Summary: Wen Qing would probably never know who their nameless cultivator used to be, or what kind of secret grief he hides beneath his bowed shoulders. But the man makes Wei Wuxian smile, in a way he doesn't anymore after Lan Wangji refused to stay for dinner and never visited again. And perhaps, surrounded by death and resentment as they are, perhaps that's enough. After wandering the realm for years in the wake of his wife's death, Qingheng-Jun came to the Burial Mounds - And stayed. Kay's comments: Qingheng-Jun/Wei Wuxian is not a pairing I would have ever read on my own, but since it was written by ChilianXianzi, I knew I had to give it a try and I wasn't disappointed! Nothing happens between them and the story is endgame Wangxian, but Qingheng-Jun certainly develops feelings for our Xiao-laozu. Really loved the idea of him just becoming a rogue cultivator after his wife's death and the Lan clan merely saying he's in seclusion because they have no idea where he is. In the end, it all works out too and he goes to scold his nephews and brother into making things right with Wei Wuxian and the Wens. Mostly The Untamed canon! Excerpt: "Aiyah, Daozhang, you're so good at this," Wei Wuxian sighs, "Are you sure you were a rogue cultivator and not some prodigious farmer, huh?" "My-" Daozhang Zhou's voice falters for the briefest moment, and Wen Qing holds herself against looking up from tending to her own herbs, ears pricking, "Someone very dear to me was fond of growing things, and I suppose I learned some things, watching her." "She used to plant all sorts of things, made them grow so beautifully," Daozhang Zhou continues, his voice now quiet and musing, as if he's not talking to Wei Wuxian anymore, "But she loved gentians, covered her garden with it, and gave me the dried blossoms to keep." Even Wei Wuxian has turned quiet beside the Daozhang, a heartbreaking understanding in his grey eyes. Wen Qing had always wondered what their nameless Daozhang had lost, what ghosts he carries around his shoulders so heavily - But now that she's seen the outline of it forms, it just makes her feel a too-familiar bereftness. A kindred grief. Wen Qing stands quietly, and leaves the two to their shared grief and potatoes.

Anyone from civilian to cultivator, child to elderly, knew who Baoshan Sanren was. In one word, a legend. An immortal from a different era, still alive and still teaching to few her cultivation secrets - many envied and wished they were one of her students.

She had various children over the centuries, each with their own success and fame, but recently, although it is known three children were born, none came out telling others about their lineage - something that started to be common since other cultivators wanted to have immortality to themselves at all costs, hunting down the immortal's descendants to use them to their own gains.

They knew some of her disciples who came down her mountain - now a fixed location with better protection than any place on earth, rather than her nomad days. One of them was a woman who was known for her wits, intelligence, craft and beautiful smile - Cangse Sanren.

She was also infamous for her elopement with Yunmeng Jiang sect's former first disciple - Wei Changze.

This was common knowledge, every cultivator had heard this story at least once during their lives, they all knew the names and their connections to each other. But what Lan Wangji failed to connect was the fact that Wei Ying was their only son and is now his boyfriend (who he plans to marry one day).

He knew, objectively, about Wei Ying's parents, but had never met them until one day when they met them by fate during a date to the movies. It was very shocking and nerve-wracking to meet his in-laws so soon into their relationship and in such a casual way, with not even a gift to offer.

Not long after that, he was invited to dinners, then afternoon teas, then lunches and then breakfasts (he felt so honourable the first night he was allowed to sleep in Wei Ying's bedroom). Lan Wangji was, more and more, feeling part of the family, meaning that he was accepted as their beloved son's other half.

When he thought all the nervousness had passed, he was invited to a family gathering with their other relatives from Wei Ying's mother side, and that included Cangse Sanren's mother.

That same afternoon, after accepting the invite, Lan Wangji walked all the way to his brother's apartment (on the other side of the corridor), knocked, walked inside without saying anything, threw himself into Lan Xichen's bed and hugged one (of many, many) body pillows that was a permanent part of his brother's room (a secret from the rest of the family, beside their mother).

"Wangji?!" Lan Xichen was frantic with concern "What happened?"

"I'm going to meet Wei Ying's family."

"...Is it that bad?"

"Wei Ying's grandmother is Baoshan Sanren."

"...Oh."

Lan Xichen laid down beside his younger brother, hugging another body pillow, both staring at the ceiling with stunned expressions.

"Oh." Lan Xichen said again.

Headcanon on the Twin Jade's mother, Qingheng-Jun and his teacher

What if Qingheng-Jun(QHJ) isnt Lan Xichen's father?

What if Madam Lan(LM) found out QHJ's teacher was taking advantage of guest disciples during the lectures and she went to QHJ about it. When he refused to believe it, she confronted the man herself. 

What if QHJ found her still under the Lan Silence Spell and Body-Locking Spell after being r*ped. What if QHJ released her from the spells and she didn't hesitate to grab her sword and get revenge. 

A couple of years after Lan Huan was born LQR convinced QHJ to consummate the marriage/have a 2nd heir in order to protect A-Huan's legitimacy from scrutiny. QHJ only compiled because ML's safety relied on the validity of their marriage.

What if LQR subtly encouraged the title of Twin Jades to conflate their conceptions and give one more barrier of protection over A-Huans legitimacy?

in the flowers in the palace au, when did lwj realize that she was in love with wwx? It seems like she knows by the first part of the series, since lqr is trying to encourage lwj to marry and she's refusing, so did lwj fall in love when wwx was studying at the cr (if that happened in this verse)?

Lan Wangji's love realization happens when Wei Wuxian breaks into the Cloud Recesses to comfort her in "for myself, in my frenzied heart." This doesn't have much to do with Lan Wangji's refusal to marry; she was simply raised differently from most other girls in the FITP universe, because Lan Qiren and Qingheng-jun knew they could rely on Nie Mingjue to protect her after their deaths through NMJ's marriage to Lan Xichen.

During Lan Wangji's childhood, Nie Mingjue's father was a high-ranking general who controlled the most important military garrison in the empire, and LQR/QHJ were confident that Lan Wangji would be free to live the life she wanted (and stay safe from power plays within the Lan clan) as long as LXC had the Nie family behind her. Thus, LWJ was allowed to choose the subjects she studied after she came of age; and when she decided to pursue higher studies in music and weapons training instead of learning how to manage a household, QHJ didn't object.

By 21, Lan Wangji would have found it extremely difficult to fulfill any of the responsibilities of a gentry wife, so QHJ/LQR never considered marrying her off until Qin Su joined NMJ's harem as a concubine (signaling a loss of favor/power on Lan Xichen's part).

One thing that I find absolutely hilarious about mdzs is how flippantly the cultivation setting is treated and how little it actually means for the characters. Esp compared to mxtx’s other works.

Like, svsss has the more typical style of cultivation with formal levels (qi gathering, foundation establishment, core formation, etc). It’s slightly bullshitted thanks to Airplane’s writing style, but it’s implied that it takes decades of hard work to move between stages and it’s also implied that cultivators can and do live for centuries because they are cultivating towards immortality

And tgcf literally focuses on people who cultivate into godhood. Like we see ‘regular’ cultivators as well, but we also know that people in this setting are capable of becoming literal gods, and we know that it typically takes a lot of hard work to do so as well

But mdzs? Forming a golden core is nothing. Everyone has one. They’re handed out like candy. Wwx is lauded as a prodigy for forming one as young as he did, but his peers still seem to form theirs in their teens. And having a golden core means little to nothing for the characters except boosted strength and stamina, and that they can use magic

Putting aside the literal war killing people off and affecting the average cultivator’s lifespan, we see almost no evidence of anyone cultivating to immortality aside from Baoshen-sanren, who is an outlier. These characters all have golden cores! Granted, every xianxia-style story has different rules for how cultivation works, and in mdzs the focus seems to be more on using cultivation for practicality (night hunts) rather than any sort of ascension, but usually having a golden core will at least extend your life beyond the normal length

Not in mdzs! Jin Guangshan dies in his…sixties, maybe? Possibly younger, even! But he��s generally thought of as ‘old’ and everyone readily accepts that he died from ‘overexerting himself’ in that orgy. A sixty-year-old cultivator with a fully-formed golden core is considered old and decrepit! That’s a young’un in other cultivation settings!!

The other ‘old man’ we see is Lan Qiren, who could ostensibly be as young as his thirties during the Cloud Recesses study arc (bc keep in mind that he’s Qingheng-jun’s younger brother, and given the general lifespans of all the mdzs characters, it’s not unreasonable to assume qhj married and had his kids in early adulthood). Granted, to my memory wwx is the only one who thinks of him as an ‘old man,’ and anyone above, like, twenty would be seen as old to a fifteen-year-old, but still. Wwx continues to consider him an old man post-timeskip when it’s entirely possible he’s only in his late forties or fifties.

I don’t really have a conclusion or any sort of deep analysis for this, I just thought this difference in setting was an interesting/funny departure from mxtx’s other works and wanted to ramble. Feel free to leave thoughts/observations in the notes!

Guys, I just now noticed one more interesting little detail in the Untamed!

You know the names of the buildings in the Cloud Recesses: the lecture room/hall Lanshi (兰室, Lánshì, "Orchid Room"); Yashi (雅室, Yǎshì, "Elegant Room") – the reception room/hall; the spirit-summoning room/hall Mingshi (冥室, Míngshì, "Underworld Room" or "Room of Darkness"); Hanshi (寒室, Hánshì, "Frost Room") - Lan Xichen's residence; and Lan Wangji's Jingshi (静室, Jìngshì, "Quiet Room"), right?

The character used to write the "shì", room, in the names is 室, here seen in the Lanshi and the Yashi (the names are read from right to left):

As a side note, the Lan seem to use the traditional rather than the simplified characters, so the "lán" in the Lanshi is written with 蘭 rather than 兰.

BUT. Not so in the Jingshi! Instead of the 室, a slightly different character is used for the "room":

My trusty dictionary did not know the character in question, so I started to look at what was different:

As such, the character 凶 (xiōng) means act of violence, murder, evil. An evildoer. A murderer. And as Lan Xichen told Wei Wuxian, we know who lived in the Jingshi before it became Lan Wangji's residence: "It is the place where our mother lived in the Cloud Recesses".

So, it seems that when the house became Madam Lan's prison, the character was changed to reflect her crime, denoting the place as the quiet room of a murderer. Accentuated by the reversed colours of the sign:

This has probably been quite self-evident to anyone who actually speaks and reads Chinese, but was quite an oooff! to me as I realised. One more killer detail in CQL 😟.

And while I was at it, I just had to check what it says above the gate (seen here when LWJ returns home with the Emperor's Smile):

As far as I can read it, the characters are 影竹堂 (yǐng zhú táng), which I freely translate as "Bamboo Shadow Court". An apt name for the place.

Hopefully it offered some solace to Madam Lan.

And oh, I just have to add! As Hanshi is the Sect Leader's residence, Lan Xichen is living in their father's house, while Lan Wangji is living in their mother's. And the two houses are more or less identical, down to the furnishings (just check the scene where Lan Xichen confronts Wen Chao and his muddy boots in ep8 vs. The Wangxian Scene in ep43). So did Qingheng-jun have the house built for his wife, identical to the house she was not allowed to live in? That is quite plausible, in universe. Out universe, they probably had only so many buildings to shoot in :).

The backstory that I want to know the most from MDZS is Madam Lan. I have so many questions about how that story went.

Why did she kill the teacher? I doubt it was just a fun little murder she committed cause if it was then they never would have let her live let alone let her children be the heirs of the sect. Plus a woman killing a man in a position of power is usually for a good reason.

If she and Qingheng-jun were in seclusion in different houses, how did Wangji and Xichen come about? Like did they have conjugal visits with each other or something? Was it only because Qingheng-jun needed and heir? If so, why was Wangji also allowed to be born?

How did she die? Was it suicide because she was confined to a home and only allowed to see her children once a month? Did she get sick?

Why were her children only allowed to see her once a month? That is a really long time to go in between visits especially for kids who were probably taken away from her right after being born.

I just think there is a lot about her that needs to be explained.

WujiWatch: CQL Rewatch Episode 15

CQL is an especially rewarding show to rewatch (and to write fic about) in part because of the ambiguities that the show intentionally leaves unresolved. What happened to Wei Wuxian's parents? Why did Lan Wangji's mother kill Qingheng-jun's teacher? Does resurrected Wei Wuxian have a golden core or not? Why did Xue Yang and Jin Guangyao have a falling-out? What is Baoshan Sanren's deal?

The ambiguity that hangs over this episode is: would Yu Ziyuan really have cut off Wei Wuxian's hand? You can argue it either way, and fans do: yes, she had every intention of cutting off his hand until Wang Lingjiao started talking about creating a Yunmeng Supervisory Office, which was the actual dealbreaker; no, she was only playing along to buy time and would never have really done it.

Trying to resolve this ambiguity by reading into Yu Ziyuan's words and actions is a dead end. The show gives us occasional internal-monologue voiceovers for some characters (including one for Wei Wuxian in this very scene) but never for her, and certainly not here. We can't read her mind. We'll never know for sure.

But to me, the truly decisive fact is: both Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian absolutely believe she is going to do it. Jiang Cheng pleads with her to spare Wei Wuxian - you could say he, too, is just playing along, but that doesn't check out; that boy cannot act worth a damn. (His numerous unhelpful emotional outbursts, in this scene alone, demonstrate a total inability to act in a way contrary to his true feelings.) And we know Wei Wuxian believes she's going to do it because the writers helpfully give us a voiceover in which he immediately resigns himself to the loss of his hand. The thought that Yu Ziyuan might be faking it doesn't even cross his mind.

So to me, this is one ambiguity that isn't that ambiguous in the end: the two people in this scene who've spent their whole lives observing Yu Ziyuan, who know her better than we as viewers ever will, have no doubt that she would and will maim Wei Wuxian for life.

His eyes are big, but despite some suspicion in their depths, the boy mostly looks curious. “Hello, A-Ying,” Lan Wangji says kindly. “I heard that you prayed to me.” --- a boy, a god and a rebellion against the empire Kay's comments: THIS STORY!! I love it very much and I recently re-read it and it immediately had me hooked once again. This story really has everything. I loved the historical world building with the cultivation sects having fallen a thousand years ago and everyone living under the Wens' tyranny ever since, I loved God!Lan Wangji, who looks out for abandoned children and makes sure Wei Wuxian finds his way to the Jiangs, where he is raised as Jiang Cheng's and Jiang Yanli's personal servant, I absolutely adored Hanguang-Jun hypeman and the very best wing man Lan Jingyi and I loved how Lan Wangji didn't want to admit to himself that he had fallen in love with Wei Wuxian, very in-character for him. Also, the identity shenanigans were very fun! Exerpt: “It is an honour to meet you, Lan- gongzi ,” Wei Wuxian says politely with another bow. “This lowly one is Wei Ying, courtesy Wuxian.” “You have a courtesy name?” Lan Jingyi asks, surprised. Wei Wuxian is used to this surprise and doesn’t do anything other than nod. Lan Jingyi doesn’t pry either—must be the famous Lan restraint to abstain from gossip. “Come with me, I’ll show you to the guest dormitories.” “Many thanks, Lan- gongzi ,” Wei Wuxian replies. Lan Jingyi takes him through the grounds with only a lantern to light the way. Wei Wuxian has missed his chance to explore, but still… “Lan- gongzi , may this one ask you a question?” “Yeah, sure,” Lan Jingyi says. When he shrugs, the lantern he’s carrying gets jostled and the light plays on the shadows around them. “Is it true that the Cloud Recesses have the first temple that was built for Hanguang-jun?” Wei Wuxian asks. “And Zewu-jun?” he adds quickly, in case Lan Jingyi is offended that he’s included only one of them in his question. Lan Jingyi’s face brightens up under the yellow light. “Yeah! Hanguang-jun is the best —and Zewu-jun, of course, but he’s not as cool as Hanguang-jun, although he’s so close. Zewu-jun and Hanguang-jun were the last cultivators to ascend to immortality before the shift into the Wen dynasty when the cultivation clans were wiped out. They were both sons from the direct family line in charge of the Lan Sect—Zewu-jun was the heir and then the sect leader when their father, Qingheng-jun, also ascended to the Heavenly Realm. Zewu-jun is the god who protects leaders and musicians—you may note that his statues always depict him playing the xiao—he’s a martial god regardless, like his younger brother, Hanguang-jun.” Wei Wuxian knows all of this, but he doesn’t interrupt. Lan Jingyi sounds as excited to tell him about them as Wei Wuxian is to hear about Hanguang-jun again.

Lan Wangji hesitated, which meant yes.

“One of the Wens?” Nie Huaisang’s brother asked, and his voice had dropped down to a forbidding register.

Lan Wangji straightened his back. “I will not apologize for associating with a child of two,” he said icily. “Regardless of his surname –”

“A child of two?!” Lan Qiren exclaimed, horrified, and even Nie Mingjue’s seeming ever-present anger broke for a moment, leaving him looking aghast. “In the Burial Mounds?!”

“Oh, woe is us,” Nie Huaisang said, delighted by this turn of events, which proved to be far more entertaining than what he thought was in store for him on a visit to the Cloud Recesses. “Clearly we’ll all have to go to see for ourselves, right? Right?”

In which Nie Huaisang is bored and, after an argument, he and his Da-ge go to visit the Lans.

He watches as they shelter under the lifeless trees, sit among the mounds of half buried bodies; there's nothing here but dirt and resentful energy. They stretch their legs, checking in on each other in a low murmur. Wei Ying doesn't seem surprised to see that Lan Wangji is the last person still standing, a pillar of white among the huddled bodies in muddy and stained robes. "Will you tell them where we are?"

Lan Wangji shakes his head. He doesn't know which 'they' Wei Ying means, but it doesn't matter. "I will be back."

"You shouldn't if you know what's good for you." Wei Ying reluctantly huffs a laugh.

Lan Wangji has not known what is good for him for a long time.

So I really was surprised by the results of the chat that I made but ai obliged. It a fic in working that I came out to looking at aesthetic pictures on Pinterest and be like “How fun it would be to find a fanfic with the vibe of rich child’s mdzs “ and I searched and I didn’t find ( if you know one let it in the comments pls) so I start making mood boards and then start making profiles and I star the story. It about the four five clans been national business and technically ruling China’s market in the following domains

Jiang have hotels and immobility plus water related business (like swimming schools, diving, equipments shops, resorted island etc) and with the add of Yu Ziyuan an equestrian school

Lan have been known for generations for there lawyers and academy (Clod Recesses is a high ranking school who have a very strict code and do a one year experience for high heirs or people that pass there test. Have multiple years and sections one for high school other for college) and they are known for music to but is more a side industry Lan Wangji is the singer one that practice as a job

Nie are known for there gyms and there fabrics and transport ( the fabric ar for different domains who work with heavy materials like metal, furniture, glass, construction etc ) after Nie Huaisang enter the family business they start having openings to the art industry

Jin doesn’t surprise anyone they rule the fashion, jewellery and banking industry’s ( I don’t feel like I need to explain everything just the full gold is still here, everywhere)

Wen for me ar the ones in Hi-Tech ( of course because they want to know anything and invented the best cameras to protect you house just that they use that for gathering informations and they have some dirty work to maybe spy’s or drugs )

The idea of the story is that all the characters we know start as a team, all the parent ar alive (just Nie. Huaisang and Nie Mingjiue are having just there dad but that in a plot surprise. It stars with all the main cast coming back to China after living aboard for some years and becoming known in the world by there talents and work , they were not been home for so long because off some scandals that hit the families very hard and some death threats but new they are back and they know how did it and they would make them pay. The story will have a lot of presents and past like the original series to show how we end up here.

The Jiang, Lan, Nie, and Jin clans—all of them had been forced to retreat, to leave their territories, their families, their legacy. That was the cost of survival. The weight of the past still hung over him, tethered to every step of his journey since. He had built his empire abroad, carving a name for himself that echoed in places far removed from Yunmeng, Lanling, and Gusu. Yet, no matter how far he went or how high he climbed, those lands still lingered in his mind. They were a part of him, as vital and immutable as the blood that ran through his veins.

Home. The word felt foreign, yet it also wrapped itself around his heart, pulling tight. The Jiang clan compound awaited him, alive with the presence of those who mattered most: Yu Ziyuan, his fiercely protective aunt; Jiang Fengmian, his calm and steady uncle; Jiang Cheng, his sharp-tongued but unwaveringly loyal brother; and Jiang Yanli, the sister whose warmth had always been his safe haven. His parents, Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren, would also be there—a thought that both comforted and unsettled him. They had been constants in his life, even in their distance, and the idea of facing them now, after all these years, made his chest tighten. Would they look at him and see the son they had raised or the man he had become?

The seatbelt light flickered on as the pilot’s voice crackled overhead, announcing their descent. Wei Wuxian straightened, shaking off the haze of his thoughts. He wasn’t the only one coming back. The other heirs would arrive as well, their paths converging once more in the city that had seen their highest triumphs and deepest betrayals. The thought sent a shiver through him, his mind turning to the names etched into his memory. Lan Xichen, steadfast and gentle, yet as unyielding as the mountains his family hailed from. Nie Mingjue, a tower of strength, his presence always commanding. Jin Zixuan, his pride often mistaken for arrogance but carrying a heart of gold. And, of course, Lan Wangji.

Wei Wuxian closed his eyes briefly, willing himself to stay composed, but the image of Lan Wangji surfaced nonetheless. Those golden eyes, so calm and piercing, had haunted him for years. Their last meeting had been in Los Angeles, at a theater where Lan Wangji had performed a guqin piece that silenced the entire audience with its beauty. They had spent a single night together after that, and though no promises had been made, the memory of that evening still sent a shiver down Wei Wuxian’s spine. The feel of Lan Wangji’s touch, the way he looked in the soft light of the morning, and the empty space beside him when Wei Wuxian woke up—all of it lingered, unresolved and ever-present. Even now, as he stared out at the glowing horizon, the melody of that last performance played in his mind. It was Lan Wangji’s newest creation, one he hadn’t been able to stop listening to since.

The plane touched down smoothly, the sudden weight of the ground beneath them snapping Wei Wuxian out of his reverie. He drummed his fingers lightly against the armrest, his mind circling back to the years he had spent away. He hadn’t wanted to leave, not truly, but the scandal had left them no choice. They were too young, too vulnerable, to face the forces that had come for them. The heirs had scattered, each determined to forge their own path and return stronger. Now, that time had come.

As the plane taxied to the gate, the familiar tension of Yunmeng began to settle over him. It wasn’t just the physical landscape he was returning to, but the legacy he had once thought he’d lost forever. The fight ahead would be long and grueling, but for the first time in years, he felt the faintest spark of hope. They were all coming back, every last one of them. Together, they would reclaim what was taken.

The soft hiss of the cabin door opening pulled Wei Wuxian from his thoughts. He rose smoothly, adjusting the cuff of his tailored black jacket before descending the stairs. The outfit—a sharp, dark jacket that cut just below his waist and a loose shirt that dipped low enough to catch the eye—was intentional. It wasn’t just style; it was armor. His boots clicked against the metal steps as he reached the tarmac, his sharp gaze scanning the floodlit surroundings. The humid air of Yunmeng greeted him, wrapping around him like a phantom of his childhood.

He pulled a pair of sleek headphones from his bag, sliding them over his ears as he walked toward the waiting car. Lan Wangji’s melody began to play, its deliberate notes threading through his thoughts as he allowed himself a moment of quiet. The car door opened with a soft click, the driver bowing respectfully before stepping aside. Wei Wuxian slid into the cool leather interior, resting his head against the window as the city lights blurred past.

For now, the emotions could wait. His family was waiting, the future was waiting, and somewhere in the distance, the fight to reclaim everything they had lost was waiting too.

hello, hope you’re doing well :D! i’ve been obsessing over all of your art and hcs of the mdzs older gen and i was wondering what your thought process of the names you chose for them were because they’re really cool!! like i was thinking how yixi’s name is probably referencing that she came from tibet or how qhj’s courtesy name is maybe referencing his position as heir then later sect leader, like him inheriting the responsibility of leading the lan clan, and maybe the night character is in reference to his quiet personality but also his future loneliness in seclusion? or maybe im just looking into it too deeply (Ｔ▽Ｔ)

hello hello!! i've been very busy, this new years is starting off with lots of farewells on my end & promises to see friends as they settle in to their lives, i hope you are well & i hope you've had a good holiday & will have a good year.

WAH you're too sweet 😭 i'm gonna be honest, a Lot of my thought process when Naming characters in general has been:

• "follow the naming process of mxtx," which means you can bet your butt i've been Carding through Tang Dynasty poetry for Months • making Absolute Sure that None of the names i settle on are homonyms for anything with a double-meaning such as: modern swear words, innuendos, or just anything in general that would make them look like a clown • do NOT be Airplane (Shang Qinghua) when naming characters- which in essence if you haven't read svsss means do Not give characters names that spell out the core of their origins. no "risen from the frozen river" names, "don't be too on-the-nose i'm Begging you do research" @ me • do your absolute Best not to choose characters with a ridiculous amount of strokes Especially for given names (a rule i've struggled to actually live by) • do your Best to not have too many overlapping characters that Canon names use • sparingly looking at the tao te ching because i'm too scared of being culturally insensitive to nitpick a name from any pinyin i might come across

i won't claim ever to be a native chinese speaker: i have enjoyed the incentive to learn characters that are the building blocks to actual words that reading mxtx's works (& subsequently other cnovels) have given me, but it is not a culture i was raised in and it is not a language i read fluently. can't speak mandarin or cantonese or suzhounese or any other dialect and have been blessed with multiple friends who do and have done their best to help steer me in the right direction. all that being said, here's some dumb facts with the names:

• regarding the last-most point, i've picked ONE name from the tao te ching. i'm glad you enjoy Chengye/承夜's name but i've deliberated over it too long and have come to the conclusion that it Will be changed. taking inspiration from qiren's name, there needs to be a verb in there paired with something abstract but innately Human & i've found a passage in the tao that i Really liked that i feel alluded to my own characterization of him had the phrase Yǒuqíng/有情 which is Just as abstract and ridiculous as Chengye (which i cannot remember where i pulled that name from), but comes with the added bonus of being from the Adjustment of Controversies. to Have affections but understand where they should be going or how they should be distributed, to question why a person favors One thing over Another despite the inevitable conclusion that All of it is working towards an inevitability completely out of a person's control, it all feels just absolutely peachy to thrust that onto qingheng-jun when he couldn't in his lifetime maintain the favor between his family & his wife. plus Wangji's name being tao-derrivative made me feel i needed at least one of the prev gen in this boat with their successors. i've studied the tao in a scholarly setting Once for a semester, and Once more for a week or two on my own time so Please do Not take my word as any level of expertise i'm begging you. • I Do remember when picking out a name for Qingheng-jun, coming across a name that in essence meant "Bear the Night" felt a little too on-the-nose. there was no double meaning though i tried applying one. he's a Leader, he's a Cultivator, it's Expected of him to bear this and bear it as if it weren't a burden. and the more i thought/think about it, the less it made sense especially when All cultivators are expected to soldier through the same conditions, yanno? • Cangse-Sanren is the only girl i've headcanon'd so-far with a courtesy name! and i Really Really wanted it to be something to do with celestial bodies Exclusively because Xiao Xingchen has the Most celestial name on this show outside of Lan Xichen but he doesn't count in my head. i also wanted it to have Anything to do with the moon because Xiao Xingchen's name has a good chunk of sun radicals in there, but also Moonbeam is what you'd call a fairy and she's a fairy and i Will Never let that go. the most buckwild batshit fairy you've ever met but a mortal worthy of being a celestial being. her Surname means Wish, so go wishing on the moonbeams because her husband certainly did. • Cangse-Sanren in my headcanons named herself. She was a whimsical child, she named herself something outlandish for her surname, & she was obsessed with the cowherd & weavergirl story as a child so she named herself Liu/浏 with the milky way in mind (here i go breaking my Not Too Many Strokes rule). • tragically Yixi's name was more utilitarian than anything else. i needed something that worked in multiple languages based on my headcanons of origin & with the limited selection i had to work with, 益西 was by & far my favorite. plus the implications of her having value, of being benificial to some far-off location that was as far away from Gusu as you could possibly get, how could i Not see the poetry in that? • Yixi has no surname. Yi is not her surname, her full name is Yixi. where i headcanon her From, surnames weren't particularly commonplace outside of nobility and i don't headcanon her family to be of major importance (though i believe they're relatively self-sustaining). She might be associated with a specific clan her family works under or for & that may come up in the future, but for now it's just Yixi until or unless you think of her as already a married Lan. jury's out on whether the Lan clan would've ever called her Madam Lan tho. • confession: Bu Xin's name was directly inspired by Unchained Love's Bu Xin. different spelling but iirc it's completely a homonym. second confession: i have yet to finish watching Unchained Love please go Easy on me
