Here are a few excerpts from Wuthering Heights discussing Heathcliff's race, showing how Brontë left the matter intentionally ambiguous yet still attempted to make it clear that he wasn't white:

[Here Mr. Earnshaw refers to Heathcliff as "it" when introducing him to the Earnshaw family for the first time] "'. . . you must e’en take it as a gift of God; though it’s as dark almost as if it came from the devil.'"

"But Mr. Heathcliff forms a singular contrast to his abode and style of living. He is a dark-skinned gipsy in aspect, in dress and manners a gentleman . . ."

"Something stirred in the porch; and, moving nearer, I distinguished a tall man dressed in dark clothes, with dark face and hair."

"'Black hair and eyes!' mused Linton. 'I can't fancy him. Then I am not like him, am I?' 'Not much,' I answered: not a morsel, I thought, surveying with regret the white complexion and slim frame of my companion . . ."

I’m obsessed with Danamy and McWexler for the same reason that I’m obsessed with Cathy and Heathcliff. Here we have two broken, wicked people, too cruel and selfish to ever truly love anyone but themselves, and yet, they love one another to the point of madness. Because the truth is, they are one and the same. They are two halves of one destructive whole, the only person in the entire world who can truly understand the other, fated to leave a path of devastation and ruin in their wake if ever they come together, because that’s who they are. And of course it ends in tragedy, because how could it not? They were too broken and too wicked in all the same ways from the very beginning for this to ever end any other way. There is no version of this story that concludes with a happy ending. Either they are together, and they destroy each other, or they are apart, and they spend the rest of their lives reaching for each other, never able to touch.

Actually have read about a third of Wuthering Heights (or a fourth idk) and I can't believe walking into this I had the perception that this would be a tragic romance when really it's. Like. God. A tragedy. Just abuse after abuse. So much to read into because there are so many characters involved. I haven't even read Canto VI of Limbus but man. Was not expecting Cathy to be. Like that. She's so fucking selfish and self serving, I thought Nelly was missing the point by hating on her but that scene with the slap might as well have slapped me as a reader into realizing "No, she actually is awful!"

Also, I feel so bad about Heathcliff with how he's locked away and abused the way he is. He's a disaster brewing for multiple reasons. So fucking tragic just seeing him the way he is. With things like the "I deserve to be dirty..." and what not. Man. MAN....
