Juno in "Abandoned"
My Writing Masterpost
Juno Collection Masterpost
Warnings: slavery, implied past noncon, ableism
Master was growing tired of him. He could tell.
Master didn’t hit him as much. Didn’t call him to sleep at the foot of his bed. Didn’t show him off to his friends on Saturday nights. Didn’t make him do tricks like before.
He couldn’t understand it.
Juno did everything right. He was good. He was obedient. He didn’t resist when Master strung him up and beat him until he couldn’t scream any more. He spread his legs on command and let it happen. He begged properly for scraps like a good boy.
By all measures, he was good.
So why didn’t Master love him anymore?
Juno threw himself into being extra good. He made Master’s favorite meals everyday. Baked him sweets upon sweets, made sure his chores were done earlier and earlier. He tried his best to be perfect.
But none of it, not a thing, got his Master’s attention.
What was he doing wrong?
___________________
“Juno-” Master snapped his fingers- “Come.”
Juno came, as quick and light-footed as he could. Master had finally called for him! It must be good.
In Master’s hand was the leash, and Juno was confused, but obeyed when it was clipped to his collar.
He quietly followed Master outside and onto the streets. It was a cool morning, and his socks didn’t quite help his feet stay warm from the cold cobblestone.
His confused excitement vanished when they rounded the corner and he saw where they were going.
No, please! He wanted to beg. I’ve been good!
But Master had beaten words out of him a long time ago. He couldn’t make them anymore.
Master undid his collar, and he felt the loss so keenly he nearly felt like crying.
Master exchanged money with the slaver, a pitiful amount, and Master was no longer his Master.
They took his clothes away and bathed him in cold water and soap. His hair was brushed out and dried. He was given loose pants and a shirt, but they weren’t his from home.
He didn’t have a home. He was ownerless.
It wasn’t until they started clipping his nails and filing them round that he started to cry.
They chained him down, at the end of the display, and all there was nothing to do but wait.
And wait.
And wait.
___________________
The other slaves sold faster than him.
All of them did.
Multiple rounds of all new faces passed him by, all going to homes with a master, and he was left behind.
“Stupid,” they called him. “Can’t even talk.”
I’m not stupid, he wanted to say. I can do lots of things!
But his hair grew longer and longer, and his price was lower and lower.
Juno wrapped his arms around himself, shivering. It wasn’t even cold out, but he felt cold.
He was unwanted.
He watched the dogs following their owners on walks; poodles and labradors and shepherds.
Juno was jealous.
He was made to serve and be useful, and so were dogs, but dogs got to be pets.
Juno wasn’t even worth being a slave.
He wept, and waited.
And waited.
And waited.

I'm a cryptid in Stardew valley. I live on the outskirts of town. I disappear for days on end, purchasing daily one-way tickets to the calico desert. Nobody knows where I go while I'm there. Can occasionally be found fishing at random spots throughout town. I am never not running on at least one triple shot espresso. I take the abandoned minecarts to get around and am frequently seen disappearing into the sewers. I carry a sword for some reason. Once every week or two I will stride into your bedroom to deliver you your favorite meal. I'm a self-made millionaire. I attend all the town events and will go to your concert in the next town over. I have donated approximately 2583 items to the local museum and singlehandedly revitalized the town community center. There are rumors I can talk to junimos. I'm friends with the local wizard

For many of years I had this tradition of drawing Wirt and the beast once a year to see how much I have improved, then depression hit in 2023 and couldn't continue, but it left so really amazing art in the process

As a reminder that good exists out there, a coworker recently confessed to me that he found out his child is questioning their identity (kid's gender redacted for this post). The kid is keeping it from him, so he can't say anything to them or show that he knows, but he's doing his best to get mentally prepared and educated so that he'll be ready whenever his kid does feel comfortable enough come to him.
For context, this guy is a big, bulky middle aged dude who loves sports and typical outdoor "manly" activities. As his coworker and friend, I know he's a kind and sweet teddy bear of a person, but his kid probably views him as a stern, authoritarian figure, the way most teenagers view their parents. His family lives in a conservative area, so I'm sure between that, their dad's looks and interests, and the fact that their dad is a Figure of Authority, the kid is worried that they won't be accepted.
But you know what? When he found out about his kid, the first thing he did was reach out to his closest queer friend and ask for resources for parents of questioning children. His biggest fears are that his kid will be bullied or discriminated against and won't feel comfortable enough to be themself. His second action was to find himself a mentor in another parent who went the same situation (kid coming out in a conservative town). The other person is preparing him for some of the struggles his kid may face and the fights he may need to take on as a parent to make sure his kid is safe and treated well.
Something I want to emphasize for people focused on language as the primary method of allyship is that when we spoke, he used some outdated terms and thoughts about gender and sexuality. That does not make him bad. These were the terms and thinking used about questioning teenagers when he was growing up and he never needed to learn more current ones. But now that he does have that need, he's throwing himself in head first because that's his kid and he's darn well going to make sure that his kid feels welcomed and has a safe place to be themselves even if they never come out to him.

changes and trends in horror-genre films are linked to the anxieties of the culture in its time and place. Vampires are the manifestation of grappling with sexuality; aliens, of foreign influence. Horror from the Cold War is about apathy and annihilation; classic Japanese horror is characterised by “nature’s revenge”; psychological horror plays with anxieties that absorbed its audience, like pregnancy/abortion, mental illness, femininity. Some horror presses on the bruise of being trapped in a situation with upsetting tasks to complete, especially ones that compromise you as a person - reflecting the horrors and anxieties of capitalism etc etc etc. Cosmic horror is slightly out of fashion because our culture is more comfortable with, even wistful for, “the unknown.” Monster horror now has to be aware of itself, as a contingent of people now live in the freedom and comfort of saying “I would willingly, gladly, even preferentially fuck that monster.” But I don’t know much about films or genres: that ground has been covered by cleverer people.
I don’t actually like horror or movies. What interests me at the moment is how horror of the 2020s has an element of perception and paying attention.
Multiple movies in one year discussed monsters that killed you if you perceived them. There are monsters you can’t look at; monsters that kill you instantly if you get their attention. Monsters where you have to be silent, look down, hold still: pray that they pass over you. M Zombies have changed from a hand-waved virus that covers extras in splashy gore, to insidious spores. A disaster film is called Don’t Look Up, a horror film is called Nope. Even trashy nun horror sets up strange premises of keeping your eyes fixed on something as the devil GETS you.
No idea if this is anything. (I haven’t seen any of these things because, unfortunately, I hate them.) Someone who understands better than me could say something clever here, and I hope they do.
But the thing I’m thinking about is what this will look like to the future, as the Victorian sex vampires and Cold War anxieties look to us. I think they’ll have a little sympathy, but they probably won’t. You poor little prey animals, the kids will say, you were awfully afraid of facing up to things, weren’t you?

Chappell Roan, a lesbian, went on a national broadcast tonight and performed a song about dating a closeted woman who refuses to acknowledge their relationship and denies the fact that she’s a lesbian. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that happening but here we are and it’s amazing.
As a lesbian woman, to have an artist go out and be so entirely herself in every way, to be so proud of her own sexuality and to perform a song like this and have it be broadcasted to millions of people…it makes me so emotional. All I have ever wanted as a queer woman is to have this sort of unabashed representation and we’re finally getting it in such an incredible way. What an era we are living in and all I can say is long may it continue and I am so proud to be a Chappell Roan fan.
