November 1976. The November calendar from the 1976 SUPER DC CALENDAR. (The main image, as the signatures indicate, is by Neal Adams and Dick Giordano.)
Tumblr media
I think all the birthdates were probably selected by DC editor Bob Rozakis. They popped up occasionally in stories and in responses in his "Ask the Answer Man" column in DC books of the '70s and early '80s. As for the vignettes in the calendar itself, I can identify some of them, but not all. (For instance, the Robin vignette looks like Irv Novick, while I think Martha Kent's is by George Papp.)

Vlads secretary recently quit in the middle of Vladco having a minor business expansion into Gotham and now he needs to hire a new one.
The bats are currently investigating one Vladimir Masters after he started to bring his business into Gotham. Theyā€™re very interested in the suspicious nature he acquired his wealth. Maybe itā€™s time to forge some resumes and bust out some old identities, Tim still has that blonde wig after all.

Zee'a birthday was first revealed in the 1976 DC Super Calendar.
Fun fact: Zatanna shares her birthday with her co creator Gardner Fox.
Here is the link to the full calendar with images that include some gorgeous artwork by Neal Adams
If you want a list with just the dates and any changes and inconsistencies, try here and here.
Have fun finding out if you share a birthday with a DC character or a significant DC event!
Tumblr media
The art in the calendar dates are clearly cut outs from the comics. In Zee's case, its from Detectice Comics #355 during her debut arc when she teamed up with Elongated Man to rescue her father. Art by Carmine Infantino.

Me, after doing 15 minutes of excessive googling on every Batfam member's birthday only to then realize I've accidentally missed the majority of them this year, and then also finding out that people are still aggressively debating over whether Bruce's birthday is April 7 or February 19, Dick's birthday happens 3-6x throughout the year, and Stephanie might have just popped into existence for all that DC cares:
Tumblr media
Batfam birthday dates btw for anyone who needs them are listed beneath the cut:
DISCLAIMER: DC is notorious for being super inconsistent with everything and I am a mere tadpole caught in the tidal wave of DC's ocean. This post will be regularly updated with edits and corrections so please do not use it as word of law, I am begging you.
Update (8/24/23): To keep things more simple and easier for everyone I am going to start categorizing the birth dates I've collected into 3 categories.
-Most popular: Self-explanatory. These are the birth dates that have been canonized and confirmed by DC and are also more wildly celebrated by the fandom. Typically, this should be the first result you see when you google the character's birthday. But not always because DC sucks ass.
-Other date(s): These are the additional birth dates I come across that have been canonized in some form with multiple sources, but are not as wildly celebrated or popularized by DC and/or the fandom. Why am I including them here? Mostly because I don't want people coming in saying I forgot a date. But also because if I have to see this mess, then y'all have too as well.
-Potential but unconfirmed date(s): This is where I will put all the other additional dates I find, but specifically those that are lacking in complete sources or seem to be highly debated and scrutinized.
Also fun emoji ranking guide for me and me alone:
šŸ‘‘šŸ‘‘: Queen Shit. Characters with a consistent and simple birth date(s). Can absolutely do no wrong.
šŸ‘‘šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø: In the Running. Characters who don't have a set birth date, but the mess is minor and completely DC's fault. They shouldn't have to be punished for DC's crimes.
šŸ¤”šŸ¤”: Gtfo. Shit is so inconsistent and stupidly messy that it's making me lose my shit. I'm putting DC and the characters on trial for this bullshit.
šŸ‘‘Alfred PennyworthšŸ‘‘
Most popular: August 16
Other date(s): April 8 and March 31
(I think it'd be hella cute if Jason and Alfred shared a bday. But if you keep scrolling through the rest of the list, you'll see that August is kind of an overcrowded bday month for the Batfam.
Depending on what you prefer, though, I still think Alfred's worth being celebrated. Lord knows he deserves a special day for himself)
(Update ((8/24/23)): No big inconsistencies between these dates. I just thought it would be fun to provide some info on why Alfred has two canonical birthdates.
So the reason August 16 is viewed as the most popular is for two main reasons. One, obviously, is that he shares a birth date with Jason Todd. So many fans latch onto this date because of how sweet it is for them to share a birthday together.
The second reason has to do with the origin of the birth date. This is because of the more recent retcon that was made by the prequel comic to the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game that was published in 2013. There is a panel in the comic that shows Alfred's birth certificate in full detail from his full name, his place of birth, etc.
Tumblr media
As for April 8, this specific date technically has more history compared to August 16. Fans will cite that April 8 was the official date selected by DC according to their Super DC Calendar back in 1976 (which btw was made in 1975).
Tumblr media
Compared to August 16 and April 8, however, March 31 oddly enough isn't that popular or recognized by DC or the majority of the fandom. The reason March 31 does come up is because March 31, 1943 was the date when Alfred made his first appearance in the comics, one day after Bruce/Batman)
šŸ¤”Bruce WaynešŸ¤”: Hey. Hey, DC, look at me. Bitch.
Most popular: February 19 or April 7
Other date(s): April 25, May 27, March 30, "October," October 7, and "November"
(It looks like most people go with February 19, but don't come at me if you're a April 7 truther. I'm just existing)
(Update ((8/20/23)): I'm gonna shoot somebody. So after doing a little bit more research, I came across-you'd never guess it-even more conflicting info on when Bruce's birthday is supposed to take place.
While April 7 and February 19 are still popular days for fans to celebrate Batman's bday, March 30 is also considered a popular date due to March 30, 1939 being the day Detective Comics #27 ((the issue Batman debuted in)) was put on shelves.
HOWEVER, even Batman's debut is contested to actually be May 27, 1939 because despite the fact that Detective Comics #27 first appeared to the public on March 30, 1939, the cover issue depicted May 27, 1939 instead.
Tumblr media
This is because it was a popular practice for comics publication houses to falsify their cover dates as a way to give the impression that the latest issue was newer than it actually was. So if you really, really wanna get super fucking technical about it ((and I know there are some of you out there who do)), Batman may have debuted on March 30, but the cover-issue date was May 27 so, yes, I guess Bruce could have been a May baby instead.
I hate it here.
Oh, and to make matters more complicated, let's discuss the issue of April 7 vs April 25. So the reason April 7 is a popular bday for Bruce is because the original 1930-40s run just outright stated that April 7 was his birthday. Simple enough.
So what does April 25 have to do with this? Well, that's because technically-I think I hate that word now btw-Batman didn't get his own solo comic until April 25, 1940. If you want to go by April 25 because of this logic, however, that means that you'd have to share Bruce's birthday with the Joker. Because guess what? That's also the exact date that the Joker debuted.
I'm personally not a huge fan of Bruce and the Joker sharing a bday. Mostly just because the dates are clearly already complicated enough. But also I feel like April 25 is just known as the Joker's bday at this point, at least in the DC fandom. And Bruce has so many options at this point that it'd be kinda silly to make them share a bday.
As for the "sometime in October" and "sometime in November" additions, we have Batman The Animated Series and Frank Miller's "Batman: Year One" to thank for those extremely vague options.
BTAS Bruce states that his birthday is "sometime in October" and "Batman: Year One" Bruce is responsible for "sometime in November." I repeat: I hate it here.
So when is Bruce's actual birthday? Well, the latest change that DC has "officially" made was the February 19 retcon during the 1970-80s. When a fan sent a question into Detective Comics about Bruce's birthday, the answer given was "February 19" in the letter column. Issue #494, to be exact.
And the reason this answer was given? Because the Super DC Calender for 1976 (again made in 1975) said so.
Tumblr media
However, there are still people who prefer to celebrate his bday on April 7 or March 30 instead. And there's also a question floating around if the New 52 run could potentially retcon Bruce's bday AGAIN at some point in the future.
I. Hate. It. Here.
Personally, I liked February 19 because then Alfred could maybe have the month of April to himself. But after seeing all this new info, I'm just sort of resigned to whichever date that the fandom prefers. Y'all can decide. I don't have any energy left.
Also, I can't believe I have to accuse Bruce of having possibly taught Dick his bday scam. Just .... wow).
(Update ((8/24/23)): Well, DC did it to me again. I found this extra little tidbit while googling the Super DC Calendar for Alfred, actually.
So Issue #10 of the 2021 Legends of the Dark Knight decided to give the BTAS's "sometime in October" an actual sometime.
Tumblr media
How do I feel about yet another Bruce Wayne bday retcon? Honestly, I think I'm moving closer and closer to just a bland state of acceptance at this point. Tbh, I don't think all these retcons actually matter that much in the end. DC is gonna keep being DC.
Which is annoying. But Idk I'm personally gonna stick with February 19. No shade to you if you prefer any of the other dates. I just like February 19 more than the others)
šŸ‘‘Kate KanešŸ‘‘
Most popular: March 21
Other date(s): January 26
(So ... where to start to with this one?
Well the official DC canon birth date for Kate Kane is listed as March 21. That being said, if you were to google Kate's birthday right now, you might be confused because that's not the first result that comes up.
Instead, you'll be greeted with January 26, 1990.
So what gives? If there's already an official DC approved birth date, then why the fuck is January 26 coming up all of a sudden?
Well, folks, you have the CW's Batwoman to thank.
Tumblr media
Tbh I was very confused as to how I completely missed that there was an entire Batwoman TV show in the first place.
Apparently the show is considered a part of the CW Arrowverse (in reference to the CW show Arrow featuring Oliver Queen, for those of you who need extra info) and ran for 3 whole seasons before being cancelled on April 9, 2022.
And they gave us actual canon lesbian Kate Kane rep. I mean, she is a lesbian. But yeah. CW actually acknowledged her sexual orientation. So kudos for doing the bare minimum?????
Anyway, I guess the showrunners just decided they wanted Kate's birthday to be on January 26 instead of March 21??? Idk if this was supposed to be a reference or an homage to Cassandra Cain's birthday. I doubt it, but who knows?)
šŸ¤”Dick GraysonšŸ¤”: Greedy bitch who keeps lying about his birthday so he can scam people into giving him more presents jk jk
Most popular: "On the first day of spring" (bruh) or March 20/21
Other date(s): March 6, "April," October 24 (aka "the week before Halloween"), November 11 and December 1
Potential but unconfirmed date(s): June 24
(Dick's canon bday seems to be influx. March 6, March 20, March 21, November 11, June 24, December 1, and so on. I did see multiple sources state Dick was born "on the first day of spring." I'm unclear atm about whether this is a fanon take or if it was actually stated in a particular comic at some point.
As far as I'm concerned, Dick just keeps lying about his birthday for the lols)
(Update ((8/24/23)): Well, guess what I found, folks?
Tumblr media
It's a return visit from our favorite friend, the Super DC Calendar of 1976. And according to it, Dick's birthday should be November 11.
You can also thank the Young Justice comic for the confusion surrounding Dick's bday being on December 1.
Tumblr media
Also, I found this post by @theflyingwonder that helps clear up a LOT of the mess surrounding Dick's ever changing birth date. Honestly, amazing work and extra kudos to them for putting all the work in and finding all the sources. I just wished I had found their post earlier, holy shit.
And if you have some extra time, please give some love to @inkydandy for their hilarious and very sweet comic about all the confusion that comes with Dick's bday)
(Update ((8/25/23)): Many thanks to @poisoned-ivy for clearing up even more of the mess surrounding Dick's bday. I went ahead and took a screenshot of their response to my old "Which date is Dick's canon bday?" poll.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They also provided a link to the DC Universe Calendar which was lovingly compiled from the original 1976 Super DC Calendar and then put together by the people who run the Five Earths Project .
Also found out from them today that October 24 is one of Dick's bdays ((at least for Post-Crisis Dick Grayson)). So that was a fun new discovery!
They were also very helpful in helping me realize that the original article I had found that stated "sometime in April" was actually in reference to Dick Grayson's first appearance in the comics, which was April 1940.
Tumblr media
So, yes, "sometime in April" is technically--again I hate this word so much now--still a valid candidate for Dick's bday. And before you ask: Detective Comics #38 was actually published on March 6, 1940.
Hence why people will cite March 6 as Dick's canon bday instead.
This project got a lot bigger than I ever expected it to ... god)
šŸ‘‘Barbara GordonšŸ‘‘: September 23
šŸ‘‘Jason ToddšŸ‘‘: August 16
šŸ‘‘Cassandra CainšŸ‘‘: January 26
šŸ‘‘Tim DrakešŸ‘‘: July 19
šŸ‘‘Stephanie BrownšŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø: She emerged from the void with the sole purpose of dragging Bruce's ass to hell and back. Nothing can stop her. We all exist in her world now.
Potential but unconfirmed date(s): June 23, "August," or August 11
(For real, though, some peeps will say June 23 since the month she officially debuted in the comics was June 1992.
But I've also seen August 1992 listed as her bday month as well--lot of August babies in the Batfam, huh--but I haven't found June 23 specifically listed as her canon bday, either. It honestly feels like the fans are putting in more work than DC at this point. Which, like, I'm not surprised. Just disappointed)
(Update ((8/24/23)): Someone mentioned August 11 as a potential birth date, but I have yet to see an actual source that specifically states this. If I do find one, I'll edit this section. Figured I should put it here just in case, though)
šŸ‘‘Duke ThomasšŸ‘‘: August 13
šŸ‘‘Damian WaynešŸ‘‘: August 9
šŸ‘‘Terry McGinnisšŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø
Most popular: August 18
Other date(s): June 27 or August 10
Potential but unconfirmed date(s): September 19 (fml)
(Yes, I'm including Terry, fuck you lol
Also SERIOUSLY WTF is up with so many of these August birthdays!!!! Fuck, was everyone just getting crazy BUSY in November!!!! What's going on in the DC universe that is making November of all months the HORNY MONTH????!!!!)
(Mini update ((8/18/23)): Well, I just found out that apparently June 27th 2023 is also a highly debated birth date for Terry. As is August 10 2023/2024 and August 18 2023/2024. I even saw a mention of September 19 2023, but I don't know how credible that source actually is. I'm just putting it here because I'm losing my mind and I don't want someone to pop in and say I forgot it omfg I'm dying
I'm just ... why? Why is it so hard to just commit to one month and one date. I'm not even concerned about the exact year. Just commit to ONE, man.
Excuse me while I march over to DC HQ and burn the whole place to the ground iswtfg)
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on any of these. I have a massive headache now and am open to any suggestions or clarifications y'all have to offer.
Also, I'm going to fist fight Dick in a Denny's parking lot.
Update (8/17/23): So a mini post that I meant to use as a way to vent how insane Dick was making me somehow blew up way more than I ever expected it to, and now I feel obligated to clarify again that I am open to any corrections and additional info that anyone has to offer.
I'm saying this because I've noticed people reblogging this post for actual Batfam bday references and someone already pointed out I fucked up Tim's bday and now I feel bad for everyone who reblogged this post prior to that edit.
It's probably just the anxiety talking, but yeah I just wanted to put that out there.
Also justice for Stephanie Brown! She deserves to have her own special day and if I have to bully DC into giving her a canon birthday, then you bet your ass I fucking will.
(And to all of y'all who are encouraging Dick to keep running his side scam business, I just have this to say: There's an empty Denny's parking lot somewhere out there just waiting for you, too lol)

saw a couple posts about today (Aug 9th) being Damian Wayne's birthday, but when I looked for a source I couldn't find one for the life of me. which of course sent me down a rabbit hole of batfam birthdays. so.
Official Birthdays
Tumblr media
*official as in they appear in canon and seem to be the most popular amongst fans. a bunch of these knuckleheads have multiple birthdays.
Cassandra Cain was born on January 26th according to Batgirl (2000) #33, though in that same issue she celebrates it some time in June because fuck her dad.
Bruce Wayne was born of February 19th according to the Detective Comics #494 fan letters column. Or April 7th, if you're looking at Star Spangled Comics #91 (Golden Age), or October 7th in Legends of the Dark Knight (2021) #10. Feb 19th seems to be the one that's used most often.
Dick Grayson was born on "the first day of spring" (aka March 20th) according to Robin (1993) Annual #4, or November 11th according to the Super DC Calendar of 1976, or a week-ish before Halloween according to Secret Origins (1986) #50, or December 1st according to Young Justice (2011) #20. March 20th fits into the robin origin story though, so we're gonna go with that.
Alfred Pennyworth was born on April 8th according to the Super DC Calendar of 1976, or August 16th according to Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Five #26 (side note: double colons in titles should be illegal). Neither of these are anywhere near real canon, but Injustice is supplementary material for a fighting game, and I'm always more inclined to go with a pure comics source. Plus this way he and Jason don't have to share.
Tim Drake was born on July 19th according to Robin (1993) #116. He's only got the one birthday and in that issue he totally forgot about it.
Jason Todd was born on August 16th according to Detective Comics #790. No information on when exactly his rebirth day is.
Barbara Gordon was born on September 23rd according to the Super DC Calendar of 1976. That's the only source we've got so that's what we're gonna use.
Unofficial Birthdays
Stephanie Brown, Duke Thomas, and Damian Wayne have never had their birthdays stated in canon, so most people have assigned them birthdays based on either their debut date (Duke) or some other criteria that is a mystery to me. Those dates (from what I have gathered) respectively are:
Steph: August 11th, Duke: August 13th, Damian: August 9th
Tumblr media
WHY ARE THEY ALL AUGUST??? THAT'S 4 (or 5 if you count Alfred) BIRTHDAYS IN THE SPAN OF A WEEK! WHY DO THEY ALL HAVE TO BE LEOS???
anyway that's the fruits of my afternoon/evening. if anyone has corrections with sources or dc canonizes a birthday in a comic I'm not reading (which is most of them, my comics taste is stuck in the 90s/early 2000s), let me know.

Batman: The Animated Series - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
Happy Birthday Batman
An official DC Comics calendar published for 1976 identified February 19th as Bruce Wayneā€™s birthday.Ā  Other dates have been mentioned in the comics as possibly being the Batmanā€™s birthday yet the nineteenth of February still seems the most canonically recognized.Ā  Really, a Pisces? Ā
In any case, to celebrate the Dark Knightā€™s birthday here are paper cut-outs of Batman in all his various animated forms.Ā  Who knew there were so many?
The Adventures Of Batman was the first Batman cartoon series and ran from 1968 to 1969.Ā  It stared Olan Soule in the role of Batman with a young Casey Kasem in the role of Robin.Ā
Tumblr media
The SuperFriends brought Batman together with the worldā€™s greatest heroes and ran from 1973 all the way to 1986.Ā  Soul and Kasem both reprised their roles as Batman and Robin in the series.
Tumblr media
The New Adventures of Batman ran for a single season in 1977 featuring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin.Ā  This was a particularly silly show and featured a great deal of a magical imp known as Bat-Mite. Ā
Tumblr media
1992 saw the advent of the greatest cartoon of all time as Batman: The Animated Series debuted and ran through to 1995.Ā  The great Kevin Conroy provided the voice for Batman.
Tumblr media
The New Batman Adventures was a continuation of Batman: The Animated Series with some updated stylistic changes.Ā  It ran from 1997 to 1999, featuring Conroy as Batman. Ā
Tumblr media
Batman Beyond entailed a Gotham City of the future where an aged Bruce Wayne trains a young man on his path to filling the mantle of The Batman.Ā  It ran from 1999 to 2001 and stared Kevin Conroy as Bruce Wayne and Will Friedle as his protĆ©gĆ©, Terry McGinnis.
Tumblr media
Justice League brought the Superfriends back together this time under the banner of The Justice League (and later Justice League Unlimited).Ā  It ran from 2001 to 2006 and once more featured Kevin Conroy in the role of Batman.
Tumblr media
The Batman, which ran from 2004 to 2008, departed from the continuity established in Batman: The Animated Series and presented a new version of the Caped Crusader and his various allies and adversaries.Ā  It starred Rino Romano in the role of Batman with Evan Sabara and Danielle Judovits as Robin and Batgirl. Ā  Ā
Tumblr media
Echoing the campiness of 1966, Batman: The Brave and The Bold was a fun, light-hearted anthology series that ran from 2004 to 2008.Ā  Each episode saw Batman teaming up with different heroes of the DC Universe for madcap adventures.Ā  Diedrich Bader stared as Batman.
Tumblr media
The series Young Justice, which ran non-concurrently from 2010 to 2022, focused primarily on Robin and the other younger heroes as they made their way from being sidekicks to a team in the own right.Ā  Batman featured in many of the episodes where he was voiced by Bruce Greenwood. Ā
Tumblr media
Beware the Batman from for a single season in 2013.Ā  Anthony Ruivivar voiced Batman in this dark, largely computer animated series. Ā
Tumblr media
Batman Unlimited ran from 2015 to 2016.Ā  This was primarily a commercial in animated form featuring short, action-packed stories in tandem with the release of action figures and toy vehicles.Ā  Roger Craig Smith provided the voice for Batman.Ā
Tumblr media
Justice League Action brought back the League for more light-hearted adventures with a star-studded cast.Ā  It ran from 2016 to 2018 with Kevin Conroy returning to once again voice Batman. Ā
Tumblr media
Batman appeared as a periodic guest star in the DC Super Hero Girls series, which ran from 2019 to 2022.Ā  Herein Batman spoke in a barely audible growl that only the other characters could comprehend.Ā  Whereas actor Keith Ferguson provided the voice for Bruce Wayne, who further hid his secret identity as the the Caped Crusader by featuring in the ridiculous reality TV show, ā€˜Making it Wayne.ā€™
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A lampooned version of the Dark Knight sporadically features in the zany Harley Quinn animated series, premiering in 2019.Ā  Ā Diedrich Bader reprises his role from Batman: The Brave and The Bold, voicing this decidedly goofier version of the Dark Knight.
Tumblr media
And finally, hopefully debuting some time soon, Batman: The Caped Crusader acts as a spiritual successor to Batman: The Animated Series and features the final acting role of the late, great Kevin Conroy, reprising Batman one last time. Ā

It is such a funny concept to me of Dc heroes out of drag or whatever (civilian form? Whatever).
Like, Clark very passionately explaining to one of his co-workers the importance of proper farm management because theyā€™re doing a cover story on some farm in metropolis. Or like, cracking dad jokes because those really are genuinely funny to him. Calling his morning coffee a ā€œcup of joeā€.
Bruce attempting to explain to his many children what the stock market is (they are listening but barely) and Bruce having to draw out a rough graph using printer paper and one of Damianā€™s crayons because thatā€™s what was closest. Very excitedly showing up to every dance recital/concert/school play because *those are his kids* and he loves them goddamnit.
Green lantern trying to show said batkids how to master archery and/or training with Bruce in the Wayne manor gym and he keeps making terrible puns he gets from those ā€œa pun a dayā€ calendars (Bruce pretends to hate it but truthfully finds it mildly amusing. Ollie doesnā€™t have to know that though.)
The various supers and sidekicks trying to have a very normal bbq or game night and to them it *is* normal but to literally anybody else it would look like a bunch of billionaires, a news reporter and like 20 kids + in somebodies backyard???
Like those are actual humans behind the mask and it makes me giggle to think of them doing normal people things because it seems soā€¦ strange to think about Bruce having Sunday breakfast with his family or Clark watching a football game with the same excitement of your average suburban dad (aka going crazy at every touchdown to the point neighbors can probably hear you) or whatever.

Today is all about @oh-stars! In today's Mod Spotlight, we're highlighting Jo and all they bring to this space!!
Jo created this space back in December and handles most of our regular fic recs and scheduling Fic Fridays! As well as making graphics, scheduling the event announcements and calendar, Jo steps in to help where she's needed!
Jo (she/they) has been a fic writer for over ten years, and a mod for seven years. Over the years, sheā€™s written for other fandoms, such as Marvel, but now primarily focuses on Stranger Things ā€” specifically Steddie. She mods the Stranger Things Reverse Big Bang, the Steve Harrington Big Bang, the Eddie Munson Big Bang, and created Steddie Underdog Fics back in December.
As a part of our mod spotlight, Jo answered some questions from you all and our team! You can read them below.
Be sure to stay tuned for more recs and future mod spotlights in the future!
What drew you to Steddie?
Truthfully, I couldnā€™t tell you. Iā€™m a Steve girlie through and through, have been for years, but itā€™s something about his dynamic with Eddie that just clicked. Itā€™s the same way I feel about all my major ships over the years. To me, and this isnā€™t a fresh take by any means cause I know Iā€™ve seen others make the name connection, but Steddie has the same energy as Stucky from Marvel, Buddie from 9-1-1, and Superbat from DC, which are the other three big ships Iā€™ve consistently the past few years. Iā€™m a multishipper, can really see the beauty in other ships and dynamics for any of my fandom characters, but thereā€™s something special about Steddie that I just donā€™t have the words for.
What is your favorite thing about modding this page?
This is so cheesy, but the community! I adore how everyone supports one another and discovering fics and authors Iā€™ve never come across outside of the bubble Iā€™ve found myself in. Itā€™s such a joy being able to uplift authors and share their fics, it trumps all the headaches that can come with modding a page.
What are your favorite tropes to read?
Iā€™m a sucker for kid fics, secret relationships, and hurt/comfort ā€“ especially heavy angst with happy endings.
Whatā€™s your guilty pleasure trope?
Omegaverse is the safe answer, lol, but probably darker fics? Angstier fics that I have to be super careful with the tags or else I canā€™t read lol. Itā€™s not something I engage with all the time, but every now and then I go down the Major Character Death tags.
What is your preferred way to read and find fics?
I go through the tags very methodically, especially for a new fandom. With Steddie, it was a bit different since itā€™s the first time Iā€™ve been around for the start of a ship ā€“ or at least paying attention to the ship as itā€™s forming. So usually Iā€™ll either sort by date updated or word counts, then go through the tag Iā€™m wanting page by page and read back to back. And if I make it through a whole tag, thats when I go to recs to see if I can find something to spark my interest for a new tag. Or for a tag Iā€™d never really read on my own.
What makes a fic an instant yes for you to read?
Word count is a big one, the longer the better, especially if you add in a slow burn tag with a six digit wc. Otherwise, itā€™s a combination of things like a high word count, mix of slow burn, misunderstandings, happy endings tags, and it being completed, Iā€™ll rarely hesitate.
Anonymous - Is there any older or lesser-known Steddie event from the past few years that you particularly love (if ongoing or recurring) or loved? Did you participate in any?
I really enjoyed the community over at @steddieholidayexchange (and the summer one). Iā€™ve participated in many events over the years, from Steddie BB 2023 and a few other exchanges to ones Iā€™ve modded like the Stranger Things Reverse BB, but that community was special.
@sidekick-hero - What makes a fanfic stand out for you?
How well rounded it is! With fanfic, I donā€™t want it to just focus on moving the plot forward all the time. Take the scenic route and let the characters breathe as they explore a number of side quests and plots as we navigate the main plot. Give me good dialogue, prose, interesting twists or interactions, and good character moments and Iā€™ll be happy.
@worldswcollide - What advice would you give to someone who is interested in becoming a mod in the future?
Organization is everything and take notes!! Staying consistent with your organization and keeping records of everything will really help keep everything running smoothly. For events like big bangs and reverse big bangs that happen annually or semi-annually, itā€™s really important to keep a list of what works and doesnā€™t to improve the next run. Listen to feedback from your participants and see what you can adapt to make it work. Not all feedback has to be followed, but itā€™s good to try and see how you can improve your event or space. Thatā€™s where the records and notes will also come into play so you donā€™t have to start from scratch on the next one and you can back up what is working with evidence if you need to defend it within the team. Otherwise, just have fun. Donā€™t take it too seriously. Modding fan pages and events is volunteer work and meant to be fun, so if it isnā€™t anymore, donā€™t let it suck the joy out of fandom for you!
Anonymous - Do you participate in any other fannish activities, like making playlists, gif edits, fanart, podcasts, Pinterest boards, etc?
Iā€™ve definitely dabbled in a lot ā€“ playlists, fan edits, fan art, animations, book binding, etc ā€“ but none that stick around as much as writing. I spend so much time modding I donā€™t really have the time to do more outside of it.
@sidekick-hero - What motivates you to mod for steddieunderdogfics?
My team and the continued support we get from our loyal supporters! We see the same names reblogging the call to action posts and engaging with the posts, so itā€™s really encouraging to see that our work has an impact in the fandom!
@worldswcollide - Ā Are there skills youā€™ve learned as a mod that have helped you in your everyday life?
I have literally used my modding experience in job interviews. I frame it as event planning and management, with an emphasis on customer service and organization and usually thatā€™s a great talking point for interviews. That being said, itā€™s really broadened my spreadsheet abilities and organization and I view teamwork in a different way now. As a burnt out gifted kid who took on the brunt of team projects in school, letting people take over work has always been tough so having a trusted team that shows me I can hand things over, its really refreshing. And now Iā€™ve been able to do the same at work!
Anonymous - Have you had a particular favorite Challenge Monday or weekend theme so far (maybe because of the theme, the recs, or the engagement, or for some other reason)?
Okay so a little BTS, but we totally have handpicked some themes for each mod. For my birthday back, we did kid fics for that theme weekend since it fell on that Sunday since it was my favorite trope ā€“ and the same has been extended for the other modsā€™ birthdays. Outside of that, I really like the ones that I donā€™t expect to get a lot of submissions. And the comment ones, since we try to encourage those submitting the recs to also leave a comment.
@sidekick-hero - What do you like best about fandom?
Iā€™ve said it a few times already, but community. I donā€™t have the biggest community outside of fandom, so itā€™s always touching to see how amazing and supportive everyone has been. Social stuff is tough for me, but no matter where I look in fandom spaces, thereā€™s always someone willing to be patient and kind. Itā€™s really changed my life, introducing me to some of the most incredible, impactful people Iā€™ve ever met like @karadanverss, @sparkstar-trash, and @lady-lostmind -- and so many others. No matter how cringe or whatever opinions people have about fandom, Iā€™ll never be shy about my experiences in fandom and with fanfic because of the people Iā€™ve met over the years.
@worldswcollide - If you absolutely HAD to chooseā€”enemies to lovers or friends to lovers? (At least when it comes to Steddie)
This is actually super easy to me, but friends to lovers all the way. I prefer that over enemies to lovers anyway, because thatā€™s a really tough trope for me, but thereā€™s something special about friends to lovers. I love how sweet and gentle it is, especially on a longer slow burn as things trickle into place in a way that just feels right because itā€™s meant to be. Enemies to lovers, though, is tricky. Rivals are always fun, but actual enemies is a hard line to toe. For me, I feel like the reason theyā€™re enemies is either too light to be true enemies or too heavy that itā€™s kind of impossible to realistically get past. I like writing both, but I think in the end, I prefer friends to lovers.
Anonymous - Have you seen any interesting or fascinating trends in the ST or Steddie fandom that you'd like to talk about?
For ST and Steddie specifically, no. I think itā€™s really fun to see how the fandom shifts as a wave. Like post S4 drop, we were all about the fix-its and canon fics, time loops were massive and the kas theory was really hitting after the last two eps. Then I feel like weā€™re constantly going in and out of tropes as a whole, while the staples are always constant. But all of that is pretty standard across any fandom so itā€™s hard to really pinpoint.
@sidekick-hero - What made you create Steddie Underdog Fics?
Steddie Big Bang 2023. That was a monster of a bang and between how big it ended up being as well as the nature of how Steddie exploded, I felt a little helpless. I was super lucky to have gotten a lot of attention on one of my fics, but I really attribute that to timing, length, and how quickly I got it written. Do I think it deserves how much love and attention it got? No, there are so many other amazing works that feature new ideas and concepts, with interesting takes on canon or the characters, that should have just as much attention as that fic received. But the bigger the ship got, the easier it was for fics to slip under the radar. Iā€™m still very lucky to have dedicated readers on my works, but at the time, I was really struggling with my Steddie BB fic. I was struggling with some negativity on it and seeing other authors worry about their own fics because they werenā€™t getting feedback, then one thing led to another and I was creating the blog before I could really process it.
Anonymous - Have you seen a rec method like it in other places before or was there just a general desire to help highlight things lost in the large growth of the Steddie fandom?
@steddieficfindā€™s format of crowdsourcing helped shape how I wanted to go about this space. At the time, while I was reading a lot, most of the fics I was reading were ongoing updates or from the same few authors, and a lot were oneshots. So I would go on rec lists and @steddieficfindto find new fics that I may have missed when going through my usual tags, because summaries arenā€™t always accurate. I know I struggle with my own ficsā€™ summaries, but seeing how a reader sees a fic versus the author can really help bring in new perspectives. Thinking about that, I decided that having other people share their recs and highlight fics in a new light other than the authorā€™s summary could be an interesting take on the rec space.
@sidekick-hero - Do you look for different things in fanfic when you're reading it than when you're writing it?
Oh yes, Iā€™m way more critical about my own fic than the ones Iā€™m reading. With my work, Iā€™m trying to get to a destination while my reading choices are about the journey. I just want to enjoy the fic and see what happens, Iā€™m not criticizing word choice or looking at the craft as a whole. Sometimes its hard to shut that off, but I really try to separate the two.
@worldswcollide - How did you transition from writing fic to taking on such big projects?
Iā€™m a bit of a workaholic when it comes to fandom stuff. Iā€™ll do the bare minimum in my jobs (because theyā€™re super low stakes, letā€™s be real) so I can devote a lot of energy to writing and modding my events and this page. That being said, I usually hyper focus on the newest project for a minute before I take a more balanced approach. It helps having teams that can support me, especially with ongoing projects like this one. There were so many times where I nearly deleted this space because it got too overwhelming on my own, even as I added more and more to it. I couldnā€™t be doing this without @spicysix and @verdantcactus. Theyā€™re willingness to help, earnest interest, and brilliant ideas on how we can work the space has been a game changer. I canā€™t thank them enough for taking on this project with me, for continuing to absolutely nail it week after week. So thank you both so very much!!
Anonymous - What is it about Bang events that draws you in, especially as a mod?
Itā€™s addicting. Genuinely. Iā€™ve been doing them for seven years now across a handful of fandoms. Modding is just so fun for me, it helps me engage more with new people in ways Iā€™m too intimidated to try as just a participant. And again, the community is really nice within events, especially with everyone cheering each other on as we hit milestones and deadlines. I really appreciate that support and getting the opportunity to support others to try new things.
@sidekick-hero - What's the best feedback you've ever gotten (could be about your writing or being a mod)?
This is really tough! Itā€™s one of two, both were from my favorite writing professor. Itā€™s more advice than feedback about my work specifically, but itā€™s something Iā€™m constantly thinking about, especially now when Iā€™m a bit stuck writing wise as a whole. The first is that writing is a muscle, not a talent. You can always improve and get better the more you practice, but in the same vein that itā€™s harder to lift 50lbs when you donā€™t lift that much all the time, you can lose it too. Writing a little bit each day, even if it's a sentence or two at a time, will be better than letting it rest, because you canā€™t edit a blank page. And as long as youā€™re thinking about the story, playing around with what youā€™ll do next, what worked in a past scene or you want to change in another, that counts too. Itā€™s still writing even if youā€™re not getting actual words down. The second is that if youā€™re blocked, look up the page. The answer is almost always two or three paragraphs before you stopped, or in bigger works, sections ahead. Finding the problem may be harder than expected, but itā€™s always there.
Today, all of our recs are from @oh-stars specifically! You can always see their recs on our Fic Fridays by checking our #mod stars rec tag.
