Story Prompt 50
In a town shrouded in mystery, an unpredictable force of chaos lurked in the shadows. No one could predict what the insane villain had in store for the unsuspecting residents. Whispers of his crazed laughter echoed through the narrow alleys, sending shivers down the spines of those unlucky enough to hear it.
One day, a curious duo stumbled upon a peculiar scene in the heart of the town. The villain, draped in a cloak of darkness, stood in front of a peculiar machine emitting an eerie hum. The air crackled with an unsettling energy as the pair cautiously approached.
"What have you done, you madman?" shouted one of the duo, a brave soul with a determination to unravel the mystery.
The villain turned to them, his eyes glinting with madness. "Ah, the curious ones have arrived! Witness the brilliance of my creation!" he exclaimed, gesturing towards the peculiar machine.
As the machine hummed louder, reality itself seemed to warp around them. The surroundings twisted and contorted, leaving the duo disoriented. The insane villain cackled uncontrollably.
"You see, my dear interlopers, I've harnessed the power to reshape this mundane world into my own chaotic masterpiece!" he declared, his eyes gleaming with a manic intensity.
The duo, now caught in the midst of the villain's demented plan, exchanged worried glances. They knew they had to put an end to this madness, but the task seemed daunting.
Undeterred, the courageous one spoke up, "Your so-called masterpiece won't stand. We won't let you ruin our town!"
The insane villain chuckled, reveling in the chaos unfolding before him. "Oh, but you see, resistance is futile! Embrace the madness, for I am the architect of your inevitable insanity!"
With that, the villain vanished into the twisted reality he had created, leaving the duo to navigate the surreal landscape.

Thinking about !Katsuki who has the FATTEST crush on you and is always trying to impress you and/or failing miserably in the process (more or less?).
He'll do things like answering a hard question in math with the smuggest look on his face so that everyone, especially you, knows that he isn't fucking around when it comes to knowing his shit.
!Katsuki who stretches during hero training in a way that he knows makes him look good just because there's a slight chance that you're watching him. And you most certainly are, but he doesn't need that ego boost.
!Katsuki who tells you to 'go to hell' because you asked him if he wanted to go out for lunch with the rest of the group, but in reality he hated that he was the last person to be asked and declined out of pure pettiness.
!Katsuki who found out you enjoyed a certain series and decided to buy all the paperbacks and read them, and then proceeded to "accidentally" leave one of them on his desk when you come over to his dorm so he could see you get excited about liking the same thing.
!Katsuki who woke up earlier than usual on valentines day and got to class before anyone so he could put a bouquet on your desk and an anonymous card that read 'Today is another yesterday, but your smile is a glint of tomorrow.' He praised himself highly on that one.

everyone keeps talking about Jason vs Percy but why isn't ANYONE talking about how powerful they looked when they both used their powers TOGETHER at the same time, side by side, in Mark of Athena? Like Annabeth even got goosebumps watching them cook up such an intense storm from afar. Sparky and Seaweed brain, Power duo smh.

8 Qualities of Fictional Heroes
Tomorrow, my novel "The Double" publishes on Amazon. (Grab your copy here.) The hero of the novel, Eddie Ankin, is my entry into the annals of heroic characters in contemporary fiction. An ex-Marine turned Hollywood stuntman who has to take matters into his own hands to stop a killer. I've always wanted to write a hero. I spent much of my early days in television focused on anti-heroes, so I've longed to see what it took to create a hero in today's world with all its challenges, big and small, professional and personal.
Why do we love to read about heroes?
Best-selling novelist Robert Crais has a pretty good answer. As he writes to his hero, Elvis Cole, in the anthology The Lineup, "you are a metaphor...you represents hope to people...most folks, all we have is ourselves, the transmission drops before Christmas, some dip keys your car, the rent jacks up, and we're left wondering how we're going to make it. That's where you come in."
Pick up Mr. Crais’s latest Elvis Cole novel here:
In contemporary fiction, characters like Jack Reacher, John Corey, or most of John Grisham's lawyers often possess qualities that readers find heroic and entertaining.
I thought about these qualities a lot when writing about my hero, Eddie Ankin, trying to build them into him while following him in his first adventure in "The Double." Read the book and judge for yourself if Eddie is a fictional character worthy of the label: "heroic."
In the meantime, here are 8 qualities that I think make a great fictional hero:
1. Mastery: The characters in the story have an extraordinary ability to develop creative solutions and a deep understanding of their respective fields. They use their expertise to excel in challenging situations and produce remarkable results.
2. Determination: Possessed of an unshakeable desire to succeed, heroic characters forge ahead. No matter the obstacle, they persevere with a ferocity borne from unyielding strength of will. They will not quit until their goal is accomplished. They endure hardships and setbacks but find ways to bounce back, showcasing resilience.
3. Courage: These figures may be confronted with risky or hazardous circumstances and demonstrate bravery in the face of adversity. They stay calm in a crisis. They keep their wits about them even in a dangerous or hostile situation. These figures fight for their cause and are not afraid to risk their lives for it.
4. Strong moral compass: They are often driven by a desire to do what is right. There can be a struggle between upholding a strong moral code and getting the job done. On the one hand, they have a strong moral code that they adhere to even when it comes into conflict with the law. On the other hand, they sometimes find themselves operating outside of the law in order to achieve their goals.
Share
5. Intelligence: They are often portrayed as intelligent and resourceful, able to think critically and solve complex problems.
6. Strength: These characters are no slouches in terms of physicality - they possess great strength, agility, and mastery of combat, giving them a definite edge when facing off against opponents.
7. Wit and charisma: Often, they possess a sharp wit and a sense of humor that adds an element of entertainment to their character. This is an important quality for readers to respond to as it injects a playful dynamic into the story and keeps the narrative lively. Characters with wit are adept at maneuvering their way out of tricky situations. For example, Jack Reacher is renowned for his wry comments. In every book, he dishes out funny lines that keeps readers invested in the story. Similarly, John Corey's dry sense of humor and droll sarcasm act as a counterpoint to his gruff demeanor which keeps readers hooked on every page. These characters have a certain magnetism that captivates readers, making them enjoyable to follow throughout their journeys.
8. Complexity: The protagonists of these stories are usually well-developed with interesting and complex backgrounds that draw readers in. Their struggles and motivations are the very things that make them instantly relatable. Watching how they use those struggles to solve the problems they face is what makes them captivating.
What do you look for in your fictional heroes?

Love your writing! Can I request a hero that likes being controlled by the villain because they get relief from their anxiety/stressful life but they are denying it because they don’t want to admit to being overwhelmed?
"Oh god, you're back."
The villain smirked at that particular greeting and inclined their head in acknowledgement. "Long time no see, hero mine."
Anticipation had the hero's heart drumming double time. They shifted their weight, hold tightening on the battered strap of their rucksack. The street was empty, all curtains conspicuously drawn, but there was nothing actually blocking any exits. They could run. They weren't far from home. They might even make it.
"It's okay," the villain said, tucking their hands into their pockets. "You can try, I won't be offended. I know you prefer pretending that you don't like this. That you don't crave this."
"I don't."
"No?" The villain's tone was soft, but their eyes gleamed in the glow of the lampposts. Their gaze was somewhere between gently mocking and not so gently fond. "You're lucky you lie so pretty. It means I'll let you off with a warning. Just the one, because I've heard you've had a rough week."
The hero swallowed.
The week had been exhausting. Atlas would have buckled beneath the weight of the last week too. Anyone would. Wouldn't they? Maybe that was why, beneath the panic of seeing the villain again, there was a much more terrifying chasm of relief. Dizzy, desperate relief. The kind of longing that left a person brained by it. Dumb.
"You heard about that?" the hero asked, in a small voice, even if it was entirely not the point.
"I'm here, aren't I?"
The hero shuddered, to hear the villain say it so bluntly. Maybe if they hadn't, the hero could pretend - what? That somewhere along the way monstrosity and miracle had blurred together like wet watercolours?
"You could walk away," the hero said.
"I could," the villain agreed, placidly. They didn't move though.
"Would you if I asked you to?"
The villain's head tilted, considering the hero at that.
"Mm, I don't think so," they decided eventually. "Then you'd feel like you had to ask. It goes better when you don't have any choice in this matter, doesn't it?"
"You can't just - you can't say that."
"No?" the villain's lip curled up again. They closed the gap between them, casually confident. "You asked."
"Well, yes - but." The hero didn't have a good way to finish the sentence. Mainly because they should have been horrified. They were horrified! It was only..."You're not supposed to say it." The crack in their voice felt far too much like confession. "It's not right."
"Yeah. I'd say you should stop feeling so guilty about liking it so much, but honestly it's entirely too delicious watching you squirm."
The hero made a choked, incoherent sound in their throat. They took a step back, not remotely surprised when the villain's hand snaked eel-fast around their back.
"Ah, ah," the villain said. "You already had your chance to run. Go easy."
The hero felt the very moment that something switched in the villain's voice, their powers humming a siren song in the hero's bones. They felt their body turn to putty as they blinked at the villain, wide-eyed. Their hands settled comfortably on the villain's chest, not pushing back.
It wasn't...it wasn't exactly that their brain switched off, only that everything in them suddenly refused to fully recognise the danger. And there was danger, they knew that, but...
But for the first time since they'd last seen the villain, the knot in their chest loosened. They didn't feel one small straw or loud noise or well-meaning question away from bursting pitifully into tears.
"Good," the villain murmured. "Just like that. There you are. Deep breaths."
Up close, the villain took a moment to study them properly. The hero let them look. Minutes ago, they might have tried to hide, ashamed by the blatant dark circles under their eyes, by everything that the villain would see, but in that second...
The villain's lips thinned a fraction. "I've been away on business for too long, haven't I? Sorry about that."
"How was business?"
The villain didn't bother answering that question, more concerned with grazing their thumb along the swell of the hero's lip where they'd bitten it raw. Their eyes darkened further.
"You look annoyed," the hero said.
"You could have called me, you know."
"Why would I do that?"
"Why would you-" For a second, it seemed like the villain might say something. Then, they simply sighed, and shook their head, muttering something under their breath. They pivoted, so they were at the hero's side instead, snagging the hero's heavy bag onto their own shoulders.
"Walk." The command hummed through the villain's voice again. "I think we've both had enough of your idiot brain for today. You're done for the week."
Every time the villain let them go, it was harder to force themselves to leave.

Okay consider Bruce Wayne is the very well known bankroller for the Justice League. Batman is still part of the league, but they don’t know he’s Bruce Wayne. So, due to Bruce Wayne being such a well known figure and very obviously connected to the Justice League, that has kinda made him a target for certain people which means the Justice League has decided to assign one of their members to help keep him safe. Insert notorious billionaire fighter Superman becoming the part time bodyguard of Bruce Wayne in this epic superbat romance

Nico, confused: A yogurt?
Jason, kindly: I wanted to make you feel more at home here.
Nico: Why would a yogurt make me feel at home?

Seeing hate on the Percy Jackson series to me is SOOO funny.
‘There’s too much plot armour’ ‘the characters are so two dimensional’ my friends THEYRE BOOKS FOR 12 YEAR OLDS 😭😭😭 ‘they don’t follow Greek mythology at all’ they’re literally FICTION books why would they need to be accurate 😭😭 are we seriously expecting books about demigods and Olympus in manhattan to be 100% accurate to Greek mythology
They are silly fiction books for children of course they’re not complex. I think people forget that 😭😭

"He sits there for another two hours, with Legend cradled tightly in his arms, the lantern glowing in his grasp, a small island of warmth and light in the cold darkness. With nothing but his memories, and the slow, quiet draw of Legend’s breath, to keep him company."
First time sharing my Linked Universe fanart here, after lurking in the fandom for years - I was emboldened to do so by @kikker-oma 's lovely Fan Joy July event. This illustration is for Clearing the Air, a story by Sinnatious which has embedded itself deep into my psyche and refuses to leave. It's genuinely great writing - go read it if you haven't and enjoy heavy angst, wilderness survival, and old men being absolutely, perfectly, 100% fine, thank you very much.
