“Break into Grimmauld, are you mad?! All the gold in the Black family vault couldn’t get me back in that hellhole. No way!” Sirius huffed, crossing his arms over his chest. 

“I need that locket,” Regulus spat out through gritted teeth. 

“Wait, you want me to risk my neck for a piece of jewellery? Don’t you have enough on with your rings?” Sirius asked incredulously, pointing at Regulus’s hands, adorned with silver rings. “Best transfigure those as well. I can smell them a mile away.” Sirius grimaced, screwing up his face. 

“That locket is Salazar Slytherin’s locket,” Regulus pressed the subject. 

“So?” Sirius rolled his eyes. 

“I stole it from the Dark Lord, and what do you mean you can smell my rings?” Regulus screwed up his face in a mirror copy of his brothers. 

“Werewolf remember. We don’t like silver,” Sirius sighed exasperatedly. “Honestly, didn’t you listen in Defence against the Dark Arts?” Regulus looked down at his hands. 

“Oh,” He said quietly. 

A wand reached over and tapped his rings one by one. They shimmered and turned to a different type of metal, heavier. He was so taken aback by the audacity of someone performing a spell on him without his permission that he hissed in a breath when he turned and realised it was Potter. 

“They’re steel now, but you can turn them back to silver, it’s not permanent.” James grinned down at him. Regulus glowered at him and took a few steps away.

“That locket could be the key to defeating the Dark Lord. We need it.” He reiterated. 

“Why not send Rorbey then?” Sirius said, trying to come up with an alternative. 

“He's never been to Grimmauld Place and if he’s caught people will ask too many questions.”

“Oh and if I’m caught they won’t?” Sirius scoffed. 

“Fine, Rorbey’s more valuable than you are. If they catch him, it could mean death for us all. If you’re caught they’ll probably just kill you.” Regulus explained a bit more harshly than was probably necessary. But he hadn’t been able to snipe at another being for month's and Sirius was so easy to wind up. “We need that locket, Sirius, there’s no other way.” He sighed and walked away from the small group, back towards the tree line he needed a moment to plan out the mission. He hadn’t gotten far when he heard the sound of boots coming towards him. He expected Sirius, following him, to moan a bit more. He did not expect his pursuer to be James Potter.

This is more specifically in modern aus where they're a few years further apart and their parents work constantly so it's actually plausible that Sirius was forced into the role of raising him (I'm thinking about 5/6 years or smth)

He'll show up to the function, in detail describe the many ways he could kill and hide James, Remus, and Peter's bodies so nobody could ever find them, stare silently, then Sirius would come over and hug him like 'reg, you made it! it's so good to see you all happy and willing to talk to people, look at you, you're so sweet' while the other three are like 😰

“Riri,” Regulus whispered through a crack of the bathroom door.

Sirius, who was walking past turned to look at him. “Hey Reg, what’s up?”

“Come here” Regulus whispered. He hoped his brother would approve of him.

Sirius steps into the bathroom and shuts the door behind him softly. When he turns around his mouth drops. Regulus, who once had long flowing black hair, had cut it above his ears.

“Reg you can’t- you-“ Sirius sputtered, touching the hair carefully.

Regulus’s face dropped. “You don’t like it?” Regulus asked, frowning.

“Oh no, I love it. You look amazing but-“

“I wanted to be like you” Regulus said softly, grasping at Sirius’s hand.

Sirius, who was only 14, nodded carefully. “Okay, Reg. Shit.”

“What? What’s wrong?” Regulus asked. Sirius was turned away, Regulus trying to look into his eyes.

They heard heels click on the stairs and Sirius turned to Regulus, putting his hands on either sides of his face. “I am so so proud of you. You look amazing and you’re doing so good. I love you.” Sirius said before kicking the door open and dragging Regulus out in front of their mother. “Maman! Look what I did to Reg’s hair!”

Regulus swallowed harshly. “Maman I-“

Sirius slapped a hand over his mouth. “Doesn’t she look good!”

Walburga’s eyes narrowed as she grasped Sirius by the arm and took him to the foyer. Regulus could hear the cries of pain as he sobbed to himself in his bedroom.
