this may seem needlessly finicky but I do actually believe it's important: calling Verin a himbo is just one of many examples where like, one of the cast says something off the cuff and it's not exactly the right word or it is highly contextual, and that is fine because no one is perfect especially in improv, but then it gets repeated ad infinitum within the fandom when it never really fit in the first place. We have Verin's stats and he's decently more intelligent than average with a 13 (smarter than most of Bells Hells for one; as smart as Pike); it's just he's the guy with a bachelor's degree with good grades followed by military service in a family where everyone has two PhDs - Matt said "himbo of the family" the way in a family where most people are exceptionally tall you'd call the 5'11" child the short one. In Call of the Netherdeep he appears as thoughtful and competent and promoted to a difficult position at a very young age, and in the campaign his appearance is simultaneously as a leader of troops in a dangerous mission, and someone who cares enough about poetry from a completely foreign and distant culture to have tried to learn more about it. I'm sorry, but if you're using the word "himbo" I don't think you're processing a thing about the character yourself; you're just the latest repetition in a game of telephone that's been going on since mid-2021.

And that's not deeply bad on the surface, and I'm using Verin not because he is the character most wronged by this sort of thing but because he's recent and it's really clear where the word came from and that it's not a good assessment, but something I happen to have a decent knack for is pattern recognition in language. I usually find it really easy to pick up on when someone's plagiarized because of the language and pattern shifts. I tend to remember urls and out of place words well. So I do tend to notice when everyone suddenly starts using a single turn of phrase and I tend to flag it. Sometimes that's not bad; sometimes it means everyone came to a similar conclusion and that's the best way to express that conclusion. But like, when Taliesin called the Yios episode a gas-leak episode and the entire fandom started parroting it? The line "bone-dry takes"? The fact that a lot of ship defenses I see were phrased precisely as "I have eyes"? without actually talking about the ship itself? the fact that I've seen a spike in the use of the term "ontologically evil" including in myself and not all uses are actually correct? And extending this beyond strictly language but consider any headcanon with minimal textual support that catches like wildfire (sidebar: remember how we make, or made fun of the SPREAD THIS LIKE WILDFIRE tendency on Tumblr a decade ago? same concept of repetition of a specific turn of phrase without internalizing) all sort of ping this.

And it's fine, truly, to come to fandom and turn off your brain. I know this will sound sarcastic from me, and that's because I don't personally agree, but I do strongly agree that you can do what you want in fandom and you don't have to listen to my opinions so in the end, yeah, it's fine because I am not the arbiter of "fine". But I think critical thought is a vital exercise and I think precision with language is part of it and so if you find yourself using the same exact words and thoughts as everyone else, that should, ideally, trigger a process of "but are these the right words? what do I see when I see this character and how would I describe them? do I agree with this assessment?" Fandom is an interesting and easier microcosm than reality in which to start doing that.

i’ve seen gimleaf fics where they each try to find out how to court by the other’s traditions. and i love those, so i think they ought to be taken a step further. and i think the way to do that would be, naturally, to make bagginshield real. allow me to explain why. ahem. after the ring is destroyed, girlfailure legolas spends two weeks poring over The Ancient Texts and stressing because his one (1) friend who WOULD help him (that’s aragorn) knows jack shit about dwarves beyond the surface (no pun intended) (well gandalf knows things but gandalf is a bitch) (he would just smile at legolas knowingly and wish him good luck instead of giving him answers).

so alas, girlfailure “shit tier ass elf” legolas is left to like, idk, sulk or something in the garden he starts at the Bestie Residence in minas tirith. and after like 2 days sam’s had enough he’s like “dude your vibes are upsetting the plants.” and legolas is like “my bad bro. it just seems i know nothing about dwarves which i probably should’ve thought about before, by elf standards, getting hitched in vegas.” and sam is like “oh dwarves? just ask mister frodo ^_^ he knows tons about dwarves!” and legolas is like “what the shit? him in particular? why does he anything about dwarves?” and sam leans in reaaaalllllll close and whispers behind his hand, “well you see mister elf, mister legolas, sir, there’s always been a very healthy amount of rumors that go around in the shire about mister frodo’s uncle, mister bilbo, and the letters he used to exchange with a certain king under the mountain.” and legolas, who was THERE, is like

teehee this ask is old but i’m gonna use it as an opportunity to talk more about tennis player yuuta in light of spending my entire day watching the olympics 

let’s talk about yuuta girlfailure core <3 ik i wrote a drabble about you pretending to want tennis lessons to get in his pants, but allow me to offer you this: he legitimately cannot be around you, much less attempt to be your teacher if you decide you wanna dress up in a tennis skirt. the first time he sees you in one (or worse, on the little tennis dresses) he makes up some excuse about having to take a call or not feeling well, when really he’s just in the bathroom trying to get a grip (and it does not work). 

the second time you get all dressed up for lessons from him, he pawns you off to megumi. he doesn’t want to disappoint you with completely cancelling your lessons and wasting your time, so he figures his very decorated doubles partner will make for a good stand in teacher while yuuta scurries back inside and takes a very cold shower. 

and when he finally does get a hold of himself, it’s not even like he goes easy on you bye, he’s pummeling you but it’s only bc he’s so frustrated, and unfortunately for you, tennis happens to be his outlet 😭 when you finally march you way over to his side of the court and grab him by the ear and ask him what his problem is he’s literally trying to count sheep in his head to avoid saying something embarrassing or flat out moaning because wow you look kinda good when you’re mad and him and why does the pain of you pulling at him feel kind of good and he’s wondering if he just stands there long enough if you’ll slap him and, and—

“yuuta okkotsu are you whimpering?”

“no…. maybe,” he pouts, dipping his head down to rest it against your shoulder. he can feel the vibrations of your laughter as he shamefully confesses, “i didn’t know i’d have a thing for you doing this and… dressing like that but i do.” 

“yeah, join the club, loser,” you giggle when he pulls back with a scrunched expression. you smile as you press your index finger between his furrowed brows, “the only reason i have any remote interest in learning to play is because you look crazy good while you’re playing.” 

“oh, okay…. wait—really?” 

you nod earnestly and it paints the sweetest blush across yuuta’s cheeks. instinctually you reach out to pinch them, bemused by how your boyfriend has the ability to go from hitting a ball several miles per hour to being reduced to a reddening mess at the touch of your fingers.

“yes, really,” you tell him, “but i do actually want to learn, so we’re going to have to figure out a way to do this that doesn’t involve you running away, or me getting clobbered by tennis balls.” 

“yeah, okay,” he nods, breathless, and that intense look is back in his eyes when he places his hands on your hips, “but, not now. later. i don’t want to play anymore.”

Yes she is attractive, but she’s also just an absolute disaster. She’s a disheveled mess, she has massive eyebags, can’t do her makeup worth shit, pulls her pants up to her fucking belly button, walks like she’s a goddamn question mark, can’t talk to people (or animatronics) worth shit, literally MOCKS people (that is CANON), and literally just has no idea what she’s doing at any point whatsoever.

She’s a dork ok. She would rather play video games than literally do anything else. She has a glittery pink journal with goddamn puppies on it, she bakes cupcakes and has rainbow hair extensions. She put toe beans on a RABBIT costume when RABBITS DO NOT HAVE TOE BEANS. DORK!

Even in the MOVIE, she’s a soggy loser. She threw a man’s sleeping pills in the river, she threatened to SHOOT a man on sight if he ever brought his kid sister back to Freddy’s. She asked said man to dance in the most awkward way possible, and she actively built a fort with a bunch of ghost kids haunting animatronics.

So please. Literally on my hands and knees BEGGING this fandom.. MAKE HER THE SILLY DORK LOSER SHE IS. She’s not a ‘serious’ character. She’s overly anxious and screams at people bc she can’t control her own emotions. Take a better look at her character and I promise you’ll see it!

Since MC gets put on deadly situations almost daily....

A MC who is very clumsy and gets seriously hurt very often, so every time they have a near death experience they are visited by a reaper (mostly Thirteen), so now every time Thirteen visits them, they turns her visit into an opportunity to flirt with her (obviously Thirteen Is very concerned about this, how can a human be so careless?)
