I want to clear up a mistake people make with Azula and Ursa.

Ursa didn’t play favorites.

Ursa didn’t think Azula was a monster.

Ursa simply, unequivocally, just didn’t enable Azula’s worst traits like Ozai did.

Ozai’s favorite child was Azula, but Ursa still loved her more.

Because enabling isn’t love.

What did Ozai’s enabling do? It made Azula into the type of person to never have any loyal friends. It made the type of person that Mai and Tai Lee would betray at the risk of their own lives.

Ursa pushed Azula to be with her friends. To be with Zuko. Ozai pushed Ursa away, and both kids suffered for it. Azula became a sadist, enjoying seeing her brother get burned—while Zuko was pushed away because he cared for his people.

Azula thought her mom hated her because her mom was the only one who cared enough to tell her no.

People have pointed out that Zuko goes from grunting a lot when fire bending to then being calmer and more fluid with his bending after meeting the dragons but no one has talked about Aang's air bending

In the first couple episodes he does this thing where he scrunches up his nose to do a big move with air, but by the end of the series he's pulling off theses amazing moves with little effort shown

A small love letter to Firebending

Maybe I'm late to the party, but I need to free my thoughts on Firebending.

Through most of ATLA, Firebending is seen as evil and dangerous. People fear the Fire Nation, and by proxy, Firebenders. Aang's nightmares are plagued by fire, and when he hurts Katara by accident, he swears off Firebending altogether.

Forebending is used to hurt and subjugate people. It kills and kidnaps. It destroys families and civilizations.

But then there are also moments where it is the opposite.

Iroh softly lights incense sticks with his Firebending to mourn his son on a lonely, grassy hill under a tree.

Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph warming themselves by the campfire after a long day, as they drift off while staring up at the stars.

Zuko makes another person smile by using his Firebending to brighten up a candle-lit fountain. It might have even been the first time he's used his Firebending in a kind, gentle way.

And when Aang holds a part of the ancient fire in his hands, his fear melts away and he remarks, "It feels like a little heartbeat." He feels life in it, and later recognizes it as energy.

As much as Zuko went through a transformation throughout ATLA, so did Firebending, and the way fire is perceived. I absolutely love everything about this show, but this in particular always gives me goosebumps.
