jacket and tacvest. it's wearing john's standard military uniform. right from the start this is what it picked out of john's head as the most intimidating form)

Rewatching Stargate Atlantis s1 atm for character reasons and something I didn't really pick up on the first time is the friendship between Sheppard and Carson and its been lovely noticing all those little moments

hi! I'm here to talk about Rodney McKay and how his tendency to catastrophicize is actually an attempt to self soothe

I'm going to be using the episode No Man's Land as an example because I'm literally rewatching that episode now so it's fresh in my memory lol

people (fandom and in-show) tend to treat Rodney as a whiney coward when he starts his "death talk" but actually I think that's self soothing to him. a way to control an uncontrollable situation.

when he's stuck in that wraith cocoon THE ONLY THING HE CAN CONTROL IS PLANNING FOR EVERY SCENARIO he is on a wraith ship in a claustrophobic cocoon knowing full well that they are headed straight to earth. the only thing he can control is knowing all the ways this could end, whether that's being fed on by the wraith or dying instantly in an explosion or being burned in a fire or suffocating, either way he knows its going to happen and he is prepared. did it drive Ronan batshit? yes. was it his only available option to self soothe? also yes

Hi! Can you actually please elaborate on the stargate animorphs crossover thing? I am obsessed with both so this intrigues me 👀

OKAY! so this is more stargate atlantis + me playing fast and loose with animorphs canon, and an excuse to do a character study of john sheppard, because i love him.

this is part one, part two is here!

so in this au, long before john sheppard ever saw atlantis or the stargate, he knew that life existed beyond the stars. because john used to be tobias. for anyone more familiar with stargate than animorphs, tobias was trapped in the form of a redtail hawk, permanently, though he later regained the ability to morph into other forms, including his human self. in this au, the yeerk-human war was never revealed to the general populace, and everything was as hushed up as it could be. however, the us governement did not like the idea of someone with the morphing power they could not control, and therefore, shortly after the yeerks were defeated, tobias was forced by the us govt (and honestly as i type this i think maybe the rest of the living animorphs were involved bc they don't want tobias to have a lifespan of like 3 years as a hawk) to become a nothlit once more and trap himself in human form. he's placed by the government with a military family, and given a new name, since tobias at this point has been declared legally dead.

john sheppard grows up quiet and a little too intense for his peers who he is, a little too grown up (he is sixteen when the war ends but his human body was thirteen forever until it became his again). it takes him time to make his face emote like everyone else, to learn how to be charming to mask that hole inside him that longs to fly. (he never really kicks the prey drive - though catching darts out of the air does make for a fun party trick)

so he joins the air force. closest he'll get to flying again, there'll be no ellemist-ex-machina, but maybe he'll be able to capture a sliver of the life he lost. and john sheppard gets to see the stars, by a random, biological chance, and he can't help but wonder if it's not so random. if maybe his ATA is influenced by elfangor, by the eskafil device, by ellemist meddling - so much of his life has been touched by the unknown.

so john gets to atlantis like in canon, and quickly realizes that he is the only person in atlantis with clearance regarding the yeerk invasion. most of the early episodes go pretty much the same plot-wise, up until the genii invasion of atlantis. john going full guerrilla warfare/hawk mode is somehow more intense than in canon, and i think it definitely gets focus from his team. rodney, however, has been lowkey weirded out by some of john's behaviors since the start of the mission, having caught several of john's blank no-one-is-looking hawk expressions and has just been keeping a running tally of weird shit john does since, and this is just one more freaky fucking thing on john's tally.

nothing super comes of it though, and on the mission to chaya sar's planet, things end up changing for john quite a bit. this is where the au really kicks off, as chaya sar can sense something is different about john, and when he meets with her alone and she tells him she cannot intervene, she tells him that there is one thing she can do, just for him. it turns out that the ellemist is a rogue ancient who fucking loves meddling (told u we're fast and loose w/ animorphs canon) and because she would technically just be undoing some of that meddling, she can give john back his red-tailed hawk form, and only that, without a time limit.

so now john can literally fly again, and that changes things.

Hello my lovely! 😊 I've popped back in with another ask of my random atlantis thoughts as I'm going through my rewatch

Idk if it's ever said outright, but I'm pretty sure Teyla is the first friend John's ever had who's been pregnant. Like, he DOES NOT know what to do with her and he's overly protective (which is very sweet but clearly irritating for Teyla)

Bro is TERRIFIED because she's his family! And her baby is his family!! Especially considering the guilt he feels about losing Elizabeth and Carson, of course he's going to be fiercely protective of her!!😭

Sidenote: Ronon found her exercising and she was worried that she wouldn't be able to "keep up" with the rest of the team once the baby was born if she didn't and his response was literally "Who says you have to keep up?" that just 🥺 Literally saying they're going to take care of her no matter what. They're so family I can't 😭😭

john sheppard is afraid of clowns, iratus bugs, and pregnant women and that is fucking canon to me. that man would rather SCALE THE FUCKING TOWER than be around a pregnant woman and i for one think that's fucking hilarious

ALSO i know it was like. Huge Asshole Energy when john grounded teyla from missions but like. all i can think about is how john places the responsibility to keep his team safe 100% on his own shoulders, and i FULLY believe that his team (which is strongest for AR-1 but obviously extends to the whole city) includes the athosians, and by this point they've gone missing, and i really do think john believes he's to blame for it. i think johns harsh reaction was purely fear based- teyla's baby, who very well could end up being the Last Athosian, is at risk because they got shot by stunners. not only is john feeling the guilt from teyla getting stunned, but he now thinks he's putting her baby at risk. of course he freaks out!!!!!! he JUST found out about torren and in the same breath finds out he might've led teyla into a situation where she could lose her baby???????? anyways this was a lot to say yes john 100% sees teyla and torren as family and is SO overprotective of both of them.

also i'm literally never over teyla and ronon's friendship, i LOVE how ronon pivots between beating the shit out of teyla because he knows she'll give it as good as she gets and being the softest most tender soul with her. like the scene where they find out and he holds her hand and congratulates her and asks about kanan 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 IM GONNA SOB AT WORK THEYRE SO god i fucking love teyla and ronon's friendship it's SO fucking good

also you didn't mention this but i'm incapable of talking about teyla's pregnancy without commenting on how obsessed i am with the fact that rodney is the one who delivered her baby. like. i just. it's everything to me i genuinely think it's my favourite thing to happen in the entire show it was the BEST possible decision for the writers to make and i love it it's my favourite thing and i like to think rodney has a special bond with torren bc of it
