So, are Machete and Vasco both from Naples? As Italian, I can now imagine them talking with some kind of accent :)

Machete is originally from Sicily! But he hasn't been there since he was little. Vasco's family is from Florence.

Vasco's Tuscan accent is deeply rooted and clearly noticeable, but Machete is a lot harder to pin down. He strives to sound as impersonal and formal as possible, which renders his form of speech kind of stiff and flavorless. He's always been reasonably good at absorbing languages though, so I'd like to say that he can communicate in several of the major Italian dialects/languages if necessary. In work matters he readily switches to ecclesiastical Latin.

Maybe his southern origins show up more clearly whenever he's off-duty and his mask of soulless professionalism is a little looser or something.

This came to me earlier, and now I am utterly obsessed: While it was clear to me that Odysseus stabbing Poseidon wasn't any kind of Vengeance, there was one act of Vengeance after all, even if inadvertent—it was Odysseus disproving Poseidon's "Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves" belief right in front of his very eyes. With him as the subject, even.

Think about it—the fact that Poseidon remained ruthless and insisted on punishing Odysseus was the only reason he got stabbed repeatedly. If Poseidon had been merciful, if he had accepted Odysseus' offer of forgiveness, he would've been fine. His own ruthlessness backfired so hard on him this time that I am sincerely hoping it haunts him forever.

I am actually utterly obsessed with Poseidon thinking back to Odysseus "Maybe you could learn to forgive?" on a daily, no an hourly basis. I cannot and will not lie to you that is unironically my favorite moment in the whole Vengeance saga just because of what it says about both the characters—about Odysseus for offering and Poseidon for declining (and also because Odysseus sings it in Poseidon's own motif which is just absolutely brilliant.) And this makes me love it even more.

Poseidon was going to decline, we all know that. I don't think anyone watching—even Odysseus, probably—expected him to accept. But then I'm picturing him lying there, bleeding into the stone, and, against his will, wondering whether maybe he should have. Maybe if he had, he wouldn't be in pain. Maybe if he had not killed Odysseus' fleet ten years ago, he wouldn't be in pain either. Maybe this one time ruthlessness wasn't mercy upon himself—maybe this time, his one grand belief was wrong. Maybe ... it was always wrong.

Obviously, he would never admit to these thoughts, he would slap himself for having them one second later. But I simply need this self-proclaimed god of ruthlessness to be utterly haunted by that and question whether he made the right choice or no—whether he's even lived by the correct philosophy all his immortal life—and no matter what, be too stubborn to admit he was wrong.

He's trying to pretend like nothing changed, but the thoughts still remain. They pester him. They won't leave him alone. Especially every time someone—anyone—is kind to him for whatever reason, they come crashing back into him and they won't leave.

"What if my own ruthlessness hurt me that time?"

"What if ruthlessness isn't mercy upon ourselves after all?"

"What if I'm wrong?"

"What if I have always been wrong?"

The most dreadful thoughts imaginable to a god as proud and stubborn and old as Poseidon, but they're there now and he can't do anything about them. You all don't understand how much I NEED this god to jolt up in his bed at 3 am after having a dream or nightmare about something related to one of his many ruthless deeds (maybe even sinking Odysseus' fleet) and go "BUT WHAT IF I HAD LEARNED TO FORGIVE?? WHAT IF I STILL COULD??" only to immediately slap himself for it because that's absolutely ridiculous.

He is left to watch this belief shatter before his very eyes as he's clinging to the remains of it desperately, trying to keep it all from crumbling. Not because he genuinely believes he's right anymore, but because he simply cannot imagine ... does not know how to live by any other philosophy.

No matter whether it's objectively correct or not, it's the very thing that defines him. The thing he's known for. He has built his entire image around this, he cannot give it up no matter what ... at least not quickly or without help.

But as much he would seek to deny it, his core belief has now been proven wrong; he has actually lived through an instance where it was wrong, and he can do nothing to erase those memories or conclusions from his mind no matter how much he yearns to go back to simpler times.

And that was the real Vengeance, guys—possibly the biggest, most painful existential crisis of Poseidon's immortal life. I rest my case.

Although before I disappear back into the void I simply must give a shout out to @o3o-lapd-o3o (this came to me during a conversation in one of their comment sections for the glorious Friends In Higher Places AU, which is quite possibly my favorite piece of EPIC fan content that exists ...)

#the way they both cling to their families while in distress #their families are their most cherished people that they somehow can't reach #Hürrem has literally lost them long ago #while Ibrahim has reunited with them and has placed them close to him due to his own love for them and his position in the castle #but it's precisely that same position that distances him from them and *will* distance him from them even *more* down the line #the reactions here also reveal how Hürrem and Ibrahim view death #Hürrem embraces it because she's lost so much already #they always want to separate her from the family she has and the family she's built in some way #and it's like they succeeded here - it has already happened - she's taken from Süleiman the only other person she could latch onto and from #her child she was going to have from SS that would show that she was actually going to keep on that she can't be separated from her family #*this time* not so easily but it's over it's done it seems so let her go to her mother and father at least let her return to them #let her reunite with them that's all she can have after she's already dead #after she's failed and the evil in the palace has seemingly taken over - in her E01 dream it was *they* who made her push forward #in order to commemorate them in the first place; she doesn't mention her sister tho even though she was there in the dream too #and I think that's because at this point Hürrem searches for protection for *help* and her parental figures can provide that to her #more than anyone else; namely they guided her in her dream mainly her mother so she goes first #it all also goes to show how her latching onto SS is a gradual process as she calls him only later #Ibrahim clings to life as embracing death would indeed mean losing absolutely everything completely #*fully* separating from his family he returned to found and reunited with after he wasn't sure about whether it's even possible #and what's more he has both his past and current family in front of him in the present; he can't let that go he *won't* let that go #so he urges his father and Niko not to leave him as in not to let him give up to help him in the fight he thinks he can still win #but he doesn't mention his mother namely because she isn't there in that picture she's fully gone and already symbolizes #a more distant past that wounds Ibrahim too much and he comes to want to evade as this ep is soon after #his scandal with Hatice; no wonder she appears in E44 and urges him to go home thus to go back as he wants to move on so badly #more subconsciously than even the usual #magnificent century #muhteşem yüzyıl #muhtesem yuzyil #hurrem sultan #ibrahim pasha

the way im seeing so much hate for agatha all along's finale like....you guys just didn't get it like i did omg. i have a couple things i wouldve done differently (i really expected agatha to be dead dead at the end and get to go see nicky, but upon actually thinking about it i like this better because her story most definitely isn't finished yet and i don't think it was ever supposed to be within this show (plus we're not burying our gays!!! yay!!)) but overall i liked it. i also feel like apparently i was the only one who never thought we would get a happy agatha and rio ending? it always felt like their story was leaning more towards them having to learn to let go of each other. idk i just don't think it was bad enough to warrant the amount of hate im seeing

I'm only about a quarter of the way through A Bachelor's Comedy, but it's already proving worthwhile just for the running joke where a misunderstanding has caused the village to think their new young vicar has a cartoonishly humongous appetite, but no one tells him about it, so he has no clue why everyone is giving him enormous servings of food.

#a bachelor's comedy by j.e. buckrose #it's a very fun book #i love its flavor of comedy #but for some reason i can only read it a few pages at a time so it's slow going #i have a feeling it's a book that will be better on reread #i'll have all the names straight and my imagination will fill in the lack of description #so i'll be better able to sink in and enjoy the ride #the main character is a delightful boy #and i like how it (so far) manages to be a comedy about a clergyman without making fun of religion #he's a sweet boy who's trying his best and just has to deal with the silly foibles of daily life #so much of this is so relatable even a century later and an ocean away

going from the late Roman Republic to 4th century CE Roman Empire but skipping several centuries in-between the two is really creating a lot of 'guy who's only heard of x: wow this sure is giving x!' situations. what do you mean this guy kept gratian's body and didn't even use his head as a prop. you're telling me gratian had a window of opportunity for sole power and didn't go full caligula. TRAGIC. theodosius there's a gap in your life that’s kind of giving cassius. I refuse to read anything covering the 2nd and 3rd centuries, so this will continue

Episode 17: The Double Joy

-Your mother spoke well, one can only find peace in earth. But I'm not sure if it is on earth or in it.

#the quote is a little bit silly but it adquires seriousness when you know everything that comes later #especially because it's hurrem's mother's quote from when she lived in ruthenia. when peace was possible. when she was going to marry leo #and had her future all planned. and there was stability #but the joke is suleyman's. after all becoming part of his family is what brings that ambiguity to the quote for hurrem's story #as it could be argued she never found true peace. at least for the most of her life #but also suleyman speaks in general terms here. so the quote can be extended to all the characters and in this episode of double joy it's #even more significant. because peace it's going to go sooner than later. and the signals of future ibratice problems are already there #and just as the birds are partly symbolic of that temporal peace and joy in love for hurrem the gifts the marriage gets are very important #as well #this episode is just gifts gifts gifts all around #suleyman's necklace for hatice has the tulips of the dynasty and it's something ibrahim himself recognizes could never give her #she says she's always going to have it w her. tho i don't remember seeing it too much in her tbh sdfy #in the other side ibrahim gets a lot of gifts. but the one that reminds him of his origin is his father's ofc. and he says he will always #have it with him as well. and later he gets suleyman's ring [i'm w haticehurrem. this totally looks like a subrahim wedding asfg]#which goes to remind us that he's now officially part of his family as well. he returned but he converted again. and THEN there's the table!#and taking away the politic alliance it could signify. it is venetian. his mother's heritage is there. in all the palace. and in the same #episode hurrem mentioned her mother's saying. the dynasty [or at least the most conservative side represented by ayse] it's unconfortable #the converts are not only winning more power and getting closer to the family. but they're also bringing their cultures & traditions to the #*ba dum tss* table #there's more to the whole return/convert and how it shows in the ibratice palace especially later w the statues but if i ever write about it #it deserves a post of its own ofc [and prolly someone that knows what they're talking about more than me lmao]#noo why did i write so much 😭 i should've done a separate post this is a mess to be under an already long picspam #anyways there's other significant gifts as the clock that musti likes or mahi's lucky charm for selim. and also the ones we already knew:#the ibratice gifts together 💝. and these contrast a lot with the rest because it's something of their own. when the couple was separated #from dynastic or even ibro's family. will they ever find peace again? we'll see it in the next episode [i'm lying]#maybe i should organize this in a post of its own #magnificent century #muhtesem yuzyil #mc1picspam4episode

#[weeping] all the interesting topics are taken and all the trendy theoretical viewpoints are incomprehensible #i know it doesnt have to be good - you just have to graduate - but. sjjsjsjs. my topic is something i've been passionate about for years an #i keep getting depressed thinking about how i might not be able to convince anyone (most importantly the evaluators) that it matters #i'm basically doing [one facet of hugely controversial theme endlessly written about for years] [comparative approach] [unused sources]#but like. so often in history it's like 'well the sources have not been used for a reason and the reason is who gives a shit' sjsjjsjd #i miss when i typed one name in a search engine and based my entire BA thesis on that and it worked somehow KJADJSFKJSJFHSVJ #now i have to go to 5 different archives in 2 different countries and maybe everything was burned/destroyed already lol #also i've been studying for a historiography exam and. so disillusioned with the prospect of a phd. did you know in finland in the 60s one #guy really wanted to work on 17th and 18th century history and because he was the most important professorguy he got like 12 ppl to only #write theses based on that. and cos of his connections those people later filled nearly all history professor positions that existed #like. you CAN go to write a phd on a fun topic but really you should try to be mommy/daddy's special favourite and do everything they ask #and then MAYBE you can get an academic job later jsjsjjd. or you might just waste 6-10 years being their servant and just not get anything #university

Liam is, at first, completely horrified, right? like, oh, dear heavens, he just punched someone! that's not very holy of him! ...but also, Theo is a demon... surely he's just... acting within his angelic duties... to thwart demon wiles... yeah...?

and Theo cannot decide whether to laugh his ass off because he just got an angel to punch someone or start panicking that maybe he's pushed Liam too far and he'll be discoperated or smth. which ofc he won't be bc Liam (as much as he loath to admit it) does not hate Theo, but they are not at the stage in which Theo is certain of that!!

but once Theo gets him back it (dreadfully, in Liam's opinion, and cruelly giddily in Theo's) becomes a Thing.

#oh yeah that's right Liam threw the first punch #Theo talked big game but never actually put his hands on the angel for fear of being smited(? smut? smitten.)#Liam? Liam tried very very hard to talk no game and then came out swinging (literally)#and Theo was absolutely overjoyed to take advantage of that #they both have caused their fair share of bloody noses #only one has to hide it and the other gets to revel in tempting an angel to such a petty violence #at first it starts off as Theo egging Liam into fights so he can sock the stupid angel #but when Liam starts getting attention from Upstairs after a few centuries of this back and forth they've got going on #Theo quickly tries to spin it into something positive for the both of them (thinking of 6x16. you are too. we all are)#forces him to realize he in fact does not want to lose his only... whatever Liam is to him #I think Liam would warm up to Theo first even if he will not say it #Liam fell first Theo fell harder blah blah blah such and such and the likes #being creative is exhausting sheeesh can someone make my au for me LOL #anyways this was another exercise in “I wanted to draw this but the drawing was refusing to happen so here it is in words instead”#thiam #theo raeken #liam dunbar #teen wolf #good omens #so sorry go people but I need to find this later and it IS a go crossover au so... Hatice will distance #more and more from that role later on until lbrahim starts to outright abandon this whole 'return to the past' idea with Hatice and #search for it through Nigar instead. but yeah anyway I feel these two scenes are the perfect encapsulation of how complicated #the past is for lbrahim; he avoids remembering it because it *hurts* to remember both because why would he remember it when he already has #an established future and because deep down he resents what he's become and established as that isn't ever permanent and he's lost all else #*himself* most of all as who is a person without his roots? he wants to forget them but can't ever do it so what's left is replacing them #*all of them*; when he finds Hatice too he wants to have *both* her and Süleiman and SS marrying Hatice off directly challanges that want #up to that point he believed in the possibility of their love more than Hatice did; now? he seems as lost as she is not knowing what to do #the only way not to lose either of them is accepting Süleiman's order convincing himself that this is how it should be no matter how much #that hurts and would bury him even deeper; he can't bear it so he searches for a solution - and when he sees Rhodes sea? it hits him #it hits him how low he's actually sunk through the losses and if he can't “fully* replace the past he'll *fully* return to the past letting #*everything else* once hidden out as well. not to mention how right before he left to Parga he was brought to fear for his literal death #and then he is given more power that also brings some uncertainty with it and that likely scared him cementing his departure for Parga #directly following Piri Pasha's advice to let power go as it won't let *you* go #(btw a big contrast between S01 and S03 Ibrahim can be drawn in his relationship with Piri Pasha and his relationship with Ebusuud)#magnificent century #muhteşem yüzyıl #muhtesem yuzyil #ibrahim pasha #(sorry for the disorganized tags but if I kept it like it was I would've exceeded the limit before I even finished 😅)#(just Ibrahim and Hatice in general are people who latch onto each other to get over their losses and ache for peace amidst their turbulent #lives and positions and that's what keeps them close and will later too)
