Commander Lyle Rourke x Girlfriend!Reader || Excerpt

Pictures are Rourke when he is away from his book nerd Y/N 😔

Plot: Just a lil snapshot of Rourke and his overstimulated girlfriend decompressing after a long day together.

Warnings: ---

You're fully immersed in the book you're reading, falling chandeliers and masked balls, so you pay no mind when Lyle pushed the door open. The door squeals on the hinges, and the bed creaks when he gets in behind you, and he groans with exhaustion and the pure relief of laying down in bed after a long day, but you don't look up. You've been together long enough that you don't have to.

You're both exhausted today. He's just home from a voyage, so you went out together and you stayed out for the entire damn day; now your bones ache and your ears ring and the only thing to calm your mind is your book.

After a few more moments and a page turned, Lyle rolls over and draws you into him, an arm around your waist. You finally release a sigh, feeling his body firm and warm against yours. God you missed him. "What's the book?" He asks, his gravelly voice quiet and soft as can be. You're tired, but you feel a certain warmth creep into your chest at his asking. He always asks about the books you read, and he always remembers; Its that military brain.

"No good old fashioned western, I'm afraid." You whisper back, a tiny ghost of a grin on your mouth- despite your achy body and slight headache from being out all day long.

"Thats alright, tell me anyway." Oh, he always sounds so grumpy. But its just his scary man voice- he means what he asks.

"... Phantom of the Opera. I picked it up at a book market a few weeks ago." The memory of the book market you went to alone, when Lyle was off on his treasure hunt, makes you happy. You wish he could've gone with you- you'd love to hold his hand while you browse. Watch the big scary man sift through the cowboy books for a bit and maybe pick up one. He'd carry all your books for you, never complaining (He'd want to. He'd roll his eyes when you aren't looking and maybe even sometimes when you are- but he wouldn't complain outright. You're his lady, and as such you demand a little more respect out of him.), and put 'build Y/N a new shelf' on his to-do list. "... its about a disfigured hermit in love with a beautiful chorus girl."

... Grinning, you can practically hear Lyle's eyeroll. "Huh." Too romantic for him.

"He also kills some people."

"Interesting book." He doesnt sound like he finds it interesting. He sounds like he finds it crazy. But again- you're his lady. And he's gotta at least pretend.

... finally you put your book down, face down and open to the page you were up to, and roll over under the covers to embrace the warmth emanating from from Lyle's chest. You give a deep sigh, burying your face in his chest. "I missed you." You whisper, exhausted but fully content in this moment. He'll go again, you know he will, and you love your life still when he's gone, but you've learned to enjoy these moments when he's here. With you. Thinking about you.

"Yeah I missed you too, darlin."

I just keep wondering what Atlantis: The Lost Empire would’ve been like if they’d actually kept the longer cut of the film. I would’ve loved to see more of everybody interacting with Milo and to understand their personalities more. This isn’t just for Helga and Rourke but everyone! Vinny, Sweet, Audrey, Mole, Cookie and Packard! Although yes I’d enjoy seeing Milo and Helga interact more. (internal screaming)

Milo would be a non-bender and a earth kingdom scholar who's goal in life is to find atlantis the fabled kingdom of the last living airbenders kida would be an air bender and princess of the airbending kingdom of Atlantis as well as a decliplined warrior who desires to save her dieing culture

Rourke, Vinny, Helga, packard would be fire benders Rourke a decliplined warrior and general of the fire nation army, a decorated war hero, Vinny a bomb expert from the fire nation colonies and not the fire nation homeland you never know if his explosions are from his bending or his man made designs, Helga a skilled acrobatic and bender who trained and traveld all over the world to learn from the best of the best, a blue fire bender, and Mrs Packard, oldest on the team, was a young girl during the last day of black sun skilled and knowledgeable perfers to use her bending to chain smoke and keep her coffee warm

sweet would be a water bender from the northern water tribe trained to be a healer but drafted into the war and became skilled as a warrior as well, knows healing from both the water tribe and earth kingdom due to his father being an earth bender and mother being a water bender 

audrey, mole, cookie would be earth benders Audrey a young prodigy and discovered her metal bending skills on her own in her father's forge perfering metal bending over traditional earth bending, mole an earthbender who grew up digging and earth bending his goal to become one with the badger moles digging tunnels below the village he grew up in and beyond and cookie an old timer who still rembers the civil war between ba sing se that drove him and a large group of lower class earth benders to move to the country side and founding new towns  idk that's my idea and I thought it was fun

Rourke isn't as evil as people think.

Hear me out on this

Rourke may not have gone through with the plan if he actually had any idea of what the Big Shiny Thing was actually capable of.

Remember, Rourke thinks it's just "some kind of a diamond" as Milo puts it. Even if Thaddeus had told him otheewise before, he clearly didn't believe it, as shown by the line "What's to know? It's big, it's shiny, it's gonna make us all rich." He's not buying Milo's "you don't know what you're tampering with", because in his mind, Milo is just trying to intimidate him out of his plan. Since Rourke doesn't know about Milo reading the murals (thinks he just went swimming), he thinks Milo's BSing the whole "it keeps the people alive thing". That's important too.

Rourke does not ever truly believe the crystal is keeping the people alive.

And why would he? The idea sounds completely absurd to someone with zero knowledge beyond "it's big and shiny". Even after Kida is transformed, though he's a little more wary of the crystal, he hides it and tries to go through with the original plan, because that's what he's been trained to do, to see a mission through to the end no matter what obstacles arise or what personal thoughts/feelings he has (Kida is an unfortunate casualty of the kind someone like Rourke is way too used to, a civilian caught in the midst of military combat, though to him, she's a civilian from the Enemy side). But he still does not believe in its connection to the people.

He also doesn't ever know that the crystal itself can be a weapon, and a catastrophically destructive one at that. Milo only finds this out after Rourke leaves, when he visits the dying king (if the mushroom cloud at the beginning of the film is any clue, the thing is like a very, very powerful nuke). And had that information been given, the difference between "diamond" and "superweapon" might have been drastic enough to at least make him pause and consider the outcomes. He'd sell a giant shiny rock to other countries, but he doesn't seem like someone who would knowingly give an enemy (or potential enemy) of the US a nuke-on-steroids during a war (WWI started a few months before the film takes place). And if he'd taken that pause, it may have been enough time to convince him of just what the crystal truly is to Atlantis. Maybe even enough time to fully dissuade him from taking it.

But without knowing what it is, and just seeing Kida transformed, yes he's more wary of it, but in his mind, he's in too deep at that point. He's passed the point of no return, there's no option to abort the mission anymore, not without risking a mutiny from the soldiers with them, so he has no choice but to continue. If he was truly out to kill people, he could easily have just shot Milo and the other deserters or had the soldiers shoot them. He never does, never considers it. After Kida transforms, he never points a gun at anyone or has someone else point a gun at anyone until the battle in the volcano starts. The two soldiers who shove Milo back don't point their guns at him, they cross them to form a barrier and push him. They don't use them as guns.

I guess my point is that killing people was never a part of Rourke's original plan, and is never his actual goal, and that seems to be hugely overlooked, despite how very important that should be to any analysis of him as a character.
