After the first pilot was rejected, Star Trek was almost completely recast with the exception of Mr Spock (Leonard Nimoy). The first episode of Star Trek aired on September 8, 1966. While The Man Trap was the first episode to air, it was actually the 6th one produced. Supposedly it was chosen as having more action than the other episodes. It was also supposedly one of the least favorites of Leonard Nimoy and William Shattner. The episode took place during 2266 (eleven years after the events of The Cage, which was the original pilot and later recut as The Menagerie). The episode introduced Captain James T Kirk (William Shatner), Dr McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Yeoman Janice Rand (Grace Lee Whitney), Sulu (George Takei), Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), and (off screen) Montgomery Scott (James Doohan). This is more graphing computer than television, isn't it? I guess we still have Ethel in both covers. Hovering over the 1965 "television" is the pompadour Dan Decarlo drew for his self-caricatures.

It does come off that in 1963 and then 1965, the Archie editorial staff happened on some Newsweek or New York Times articles on this new-fangled "television in the classroom" concept. The 1965 installments -- add this to that one -- differ in concept to the 1963 ones -- programming moving from talking heads concept to geometric shapes. The 1965 news articles must have focused on math class.

The jokes can be brought back for perennial usage. Come 1990 and they are taking shots at "Channel 1 News", which was a fairly horrible production, dumbed down news replete with commercial selling. I do not know how this set up was working in 1963 -- I can imagine a UHF station set up, but this 1990 story actually has no coherence. The production was a taped loop set to show at the beginning of the social studies / History / Civics class, and with one disgruntled teacher unhappily switching on. Also the teacher is pretty aware of technical problems in his classroom.

It is interesting to see the 1963 variant here lacks the imagination to foresee the extent of the consumer pull seen in the 1990 story.

I remember my teacher enjoyed my parody sketch of Channel 1 news just a little too much -- seemed disappointed that I did not do a second one. I am fairly sure Channel 1 was yanked the next year. A failed educational experiment, or realization of its debased nature.
