Here are a few excerpts from Wuthering Heights discussing Heathcliff's race, showing how Brontë left the matter intentionally ambiguous yet still attempted to make it clear that he wasn't white:

[Here Mr. Earnshaw refers to Heathcliff as "it" when introducing him to the Earnshaw family for the first time] "'. . . you must e’en take it as a gift of God; though it’s as dark almost as if it came from the devil.'"

"But Mr. Heathcliff forms a singular contrast to his abode and style of living. He is a dark-skinned gipsy in aspect, in dress and manners a gentleman . . ."

"Something stirred in the porch; and, moving nearer, I distinguished a tall man dressed in dark clothes, with dark face and hair."

"'Black hair and eyes!' mused Linton. 'I can't fancy him. Then I am not like him, am I?' 'Not much,' I answered: not a morsel, I thought, surveying with regret the white complexion and slim frame of my companion . . ."

"'A good heart will help you to a bonny face, my lad," I continued, "if you were a regular black; and a bad one will turn the bonniest into something worse than ugly . . .'"

"'God forbid that he should try!' answered the black villain."

"Heathcliff’s face brightened a moment; then it was overcast afresh, and he sighed. 'But, Nelly, if I knocked him down twenty times, that wouldn’t make him less handsome or me more so. I wish I had light hair and a fair skin, and was dressed and behaved as well, and had a chance of being as rich as he will be!'"

"I declare he is that strange acquisition my late neighbour made, in his journey to Liverpool—a little Lascar, or an American or Spanish castaway."

Watch Catherine come back and go up to Heathcliff and start being snappy, indignant, and overall quite abusive lmao.

Actually have read about a third of Wuthering Heights (or a fourth idk) and I can't believe walking into this I had the perception that this would be a tragic romance when really it's. Like. God. A tragedy. Just abuse after abuse. So much to read into because there are so many characters involved. I haven't even read Canto VI of Limbus but man. Was not expecting Cathy to be. Like that. She's so fucking selfish and self serving, I thought Nelly was missing the point by hating on her but that scene with the slap might as well have slapped me as a reader into realizing "No, she actually is awful!"

Also, I feel so bad about Heathcliff with how he's locked away and abused the way he is. He's a disaster brewing for multiple reasons. So fucking tragic just seeing him the way he is. With things like the "I deserve to be dirty..." and what not. Man. MAN....

Fitz and The Fool:

-They have a romantic friendship that nearly implodes when Fitz is faced with tons of homophobic abuse over rumors about their closeness, and then overhears a conversation between the Fool and someone else, bringing him to confront the Fool and force him to admit the truth that he’s attracted to him. Fitz is high on drugs during this part and freaks out and an absolutely brutal fight ensues. The highlight: the Fools absolute banger confirming that he is not in fact a perpetual virgin like Fitz assumes because “don’t flatter yourself Fitzchivalry; I doubt you would have been worth the wait”

HeathCliff and Cathy:

-Arguably not a breakup since they were not together in an explicitly romantic way, but the breaking of their bond causes literally the whole book to happen. It makes Heathcliff leave, Cathy get sick, Heathcliff come back once she's already married, Heathcliff to come back with the idea of seeing Cathy, killing Hindley (the person who degraded him and made his relationship with Cathy impossible) and then killing himself only rethinking this plan when he saw Cathy was actually happy to see him, which made Edgar jealous. Isabella fell in love with Heathcliff while he visited Cathy. Heathcliff ruined and tortured Hindley while he kept visiting Cathy and tried to charm Isabella to marry her and get his hands on the Lintons property for revenge reasons. Cathy dies. Heathcliff asks her to haunt him. Heathcliff plots his revenge against Hindley and his son, Edgar and his daughter, using Isabella and his own son. He ruins everyone. The plot happens.
