So was anyone going to tell me Nasch's kingdom had a name, or was I just expected to learn about The United Lands Of The Poseidon Ocean by randomly browsing the wiki trying to put together a proposed timeline of the Barian emperors in order of death?
#It has a name??? This changes EVERYTHING#okay maybe I already had it penciled in as being a cross cultural empire somewhere in the mediterranean and possibly parts of the atlantic#but the name 'poseidon' adds SO MUCH MORE evidence to my 'Nasch's kingdom and Jaden's kingdom are anthropologically related' theory#do we think theyre still a nation#are they near New Atlantis#do they have a team at the olympics#these are all equally important questions#yugioh#yugioh zexal#shark kastle#ygo zexal#emperor nasch

"Merag."
"You know, most people call me Rio these days." It wasn't that she had any problem with the name Merag. It was just as much her name as Rio was, maybe even moreso. It was about making a point, though. This wasn't the brother she knew and loved.
Nasch's eyes narrowed as he glared her down. "I assumed you would be with my other half. What do you want?"
"I was. But I needed to talk to you, too." She brought a hand up to her chest. Many times had she faced that glare, and never once had she backed down. Now was no exception. "What are you after, Nasch? The war's over. I know you're my brother's evil side. That doesn't mean any of us need to fight, though."
"Hmph. If anyone would understand, I thought it would be you. I still have a responsibility to Barian World, and I'm still loyal to Don Thousand. But more than that? I want dominance."
"'Dominance'?" Rio didn't understand.
"Over my other half," Nasch clarified. Not that he had to, but he wanted to. He wanted her to understand, so she could join him. "He has forgotten his responsibility and cast aside our god. Before we split, I was powerlesss against that. But this split is temporary. Now is my chance to seize power in our shared existence." He made a fist. "His time with humans made him soft, so it's only a matter of time before--"
"You're a fool."
Nasch could only stare at her after her interruption.
She went on, "You're too stubborn to see it. But you're a fool. It's your refusal to see you're wrong, the way you cast all your friends aside. Ryoga's bonds with humans made him kinder and helped him grow. Because of that, he's stronger than you'll ever be. You lost the war because you cast aside your humanity, and you'll lose now, too."
Taking a step back, Nasch's head tilted. "So, that's what you think. I see I won't convince you to join my side, then."
"That's right."
"Very well. I'll fight alone if I have to." With a swish of his cape, Nasch turned away. "We'll see who wins in the end... Rio."

honestly think that when i get around to drawing iris zexal, going to make a pointed effort of maybe actually having some of her facial features be subtly different from how i draw rio's. for reasons.
rambling nothing posting about iris's narrative stuff under readmore:
like i know the entire thing 'aww she looks like my dead sis-NOOO SHE DIED' my thing is i Understand the thematics/the reason why it's written like that, i just think they're a bit trite and i'm fighting it b/c i think it does a disservice to rio and a disservice to like, interesting stuff that coulda been done re:iris.
like, n.asch projecting and going 'wow pog my dead sister reincarnated? my dead sister sent this person to me? pog???' after merag's death re:iris when later it's confirmed she was DEFINITIVELY NOT THAT and the entire backstory of iris' parents getting vaporized by vector's army, like... i think you can do a lot of interesting writing about her, and the entire 'being a rock ghost 8 year old forever probably sucks a bit huh'. i just think about it a lot, and i think writing with themes of 'yeah no. iris is not rio/merag, iris was not 'sent' by rio/merag, iris is an eight year old whose family got killed and then died as well and became a rock ghost, probably' would be an interesting way to tackle a character who doesn't get addressed a lot as like. a character and not a plot device. not necessarily b/c that's the Intended(tm) reading of iris' situation/the narrative there, but because i think it'd be cool, and i like it when people flesh out background girls by actually treating them as people.
#invidia card talk#disclaimer: I LIKE I THINK NASCH IS FUN. he's just an immortal rock 14 year old + a child emperor in his past life with all that entails#'wasp you like talking about green haired characters and their writing. ' ... yeah :[

Ryouga/Nasch Redesign
Click for better quality!
More Notes about it under the cut!
-Firstly I wanted to make his past life a.k.a. Nasch look DIFFERENT than Ryouga himself. Past lives do not work that way. They may look similar, but not directly a copy paste version. I mean, Ryouga Kamishiro isn’t even Nasch reincarnated. It is implied, if not canon, that the Kamishiros are Descendants of Nasch and Merag (however so, because I don’t think they had kids??), so I guess it makes sense, that they look similar. But definitely not the same! I also made Nasch older than Ryouga, because I won‘t have a 14 year old fight in a war and lose every single one of his soldiers (and his sister and adopted daughter). Here he‘s 19.
-Which also brings me to my trans!Ryouga headcanon, where I think that Ryouga was actually born a girl— Important! Ryouga, not Nasch! Nasch was born as a boy. — So Ryouga was originally a girl, but after the accident, when Nasch‘s soul entered her/his body, Ryouga started to feel more like a boy, because her/his soul was now actually a male and not female anymore.
-Also I finally settled down, what nationalities I think all the Barinas are. As you can see I headcanon Nasch and Merag as Greek (maybe Japanese mixed as Ryouga and Rio, but still part Greek, because of the descendants thing). I just blame the locations of their ruins on volcanic locations shift, as someone informed me about it on my map post. You‘ll see what I came up with for the others, I’m especially excited for Vector.
-I also liked the Heterochromia in his Barian form, so I think he had it already as Nasch and only got it back, when regaining his memories and barian powers. Because the left eye of the barians only turns red when dueling, so they can see the monsters and all. You could say they see… Duel Spirits. But that’s the thing. They can only see them in duels or when they „activate“ their red eye. But I think Nasch, as the leader of the barians is so powerful that his red eye is permanent, making him able to see duel spirits all the time. (I mean Vector had to absorb 4 barian emperors to even truly compete with Nasch, meaning Nasch alone is as powerful as 5 barian emperors)
-I changed his necklace to an actual shark tooth, because I was so disappointed, when I found out it wasn’t a real shark tooth. I mean, yeah it‘s cute that it had a family picture of them in it, but I’m not saying he doesn’t have that anymore, just not in a necklace. I think the tooth is something he got it from his father, because I headcanon he was a marine biologist. Ryouga also wants to become a marine biologist and study sharks. Because being emperor isn’t really an option in this time.
-We know Ryouga and Rio share silver rings and he still has his, he now just has a golden extra one with a sapphire, which serves as a promise ring for him and Durbe. Durbe of course also has one, also golden with a ruby.
-He, Rio and Durbe all share friendship bracelets, with their barian aura colours. It was Rio‘s idea, but Durbe made them.
-I also love the idea of him and Rio having shark teeth. Were they born with them? No one knows…
-Now for the Nasch redesign, I gave him a more casual kind of look. Of course he has some armour, but only wears it later in the story, when really going into war.
-I also gave him a crow BECAUSE KING NEEDS A CROWN and made it look similar to his barian crown, but with extra wings on them. He let them be added to the crown, to show his connection to Durbe and the alliance with his king indirectly to the whole kingdom. Also because he misses him. Of course not every one was fine with this, but Nasch was such a beloved ruler, no one dared to oppose him.
-I got the Idea for the sword switch from a fanfic I read about them once, where they actually got their swords together ad named them after each others stars of the big dipper. So here they got their swords, but switched them and named them after the other (Dubhe and Benetnasch) so they could still fight side by side, even when apart.
If you have any other questions about the redesigns, ask away, because as you can tell I really like to yap about them! :)

Duel Nature
@zexalmonth
D - Duel
This little one-shot takes place basically during the last episode of the series, because I felt kind of cheated by how rushed the ending was.
Yuma wants to connect with Vector after all the Barians are revived, and what better way than a duel between friends? But Vector already has enough battles to fight.
----
They materialized on the school roof, of all places. All of them at once, coming to on the ground, like they’d all been part of some bullshit revival meeting—ha, revival, literally—and only fainted, not straight-up died.
For a moment, Vector thought to himself that this had to be some new form of hell. Perhaps the last dying gasp of his consciousness was playing tricks on him, or whatever fragment of him still remained within Don Thousand was being kept as a plaything—it would be fitting. But there was Astral, the smug glowing bastard, descending from the sky like the saint every one of his kind thought they were.
Wait. No, he wasn’t there, not fully. Vector couldn’t feel his presence like he normally could.
“What the hell? Nasch was standing up, in his stupidly teenage body holding his head of stupidly teenage hair in his hands and grimacing. “We’re alive?”
We. Oh no. Oh, no, no, no.
Vector reached out to create a portal, to get away from Nasch and the other emperors before they all inevitably turned their attention to him, the guy who’d stabbed every last one of them in the back, and—nothing happened.
There was nothing there.
Don’t panic. Vector affixed a manic grin onto his face and shoved his errant hands into the pockets of his pants, noting with relief that at least he hadn’t been revived in the idiotic school uniform. Instead his favorite black and white coat was a reassuring weight on his shoulders. Small mercies. Think.
The last thing he remembered was the torrential wind, the rock crumbling under his fingers, getting sucked into… well…
Vector felt as if that same invisible hand was squeezing his core again and sucked in a breath, arm twitching with the urge to cover his chest with one hand. Bright red eyes flashed in his memory, and his empty stomach twisted.
No, there was something else. A sense of time passing, like he’d merely been asleep. And he’d felt Astral’s presence somewhere close, unmistakably. That unnervingly clear resonance, artificial, perfect.
“I have used the numeron code to revive all of you,” Astral was saying, “because that is Yuma’s wish. These human bodies are yours to use as you desire, and will age and die the same as other humans’. Earth is your home now.”
Nasch looked stunned by this, until Yuma leapt down from who-knows-where like a whooping cannonball. “Shark!! Alito! Shark sis! Ahh, Astral, it worked!!”
The sound of his so-happy-I-could-cry voice shouting out the rest of their names was like razors in Vector’s chest.
“It’s Rio,” Merag snapped. “Or Merag, pick one!”
Yuma was too busy jumping Nasch, who honestly might have hit his head and lost all power of speech judging by the incoherent noises coming from his mouth.
Vector took a step backward, unable to tear his eyes off the sight. Yuma, the last hand that had touched his, promising to—
He turned abruptly for the door to the stairs, skin prickling with chills.
His hand touched the knob. “Vector,” Mizael said, and that’s the push he needs to hurry up and yank it open, slipping through before anyone else can say a thing.
With the door closed, he couldn’t hear their voices anymore. Still not a whisper of resonance, either.
Just humans, now? Forever? Until he dies again—what, of old age? The thought was so wrong Vector heard a breathless laugh escape him as he hurried down the stairs.
The laugh quickly turned to an embarrassing squawk as a glowing yellow hand gripped his arm and threw him against the wall. Ow. Fuck.
“Where are you sneaking off to?” Mizael’s pompous voice always made Vector fantasize about snipping off that stupid hair-wing (ear??) with a little concentrated chaos, and he wondered if it had that effect on anyone else. It had to, right?
“Ohoh, Miza-chan, you already miss me that much?” Vector strained to keep a suave voice. That was the problem with human bodies. They had inconvenient things like lungs and throats and flight instincts. And were too easy to pin against walls by someone with a body of condensed energy and crystal.
And why the hell was Mizael Barian anyway?!
“Don’t bother to lie. You’re always up to something.”
“Too bad, our private time is already getting interrupted~!” Vector hated the frayed edge of his own voice and forced his face into a foxlike grin as he saw the unmistakable burst of light and color heralding the arrival of several other Barians.
One, two, three, four, five.
And Astral, floating in through the ceiling.
Vector realized with a bitter taste in his mouth that the only human heart pounding in this damn stairwell was his. And no matter how desperately he reached for that easy familiar power, it was gone.
“Let him go, Mizael,” Nasch ordered calmly.
Mizael made a reluctant noise. “And what? Let him slink off to scheme up even more ways to betray the rest of us?”
Ugh, he could feel Nasch’s eyes on him. That much hadn’t changed. That pompous, benevolent stare, measuring him up, deciding just how much pre-emptive disapproval to dish out. Vector looked carelessly toward the ceiling instead, keeping everyone in his periphery, and sighed as if this was all just a minor annoyance.
“The war for Barian world is over,” Nasch mutters. “We lost.”
Vector thought he had no feeling left in him for Barian world. But something about the defeated voice Nasch just used really pissed him off.
“Oh, Astral, you really wiped it all out?” A tiny hint of Shingetsu’s whiny voice broke through. “Then just took the seven of us back home to be your pets? I didn’t know you had such a taste for the exotic~”
Right then the sound of Yuma’s feet pounding on the stairs above them made Vector’s stupid human heart literally skip a beat, and not in a cute way—in fact it made him wonder if it was trying to stop entirely. That would have been convenient.
“Wait up, guys!” Yuma panted desperately.
Mizael let go of Vector’s arm with a hmph, but Girag had moved his bulk to block the path going down, so all Vector could do was straighten up and think fast. Nasch turned human again first as Yuma approached, then the others, but not so fast that Yuma didn’t catch sight of the transformation as he rounded the corner, panting and rosy-cheeked.
“W-what’re you all in such a hurry for?” Yuma laughed. “I mean, you can do whatever you want now that you’re alive again, but since the big fight is over, I was hoping we could all just be friends!”
Awkward silence. Nasch and Alito started to talk at the same time, then stopped and gave each other looks.
“To answer your question, Vector,” Astral said solemnly, “I did not destroy Barian world. It has been merged with Astral world, and all the souls that existed within each world now exist side by side.”
“All except for us,” Durbe said thoughtfully, adjusting his glasses.
Astral nodded once. “Yuma thought you all deserved a second chance, considering the way your human lives were cut short by Don Thousand’s manipulations.”
Yuma’s presence was bad enough on its own. But Vector was going to be damned—well, he already was—if he gave the other former emperors time to realize just how short his end of the stick was this time. Assuming they didn’t already know, in which case he wasn’t going to give them time to rub it in his face either.
“Yuma-kun~!” Vector cried out, just the slightest edge of Shingetsu still clinging on. “So you defeated Don Thousand after all?”
“Yeah!” Yuma looks thrilled, though there is a flicker of something in his eyes that Vector instinctively turns away from. “You don’t have to worry anymore. Uh, any of you! So, how about it? We’re not enemies anymore, right?”
“To exist in this world as humans means we will need some form of income,” Durbe said.
Astral pointed to each of them in turn, somewhere near their pockets. “I took the liberty of giving you all a modest starting amount. Yuma reminded me that Shark has quite a lot of money and a rather large mansion as well.”
Nasch makes an odd face with his shoulders tensed, like he’s suppressing his initial instinct to grimace. “Uh, yeah, you guys can crash there until you get your own places I guess.”
“I’m sure it’s for the best if I get a start on looking right away,” Vector said, a sharp edge slipping through the sickening sweet of his voice. “So excuse me please, Girag~”
Girag stepped aside at Nasch’s nod of permission, and with another prickle of feeling all their eyes on his neck, Vector hurried—but not too fast—down the stairs.
“Hey, wait right here, okay guys? I’ll be right back!” Yuma’s cheerful voice was already faint enough Vector could only just hear it.
Shit. Shit shit shit. He’d just been reaching into his pocket to see what Astral thought was a modest amount of cash. Vector looked for somewhere to hide. It would be so easy if he could just portal away like usual.
But there was nowhere except the nearest exit from the stairwell. He rushed for it and was halfway down the hall when the door clacked back open behind him. Ugh. There was no helping it.
At least the others weren’t watching.
“Shinge—ah—Vect—ehh, what should I call you??” Yuma laughed awkwardly as he approached.
“Vector,” Vector said in a low voice, not turning around.
Those puppy-like footsteps stumbled to a halt a little ways behind him. “O-okay, Vector! Hey, I was just coming to say, if you don’t want to stay with the other guys, you can come stay with me!”
This guy. Was he serious?
Heat crept up Vector’s back. Not so strange, really. Yuma was like a human sun, burning into him even when his eyes were closed, and in front of Vector, all that existed was the black scar of his own shadow, distorting the hallway floor like another gateway to hell. Sweat trickled down his back. Ugh. Sweat. The smell of his own fear and human-ness was already rising from inside his jacket. And his stomach felt hollow and cramped.
He was going to have to eat soon. Sleep. Piss. Shower. Get a job… what a joke. Hilarious! Astral sure had a sadistic sense of humor. Either that or he was much more oblivious than Vector had thought, setting Vector up with the perfect excuse to tug on Yuma’s heart strings. It would be so easy.
Pull out the waterworks. Turn around with tears in his eyes. Yuma-kun, I think I’m the only one who can’t access my Barian powers! The others are going to murder me in my sleep if I don’t stay with you. But I don’t want to cause any more trouble….
And then. And then. He would be the fox invited into the hen-house. Curl up and play with the foolish little chick who thought he could be friends with someone who’d just as soon swallow him whole. Bat the dumb kid around a bit while he giggles, not even realizing he’s getting slowly crushed by this “game.” How could Vector do anything else? It was just his nature, like a cat chasing a mouse. And Yuma was such a good mouse.
“Vector?” Yuma’s voice was a little breathless, and too close.
Vector turned sideways with half a glare out the window, still not looking directly at him. Yeah, like the sun… too dangerous to stare at for long.
“Yuma… you’re a real piece of work, you know that?”
Yuma laughed. Of course he did. A sheepish little laugh, scratching his head and waving his hands.
“Everybody says that! But I’m just glad you’re okay now.”
“Yeah….” Vector said distantly, a strange buzzing feeling beginning under his skin. Like an inverted sense of resonance, like a phantom limb, like the part of him that had been Barian had simply gone numb and was coming back as pins and needles. For a moment it excited him, but when there was still no response to his reach for power, he realized he was shivering. No, this wasn’t a sudden awakening. Maybe it was more like a premonition of an addict’s withdrawal.
Yuma, to his credit, hadn’t touched him yet. He wasn’t even quite within arm’s reach. From the little Vector could see out of the corner of his eye, Yuma’s smile wavered for a moment, then burst back brighter.
“What do you want, Yuma?” Vector asked, with false politeness.
“I, uhhhh… I want to duel you!” Yuma burst out.
“Duel?” Vector let the incredulous slant to his voice stay. “You want me to duel you? Again? How long has it even been since you were last dueling for your life? Haven’t you had enough by now?” Something was seriously wrong with this kid. Maybe he really did get off on near-death experiences.
Yuma wasn’t intimidated, still laughing nervously. “But it’s the best way for me to know what you’re feeling right now so—!” He groped for his duel disk.
Vector couldn’t help it. A sick laugh burst from him. “Yuma… What am I supposed to duel you with?” He spread his empty hands, indicating his lack of disk, d-gazer, or even deck. “And what for? To understand one another? I already understand you perfectly!”
But how could he, when Yuma was so beyond logic. Was his will to save Vector actually unbreakable? All Vector knew was that he never, ever wanted to find out. No, there would be no more dueling with Yuma. If that shred of a conscience Yuma believed in really still existed, Vector would have to refrain from taking such bait.
“Well, dueling is fun!” Yuma said stubbornly with a childish pout. “Can’t we just duel as friends for once?”
“Maybe later,” Vector sighed airily, though his lungs felt like they were operating at half-capacity as it was. “I have things to take care of and youhave lots of other friends to catch up with, don’t you? So, I’ll see you at school tomorrow, Yuma-kun.”
Yuma lit up at this reassurance, just as Vector hoped he would. “Yeah!! See you tomorrow, Shi—v-Vector! Ahaha!”
He gave Vector a big thumbs-up and, though it cost him about five years of whatever his new human lifespan is, Vector gave him one back—barely restraining the impulse to cringe when Yuma taps knuckles with him—before turning to walk away.
He didn’t hear Yuma’s footsteps withdraw, and so he didn’t look back over his shoulder until he’s turned the corner toward the building’s exit.
The act was worth it. Even three more minutes of being in Yuma’s orbit might have destroyed his resolve. As it was, his mind still raced with the perverse impulse to think ahead, to anticipate another meeting, another chance to—what?
No. He was going to stay far, far away from Yuma and all the other Barians. And do what? All his ambition, all his drive, it was just the restless energy of a rabid animal. He could duel (once he managed to build a deck, he thought bitterly), but it would have to be with enemies. Enemies or nobodies. People who didn’t matter, who didn’t know what he once was, and didn’t know what he was (what was he?) now. Vector chewed his thumbnail as his shoulders crept up toward his ears, the sun setting to his right as he set out on the nearest path to the waterfront. The water itself was blindingly glittering when he came within sight of it, the light breeze a bit warm. He wanted to close his eyes against it but couldn’t help staring at the dazzling brightness.
It was going to be gone soon. The sun was setting.
To his left, his shadow was so long it crept up a building on the opposite side of the street. And when he looked at it directly, the neon afterimage of the glittering light on the water swam and danced on the darkness of it like mosquito larvae in a pond, expanding and swelling into the reaching pale sickly hands of ghosts.
He closed his eyes, but they were still there, even closer, behind his eyelids, the afterimage burning and burning until he was panting and all he could do was turn back toward the light in desperation.
At a bench on the edge of the water, he sat, watching the sun go down. He let his eyes take in every last ray, knowing exactly what would be waiting for him in the shadows when it was gone.

I like to imagine that post-canon the Barian Emperors favorite past times is just correcting inaccuracies in history articles or some shit
like if it’s an article about their time period they just “um actually” the fucking article writers and publishers, of course anonymously
I also like to imagine that people misinterpret Durbe aiding Nasch as treason(as in betrayal), so Ryoga is just like “UM HE ACTUALLY HAD HIS KING’S PERMISSION TO GO AID HIS FRIEND IN BATTLE”
Edit: I JUST HAD A THOUGHT! IMAGE THE DUB CHANGES TO ALITO’S AND VECTOR’S BACKSTORIES ARE CHANGES MADE BY STUPID ARTICLE WRITERS! So I imagine it going something like this: “The mad prince exiled all his people and then himself” “no he didn’t are you stupid?” “The gladiator was exiled” “He was executed it’s literally in the wall inscriptions!”
#yugioh#yugioh zexal#barians#ryoga kamishiro#durbe#(ig bc they’re named)#the treason thing is based off one of my friends thinking that he was committing treason by helping Nasch

My opinions on the Barian Emperors’ designs :3!!!
Nasch — “hehe silly hair, a lot of these big crystals in the same kind of area, the red cape makes him look cooler + brings a colour other than purple that works in abundance, gotta have a cape *^0^*, I love his whole face (look how angry he looks here LMAO), turtle neck :0, plain fr </3 (the trousers, leggings things??), supposed to be an accent colour but it feels too much to be a proper accent, just like his normal shoes :3”
Marin — “she’s so cool <3, the colours go so cool together as well?? - the lighter colours for her body/dress thing contrasting the darker hair??? Just wowie :00, these shoulder plates look cool?? Yippee!!, I love the longer hair they give her, her dress/skirt design is just WOAH!!, the diamond theme again fr (more subtle + nicer than Nasch’s design tbh /nm), HEELS?? /pos)”
Vector — “Gonna be honest I thought more of the frets would be warm tones but turns out they are colder when I colour picked them, I like this multi-coloured skin he has going on, and how the diamonds run along the divide, goddamn I didn’t notice the diamond theme until I did this tbh like Woah :0, not too fond of this yknow? (The yellow thing on his chest) should have added more yellow around (feels like you need to look there instead of where you would usually wanna look (the face)), I love the colour palette for Vector. Like mostly greys/blacks with an accent of the reds in terms of mostly diamonds, I can’t decide whether I like or dislike the wings tbh </3 (I’m leaning more to like), could scratch out someone’s eye with those nails, just as he would want it to be like :3, hehhe Idk I just like his shoes :3, + I love his face ^0^, (btw if Vector has no Fans I’m dead)”
Alito — “sorry I’m not too fond of his design </3, I feel like this would be slightly better (the mask thingy) with that reddish-brown colour but idk??, gotta have the diamonds, this colour (the green one) is a nice contrast to the warmer tones used, this darker colour makes the design better, his shoes are nice though (PROBBALY my favourite thing about his design), maybe using this red more could have been better?? (Just relegated to his hair), these are cool (the arm thingys)”
Girag — “ooooo face shrouded in darkness, silly!! (Horns), silly little Mohawk :3 - random use of that colour though - one off can look good/fit with the design but doesn’t feel like it does here, idk how to feel about this collar </3, his design does not feel derailed enough tbh - especially compared to the better designs imo (Vector + Marin), Woah more diamonds! Who would have guessed!!, how could have I never noticed this before??? (The G on the belt) THIS IS SO STUPIDD /Pos”
Mizar — “The mask is very unique + translates in a fun way to his human design as well, love them being the 2nd tallest fr <3, love it (the face), I’m sorry but his shoulders + his torso?? I just- it basically ruins his design for me /nm (not entirely true but yknow), Just feels REALLY yellow at the torso, good choice to not make his arms too much of one colour (the bandages (same goes with his legs)), I don’t like this belt </3, I love this little additional for the clothes because even though they are aliens it feels weird for them to be completely naked, mandatory crystals fr, don’t know what’s going on here but lacks the nice patterns that Marin had </3”
Dumon — “I’m sorry but I really don’t like Dumon’s design-, hair + face colour mostly blends together like hardly different, these are cute :3 makes me think of a cat, mandatory diamonds fr, the facial markings look cool :3, I’m sorry but this belt is NOT it, shoulder plates look cool, mostly the other barians are wearing SOMETHING but not him”
-
Quick ranking:
7. Dumon - sorry but his design just doesn’t look nice to me. I’m not too attached to his character either so that doesn’t help. He does look WILDLY better in his human form though
6. Girag - orginally gonna put Alito in this place but Girag is much more plain imo like go girl give us nothing!!! /nm (they did do him so dirty in both his forms though </3)
5. Alito - sorry Alito but your design is not much better. Like I like your boots and that reddish-brown colour but idk I’m just not too fond of it (prefer his human design). It is growing on me but I still dislike it </3
4/3. Mizar/Nasch - I couldn’t decide who to put above the other so they are tying. I love their faces like they both look AMAZING looking at just that part of their designs but I feel like as you look further down it’s like “uhmmm-“
2. Vector - I love Vector so much so it’s not surprising that I’m gonna also be fond of his design too. Like when I first starting rewatching Zexal I forgot most stuff so when this silly little guy appeared on my screen I started to LOVE him (and now he’s one of my favourite Yugioh characters) and it 100% helps that I love his design fr
1. Marin - MY GOD DID THEY DO HER SO WELL??? Like just look at her design and try TRY to tell me that she doesn’t look wonderful?? YOU CANT!!! Like she looks just so amazing. It just makes me wish that she had more focus because her design is making me see her in a brighter light than what they gave to here tbh. Like the backstory for her + Nasch is MAINLY focused on Nasch I get how he’s important and everything but I would like to see more of her </3 (the episode of her as Rio showing how cool she is beating all those people who just want her to manage their teams cause she’s pretty is just SO COOL!!)
-
I do love all these characters though (some more than others LMAO) and not trying to insult the character design at all just wanted to look at these designs and point out what I liked and didn’t <3333
(Also I felt like i had to write out all what I put on the actual images CAUSE MY HANDWRITING IS BASICALLY UNREADABLE TO 90% OF PEOPLE </3)
#yourlocalpurplekinnie#yourlocalpurplekinnie info dumps <3#yugioh#ygo#yugioh zexal#barians#I am NOT a Professional character designer or anything#these are just my personal opinions yknow!!!

Zexal Month Week 2 Day 5: C is for Chaos
@zexalmonth Did I use this day to make the Barian Lore we never got from the show? Yes. Am I sorry? Hell no!
"Yuma don't touch the water!"
"Huh? Why?" Nasch or Shark, depending who's asking, sighed at Yuma who stood near a lake on Barian World and asked himself how he got himself in this situation.
'Oh yeah because no doesn't belong in his vocabulary.' Shark thought with a deadpanned expression. After the battle against Don Thousand and establishing peace between Astral World and Barian World with Yuma’s and Astral's help along with stabilizing the planet with the Numeron Code courtesy of Astral, Yuma had begged Shark to let him see Barian World now that the planet was decently safe for its citizens and outsiders. Shark had been unsure in bringing Yuma to his planet due to things he experienced there but Yuma assured him that compared to the time he went to Astral World it had been a walk in the park. (Shark didn't believe him for a second though given he saw Yuma's memories thanks to the resonance of his Baria Lapis and Yuma's Emperor's Key) So after much persuasion here he was acting as Yuma's guide to Barian World. And of course Yuma was driving him crazy.
"The waters are dangerous for Barians. It burns us. Who knows how bad it'll be for humans." He stated.
"But you and Astral helped fix things up with the Numeron Code, right?" Yuma asked. "So I'm sure it's fine."
"You’re too optimistic and a hazard to your health." Shark snapped. But he stayed close to Yuma as he kneeled down next to the water. Yuma carefully reached just barely touching the water surface and moved back.
"Well?" Shark asked.
"No burning but it is warm." Yuma admitted. "Come on, give it a try!"
Shark looked at the water suspiciously for a moment but then sighed. He did worked with Astral to make this place more safe for his people. Might as well test things out now then later. He reached and carefully touched the water just as Yuma said there was no burning but a warm sensation. He cupped the water for some to fill in the palm of his hand before letting it pour down his hand.
"Warm right?" Yuma grinned, making Shark glance at him and huff amused.
"Guess it is." He relented, moving his hand back. He waved his hands over the water letting his Chaos flow making it glow much to Yuma's awe.
"That was your Chaos, right?" Yuma asked.
"Yeah, I just wanted to make sure there was nothing dangerous in the water." Shark stated. Yuma looked at his best friend and a thought occurred to him.
"How does it all work for you guys?" Yuma asked. "I mean I get you guys aren’t entirely made out of energy like Astral so..."
"Well it's true we're not entirely made of energy like Astral beings but that doesn’t mean we don't need it either." Shark huffed, standing to which Yuma followed. "Barians have a Baria Crystal inside them that acts as our hearts in a way it’s also our Soul as well and keeps us alive with Chaos."
"But I thought you used your Baria Lapis to use Chaos." Yuma said, confused.
"It acts as more of a medium for us especially when we're in places that don't have chaos in the environment like on Earth." Shark explained. "The Lapis helps us control and refine our Chaos in use instead of just letting out a blast of it."
"Oh that would be bad." Yuma sweatdropped. "So then what about your bodies in general? It's not made of well flesh like me or energy like Astral."
Shark hummed and held out his hand to Yuma. He was confused that much Shark knew yet Yuma took his hand and grew wide eyed by the rough sturdy feeling.
"We're not made from organic matter but made and as hard as stone on the outside even our attire is a part of us and if we're damaged we can use our Chaos energy to reform our bodies hence why we have to stock up on Chaos energy inside us." Shark explained to an awed Yuma. "We also have veins but we refer to them as Chaos vessels that are attached to the Baria Crystal heart inside us and connect within our entire body. That's what allows us to move and such."
"But... Then how do you feel pain and stuff?" Yuma asked.
"You can think of our Chaos as a sensor with our Baria Lapis along with the smaller gems on our bodies." Shark replied, pointing at the one on his forehead. "And when connecting with someone close we would press our gems together to share our emotions, our memories, our very beings to one another. It's... The most open we can be."
Yuma looked awed looking at Shark as if staring at him for the first time and Shark had to admit it made him twitch but then Yuma paled as if something came to him.
"What?" Shark questioned.
"Ah.... Th-Then if the crystal that’s your heart...." Yuma began, as if afraid to ask. "If the Baria Crystal inside you shatters then.... Does that mean you..."
"Yes we would die." Shark confirmed with a solemn nod, making Yuma choke shaking. "But that's all the more reason why our bodies are what they are so that they won’t shatter."
That seemed to relieve Yuma a bit, sighing softly in relief to which Shark huffed fondly by Yuma's worry for his well-being per usual. He then patted Yuma's back, making the human yelp in surprise.
"Come on, that's enough exploring we should head back to the palace." He replied. "You said you wanted to meet Iris, right?"
Instantly Yuma brightened at the mention of the little Barian girl who was practically his best friend's daughter.
"Yeah! Do you think she'll be ok though? I mean she hasn’t exactly seen a human ever since she got here and plus I'm sure she's shy with strangers like Haruto was and."
Shark allowed Yuma to ramble, chuckling to himself his people were already made aware of this bright, hyperactive, and brave human who was close to their king and were just as curious about him as he was to them. And truly Shark couldn’t wait to introduce Yuma to the people he cared about as much as him.

Some fun findings in my Barian Emperor deep dive
Zexal cannot for the life of them decide if they want Dumon to be Greek, English, French, or Norse. The folklore taxonimist part of my brain finds this inordinately funny.
They want SO bad for Nasch's empire to be some Mycenaean/Classical Era kingdom, but totally bungles it by having Dumon be there. This is also inordinately funny to me.
Squinting our eyes a little and giving the series a lot of creative license, Alito seems to be the oldest of the Barian emperors, then a huge gap of a couple centuries, and then the death order would logically go Mizar, then Marin, Vector, Nasch, Dumon, and finally, Girag.
Mizar, in his past life, carried around, and presumably knew how to use, a sword. I had completely forgotten about this.

"You know, this blog is great and all, but it seems like something's missing..."
"Of course, I get here and the first person I see is you."
"Oh, perfect! Now I can keep my dear brother out of trouble."
"Who is keeping who out of trouble??"

You ever think about how the fact that Barians have an energy form (as seen with Vector and, albeit very briefly, Nasch) could imply that the reason why the Seven Emperors are able to speak despite having their physical forms having no mouths is because those are probably exoskeletons for the energy forms to reside in so they can interact with the physical realms in ways they cannot with just the aforementioned energy form?
I think about those barians a lot.
I actually wrote two pieces (First and Second) over the barian’s biology about 5 years ago with focus to the exoskeleton theory where their actual forms are the energy masses.
Now, those posts had a lot of heart and thought into them from me, but they were very much a Big Shitpost that I spent way too much time invested in. Haven’t read them in awhile so have zero clue on their quality or if they still hold up.
But within Zexal’s lore, the Astrals and Barians are considered “higher energy” species, so it’s likely that these—
—are typically what they look like. They simply take on a more tangible form. Also wanna point out that the Astrals can do this too, so it’s not an ability exclusive to the Barians.
It’s possible that both species take on a more tangible form to interact with the world in a way humans understand, but any body part is just for show rather than function. Most Astrals don’t have eyes, for one (or they have buggy, pupiless ones) but still see fine, and Barians can talk with or without mouths (Mr Heartland and Kurage).
Astral also has telepathy, which he used in one episode and never again, so it’s possible that Barians rely on the same method but en masse.
I do like your idea that the Astrals and Barians tether along the line of cosmic horror though, where the form that we see is nothing but an illusion that conjured to be visible and able to interact with humans. A Plato’s cave situation, if you will.
Barians are such wonderful animals, I wanna marry them all
