In 1968, during a period called the “Prague Spring,” Alexander Dubček, the newly elected leader of Czechoslovakia, enacted pro-democracy reforms that loosened state control and expanded individual rights, giving hope to citizens and angering the Soviet Union.

Soviet leaders in Moscow believed that Czechoslovakia, a member of the Warsaw Pact, had gone too far, and summoned the country’s leaders for discussions. By late summer, the talks were not going the way the Kremlin had wanted, so more than 2,000 tanks and thousands more Warsaw Pact troops were sent to invade and occupy the country on August 21.

In the first weeks, occupying soldiers were met with protests and limited resistance, and more than 70 civilians were killed in the conflicts.

On top of that, Ultimate Dirk’s and Alternate Calliope’s arguments/conversations are so… funny sometimes? Like, at first I didn’t get it, but upon second read I was like, yeah, okay, this is objectively the funniest way this could go. Callie’s detached pragmatism gets SUCH a rise out of Dirk, who is trying his best to put on this tough unfeeling persona is something you just can’t get in a summary. You have to read it for yourself.

You can't read beyond canon without reading the epilogues

There is this fear new readers have about the epilogues that causes them to "just watch a summary" or completely skip them to get to the "actual webcomic" because they heard the epilogues were awful terrible wastes of space that ruin all the characters and shit all over the fans!!!

But they aren't! The epilogues have an obvious amount of love poured into them and explore so many interesting concepts. Candy in particular cannot be done ANY justice without reading it yourself, the plot beats sound awful in a vacuum but the vibe and experience are something unlike anything I have read before. It is unsettling, depressing and even digusting at times but it also, despite everything, full of hope.

Beyond canon is a sequel to the epilogues not just narrativelt but also thematically. Act 1 candy continues to build on the concepts and vibe of candy in interesting and unique ways, an experience you can't properly conceptualise unless you read the epilogues yourself.

That also isn't to get into Meat at all, which has its own certain plot elements I dont think can be done justice in a summary, especially since most summaries completely skip over the implications, but that is a rant for another time.

Anyway go read the epilogues and form your own opinion. The fanbase is salty and incapable of the surface level media literacy the epilogues ask for.
