Chapter 12: Souvenirs

“Just so we’re clear—you do realize that making shirts for a militant secret counterforce does sort of ruin the point right?”

In response, the motorcycle roars to life underneath him, the vibrant hum of muggle machinery still as foreign and perverse as riding a purring lion into battle. 

“Maybe I just wanted to match you?” Sirius grins, “Is that so wrong? I only made the two so consider it a souvenir.”

“In that case I’ll cherish it forever.”

this was really hard because for once ever I have actually quite a few fully fleshed out wips rolling around. But here's one from a jilyweek fic I'm working on:

“Alright, you got me. Mary might have tipped Remus off that you took a summer job at a—how did she describe it— ‘a muggle’s very very bad interpretation of the wizarding world’ and I couldn’t resist.”

Lily groans, taking a mental note to murder Mary and subsequently Remus.

“Of course you couldn’t.”

James gives a small shrug, a guilty line running through his forehead. 

“Don’t be cross with me Evans. Summer’s been such a drag—and consider this research for muggle studies.”

“You don’t take muggle studies.”

“But I could,” James shoots back, breezy, “And with this undercover expedition I’m pulling, I reckon I’ll get an O just walking in the door.”

Love that you included the prequel!! It’s one of my favorite bits of canon but JKRs comment about the timing of events has never made sense to me…but the lead up to it in your fic totally works!

Also love that they made matching t shirts 😂

They have the matching shirts in the prequel too! It’s one of my favorite bits from it and I always found it so funny that they HAD to have made the shirts themselves (because there’s no way the order had shirts…)

As someone who generally skews Wolfstar if anything for Remus and Sirius' romantic interest, I've been spending a needless amount of time trying to justify jkr's decision to make remadora a thing and I think I've landed on something I can accept:

Tonks, to Remus, is James. (Bear with me)

I think it's important to notice that all of the living marauders in canon seem to be hyper fixated on filling the empty hole that James left behind--- afterall, James' patronus and animagi respectively were a stag which is considered thematically to be the king of the forest, so I don't think it's a stretch to assume James was the de facto 'leader' of the group.

We see Sirius do this with Harry (and understandably so as he's the only son and physical lookalike to James), Peter with Voldemort ( the only one of the three to 'replace' James early because he needed a protector--aka what James was before the war was on his doorstep), and then Remus with Tonks...

Tonks is the embodiment of youth, she's fiercely loyal, fights for what she thinks is right, but also doesn't take life so seriously. She exudes joy and hope and spends most of her time in canon cracking jokes or trying to entertain and take care of the younger generation during a very real war---all of these attributes we can presume James also had.

I know there will be some naysayers who will say 'but James is hardly in the books and he was a bully!' but---c'mon lets read between the lines here. We know James was loyal (too loyal...), he died young so he'd still have that playful youthfulness to him, he was a trickster and it's clear in swm he didn't take things seriously, and we have to assume he was hopeful because why would he even go through with fighting in the Order then put family's life into the hands of someone else if he wasn't at least a tiny bit hopeful. Even with the small textual evidence we have, we get the sense that James was the binding holding everyone together, whether that was with loyalty or hope or just plain idiotic optimism, we can't know for sure--but the echos of that are seen in Tonks and I'd assume that's what draws Remus to her.

Plus, James stayed this way towards Remus despite his Lycanthropy, same as Tonks. It's easy to forget because we follow things through Harry's eyes, but people in both the og Order and the 2nd war Order were wary of Remus due to his affliction regardless of what he did. It was still a big deal to find someone willing to look past that and see him as a person first.

So, this long ramble is not to say, oh, I'm a remadora stan now, because (and I apologize) it isn't--nor am I saying moonchaser was a romantic thing. I just think Remus needed an optimistic, loyal presence in his life and he just so happened to find a love interest with those qualities.

Unfortunately, jkr did a shit job fleshing out the relationship so I have a hard time really being 100% behind it, buuuut if I am going to accept canon at face value, this is my thesis. Because, above all, the golden rule of the HP series is that Jily will always find a way to haunt the narrative.

Lily Evans is from Cokeworth, a town in the English midlands, so you can bet she had a real strong working class accent. That, coupled with her refusing to give up muggle slang to assimilate, means that James (posh pureblood pillock that he is) finds Lily incomprehensible for the entire first year.
