Story Prompt 50
In a town shrouded in mystery, an unpredictable force of chaos lurked in the shadows. No one could predict what the insane villain had in store for the unsuspecting residents. Whispers of his crazed laughter echoed through the narrow alleys, sending shivers down the spines of those unlucky enough to hear it.
One day, a curious duo stumbled upon a peculiar scene in the heart of the town. The villain, draped in a cloak of darkness, stood in front of a peculiar machine emitting an eerie hum. The air crackled with an unsettling energy as the pair cautiously approached.
"What have you done, you madman?" shouted one of the duo, a brave soul with a determination to unravel the mystery.
The villain turned to them, his eyes glinting with madness. "Ah, the curious ones have arrived! Witness the brilliance of my creation!" he exclaimed, gesturing towards the peculiar machine.
As the machine hummed louder, reality itself seemed to warp around them. The surroundings twisted and contorted, leaving the duo disoriented. The insane villain cackled uncontrollably.
"You see, my dear interlopers, I've harnessed the power to reshape this mundane world into my own chaotic masterpiece!" he declared, his eyes gleaming with a manic intensity.
The duo, now caught in the midst of the villain's demented plan, exchanged worried glances. They knew they had to put an end to this madness, but the task seemed daunting.
Undeterred, the courageous one spoke up, "Your so-called masterpiece won't stand. We won't let you ruin our town!"
The insane villain chuckled, reveling in the chaos unfolding before him. "Oh, but you see, resistance is futile! Embrace the madness, for I am the architect of your inevitable insanity!"
With that, the villain vanished into the twisted reality he had created, leaving the duo to navigate the surreal landscape.

Me before completing the forest temple: okay I get that ocarina of time is fun and nostalgic for people but it’s a bit of a stretch to call it one of the greatest video games of all time
Me after completing the forest temple: By revealing that Link is not a Kokiri, but a Hylian, the game effectively strips him of his humble origins amongst a group of people that already fail to recognize him in his adult form. Thus, kokiri village instantly becomes a location that is no longer Link’s home in any sense, exacerbated by the fact that the game now loads up in the temple of time instead of Link’s bedroom— he is a stranger in the only place that has ever been familiar to him and he is depressingly reduced to his destiny alone. However, the subsequent introduction of the time travel mechanic, which allows the player to travel from the horrific apocalyptic future back to the idyllic past of Link’s childhood, gives new meaning to the idea of this “destiny”. In effect, Link is not a stock “chosen one”, but a protagonist who consciously decides to fight onwards. Link’s dual existence as a child who knows the grim future and as an adult who was powerless to stop disaster gives a sort of desperation to his character, because while it brings the player relief to revisit the Castle Town that is populated by cheerful villagers instead of lurking zombies, the story can only be progressed through the acknowledgement of reality — the decision to make those seven years pass again. Therefore, both the player and Link as a character must be proactive in their heroism and make the conscious choice to struggle onwards despite the darkness that permeates—
#veesaysthings#ocarina of time#fantasy story: yeah the protagonist can never go home again. Me: OH MY GOD THEY CAN NEVER GO HOME AGAIN#Im dearly sorry for all the Zelda posts#I’m getting my shit rocked by ocarina for real#(no spoilers I literally JUST got to this point in the game)#thank you so much to my friend who is forcing me to play this#I will cry at all the temples though bc I am so awful at puzzles pls I am so dumb

i hope ruby gets a well-that’s-alright-then-style notdeath. on the one hand it will make haters mad because oh no not another companion with an impermanent end (and i like to see haters mad) on the other it would require creativity to depict this in a new way + i love all the implications i love the dark fairytale quality of these companion exits i love my un-undead schrodinger’s women
with the way the legend of ruby sunday is titled… legends aren’t usually told about living people. legends are stories of the bygone past, of an age long since over, fictionalised and overgrown with folklore like barnacles sticking to an abandoned shell. there is such a thing as a living legend, but they’re exceedingly rare. the unmistakeable raven’s call in the 73 yards teaser, the trailer’s cut to fifteen crying alone after promising to cherry he’d protect her daughter… the foreshadowing is clear as day…
and yet. there’s one massive HOWEVER. ruby appears in s15: millie’s been spotted on set filming it. which leads me to believe — the doctor isn’t one to take the time travel route and revisit companions that in his future are genuinely dead. that would hurt too much, it would cause unnecessary trauma and could break the timeline. that must mean ruby stays alive in some way. ish. she’s alive and a legend and a mystery. girl-ballad girl-song girl-paradox
here she is, fading out.
p.s.: thesis statement on moffatgirls from the tags i left on somebody else’s post about charley pollard.. well it belongs here since it’s basically the semiotic hurricane swirling around ruby at the moment :)
#on a personal level what interests me about these characters is precisely what gets them labeled as being subject to#misogynistic writing by pop-feminist video-essayists. as an autistic girl* (*ish) however; i find female characters that#aren’t quite ‘normal people’; women who represent an idea or concept or are a puzzle to be solved or a manic pixie dream girl to be#more and in a way far more interesting than a girl-next-door-type universally relatable protagonist#they make for more nuanced stories with more symbolism and more layers of interpretation usually. why should there be realism in a#fantastical narrative? similarly i like characters that are haunting the narrative or dead before it began (big locked tomb fan if you#didn’t know) and like. not to be tvtropes but the lost lenore archetype. dead woman who spurs the hero on to recklessness or revenge.#i identify with that dead girl. the laura palmers of the world. set the story in motion without#necessarily having agency. maybe it’s something to do with my#constant background radiation of passive suicidality. in a fun whimsical way :) i would never kill myself but i don’t want to be a real#person. i want to be objectified but not necessarily in a k*nky s*xual way (that too) in a princess in a tower way#the ultimate femme fantasy innit? there’s something about it. hashtag problematic hashtag conforming to gender roles#10000 tags be upon ye#ruby sunday#millie gibson#doctor who#dw#steven moffat#clara oswald#fifteen#fifteenth doctor#twelveclara#amy pond#charley pollard#river song#donna noble#ncuti gatwa#doctor who meta#jamie.txt#haunting

I've finally watched Fate: The Winx Saga and... wow.
#not a good wow#a puzzled wow#a “wow” they wasted potential#and “wow” this structure is a mess#and “wow” what was even the intention with some of this?#it's got it's MOMENTS#there ARE things I like#but JEEZ#esp bloom as the protagonist? like honey those are all the wrong choices for not even the right reasons.#i'm all for heroes being flawed but you're not flawed - you're just stupid#i can tell that this series probably has very good fanfic though

August 2024 Update and Other Mystery Games
These past few weeks I’ve gotten so much done! A few more puzzles are coded, a lot of the logic is setup and another song is written. Things are going pretty good, but my brain is fried. Here’s a sneak peak at one of the puzzles in the game: It’s been a challenge to make this puzzle hard enough to be a challenge, but not so hard that it’s frustrating. I think I’ve gotten a balance in there.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to let you know about a few other mystery games that some friends are developing right now! You may have seen the game announcement for Penelope Pendrick and the Art of Deceit. If you haven't go over and wishlist it on Steam. My developer friend Julia has been hard at work on this game for years and she's excited to share this game with you.
A few other mystery games in the works are Super Spy Academy, What Was Found at Raven Hill and Amelia Darnell.
It's a good time to be a mystery game lover right now. All of these developers are putting a great deal of love into these games so keep an eye out!

there's this kind of youtuber i lowkey really hate who aren't overt bigots or anything but just do this thing where they seem to try stupidly hard to look for reasons to hate media that just so happens to have a lot of marginalised rep in it. especially if it has a thematic point that would involve acknowledging politics
#my favourite example of that (as in i actually find it funny not it annoys me)#is cinemasins complaining the train in snowpiercer and the guy who wants the protagonist's eyes in get out don't make sense#like. they don't have to be explained in the story the point is they're a commentary on socio economic injustices and racism#stories aren't logic puzzles they're parables and if you read them as being logic puzzles you're doing it wrong#and spoiling a lot of really profound media for yourself#having said that the youtubers i hate most are reactionary cunts like nerdrotic critical drinker or turkey tom#they should be punched every time they upload until they fuck off#and the most annoying kind of youtubers (not hatable but annoying) are the ones who try to argue that mainstream media#which is trying to be diverse and progressive is Bad Actually (verilybitchie is awful for that and she doesn't like pan people#so that put me off her pretty quickly which is a shame bc some of her videos and topics are interesting)

One thing that is difficult about writing historical fiction is when you’ve set your story up in the same time frame as major historical events, which you KNOW would be on your characters’ radar yet they don’t impact the plot. What is too much? What is too little?
#writing#it’s hard like if I just brush over it completely it’s like huh? did you forget this major event that some of these characters would know#and would almost certainly have feelings about#or if you only mention it in passing it’s doing a disservice to the significance of this event#it’s just not part of the story#in the case I’m working with it’s a bit understandable because it’s still very early into the event but#this shit is going to be on their minds and if they themselves never impacted it will likely impact people they know#some of them could kind of ignore it but they are also in proximity to two characters who I’m certain won’t be able to ignore it#but because it’s so early I can maybe get away with mentioning it only in passing#like they don’t know how bad shit will get because it’s only the beginning and they’re naive early 20-somethings#sometimes it’s easy and seemless to incorporate historical events#my other historical story it’s so easy to mix Word War 2 into the protagonist’s childhood because that’s why her brother is the way he is#because of PTSD from a traumatic event that I’ve literally mapped to real life events that happened because it worked the puzzle pieces fit#they don’t always though#and that’s the issue with this story#also these characters are all dealing with a lot of shit so external events might not really be the biggest thing on their minds#like we need to deal with the pressing shitstorm we’ve chosen to jump headfirst into#tag rambles#none of these characters are the type to stand idly by or at least they aren’t by the end of the story#and it’s also like every one of my 5 protagonists will have shit to say even if it’s not something they personally might have to deal with#because part of being in a small group of the only people who know the full story about something is that it creates a bond#like these are literally their ride or die people#I love them so much#all 5 of them are my pookies#and yes I have also been in a situation where it’s like okay I guess these are my people where we all know too much now lol#and there’s definitely a bonding element to that#like no one else will ever get it in a way some other people do#it’s much less dramatic in my case

oh i understand you, if the protagonist cannot intrigue me within the first two episodes/chapters and cannot charm me within three, then i’m dropping the anime/manga/novel. sometimes if i don’t like the main character but still stay, it’s bc i got into fandoms through fics and they focused on other characters, so i stick for that specific character. but generally speaking, it confuses me when people display hate towards their main characters.
:O Can't believe I missed this ask! Sorry 😅
Anyway, YOU get me. I don't understand why anyone would want to subject themselves to a narrative focused almost entirely on a character for which they harbor such intense dislike, even for a side character or characters that they clearly love. Couldn't be me! For one, I don't engage with media that makes me angry (at least media that isn't supposed to, i.e. typical shounen). Secondly and probably most importantly, I don't get into said media long enough to latch onto or even mildly care about side characters, so this scenario could never come about in the first place.
#kolbie blabs#again not a moral judgment or anything#it's just puzzling to someone like me who - as i said before - favors the protest by default#protagonist lol#edit: i was super sleep deprived here so i basically just reiterated what i said in the first post lol#but my meaning was more idk what enjoyment theyre getting out of a story when they dont care about who the story is about#however people are allowed to engage with media in whatever manner they want#not like i *need* to understand it

glint's such a great foil to gorion's ward. you've got this person leaving their isolated home for the first time, a 20-year-old thrown into an unfamiliar world, then you've got glint. even if half his stories are bullshit, glint's got ten times the life experience they do. sure, gorion's ward can kill a demigod, but do they know how to shop for groceries? would they know where to go if they want to send a letter? they're an obvious mark, has anyone given them tips for not getting pickpocketed? do they know how to tell if someone's lying after a lifetime around good-natured people who effectively raised them? and you know glint knows how to party. gorion's ward did not have time to go to the club. glint would remedy that in a heartbeat.
#plus gorion's ward's life has been dramatically altered by shapeshifters... shapeshifters are associated with glint's patron god...#and he's so non-confrontational while gorion's ward(as an rpg protagonist) has to be confrontational. or else there's no story.#i know people don't like glint but i feel like someone wanted to write him specifically for gorion's ward.#not as a character on his own but as something to balance them out. especially a more pessimistic or anxious gorion's ward.#they fit together like two puzzle pieces. i'm still sad neera and dorn and rasaad made it into the sequel but he didn't.#baldur's gate#bg1

Does anyone have moments when someone is telling you about their real life experiences with relationships or other people and you notice patterns of behaviour you have seen before in literature/media and then you have a sort of Deja vu moment
#I’m doing the opposite of literary analysis#when you talk to me you’re the protagonist maybe sometimes the unreliable narrator in my mind#all the people you know are side characters I’m analyzing through a literary lense somewhat#this is a common occurrence now that most of my closest relationships are long distance#and I’m physically removed from your environment#when you talk about people’s reactions and behaviour I get that feeling “as I’ve seen that before”’#but it’s nit in one specific book or piece of media but scattered throughout media I have consumed#breaking off little pieces of the lives of imagpeopld to make sense of the puzzle of yours#idk how to tag this#musings#life and art#literature analysis

If rubix cube came out any later than it did, there'd surely be an anime about it
#the cubes would all have different powers and would activate when solved#but have secret powers when you made different patterns#there'd be rare specials puzzles too like the pyramids or polar cubes#and legendary ones like the huge thousand piece ones that no one has ever solved apart from the one upstart kid who's the protagonist#rubix cube
