Mighty I Am Priest accepted the alternate ending where Robin divorces Barney if she doesn't get back together with Ted behind. Damn, I bless the alternate ending for that ! Ted & Tracy, happy ending !!! But even if there was an alternate ending to Friends where Rachel stays on that plane and doesn't get back together with Ross, I could never be satisfied ! I can't stand a world where Joey & Rachel aren't together okay ?! They have no excuse! At least Barney and Robin had problems during their relationship. Finally, can we even compare since Barney and Robin actually had a real relationship unlike Rachel & Joey ?! I mean, the reason they broke up is so ridiculous that even if an alternate ending to Friends existed where it didn't end with Joye but also not with Ross, I still wouldn't be able to live peacefully !

Having just rewatched How I Met Your Mother, I canot stress enough how much the ending of the show is a slap in the face for a bet I didn't lose.

The show managed a very difficult thing, and that is having Tracy live up to the expectations set during the run of the show. She was the definition of Legen-wait-for-it-dary.

If they had wanted to subvert the expectations in some way, Ted could've told the story while Tracy was in surgery, and he distracted himself. It would have explained why some of the stories were inappropriate. And the show then could've ended with a call that Tracy had gotten out of the surgery, and she was well and then another time skip where all the kids are grown up and everyone is gathered together for some important event, like Ted turning 60 or Ted and Tracy renewing their vows. Or heck, just let it end on a more ambiguous note and have the story be over when Ted and Tracy chat in the train station right after they first meet.

Another subversion of expectations could've come in the form of Ted being the one who was sick, and he told the story to his children so they would know exactly how much Ted loved their mother and also to enforce that even if he were to die his friends would be there for Penny and Luke. Though this one wouldn't fit quite as well with the rest of the show, with Ted getting emotional over a mother missing his daughter's wedding and him saying that he would take another 45 minutes with Tracy if he could.

Ted and Robin don't work as a couple. They are better off as friends. This is based on the show that we got. Had the show ended after three or four seasons, then sure, the ending that we got would have been very funny, and a lot of people (myself included) would have been satisfied.

Subversion of expectation works if the rest of the story is kept in mind. There was an extremely poignant moment when Ted let go of Robin and told her that he doesn't love her "that way anymore."

Then you're telling me that all the kids got from the story was that Ted was in love with Robin? No. Just no.

im thinking about this headcannon that i saw saying himym should have ended with ROBIN dying and not tracy bc it justifies ted starting the story with meeting her, and it justifies spending so much time on the period of their lives were the friend group ruled. it’s a heartbreaking idea, that ted sits his kids down to tell them about the girl who was the axis of his world for a while, who is one of his nest friends, who they call their aunt, as a way to cope. a way to remember her and share the time in their lives that they mattered most to each other. its the same idea as friends having to end when chandler and monica had a baby, the story about a friend group is over because they have families now, their lives are about more than just friends. the idea that as barney and robin start a family for themselves, ted meets tracy. that he tells his kids he’s going to tell them the story of how he met their mother, but really starts so far back to attribute the fact that he never would’ve met tracy if it weren’t for robin’s important presence in their lives. maybe im just going crazy hoping for any other idea than the real finale like every other fan, but i love this sm.
