[WWDitS finale spoilers]
Aside from the obvious ā€“ the gross shipbaiting and mocking naive viewers who dared to believe an m/m dynamic could be treated as anything other than the butt of the joke ā€“ my biggest issue with the WWDitS finale is that itā€™s an ending that could have made senseā€¦ but at most after s2. Back then, we were still watching a story about characters who didnā€™t share any particular bonds (except for Nadja/Laszlo) and who were entirely static, unaffected by the things they experienced.
The thing is, the creators themselves realized you canā€™t build a long-running story on that formula ā€“ eventually, the characters had to evolve at least a little, and their relationships had to deepen so viewers would have any reason to root for them. And so Guillermoā€™s position in the group began to change ā€“ first, he earned their minimal respect, then a very solid place, until finally, in season 5, all the other characters had reached a point where they didnā€™t even hide that they genuinely cared about him a lot. The same happened with Colin, who at first was completely left out by the other housemates but gradually earned an equal spot in the group and developed that stupid yet sweet bond with Laszlo (erasing those memories was, imo, one of the writersā€™ biggest mistakes). Laszlo showed himself capable of empathy, which he proved again in s5 by helping Guillermo, and even Nadja, who used to completely disregard everyoneā€™s feelings, had several moments in later seasons where she openly cared ā€“ at least in her own way ā€“ Ā about the others.
And of course, thatā€™s how we got the romantic subtext between Guillermo and Nandor. Over all those seasons ā€“ from s3 up until s6 ā€“ I was certain it was a classic will they, wonā€™t they dynamic that would end with them getting together. I just couldnā€™t believe the writers would spend the last 4 seasons making their relationship more equal and showing Nandorā€™s journey to realizing Guillermo genuinely mattered to him, only to do nothing with it ā€“ or worse, regress them back by three seasons. But the late s6 Nandorā€™s ā€œno homoā€ attitude has very little in common with the Nandor from seasons 4 and 5, who was openly pining and lusting after Guillermo.
From Guillermoā€™s perspective, this ending is an absolute tragedy ā€“ even the end of the previous episode gave him much more hope. Maybe heā€™d lost his lifelong dream and still hadnā€™t found a new purpose, but he had found a family and a place in the world, with a potential chance to build something meaningful with Nandor in the future. I donā€™t understand why this episode had to undo all of that ā€“ to show us that none of his friends really listen to him, that the power dynamic with Nandor will always be uneven, and that ultimately he wasted 16 years, and no one would really care that much if he left. Considering how great Guillermoā€™s development was, especially in gaining confidence from s4 onward, this ending feels so unfair and insulting to his character.
I feel like the writersā€™ biggest mistakes have been forcing a return to the status quo after every season. After the breakup in s3, the characters should have stayed apart for at least an episode or two. Colin should have remembered that Laszlo raised him, and they shouldā€™ve kept their funny, fucked-up father-son relationship until the end of the show. Guillermo shouldā€™ve been a real vampire for at least a full seasonā€”or, in my opinion, permanentlyā€”because, as it turns out, the writers had absolutely no idea what to do with his character once he lost that goal. Relationships that had evolved shouldnā€™t be randomly reset by a couple of seasons just because the writers couldnā€™t be bothered to put in the effort to write anything new for them.
You canā€™t have your cake and eat it too ā€“ if the writers were so dead-set on giving us an Ā ending that says ā€œnothing in these charactersā€™ lives matters, and nothing will ever change,ā€ they should have made the show half as long and spared viewers the trouble of getting invested in character and relationship arcs that ultimately went nowhere.
This is a comedy show that was supposed to make people feel better. After this finale, I feel mocked by the creators for believing that the queer ship they sold me for 4 seasons had a chance of being treated equally to an m/f ship. Iā€™m also sad because the characters were regressed and left stuck in eternal limbo, and generally I feel ridiculed because the writers openly made fun of us for getting emotionally invested in the story they wrote for us.
And maybe the biggest crime of these last few episodes was that they werenā€™t even remotely funnyā€”so you canā€™t even say they prioritized comedy over character development, because it failed on that front too.

I love how Barney and Robin are together because of Ted and Tracy (Ted made them meet, Tracy basically convinced them to get married), while Ted and Tracy are together because of Barney and Robin (met at their wedding)

Thinking about how crazy it would be if Ted Mosby and late-show Rebecca Bunch interacted. It would go about as well as putting gasoline on a fire. She would tell him to prioritize figuring out who he is and solving the deeper issues in his life that this search for the one is a proxy for and smoke would come out of his ears before his head exploded. A character like her who wants to focus on non-romantic pursuits not because she's canonically using them to try to make her father proud of her cough cough Robin cough cough but because she's come to realize the value of truly putting herself first and not in a sexy way being in HIMYM would be like someone with a gun showing up to a knife fight. Barney would approach her and then burn up in her presence before he could say anything.

In general I am for long (20-24 episodes) seasons of television instead of short seasons. But also there is too much. Like I have too many choices.
Do I rewatch all of Buffy the vampire and it's spin off Angel. Or black sails or how I met your mother or Phineas and Ferb.
Do I finally catch up on law and order SVU or criminal minds?
Do I actually get around to finishing person of interest or lost or the dragon prince?
Do I watch Homicide:life on the streets, or west wing or nobody wants this or English teacher?
None of that is even considering reality tv like survivor or the amazing race or longform YouTube videos
Life is long but streaming services are expensive and decision paralysis has really got me down

Benefits
phan fwb to lovers, 2011 era, canon divergent, 1/4 (rated E)
"Stop, stop!" Phil said suddenly, his expression a little softer. "God, what is going on? Before you moved in, we were practically living together and we didn't drive each other this crazy." "I know," Dan said, nodding. "What happened?" They paused for a moment, the air quiet between them. He wasn't wrong. Phil would stay over at his so often that people tended to assume he was living there already. Well, that wasn't all people assumed about them, but that was something they never breathed a word about to each other. Then Phil suddenly looked up at him. "You know what it is? We were having sex."
Or, Dan and Phil come up with an interesting way to settle roommate arguments.

Steve and Eddie having a slap bet. The bet was heinous and they never reveal out loud what it was, only that Eddie lost with a jaw-dropping-ly awful wager. Steve was deeply offended. He still took the bet anyway.
Anyways, he gets to slap Eddie five times at any moment, any where. As hard as he wants.
The gag is, every time Steve delivers one of his five slaps, their friends descend on him, yelling. But Steve leans over and whispers in their ear the terms of the bet, and their friend immediately turns on Eddie who is forced to defend himself while being yelled abuse.
