my favorite jegulus fic of the month, you can just tell this is a labor of love from the author. I also really really loved the inclusion of so many different songs from the time period of the fic!

when Regulus is hit with a rogue spell that sends him back to a 6-year-old, Sirius is forced to face their adversities and grow past their animosity.

not only Jegulus but some v good Black Brothers Angst. this fic fits v well in my headcannon of who reg was as a child and I love getting to see Sirius of the "present" interact with little reg of the "past"

Writing Tips:

Write a lot.

Don't worry about mistakes or editing. Just write a lot to get your ideas out. Practice makes better, and writing a lot will help you gain confidence. You don't have to post it anywhere of you don't want to!

2. Try microfics!

Microfics are a great way to practice writing certain ships, or just practice in general. They're also lovely for getting a feel of posting! They're low-pressure and low-commitment, which is lovely!

3. Find people to write with.

Whether it's people online or in person, find people to talk about writing and write with. It's very motivating and helps hold you accountable.

4. Be gentle with yourself!

This is supposed to be fun. Don't beat yourself up or be too hard on yourself.

5. Write down your ideas.

Ideas come at weird times. Write them down, because you'll forget them.

a year of fandom in recs

cutie pie @garagepaperback tagged me in a 2024 fandom wrap up post and so yeah, i'll hop on the sentimental train. i've been inspired by so many things this year and i shall do my best to honour them in the rambling list below!

having previously been an avid lurker, i've thoroughly enjoyed making friends with some truly inspiring people in this fandom. without a doubt this has been a bright, bright spot on my year and im so grateful! you're all so wonderful and i love you and hope you know that.

@kk1smet has been a source of joy and inspiration from the start. my first ever fic (Got Me Started) was inspired by their prompts, and then my first ever fest fic (Mirror, Me) was sparked by their stunning art. THEN they honoured me with my first ever fanart for my fic (To Be Punished). im so blessed to call them a friend!

i can draw a straight line from every single word i've posted on ao3 to the fanworks that inspired them. ive read/seen sooo many wonderful things this year and it's impossible for me to name them all. ive picked out a few below the cut that are directly responsible for lighting a fire in me so strong i had to write that shit down. if you haven't already, please give some of these fanworks a go, they're all top notch.

+ @yiiiiiiiikes25 wrote cruising altitude from the raven cycle fandom and it fucking rocked my world. i am telling you right now, i have never read anything like it. it is an absolute masterclass in craft. every single word is thoughtful and precise. i thought i knew what voice and diction and pov were and how they can be used to tell the story you want to tell but really, i had no idea. yikes has this way of pulling you so deeply into a characters pov that its honestly disorienting to come out of. i fell in love with these random boys from a fandom i'd never read nor cared for, and i keep going back. i don't care if you are drarry monogamous, if you want to experience some of the best this dumb hobby we're all addicted to has to offer, i implore you, go read cruising altitude. go. GO. and then go read the rest of yikes catalogue bc ofc they also do drarry impeccably.

+ @garagepaperback i read this heaven of mud and haven't been the same since. then i read javelin and ive been permanently altered once more. not only is garage directly responsible for exes becoming my all time favourite trope, but the way they explore the deep, long-lasting effects of trauma (in these and all your other fics) is second to none! its incredibly beautiful and impactful and has left such as lasting impression on me. and all that is wrapped up in some of the most poetic and stunning prose ive ever had the pleasure of reading?!?!! get out of here (but also please dont i value our friendship dearly)

+ @mintawasalreadytaken i read All I Want For Kwithmath and then i went on a tear and read most of their Dead Drarry: Do Not Eat series and honestly had the BEST TIME. they write some of the greatest toxic, kinky, fucked up drarry, but somehow make it so i really fucking care about these two idiots, and want the best for them?? minta is so good at hooking you right from the top and then pounding those hooks in deeper and deeper. the end result is that i now cradle toxic drarry in my hands and wont ever let them go (and sometimes I even try writing them)

+ @eleadore's as the plant that never blooms and everything i could ever want helped to shape and sand the edges of the drarry dynamic i love and want to write! el writes some of the hottest, most rewarding, prickly to tender drarry out here. pls run don't walk.

+ @faiell and i shared our drarry fic debuts on ao3 this year and their fic, Purple, absolutely blew me out of the water. it's expertly written, hot as fuck, contains the shifting power dynamics that are at the core of what i love about drarry, and has SUCH A satisfying ending. i was grinning and cackling for about 3-4 business days after reading. (also peep their tumblr to scream at their art) fai, i've said it before and ill say it again, i'll follow you into fire, i really will.

this post is getting far far too long but i cannot end it without also mentioning some (not exhaustive) of the STAND OUT creators i've had the pleasure of experiencing for the first time this year. i'll include a rec (all drarry unless stated otherwise) + whatever unhinged drivel i put in my bookmark for each but it goes without saying that the talent runs deep and id rec multiple creations from these guys if this post wasn't already novel length.

@citrusses' Our Objective Remains Unchanged: THE drarry muggle au. reread a 100x material

@oknowkiss' draco malfoy's substitute murder service: this made me laugh out loud at several points and its only 10k!!!! also draco is simply lovely, i love him so so so so very much i want to be his friend and just listen to him talk and be insane. this whole thing is thoroughly enjoyable.

@mono-chromia's Red Wine Supernova: everything about this is wonderful, the relationship development, the sex, the writing. you'll want draco to step on your face after reading.

@putridpommes' [ART] Step by step (NSFW): sub harry. draco stepping on face. neon and sweat. what more do you need.

Helenish's A Soft Spot For Lost Causes (draco/ron): trauma treated kinda unserious but still seriously. gorgeous dialogue.

corvuscrowned's An Emerald In The Sky: stretched and pulled taut by this story, perfect longing/pining/yearning, heartbreaking and beautiful

peu_a_peu's The Superfluous Man: utterly delightful, hilarious, i want to stay in the feeling this fic gave me forever and ever. never not thinking about flustered yet domestic draco, endless quotes. An mpreg?? WHAT?? it's peu.

@stratigraphywrites' Untouched: this is delicious!!!! the push and pull between draco and harry is expert. extremely extremely hot

@lemonlimelea's we'll start anew: yeah this is wayyyy stunning, gorg writing, long time span capturing all different facets of harry and draco's relationship

day 20 of @hprecfest - a fic with fanart

Heart Like Neon by @lqtraintracks - E, 41k, 2020, with art by @bluebutter-art

Summary: Bored of being The Chosen One, Harry discovers he rather likes sex and becomes a professional. He’s good at it, and part of why is that he can read people. Not minds, not Legilimens, but their whole self, and he can give them what they don’t even know they want. Enter Draco fucking Malfoy, enigma to everyone, including himself. Harry can’t help but want to break into him, to figure him out. And Draco, thinking he’ll fuck Potter on a lark, has no idea what he’s in for.

Excerpt:

He’s not sure if he expected some form of resistance, but that’s not what he gets. Potter blooms against him, his lips parting readily, hot breath exhaled on an aroused sigh. He kisses Draco back, instantly deep and hot and sexual. He lets Draco press him back hard, runs his hands up under Draco’s jumper and onto his bare back. Draco hears a thunk and realises he’s dropped the wine in order to grip Potter by the fabulous arse and tug him closer. Potter breathes a seductive little laugh against Draco’s lips. But there’s no artifice in it. It’s only seductive because it’s so fucking genuine. Draco shuts him up, and Potter hums contentedly into the kiss.

The lift dings their floor, and even then they’re slow to step away. It takes a moment to do anything other than look at Potter’s flushed face, at the swell of his lower lip, the heavy dilation of his eyes. It’s Potter who reaches out quickly to stop the doors from closing on them once more.

But before they step out, Draco has to give voice to this nagging feeling inside. “That thing you do,” he says. “Are you doing it right now?”

Potter looks at him steadily. “No, I’m not.”

Draco nods. “Good. I don’t want you to. Not tonight.”

“I won’t,” Potter says, hand still staying the lift doors, hair dishevelled by Draco’s hand, pulse beating hard beneath his jaw.

Draco snatches up the wine bottle, and they step out into the hall.

This is one of my absolute favourite LQT fics. I always tell the story of the day it posted, when I took my kids on a playdate, and claimed, er, tummy issues, so I could lock myself in the bathroom and finish it! Ah, fandom life. This fic just really hits the spot, every time. It's so well paced, I always think, and Drarry are a brilliant match; Harry really self-assured, Draco faking confidence in a slightly arrogant way, but underneath anxious and uncertain. The sex is obviously super hot, and I love the way each sex scene feels like it really has a purpose in driving the story and the relationship forwards. The ending of this fic is cinematic and romantic, illustrated to chefskiss perfection by one of my favourite artists (and people), @bluebutter-art. Big rec, for both creators!

As a surprise to no one, one of my most favourite soft Dom!Draco ever is the one in @dodgerkedavra's work. Dodger somehow has access to my SOUL and writes stuff that pierces my heart and heals my mind. She just collects all of my favourite tropes, mixes them all up and serves on a silver platter FOR FREE TO ENJOY. I’ll never get over what a gift fanfiction is, really.  

As it happens, Dodger has written SEVERAL soft Dom!Draco fics and I love them all from the bottom of my heart, so I chose one of them for today to gush about <3

“What about the rest?” “The rest of what?” “Once you’d got the pain where you wanted it, who was going to wipe your tears and pet you until you felt better?” Harry can hardly breathe. He tries for a sentence, then settles for a word. “You?” Malfoy opens his arms. Harry tilts into them, not at all gently, and grabs for anything he can reach. Malfoy’s clothes. His waist. Anything. Anything. Malfoy’s arms fold around him, tight enough to keep Harry together. “Yes,” he says into Harry’s hair. “Yes.”

This fic depicts drarry relationship through BDSM somehow so gently, it's WILD. AND the're Curse Breakers. AND partners. What's not to love??

See, my problem is that I have zero ability to write comprehensively about sex so let me just say this - I love when things happen for a reason and there's sex in a story for more than just sex's sake (although that is also enjoyable, ngl xd). And in the dodger!verse it makes PERFECT sense and I AM HERE FOR IT. Except then October comes ’round, like it tends to do every year, and Harry can’t quite shake the sense that he’s…wrong. Off-balance. Everything bothers him. He writes to his solicitor to put Grimmauld Place up for sale three times in the first two weeks and has to write three times to take it back. He knocks over his glass at brunch at the Burrow one Sunday—a matter of, like, three charms maximum. The spilled pumpkin juice is clean and dry in a flick of Molly’s wand, but Harry can’t stop shouting and blaming and throwing a wobbly, so Ron takes him outside under the pretense of looking for gnomes and walks him about the garden until he can breathe. He drops his glasses one morning and steps on them by accident and can’t think of a single spell, can’t think of anything, so he barges into Level Nine and causes a massive scene as he searches bitterly for Hermione, blind and snapping at everyone he comes across, and feels absolutely mad once she’s fixed them.

Harry and his wobblies :') How Ron knows exactly what his friend need, how Harry relies on Hermione :'))))) It’s one more element of the dodger!verse I am the greatest fan of – the Golden Trio being actually there for each other and being supportive best friends. Sounds corny, I know, but somehow Ron and Hermione as friends make more sense to me? IDK. 

“Felt bad,” says Harry instantly, because Draco’s got him in this place where there’s no distance between Harry’s thoughts and his mouth. “Felt—felt—guilty. For being alive when everyone else is dead. And I miss being in school. But not the war. And not the dragons. And I don’t want that bread with the herbs or whatever. Anymore.

It's always the fucking herbs!!!! And there's a surprisingly short distance from unwanted herbs in your meal (fucking parsley, don’t even get me started on that shit) to feeling guilty about being alive, I 100% stan Harry here 

“Er…” He hasn’t been able to relax all day, hasn’t been able to settle, and they’re supposed to be sorting through the heirlooms that have collected at Grimmauld so they can redecorate or something. And now Malfoy’s watching him with a look in his eyes that says he already knows what Harry’s problem is, but he’s having a bit of a teaching moment. “It’s my jeans.” The hole has become too large, slipping off Harry’s knee in a way that pulls threads across his shin, and he can’t bloody stand it. He spends hours one night searching for a specific jumper—green, with a white H on the front—and when Malfoy says he should come to bed and look in the morning, Harry throws an enormous wobbly that ends in him shouting I want my parents to be alive, I can’t find them, I can’t lose this jumper, too.

Well, see, it rarely is about a jumper itself, after all. Mostly it's about finding comfort in controlling what we can. And Dodger provides such beautiful examples of that in her fics <3 

I know it’s supposed to be mostly sexy rec, and the sex is really fucking hot, I just do not have the ability to put that into words. You’re going to have to go and read (or listen!) yourself to find exactly how hot 🔥

Starting with this one because it's fairly recent and I don't think I've shared it here! Malfoy expresses scepticism about Harry's sexual prowess. Harry is having none of it.

Malfoy binds himself with a sex curse. Harry cannot get enough (but would much prefer to keep Malfoy for himself).

Still the filthiest thing I've written imo – it's 21k of smut and I didn't self-censor at all, but I ~think~ I consider it porn with character development rather than pwp. I wrote the whole thing in a daze, which is my favourite way to write when the muses allow – and to my absolute astonishment (I was sure it was going to get hate), it tends to get my favourite comments too. ​‎‎ㅤ

Just a trial run (Drarry, E, 9k)

Potter in his living room was a novelty and Draco could not take his eyes off him. He fixed both of them a drink, handed Potter his Firewhisky, then sat on the sofa. “From Saviour to Auror to whore,” he said. Potter choked on his drink. “Tell me, Potter, how does that happen?” In which Harry wants to get into sex work and Draco would prefer to keep him for himself.

I'm very fond of this fic and this Draco. I wrote it while I was working on KYHOM because I wanted to try a somewhat similar premise with the opposite dynamic, with top Draco and a more submissive Harry. It has both a paid sex kink and alcohol kink, which I have no idea where they came from, and while I've been postponing doing some proper edits on the second chapter, I absolutely loved writing it. ​‎‎ㅤ

Trouble with your tie, Potter? (Drarry, E, 6.7k)

The last thing Harry expects when Slughorn partners him up with Zabini is Malfoy shooting them furious looks throughout the whole class and then unceremoniously snogging Harry in the corridor.

My Erised fic from last year! I was actually working on something else entirely, a much longer fic that fizzled and died on me halfway through. I have a self-imposed rule that the energy of a story has to be right and has to be such that the story drives itself – and, specifically for fic, that if I don't enjoy writing it, there's no point in doing it. So when writing a fic becomes a slog, I just go back and delete mercilessly. It still didn't help in this case though x_x, so I started writing "Trouble with your tie" instead, which was an absolute joy to work on and I'm so happy I did. There are some parts I still think I'll probably rewrite at some point, but I really loved writing H and D's dynamic here. Even though I don't agonise over my prose when I write fic, I am super careful about the energy I'm putting out and especially the feeling I'm leaving the reader with at the end, so I'm really happy they hit the mark in this case. ​‎‎ㅤ

Not very gallant (initial Dronarry but endgame Dron, E, 3.3k)

“He likes it when I hurt him,” Harry tells Ron with a smirk. “And then you come in and soothe him.”

I wanted to include a non-drarry fic so here's a very recent one! I think I probably could have done more with it, but I loved writing Ron in this. Please mind the tags!!! Everything is super undernegotiated!!! It's endgame Dron, but Harry is perfectly fine with it. I should also probably mention that Harry is a bit of an asshole in this fic compared to the way I usually write him, but because I usually write Drarry and wanted this to be endgame Dron, I had to find a way for the dynamic to be in character, hot, and sexually charged, but not in a way that made me ship drarry too much. I'm also usually not good with threesomes or poly relationships because I always feel like someone is left out x_x, so I tried to put my own spin on it. This is what worked for me and I loved writing it! Do not expect considerate behaviour for like... most of it though.

The fic I’d like to rec is A Christmas Miracle by @sleepstxtic (E, 39k)

Draco is a world-renowned Magi-Diagnostician and Harry is a Cursebreaking Healer, both working in St. Mungo's. They're not- quite-friends, not-quite-lovers, who argue at work and have sex on the weekends. And they're both fine with it, thank you very much. But when a mysterious attack in the hospital leaves Draco trapped in a coma, Harry must do all he can to save him. All the while, an inexplicable, deadly, children's illness is spreading through wizarding London. Oh, and there's some Time Magic thrown into the mix.

A Christmas Carol with a Drarry twist.

Though this 25 Days of Drarry fic is set during Christmas, it’s a perfect read for any season. @sleepstxtic (Kat) uses her own wonderful take on A Christmas Carol to weave together a gripping medical thriller with Draco racing against time to save Teddy, after himself going on a journey of self-reflection as he travels through time with his Ghosts of Christmas. The scenes Kat writes for the time-travel are as emotional and gripping as the suspenseful case in the present, as Draco, moved by his eye-opening experience, navigates his duty – and expressing his feelings for Harry. The characters’ (including great OCs) dynamics, personalities – especially Draco’s growth – and dialogues are deliberate, on point, and a delight to read. Plus, Kat gives an especially wonderful snark and demeanour to Draco that are not only reminiscent of her inspiration of House M.D., but is also uniquely him. Of course, Harry too has his own sassy moments thrown in with his softness towards Draco.

Why I especially rec this fic (apart from Kat's brilliant writing that I always love) is that by December 2023, I had been on-and-off and down about a lot of things, including fandom. Though I wasn't sure where I stood then, one thing I knew was that I could always count on Kat’s amazing stories cheering me up. This one came at a time when I appreciated anything to rely on as an escape and a treat, and adding it to my list of subscriptions to daily updating fics last winter was a joy. The anticipation and thrill of following a daily WIP is something else; I eagerly read as the story unfolded each day, especially mulling over what might happen next after each cliffhanger, which Kat is infuriatingly good at. Her story is a wonderful unique blend of concepts and feelings of despair, fear, hope, and love, gelling into a plot that'll definitely have you hooked. Whether you choose to savour a chapter a day in your free time, or treat yourself to a late-night binge, I hope you enjoy unravelling the mysteries of the puzzling illness, what happened to Draco, and his and Harry’s future.

HP Rec Fest 2024

day 28: a fic over 100k

I’ve had a rec for Can't Sit Still by wilteddaisy (E, 193k) sitting in my drafts for so many months now (probably over a year? le gasp!) so when I saw this prompt I did not think twice. I rarely read anything over 50k these days, but I was (still am) so thirsty for some good Draco/Blaise food that I jumped right into a 200k rollercoaster, and what a ride it was! this will be a bit longer than my other posts since I’m using bits of my long-ass drafted rec, so please bear with me:

I’ll preface this by saying “this might not be the right fic for you - and that’s okay!”. yes, the story starts with Draco falling for his straight best friend and getting into an ill-advised but 100% Slytherin “friends with benefits” sort of arrangement with Blaise, who then marries someone else. oh, the devastation 🥲 this is not a sad fic per se, but Draco’s journey is bittersweet all the same. one thing I can promise though, this is most definitely a Drarry romance. there’s this… subtle sweetness and generosity in their dynamics, even before they start fucking, that made my heart skip a beat and go “yes yes yes, this is what I want for them!!!!”

flatmates, powerful Harry, pining galore, found family, hot & intimate smut, a story after my own heart! and once you jump in, it’s impossible to resist the pull of these witty, vibrant and complex characters. as a Blaise slut I was immediately seduced by this peculiar mix of arrogant, tender and nonchalant. it’s so toxic and complicated, I love it. as for post-war Draco, he’s a fascinating figure: snarky and melodramatic but openly soft and vulnerable in a way that caught me off guard, gosh I’m so tender for him. he’s quite similar to Harry in his yearning for physical and emotional connection, and I love how this fic explores the complicated entanglements between loneliness, attraction and dependency. I’m also so weak for a pining! Harry and here he’s dialed to 11: hungry, possessive, touch-starved, soft and infatuated all at once. the slow burn is superb with cinematic sexual tension and emotional catharsis. and don’t get me started on the smut! I could wax poetry about the morning after scene intense, hazy and self-indulgent sex with a starving Harry and a pliant Draco. absolutely breathtaking!

surprisingly, this is also a fun read! the humour is smart, subtle and permeates the dialogue in ways that made me giggle every now and then. this fic also benefits from multiple POVs and a fantastic supporting cast, including Aurors Ron & Pansy and Draco’s hilarious house elves who steal the scene every time they show up. everything comes together in a charming and immersive love story that will tug at your heart strings and make you cheer for Drarry, for Draco, like you’ve never done before. a love letter to all of us who have fallen in love with someone who couldn’t make us happy and had to embrace the grief of letting go, learn how to remake ourselves, and take a leap of faith to let someone new in. give this story a chance and find yourself falling in love with your OTP all over again 💜

I firmly believe that every fandom should have a fic that the whole fandom knows that takes place in-universe.

Jaskier is settled into his new life in Kaer Morhen, married to the feared White Wolf, Geralt of Rivia, and an unexpected gift is presented to the couple in the first few months of their marriage.

Summary: Thorin's adad was taking him fishing when he was a young dwarf.

It starts with Thorin and hi sadad and ends with Frodo and his own adad.

Summary: Pippin is a young hobbit, not even an adult, alone in the world of men with orcs at Gondor's walls.

He watches as brave oy. ung Farmir marches out hoping ot earn his father's love as he is ordered to sing. To sing for this man when those he loves most are fighting against evil.

He has never felt as small as he does in that moment and all he wants is to go home, Merry, Frodo and Sam in tow.

Summary: Bilbo is running from Smaug, the dragon that wants to burn him alive when he is suddenly stopped by Thorin's sword pointing right at his chest.

Apparently I do recs now: Borrowed Time (Dronarry)

I've never wrote a fic recommendation before but the more I read the more I feel that screaming in the comments and leaving kudos is not enough. So, here's my first rec and it couldn't be more fitting the fact that is from @the-starryknight, the first person that welcomed me into this fandom two years ago and made me feel at home. So here we go:

Harry finds himself in quite a dire situation, waking up in the wrong bed and in the arms of his best friend's lover. From there is a wonderful trip and, even when the tag says #PlotWhatPlot, I believe that there is a plot in the way Harry gets from a panic attack to extremely horny to 'I guess I could get used to this'. If you like fun, soft and sexy fanfics, this is your cup of tea.

This fic is part of the @dronarryfest and before it, I didn't know I could like Ron. I'm a Drarry girl, most specifically a Draco girl, but this fest has made me want to jump into Ron's lap and purr like a cat. The established Dron (is it Dron? I'm new here, so I don't know what I'm supposed to be calling RonxDraco, sorry) is something I've realized I enjoy very much and if you read this, you would too. In such a small amount of words, Starry portrays a wholesome, spicy, and tender relationship between those two. The cheeky way in which they drag horny overthinking Harry into their hands is amusing. The way Starry portrays the duality of Draco, soft and caring with Ron, and teasing and bickering with Harry is amazing, giving our beloved slytherin a dimension I always crave in his characterization. Harry is a panicking horny mess and who can blame him for that. And finally, Ron, cheeky bold Ron who's sure about himself and what he wants. I want a Ron, I need a Ron, and the way is written here is spot on. So, folks, go read it and let me know what you think about it. Is a short, well-written piece with amazing witty comments that I assure would leave you with a big smile on your face.
