Protest dnes na Dolnej Bráne a na Hlavnej v Košiciach. Bolo tam veľa dobrých rečníkou hlavne jedná pani učiteľka Eva Wolfová, ktorej slova vo mne veľmi rezonovali.
Priďťe, choďťe, stále protestujte.
Protest today at Dolna Brána and down Hlavna in Kosice. There were lots of great speakers especially a teacher Eva Wolfová, who's words resonated in me greatly.
Come, keep going, keep protesting.

TLDR:
Croatia denies accusations that they are behind the anti-government protests in Serbia made by Serbia's pro-russian government.
Czech Republic denies accusations that they are behind the anti-government protests in Slovakia made by Slovakia's pro-russian government.

Viem, že toto nie je môj bežný príspevok a taktiež, že tento blog nečíta veľa Slovákov, ale týmto by som sa chcela poďakovať všetkým, ktorí sa zúčastnili dnešných protestov.

I am sure sending over 3000 doctors to prison for refusing to not quit their jobs, or alternatively, forcing them to work against their will, is totally not gonna cause us problems in the long run

(Michal Šimečka on instagram)
“It would be appropriate, if at least one of us spoke soberly today, without bluffs and paranoia, Mr. Prime Minister. You want to tear us away from the European Union. And I will not let you. You have no mandate for it. What I’m telling you today is a generational prosecution. For over 30 years in the politics and 14 years of reign, you have wasted the living standards of Slovak citizens. And today I speak for these millions of people - I will not let you rob us of our future.”
Where is that post that described Šimečka as having “the charisma of a wet noodle”? I want them to look at everything he’s trying to accomplish right now and apologise.

soooo our PM just got shot by just, i mean... they reported it an hour and half ago?
it is very chaotic. he is both okay and dying (well, some media reported he was not in the risk of dying and then the governmental office said he was very much in the risk of death so idk who to believe).
interesting fact is that it is he who was scaring us with a possible assassination attempt at our almost-president (elected to become a president, not yet sworn in)
What is also interesting is the way people reacted. the opposition is mostly saying "oh no how terrible violence bad we hope the PM makes it" while the coalition is blaming the opposition and journalists.
i think that says something about the state of our politics and also freedom of press
anyway, our constitution doesn't say what's supposed to happen if the PM dies. and denník n (one of the most reliable sources in slovakia) said that if the PM is incapacitated for a long period of time, they are supposed to appoint someone from the ministers to act in their stead. idk how that works if the PM can't appoint anyone due to circumstances that might occur, such as coma or death though, that is quite unprecedented
anyway those are my two eurocents on this as a political science student who should really be actually studying but instead, i read the news, the constitution and then write this

Košice, Slovakia.
Protests titled Slovakia is Europe are taking place on Friday (January 10, 2025) in Bratislava, Košice, Banská Bystrica, Poprad, Žilina, and other Slovak cities, initiated by the civic group Peace for Ukraine.
The demonstrations criticize Prime Minister Robert Fico's actions regarding Russia and call for the defense of democracy, freedom, and Slovakia's security.

Oh, so the new American president/government promised to lower the prices of groceries in the runup to the elections, while also running on policies that would make the inflation worse, and are now admitting that the groceries probably won't get cheaper after all?
(I hate that I have to keep using this meme. USA learn from our mistakes for once challenge.)

Did you know that the first translation of 1984 by George Orwell in Czech was translated and illegaly published while there was still socialism (communism) occupation in Czechoslovakia? It was translated by slovakian teacher and translator Eva Šimečková with afterword written by her husband, slovakian writer, Milan Šimečka and posted symbolically in the year 1984 through czechoslovakian publishers in West Germany reflecting the situation in their home country.
The original publishion here:
And the first legal publishion (in 1991):
And that's not quite all. It actually funny that Eva Šimečková and Milan Šimečka are the grandparents of slovak politician Michal Šimečka (the leader of the most active political (social-liberal) party called Progresívne Slovensko in the slovak opposition against the soviet glorifiing coalition).
Great to know about these iconic moments in the history of czechoslovakian literature.

I would like to apologize to Ukraine on behalf of Slovakia for our prime minister and government. He was always a chuj, but this latest shitshow is not normal. Fucking embarrassment of a representation.
(I would love to say that we take no responsibility, but the fact that people voted for this is what scares me the most.)

The Assassination Attempt On Robert Fico, The Slovak Prime Minister
There is a lot of information going around in the media, since the situation is unfolding. I will attempt to cover the most important details for those who are interested.
Firstly, here is an English article (from BBC) so that you can read more about what unfolded. According to this article, at least three shots could be heard. Robert Fico, the PM, was wounded in the chest area, grabbed by his three security guards and escorted into his car. He was transported to the hospital via a helicopter.
The Attempt happened after a congress meeting in the city of Handlová roughly around 4PM local time. You may read more about the congress here: (Aktuality.sk)
Zuzana Čaputová, Peter Pellegrini, Petr Pavel, Andrej Danko, Juraj Blanár, Michal Šimečka, Igor Matovič, and some other factions, have already given their statement condemning the attack. (Aktuality.sk) Also, here is Petr Fiala and here is Olav Scholz, and here are the Polish political leaders.
Also, Andrej Danko, the vice minister of the Slovak Parliament, is currently blaming the Slovak liberal opposition. (Aktuality.sk) Additionally, the coalition as a whole blames the media and polarised population as a potential reason why this took place.
He is currently in a potentially life-threatening condition.
This article (Aktuality.sk) provides some pictures from around the time of the attempt. This article (Aktuality.sk) provides some video footage. View at your own discretion.
The police suspects a 71-year old man from the city of Levice, who was in legal possession of a firearm. (Aktuality.sk)
I will try to update when I get my hands on some more English sources.
