btw did you ever get around to watching revolutionary girl utena? i haven't seen it fully but i know there's some sensitive content in it. i meant to warn you earlier i'm sorry ;-;
i feel like qbbh and anthy are super similar except qbbh is a little less passive a more outwardly malicious at times. i feel like etoiles is like utena too but i'm not a reliable source. i think the duelist and rose bride aesthetics fit sweetduo well tho!
I have!! I'm still on episode 6 because I've been falling asleep way earlier out of random and in the morning on weekends I usually do other stuff, but I so far have enjoyed it a lot <33 And yeah, they don't fit the roles of Anthy and Utena's characters but the roles that they (the characters) play in (duelist and rose bride) certainly fit Bad and Etoiles way better!! It's such an interesting trope but it still is super cool and ahhhhh <3333 I just adore it <3333
#of course no storyline of a character will fit anothers but twisting the story but keeping main parts in like au fics or drawings are -#always so cool <3#and a starhalo revolutionary girl Utena au just sounds amazing <33#ALSO!! Again thank you for recommending the show to me it's a really interesting story to me and I just really enjoy it <33#ask#Ë* ŕŠâŠâ stars ideas

Jewel Satellite
Some season 3 alt Jewel Man storyline notes below cut~
Okay ramble time lol
Originally, Jewel Man returned in a minor role again in S3 in which:Â
Proto Man, Ring Man, Magnet Man and co. cross paths with Jewel Man again and discover he has been upgraded into a full fledged Robot Master
Jewel Man reveals that, in desperation from getting robbed constantly while being a rogue robot, he actually went to the Syndicate for asylum (like what Elec Man suggested in the last chapter)
Centum upgraded Jewel Man with a powerful defensive ability (Jewel Satellite) to protect against any future robberies, which Jewel Man uses against Proto/Ring/Magnet as payback for robbing him back in season 1 lol (and it's super effective)
This wasnât necessarily a more sinister turn for the character, just a nice way to give his story some closure :) and a little karma for those who tend to deserve it
I was initially reluctant to let go of his original arc, but writing his expanded role in Diamond in the Rough and the contrast between Jewel Man and his Curator persona was so much fun that Iâm glad I changed course and he got more development :)
Alternatively--OKAY THIS MOST DEFINITELY DIDNâT GET FAR but prior to that also had a brief beat in early season 2 where I considered going for a SURPRISE TWIST revealing Jewel Man as the ballet dancer who Top Man fell in love with and had also survived the incident but was forced to go on the run:
The idea was to play off The Mega Man in the Moonâs set up of A) Jewel Manâs aversion to crime B) Jewel Man debuting in the first episode the ballet disaster was mentioned
However, this was a bit of a stretch in sooo many ways lol (definitely not planned in his original debut, and a bit ridiculous even for Recut lol), but also:Â
1) It would have undermined the symbolism of Top Man falling in love with an actual human, and also him letting go of his past and moving onÂ
2) It didnât fit Jewel Manâs character, I prefer his background and arc to be fleshed out separately from the ballet drama. But maybe potentially fun AU if you will (in which Jewel Manâs kinda different)?
And finally, another slight alternative on the cutting board floor was a tidbit that the real reason Jewel Man was motivated to quit crime was he got scared straight by Pharaoh Man or Elec Man (and may have actually had small history with either), but that didnât make it through the drafting processes lol
Sorry Jewel Man, guess you were always destined for the Syndicate! Not exactly what you wanted, but could be worse, right? âŚRight?

Year in Review: 2022
Damn what a year. Not his best but definitely one that we will probably look back on as the defining year of the 2020s for the character. Held off on posting this until practically the last minute just to avoid any final surprises for Superman in a year that's been full of them.
Comics
On the comics side this was another great year. PKJ brought the Warworld Saga to an overall satisfying conclusion, wrapping up a storyline that brought the character to one of his lowest points ever at the start, and ended with Superman ascending triumphantly to new levels of power. While he fell short of his stated goal in differentiating Mongul from Darkseid, he did successfully create a Warworld brimming with future storytelling potential, and his Mongul is an entertaining foil for Superman regarding parental influence shaping their character. The post Warworld Saga issues have been solid, and I thought he, Williamson, and Taylor handled the restoration of the secret identity in Action Comics #1050 as best as they could have. Sad to see Federeci go but he gave us some all time great Superman covers and interiors regardless, and there's always a chance he and PKJ might reunite for a Superman BL book.
Mark Waid managed to actually live up to the hype surrounding his return to DC, with his World's Finest series being easily the best thing he's written since Daredevil. Convinced me to care about Magog outside of Kingdom Come for the first time ever, no mean feat. Champions had made me want to keep Waid far, far away from any teen characters ever again, but his writing for Dick, Kara, and the Teen Titans has been shockingly great, to the point calls for Waid to write a Titans book no longer strike me as utterly insane. Dan Mora of course is a key part of the book's success, his visuals being critical to selling the Neo-Silver Age atmosphere, and he managed to do the impossible: make Composite Superman cool. Many artists have tried to modernize that design, Mora finally succeeded by tossing everything out but the basic concept of a Superman/Batman merger. Starting from that simple idea he created a new design that captured everyone's interest.
Tom King stands out as someone who did excellent work with both Superman and Supergirl. His Dark Crisis Superman tie-in was a powerful exploration of Clark regaining the lost years with Jon. Burnham as always was the perfect fit for showing both characters wrestling with deep seeded emotional issues, and plenty of gore filled fisticuffs. Meanwhile he gave Kara her first standalone "classic", which has proved quite popular in trade sales judging both from King's own words and the Amazon sales list that I've seen. Bliquis Evely's art is for Supergirl what Frank Quietly is for Superman, scenes like the one where Supergirl takes red kryptonite to go fight space monsters are permanently seared into my brain due to sheer beauty and spectacle.
Elseworlds wise we had Venditti and Torres giving us the Superman III that never was with Superman '78. An entertaining execution of the standard "Brainiac shows up and tries to bottle Superman/Metropolis" plotline with a few twists that wrapped up this year, it had a few genuinely novel ideas that shaped my perception of Brainiac. Venditti also did a World of Krypton mini that retold the story of Kryptonâs final days. Writing was mediocre but Oemingâs art is beautiful and was enough to keep me from dropping the book. Russel is doing a great job with a "Life Story" for Superman in Space Age, even if I wish he didn't give Batman as many pages as he does. Would buy an Absolute just for all that Allred art regardless, Allred is a vital component in my enjoyment of that series. Over at the Marvelous Competition, Gaiman and Buckingham are at last giving us the resolution to their Miracleman run. Unsurprisingly I am greatly enjoying it and very excited to read where it goes.
Sadly while Clark had a great year, and Kara didn't do bad herself, there were a number of crashes and burns too. Jon and Kon had a horrible year. Not since Byrne has a new Superman been given such a totally broken foundation, with Taylor doing his damndest to smother any potential Jon ever had. At this point I no longer care about Jon until they get him out of Taylor's clutches, which thankfully may be soon judging by his words in some recent interviews. Only bright spot for me regarding Jon was that, terrible as Dark Crisis was, Williamson wrote a really enjoyable and scrappy Jon there that reminded me of why I was interested in him being Superman in the first place. Kon meanwhile was in a garbage event tie-in that did zero of worth with him. 2022 ends as one of Conner's worst years ever easily.
Media
Outside of comics the simplest word to summarize Superman's treatment would be chaotic. Cavill makes his shocking return to the role for film, greeted by joyous fans!... who don't show up for Black Adam which bombs hard. Yet word is released that Man of Steel 2 is in the works, to much anticipation and speculation!... until Gunn and Safran get hired to run DC and promptly cancel MoS2, with Cavill acknowledging that his time wearing the cape has come to an end. Paired with this announcement is word that Gunn is writing the script for a new Superman reboot, and that Coates/Abrams project continues to be worked on as an Elseworld project. Other than Clark being already established as Superman, we know absolutely nothing about the proposed film, which didn't stop meltdowns across the Internet as the Cult finally realized that the Snyderverse was well and truly over. Momoa may be switching to Lobo for the DC cinematic universe, and if they're already talking to him about playing the role, it's a safe bet the first place he'll show up is the new Superman movie. The new DCU "Gunnverse" therefore is betting it's future on Gunn being the first one to succeed since Donner in adapting Superman, which means that the new head of DC is personally invested in ensuring Superman succeeds because it's his job on the line. At least he mentioned on Twitter that he loves Morrison's Superman, and he's been posting Andy Kubert art from Up in the Sky! which is very encouraging to say the least. Going from Snyder to Gunn might end up being the best upgrade Superman has gotten since Donner took over the first movie.
Another live action Superman got his second season this year and it was judged to be a step down from the first. Hoechlin, Tulloch, and Parks all did excellent with what they were given, and the actress playing Parasite tried her best with the flimsy characterization and lines she had to deliver. Jon's actor departed the show and was recast, whether that will cause a change in direction for the character is up in the air.
Animation was the best medium for the Supers outside of comics. Young Justice S4, while retreading old ground regarding Conner being reduced to a weapon, at least treated him better this year than the comics did. He got his happy ending with M'gann, and the show's take on the Zods was the best since Shannon. The season ending on a post credit tease for Kara becoming one of Darkseid's Furies, which is never getting followed up on unless that deal with Amazon bails the show out again, is hilarious. Fucking Weisman chooses to end the series on another big Darkseid tease despite knowing that it wasn't renewed for more seasons! If YJ is finished for good this time then I am at least satisfied with how Conner's story ended, and don't mind if that is the end. Jon and Krypto got entertaining animated movies too with Battle of the Super-Sons and League of Super-Pets, neither of which was anything special, but certainly worth a watch for anyone craving more Superman content. Whether either will see a sequel remains to be seen.
Video game wise we got the first WB cross-property brawler in Multiversus, with Superman in the starting line-up. Found the game fun enough, although it did nothing to diminish my craving for a proper Superman solo game. There were also multiple Superman Easter Eggs in Gotham Knights that referenced him directly or members of his family. Perhaps teases for future DC projects, perhaps not. Not sure I even want WB Montreal to attempt a Superman game after the Wattpad fanfic tier bullshit they submitted for Gotham Knights. Outright Games is also making a fun looking JL: Cosmic Chaos game that has the team dealing with Mxy.
Future
Next year is Superman's 85th and it looks like it will be a milestone anniversary indeed. First up we have PKJ's Action book switching to be more Superfamily focused starting in January, pitting them against a revamped Metallo. He's teased that after the Metallo arc is done, coming up the next arc will feature another revamp of a Superman fan favorite Rogue, a Multiversial Supermen team up is happening, Superman and Constantine may end up working together, and revealed he has ideas for Maxima, Toyman, Mxy, and Bizarro. Then in February Williamson is on a new Superman ongoing with art by Campbell and Dragotta, with a tone aiming to be reminiscent of the STAS cartoon. Finally we have Taylor launching a new Jon mini where he teams up with Val-Zod to stop Ultraman from killing variants of his dad across the Multiverse. Totally on board with PKJ, interested in Williamson, skipping Taylor entirely. Waid is continuing on World's Finest for now, and has teased there may be more spinoffs coming out of that series. I expect something involving Magog to come at some point in the future.
Waid and Yang are also overseeing Lazarus Planet which is an event that will shake up the status quo by giving characters new powers and changing the powersets of those who already have them (such as Jon getting the Electric Blue powerset). Hoping to see Waid and Yang use Clark, Jon, and Kenan in the event.
For upcoming Superman and Super adjacent characters comics that are for sure happening, first we have Steelworks by an unknown creative team (praying it's Pak writing) about John Henry Irons and Natasha working together to reshape Metropolis with their tech. Venditti is already writing a second season of Superman '78, no word on if Torres will return too. Porter's Superboy: Man of Tomorrow mini with Jahnoy Lindsay comes out next year. Premise is very similar to King's Supergirl series but this has been described as Superman meets DBZ which is definitely different tone wise from what King did. Christopher Priest is reuniting with his old Deathstroke team to make a Superman: Lost mini telling what happens when Superman is gone on a mission that's only a little while for everyone else, but centuries for him. Now's the perfect time to let Priest deconstruct Superman while the mainline books do more straightforward storytelling. While not officially announced, Waid and Hitch's Superman: Testament Black Label book is said to be coming out next year per Hitch himself.
More uncertainly there is Mark Millar saying he's having discussions regarding doing a Superman book for DC again, whether that's just typical Millar making a play for attention before announcing another Millarworld project remains to be seen. Geoff Johns may be working on a Legion book, his Flashpoint Beyond series teased a War of the Four Legions story that would doubtlessly result in the Retrobook ousting the Bendisboot from being the "canon" DC future. Would also no doubt restore Clark's childhood ties to the Legion and thus make Secret Origin canon in full. Scott Snyder talked about returning to DC in 2023 or 2024 for Metal 3 which he said before would be Superman focused, although given he described Death Metal as a "Wonder Woman" event he may not have the same definition on what constitutes that as the rest of us.
Live action wise, Gunn has said we will get more information about the coming slate, with Superman being one of the projects we'll learn more about no doubt, in Jan. S&L S3 promises a return to Metropolis, more journalism work for Lois, Intergang making moves, and a new Lex Luthor not played by Cryer complicating the status quo. John Henry Irons should remain a key character given Intergang killed his counterpart on the show's Earth, and is said to be involved going off of the solicit for S3. If the writers acknowledged the feedback on what worked and what didn't with S2 then I think the show can find it's footing again. If not I'll keep watching for as long as the Hoechlin/Tulloch/Parks trio keeps getting cool stuff to do.
Regarding animation we have two movies set in the "Tomorrowverse", Legion of Superheroes which stars Kara joining the titular team, and JL: Warworld which is our first movie following the Tomorrowverse incarnation of the JL. There's also a JL/RWBY movie which will have Superman in it, but having never watched any RWBY myself I plan on skipping it. Against all odds and in total defiance of what you would expect, WB chose to send the new Batman cartoon out to be shopped around and keep the new Superman cartoon for themselves as originally planned. A recent leak - which I won't share here - gave us some details on what the show has planned, and what I read has me eager as hell for MAWS to debut.
Despite all the craziness of the past year I feel incredibly upbeat going into 2023. The uncertainty surrounding Superman's film future has at last been put to rest, his new animated cartoon survived the purges, he's got a comic for everyone either out now or coming soon, the Superfamily and his Rogues are getting focus, and Multiversus broke the trend of all the video game Supermen being evil (although there's still Rocksteady's Suicide Squad game to contend with). Quite the turn around compared to where he was a decade ago, even if it doesn't give me everything I want.

Finished watching the space kitties movie and I got thoughts.
I hate the story of avatar. It doesnât make sense! Compels me tho.
I have said this since I watched it the first time. What I liked about the movie was the world. I guess thatâs the only thing the narrative did for me. (Think that the world was that captivating)
Anyways, I watched this movie last time when I was like 15? 13? However, donât be fooled. By then I had already watched it more than 50 times. 50 of those from a terribly recorded pirated movie my parents bought me. So I know the story inside and out, but I was a kid and holy fuck, I would throw that kid off a cliff anytime. I wanna think my critical thinking has improved since then.
The Pocahontas storyline is absolutely true, in the same amount that it is a fantasy for the main character. New world, new body, new people to make an impression on. Kinda isekai ahahah.
The way things fall in the best course of events to have a dramatic twist later is like patchwork for a story full of holes. I mean, the movie has the âi see youâ and âopen your eyesâ motif all throughout it, but what do they mean inside the story itself?
Connection.
This is so blatant in everything from the way the protagonist gets into the program, the function of everything in the planet, to how the avatars work. To how the protagonist, an alien puppet, becomes a part of their people.
That is the dream of one Jake Sully. His dreams of flying were about fleeing? About being free to do as he pleased? About stopping being âhimselfâ and be something else entirely and yet be seen as who he was?
Itâs funny a story that is about connection relies heavily in the question of âwho are you really?â And runs with the option âI wanna be the second version of myself thatâs completely fakeâ
Escapism.
No wonder I loved this movie when I was young.
To me, the story is one big beautiful dream that has the potential to become a nightmare.
But if we kinda dig deeper into some things, there was so much wasted potential.
- The avatars are created using dna from humans and the kitties. But thereâs really never information that talks about the avatars state when not in use. Itâs taking a big ass leap to say âneural connections is what makes a consciousness a person. How that synapses happens is unique to each individual and can be recreated even in another brainâ. But running with itâŚ
- Avatars are an incredible project if thinking about permanently switching the brain where the connection happens. Imagine that. A new body to transfer your consciousness to. Forever. Blue kitties is just a form you could have.
- Avatars are incapable of forming their own consciousness? Can they wake up from their dream? The movie shows the death of an avatar controller but doesnât show what happens to the avatar. Did it die of natural causes a few days later? Or did it die alongside its controller? Itâs so creepy to think itâs a biological suit.
- That brings me to another thing. The native kitties knew about the puppets and were disgusted by them, butttt, they donât really act logically when the protagonist says âI wanna learnâ because they go ââŚwe wanna learn from you too. Come! Be part of our tribe! :)â like..??? Where is the hostility??? It pops on and off as the story sees fit and thatâs so annoying. (And the trying to upload all of someone into another body? I mean, I would have loved to see the thought process for that)
- Itâs kinda awkward to see the âletâs learn from youâ phase of the story be written like that after so much whump reading. As if the character was trusted from the beginning, he wasnât observed. He was literally pulled to learn from them rather than them learn from him. Itâs such a big loophole and I think if it had been exploited a bit more, giving time and more thought to the protagonist actions to get their trust, it would have been great. Maybe even showing more than a one second attempt to reach by some random kiddo being intercepted by her parents would have been amazing to show this. (Iâm aware that this was supposed to be shown with the other guy, but the lack of solitary moments because the girl was always with him muddled it up)
- People donât blend in into the culture like that and I hate there was no cultural shock shown in order to keep the escapism motif. Like damn, thatâs the best nonverbal way to show someone has to wake up!!!
- Also, the protagonist is supposed to be no much brain only brawn and with a big need to escape his life. So his actions make sense, but in a way, gah, an smarter protagonist would have been cool to see. Our regular guy trope is not so fun when our regular guy is modeled after a mediocre white man.
- No, but the fact that the guyâs personality was a big part of the conflict pisses me off. If you wanna show thereâs an amazing world you wanna and should protect thatâs ~real~ then why cater to this specific dudeâs fantasy? Because he is owed that much? Because he is the protagonist?? His problems got solved too easy to be satisfactory. (Even in the war?!)
Sorry for the word vomiting but if anything this movie has left me with yet another great idea for a puppet whumpee horror story. :D
#avatar james cameron#apologies for the sudden influx of posts about this#please blacklist the first tag if#you donât wanna hear me ramble about it#avatar as a concept is really great#but the execution of the movieâŚ..#I think it would be greater as a series#could make many things have better explanations#anyways#puppet whumpees my beloved#whump#movie essay#jejsjs#I truly mean this was my special interest

Tentative Persona ranking
I have played Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Reload, so I guess I have played the Big Three (rip to Persona and Persona 2). I decided to make some tentative rankings, just for fun.
Beware for spoilers!
Best storyline/storytelling
Persona 4's murder mystery
Persona 5's conspiracy
Persona 3's Dark Hour eradication
Okay, what I mean is the way the story got told, etc. The reason Persona 4 wins is because it just kept throwing in twists and turns that felt like they fit a murder mystery. The game had me hooked and I never knew what the fuck was up. Once I thought I had a lead, something else would fuck it over. Persona 5 is second place because I really, really like the framing device that this is all a flashback till November, and then there's the aftermath of it all. Persona 3 is a story that definitely had some plot twists, but it was told in a very linear way.
Best gameplay experience
Persona 3 for the great UI/HUD, smooth gameplay and QoL
Persona 5 for the great UI/HUD and QoL
Persona 4 for mostly smooth gameplay
Basically, which one is the youngest. Persona 3 did win over Persona 5 since it has a way better pacing. The main issue I had with Persona 5 (and also with 4) was the terrible pacing. Sometimes entire in-game weeks would just be cutscenes and all that. And also, the first 10 hours or so of Persona 5 sucks to play. Persona 4 has some pacing issues, but it's alright. The reason it's still the lowest is because I really miss the QoL and great UI/HUD and that impacted more than the pacing. This is why Persona 3 is on top.
Best theme of the game
Persona 3's meaning of life and death
Persona 5's abuse and rebellion
Persona 4's truth and self-acceptance
This is a hard one, since all are so different and all slap. It's like comparing apples and pears. The concept of death absolutely compells me, so well, here we are, that one's on top. Persona 5 and 4 can switch around, I guess.
Best protagonist
Persona 5's Ren Amamiya
Persona 3's Makoto Yuki
Persona 4's Yu Narukami
Another hard one, because my GOD I love these guys. I chose Ren because I think he has more going for him. He's more than just a self-insert. Same goes for Makoto, of course, since Makoto has an interesting background as well, but I am just enamoured by Ren. Yu is in the game kind of... flat compared to Makoto and Ren. I know a lot of his absolutely amazing characterisation comes from the anime, though, but in-game he is a silent classical hero type. Heck, he didn't even get Shadow confrontation with his awakening.
Best main group
Persona 5's Phantom Thieves
Persona 3's S.E.E.S.
Persona 4's Investigation Team
I like how much the Phantom Thieves can be insufferable. My feelings towards them kept fluctuating and I like that. It makes them feel more real. S.E.E.S. is cool too, and I like how they have different relationships towards each other. Not everyone likes each other, which brings an interesting dynamic. Also, there are good reasons for the distrust and dislike, unlike the Investigation Team. I like all of the IT individually, but as a group I never saw a real click.
Best side characters
Persona 3's S. Links
Persona 5's Confidants
Persona 4's S. Links
This one is kind of rough to rank, since all games have stellar Social Links, and also Social Links that suck ass. I suppose Persona 3 has the least shitty ones. I didn't like the Gourmet King and Kenji's. I didn't finish Hayase and Kaisuke.
For Persona 5, obviously Ohya's story sucked, and I didn't even finish it. I also wasn't to keen on Makoto's and (unpopular opinion) Ann's. Chihaya and Shinya... exist. Sae's was bad. I only didn't finish Futaba's (although I also didn't finish Yusuke and Yoshida on my first playthrough, I am still working through my second).
Persona 4 is last, probably because the Fox, Margaret, Naoto, Teddie, Marie, Shu and Sayoko weren't that great. Rise and Yukiko's were also badly told, although I like the stories. I didn't finish Kou, Ayane, Ai, Eri and Nanako (ouch). I wasn't even able to meet Yumi and I missed out on Daisuke, obviously. So yeah, overall, this one had the most that I didn't really care for.
Best combat outfit design
Persona 5's Phantom Thieves outfits
Persona 3's S.E.E.S outfits
Persona 4's TV glasses
I mean... the Phantom Thieves have a full on transformation. Whereas not every design is, uh, amazing, it is absolutely great and it overshadows a simple jacket or cape like for S.E.E.S. (although those outfits go hard too). The Investigation Team just has glasses.
Best Persona world
Persona 5's Metaverse
Persona 4's TV world
Persona 3's Tartarus
The Metaverse can be anything and that is pretty cool. I like how all Palaces represent someone's twisted desires and how Mementos is the collective cognition. Also, I am trying to limit it to Royal, Golden and Reload here, but in spin-offs like Strikers and Tactica you have Jails and Kingdoms, that show how versatile the Metaverse is. The TV wold als has some variation, since all the individual dungeons are also modelled after a Shadow version of someone. In comparison to those, Tartarus is just meh. It's always the same, but with different Shadows and a different lick of paint.
Best design of the game
Persona 3's blue simplistic design with water elements
Persona 5's red and flashy comic book style
Persona 4's yellow and black TV static
I love red. It's my favourite colour. BUT MAN, the simplistic design of Persona 3 is so gorgeous to look at and it's calming, especially with the water elements. Persona 5 is super loud. I suppose 3 and 5 can switch around, depending on the mood. Persona 4 is very basic, but alas, older game.
Best music
Persona 5's jazz and pop music
Persona 3's lo-fi-ish pop and rap music
Persona 4's J-Pop music
Personally, I like the jazz more than the lo-fi and rap. I am also not the biggest fan of high pitched voices, which you get a lot in J-Pop. That all being said, all of the music absolutely goes hard. Even Persona 4's soundtrack goes off.
Best setting
Persona 5's Tokyo
Persona 3's Tatsumi Port Island
Persona 4's Inaba
To be fair to Persona 4, the whole point of Inaba is that it's a small boring town. And with this ranking, I am basing it on what to do in the overworld. Toyko is so big, there are several spots I never even visited after 100+ hours of gameplay. Tatsumi Port Island is probably the best size. It's never boring, and also not overwhelming.
Best human villain
Persona 5's Maruki
Persona 4's Adachi
Persona 3's Strega
Is there anyone who doesn't like Maruki? His storyline is so compelling and I think the game itself shows that his vision isn't bad. In fact, if you choose his reality, you don't get a bad ending, but just a different true ending (ideal vs. real instead of bad vs. true/good ending). I think that shows how strong Maruki's beliefs are. Adachi, to be honest, was a big left field for me. I genuinely didn't suspect him to be The Culprit. I only picked him in December because I knew his Social Link got added between vanilla and Golden and hmmm, which other Persona storyline got a big change like that? Ah. Akechi. The surprise antagonist of Persona 5. A part of me thinks it was a too big of a surprise, but I guess that is the point. Yu (and I) fell for Adachi's goody persona. And Strega has a compelling backstory, but compared to Adachi and Maruki it's a bit eh. Still good, just not as good. They're classic villains, instead of MACs.
Best godly villain
Persona 3's Nyx
Persona 4's Izanami-no-Okami
Persona 5's Yaldabaoth
Nyx has a lot going for her since she was brilliantly woven into the story before her reveal through Pharos and Ryoji. I actually really, really didn't like the Yaldabaoth reveal. The surprise that this entire conspiracy that it was actually a God's doing felt a bit "die a hero (Shido story) or live too long to become a villain (Yaldabaoth story)" for me, but alas, Persona 5 was my first game and I didn't know that the God stuff is a normal thing in the franchise. Still, since my initial reaction was so negative, it has left a bad taste in my mouth. So yeah, Nyx is great because it was woven into the story, Yaldabaoth sucked because it was too weird. Izanami-no-Okami is slap dab in the middle.
Best Velvet Room attendant
Persona 3's Elizabeth
Persona 5's Carole and Justine/Lavenza
Persona 4's Margaret
I love Lavenza, so she actually got first place when I initially wrote this, but oh man, Elizabeth probably has the most personality out of all the Velvet siblings. She goes absolutely nuts and Lavenza/Carole and Justine and Maragaret cannot hold a candle to her. And yes, again, I try to base this ranking on Royal, Golden and Reload, but Elizabeth's story in Persona 4 Arena ULTIMAX definitely cemented the fact that she is the best.
BONUS
Best relationship with unintentional underlying homoerotic elements
Persona 5's Shuake
Persona 3's Ryomina
Persona 4's Souyo

i think the film is excellent! it captures so well some things about the book, and the way it frames the end is muuuch different than highsmith did, in my opinion for the better. but some of its other choices annoy me in terms of characterization. theyâre very different works in terms of mood and affect, despite how faithful the story is to its counterpart. so i think itâs a really really interesting read if youve already seen the film. i watched the movie first too.
other favorites of mine are Madam Will You Talk (i canât remember the author but itâs another romance from later in the fifties, sadly very straight :p), the four book Saga of Pliocene Exile series by Julian May (a science fiction story from the eighties about âamong other thingsâ the shortcomings of utopianism, reproductive rights, and those who cannot fit even in a near-perfect society), and of course Carmilla by le fanu which needs no introduction. generally i like books filled with fraught or interesting politics or the more complex love stories. that or philosophy but i assume you meant fiction novels not dry old walter benjamin and foucault :p
what about you, maâam? what are some of your favorite books? what have you been reading lately?
~ đđ˝ââď¸đđ˝ââď¸đđ˝ââď¸ ~
Well, I suppose I'll have to read the book and find out. You certainly have an interesting taste in literature. I'm most familiar with Carmilla. I wasn't very impressed by the quality of writing, but I enjoyed the obsession and possessiveness, the search for a deeper connection and the lengths one might go to achieve that. Hm... Some of my favorite books are: "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova. It's a very well written, well-researched book. It takes you on a journey through eastern Europe and it tells a multi-layered, compelling story. I absolutely loved it the first time and re-reading it never disappoints. "Lives of the Mayfair witches" trilogy by Anne Rice is a twisted, haunting, beautiful story of the lives of a powerful family of witches. It spreads through the centuries and reveals their struggles with death, persecution, wealth and their growing power and what it means. I'm a big fan of twisted tales, so this one captured me very easily as the author absolutely disregards what is tabu, revealing shocking details about the lives of the characters. "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelly I believe needs very little introduction. I think most people are familiar with the storyline, but what the book offers that you can't see in any movie / TV show is the way Mary Shelly writes! That book is pure poetry with every word. It's gorgeous. I can't tell you enough how beautifully written it is and how much it makes you think. "Dune" by Frank Herbert is also an amazing novel. The author has some very interesting things to say on the subject of politics and philosophy, which mixed with the action and the very imaginative world-building truly captures the reader. That's off the top of my head currently, though I've loved many more books over the years. As for my latest reads... Well, actually I don't have much time to read these days, so I've been listening to audio books a lot, while driving or doing other things, but... "Ninth house" by Leigh Bardugo and the sequel "Hell bent". The author has a lot of great books (her "Shadow and bone" trilogy was incredible too) and she's been very popular these days, so I won't dive into too much detail, but her books are really good and she's also a very imaginative writer. As I like them a little twisted, she fits in quite well.

Shark, my amazing loveliest little Shark â¤ď¸. Thank you so much for this incredible reblog hun, you have brightened my day with this fabulous analysis đ¤. I honestly feel the same, that weekend did fuck all for me as well đ.
I'm so happy for the slower pace in this one and I'm happy you appreciated that as well. I tire myself out with the non stop antics. I dont know why I do it, I guess I'm always worried it will be a boring chapter if I don't add lots of things going on đŠ. Little Archie has my heart, he's just doing his best to help his families unfortunate circumstances. I'm so happy you enjoyed his little story. I based it very loosely off my grandad who at the same age as Archie was a butcher's boy. Aw thank you hun, season one is my favourite season and my favourite version of every character â¤ď¸.
Shark â¤ď¸đâ¤ď¸!! You've floored me with your lovely compliments! I've already said it to a few other readers that have mentioned the dialogue sounding like it does in the series, and I think it's because *puts hand in air to confess, I have an unfair advantage. I'm from the West Midlands, not far from Birmingham đ. Half the time I write dialogue I feel like I'm just having a conversation with my own family. But what really astounds me is you guys!! I'm cheating, you come up with incredible dialogue that sounds just as authentic as mine and you're not even from the UK let alone the West Midlands. I'm serious, it blows my mind every single time I see the talent you and everyone else on here has đ¤Ż!
The constant family members teasing eachother is a very British thing, it means we love you đ. We can't express our love like normal people do because we're stereotypically British, so instead we take the piss out of you đ¤. This is why I love writing these interactions so much because it's stuff I'd say to my own family! It brings me so much joy you love them too. Tommy totally deserved that embarrassment, Y/N's plan worked đ. Ooh, I'm not 100% sure but I think it's a British idiom đ.
I knew, and guess what? I wrote it for you knowing how much you love this hidden artistic side of Arthur. I just feel like this is something Arthur would do, he's a sensitive soul at heart â¤ď¸. I'm starting to think in another AU Arthur would be a mad crazed artist with fast paced classical music playing loudly, a paint brush between his teeth another in his hand as he furiously creates something, sloshing red paint everywhere only to throw it in a fit or rage when it doesn't turn out the way he had imagined. All of this happening in the top room of a large house, the window open so everyone in the street can hear him yelling and cursing. Kids watching him from the street below thinking's he's murdering people, and with the splats of red paint on the window they convince themselves it's blood but he's just a tortured artist đ¤Ł...I need to make this into to one shot now, maybe with a twist đđ.
Her wild teen side has come back and unfortunately for Tommy he's the one that will feel the full force of it đŹ. It was definitely a cute moment when he called her his girlfriend, he never let go of that belief đŠ. You're right he never apologised in the series and technically he didn't say sorry in this chapter but he did leave a note saying it đ. But he did admit to everything that he had put her through even though the poor thing was struggling to get the words out at first.
The next chapter might actually be the last đą. It will be pretty angsty of course, with a very special scene dear to my heart between Arthur, Y/N and a little four legged friend. But I dont think I have enough storyline to get it to 10 chapters đŠ, plus a new dark!tommy is begging to come out and play. Sorry for the rambling I got sidetracked with tortured artist!Arthur for a moment đ. Thank you for this amazing reblog hun, you're too good to me! Love you đ!!
PREVIOUS PART
Hopelessly Devoted (PART SIX)
Summary: Tommy has to reluctantly learn a lesson in boundaries after his heated confrontation with you about his foolish plan to get you to talk with him. Will Tommy finally throw in the towel and back down from his relentless refusal to let things play out at their own pace? Or will his stubbornness get the better of him once again?
Warnings: Language, angst, mutual pining, fluff
"Archie?" Polly said quirking a brow as she looked over the documents in her hand at the young boy stood at the betting shop door. " Finn's at school" she added as she turned in her chair, a tight smile gracing the corner of her lips as she beckoned him forward with her hand. " Does your mum know you're here bunking off?" She said removing his peaked cap as Archie looked down at the plate of shortbread next to the steaming cup of tea on Polly's desk. "Go on" she said nodding to them with a smile as his eyes lit up and he reached out for the biggest one on the small porcelain plate.
" Mum said I didn't have to go school today" he replied, mouth half full, his rosy red cheeks nipped by the bitter winter air ballooned with the entirety of the biscuit he had managed to fit in his mouth. "Doing deliveries for Mr Patterson at the flower shop, need the extra money now dad's been sacked by the rail works" he replied wiping his mouth as he looked down at his muddy boots, one missing a shoe lace, the other with a patched up hole on the side. Archie was one of many Small Heath children that had found themselves having to help provide for their families, forgoing education over the necessity to eat. The great war having taken the lives and jobs of many men of Birmingham had also taken the joys of childhood from their children too. Times were hard and sacrifices had to be made. Polly was not one to judge any parents decision to pull their son or daughter out of school, she only wished Archie and those like him had the chance to be children for a little while longer. For what was a summers days without the sound of kids playing outside in the street?
" Go on, have another" she winked as Archie replied with a grin that only deepened his enviable dimples whilst he picked out a second shortbread." Well I know I don't have any secret admirers Archie..." Polly said rubbing one of the rose petals between her fingers within the bouquet of flowers under the small boys arm."...so who's the lucky lady?"
" Mr Shelby" he replied brushing the crumbs of the newly stitched winter coat his mum had lovingly made for him.
" Tommy?" Polly said furrowing her brow as she looked over his shoulder to her nephew sitting at his desk in his office when Arthur and John walked in, slamming the betting shop door behind them. Five minutes peace, that's all she ever prayed for every Sunday at mass. Was it really too much to ask?
" Archie boy!" Arthur's voice boomed as he strode over, rustling the ten year old hair with his large calloused hands. " What you doing here ay? Skiving?" Arthur chuckled as he sat down on the edge of the desk pinching a biscuit from his Aunt, earning him a sharp glare and a irritated huff.
"Working" he replied standing up straight with his chin up. He was one of them now, a grown man or at least he thought he was, his muddy knees and youthful face begged to differ.
" Working ay, good lad" Arthur winked patting his shoulder as he reached for his Aunt's cup of hot tea, earning him a second glare and this time a smack on the back of his hand. No one was too old for a good hiding in Polly's eyes, something her grown nephews had learnt over the years as they continued to test her patience.
" Schools a bloody waste of time anyway Archie" John said turning his toothpick between his lips.
" Yes, a lot of good it did you and your crooked handwriting" Polly quipped back, a small smirk etched on the corner of her mouth as she returned her gaze to the documents on her desk.
" It's called doctors hand writing, alright?" John replied with a scowl on his face.
" Esme tell you that?" Arthur chuckled watching his brothers frustration at being the brunt of his families teasing.
" No it's, it's how doctors write. You know intellects" he replied pointing to the side of his head.
" Aright John boy whatever let's you sleeps at night" Arthur sniggered as he looked down at the bunch of roses in Archie's hand. " Who are these for then?"
" His Royal Highness" Polly said nodding to Tommy's office door as she picked up her now lukewarm cup of tea.
" Tommy ay? Come on then lad, let's not keep Mr Patterson waiting on any more deliveries" Arthur said as Archie nodded his head following him and John into Tommy's office.
"Arthur, John...Archie?" Tommy said, a cigarette hanging from the corner of his mouth as he looked up from his desk, surprised to see his Finn's friend standing in the middle of the room with the bouquet he had picked out for you in his hand. And was that the card he had written for you, torn up? " She erh, she wasn't home? Tommy said clearing his throat as he stubbed his cigarette out, his eyes glaring at the handwritten note between the flowers. It was definitely ripped. Shit.
" She told me to..." Archie said as he looked to John and Arthur stood next to him trying to hold back their amusement. Their poor attempts not enough to stop the small snorts and sniggers they hadn't bothered to muffle from escaping.
"Yes?" Tommy said, his jaw tightening at the sight of his brothers clear enjoyment at the whole situation.
" ...to send them back" Archie said as Arthur John burst into a fit of laughs.
" Bloody hell Tommy, what woman sends flowers back? How many did you give her? John laughed as Arthur let out a loud snort.
" Seven" Archie quickly stated on behalf of him, not realising the further embarrassment it would cause the notorious gangster who had now sunk into his chair, his thumb brushing along his brow as the laughs of his brothers resonated through the betting shop.
" Alright, thanks Archie" Tommy said rubbing his hand down his face as the young boy left, leaving the bouquet of red roses with Arthur with a tip of his peaked cap.
" Seven bouquets ay" Arthur said inspecting them as Tommy looked out the window, his grandiose gesture now looking like a pathetic plea for forgiveness.
" She won't fucking talk to me will she" Tommy said lighting another cigarette as John and Arthur hunched over the table puzzling the pieces of card together you had ripped in a clear message directed at Tommy to fuck off.
" Roses are red, violets are blue..." John laughed before Tommy reached over and grabbed the note before his brother could read any more of his feeble attempt to be romantic.
" Sir Edmund Spense" Arthur said nodding to the card as he leaned against the wall, his thumbs resting in the pockets of his waistcoat.
" You what?" John said his face scrunched up as he turned to look at his eldest brother.
" It's a poem, by Sir Edmund Spense" Arthur sniffed as Tommy and John looked at each other, bewildered by the mere idea Arthur did anything other than beat their enemies within an inch of their let alone read or to be more specific read poems. Even Tommy hadn't scaled through a copious amount of books in order to find the romantic passage, the back of yesterday mornings paper had been enough. " I read" Arthur said as his brothers continued to stare at him, perplexed by what they had just heard." In me spare time"
" You're going soft" John said pointing to his brother as Tommy raised his brows shifting in his seat. " Never put Y/N down for a fan of poems"
" She's not, I was running out of things to say weren't I. Tommy replied looking over to the glass decanter of whisky calling to him. Was it too early to drown his sorrows for the billionth time that week?
" Yeh, wouldn't let her hear you say that" John chuckled placing a new tooth pick between his teeth, the other having been chewed to death by the ribbing he received from Polly and Arthur. "Why don't you just say I dunno, sorry. Like normal people do"
" She's avoiding me John, she won't give me a chance" Tommy replied as he looked out the window wishing himself into next week or better yet, next year. Maybe then you'd be more willing to talk to him.
" Well you're in luck Tom, 'cause here she is. With a face on her like thunder" Arthur smirked, nodding to the glass separating his office and the betting shop floor.
" Where is he, where is the rat bastard?!" You shouted storming through the building not stopping for anyone.
" Oh hell, what's he done now?" Polly said looking above her tea cup as you marched over to her, waving your arms erratically in the air, incoherent rambles leaving your mouth about her seconded born nephew as the three brothers watched on from behind the glass.
" I'd say you've got about five seconds" Arthur said as he looked out the window onto the back of the house.
" Jump and roll, don't land on your feet" John added to Arthur's observation as he peered over his brothers shoulder out the window.
" Else you'll do your knees in, but I reckon that's the least of your worries" Arthur said as he looked over to Tommy brushing his hands through his hair, bracing himself for the bollocking coming his way. "Shit, she's clocked you" Arthur announced turning around as your head snapped in the direction of the three of them. This was more than about the flowers, Tommy knew that. He had pried into your life for a second time. The only thing he could hope for was you didn't know about the first. And with the absence of a lethal weapon in your hand his hopes were optimistically high.
" Thomas fucking Shelby!" You shouted marching through his office, grabbing the flowers from his desk and launching them straight at his head, silently hoping Mr Patterson had left the thorns on. "You bastard! You bloody bastard"
" Look, I know you're angry but let me explain" Tommy said with his hand out as he watched yours clasp around the bronze sculpture of a horse sitting on his desk that was sure to knock him out if you threw it. After having a variety of household items thrown at him in in the past week he knew you wasn't bluffing, your face said it all you were pissed off, really pissed off.
" No I'm not angry Tommy I'm fucking furious!" you said, your face scrunched up in anger as you stared him down, waiting for him to admit what he had done.
" Arthur, John can you...can you give us a minute?" Tommy said as he walked forward only to stop when he saw your grasp on the bronze ornament tighten. " Lads, please" Tommy said gesturing to the door as he watched you in the corner of his eye. Sighing heavily Tommy turned to his desk as his brothers walked out leaving you alone together, leaving him to face yet another stupid idea he was responsible for. "Cigarette?" he offered holding his silver case out for you to take which you did, and then threw on the floor beside you. " Right" Tommy said as he sat down in his chair pinching his bottom lip together as he looked back at you, furious as the the night he had drunkenly embarrassed himself in front of the whole of Watery Lane. "You won't talk to me Y/N" he said lighting his third cigarette in the space of fifteen minutes.
" So you decided to force me to talk to you by sabotaging not one but three potential job offers"
" I didn't sabotage them. I merely informed them that you already had a job here, as my secretary" Tommy replied pointing his finger into his desk.
" But I dont do I Tommy? You fired me, remember?" You scoffed, a scoff you hoped would not only distract him but you from the tears welling in your eyes.
" Sweetheart look, can..." Tommy was about to say when your eyes narrowed in on him and he stopped himself before he infuriated you any more than you already was. " Y/N, can we talk as adults? Sit down without, throwing anything?" he said gesturing to your hand still resting on the statue.
" Are you patronising me?" You replied, your voice going up an octave at his suggestion you were being immature when for the past five years he had been far from mature himself.
" No I'm just...fuck sake, I can't win with you" Tommy replied throwing his hand up in the air as he leaned back into his chair shaking his head.
"No you can't, so stop meddling in my life Tommy. Stop ruining every chance I have to move on"
" And that's what you want? To move on?" Tommy reluctantly asked as he looked back to you, the uncomfortable weight now sitting on his chest making him wish he never asked the question at all.
" Yes" you replied turning your head, unable to face him and the truth that you couldn't and wouldn't ever be able to stop loving him, stop wanting him.
" You're lying Y/N, I could always tell when you're lying" Tommy said as he stood up slowly walking over to you like you would a wild horse.
"You need to let me be, let me move on" you sniffed back as your eyes cast down to the floor. " Isn't that what you've been doing, moving on? I gave you space Tommy, I gave you what you wanted for five years even though it was breaking my heart and all I wanted you to do was hold me in your arms" You said wiping your tears, furious at yourself for letting him see you this way.
"Then let me ey, let me hold you" Tommy said moving closer, his hand reaching out for you. " Sweetheart..."
"Stop calling me that!" You cried brushing his attempts away as you walked past him to his office door. You weren't his sweetheart, you weren't his childhood love, you weren't his girl. It was over, all of it over. " Boundaries Tommy, you need to learn some boundaries. Learn to leave me alone" you said opening his door looking back at the defeat on his face as you recomposed yourself. " And Tommy?" You said turning one last time before shutting the door. " If you call me sweetheart one more time I swear to god you'll find the sharp end of that ugly horse ornament aimed straight at your cock, and this time I promise you, I won't miss" and with that you left, shutting the door behind you as Tommy watched you walk past the glass on the opposite of his office, your head held high as you brushed your hair to one side not giving him a second glance. He had been told off look a naughty school boy, and just like a child he was in for the biggest lesson of his life, patience.
"I wasn't really going to throw it" you said sat beside Ada in the Garrison as she rocked Karl back and forth in his pram. "I mean, I was tempted" you added unable to hold back your laugh as Ada giggled into her glass of gin. " Ada I don't know what's gotten into me. I just want to kill him...all the time. And the worse part is I think he was trying to say sorry, and I didn't let him" you sighed bringing your hand up to your face as you closed your eyes, having recounted what had happened in Tommy's office and everything else in the past month to his younger sister at lightening speed. The rapid pace of your account of events clearly fuelled by the anger still lingering within you.
" Hey" Ada said moving your hand away, her face scrunched up with concern. "Nothings gotten into you, more like what's gotten out of you. Five years worth of pent up anger would drive anyone to the point of wanting to wring my idiot brothers neck" she said as she looked at the bags under your eyes, Tommy always did have a knack for making people feel as sleep deprived and knackered as him. "You've been bottling it up for far too long locked away in that flat.." she said as she raised her brow ready to give you a bitter reality check. "...not living"
" What...I've been living" you scoffed leaning back into your chair as you crossed your arms. " I'm breathing aren't I?"
" Right, tell me then. When's the last time you let your hair down and you know, had some fun?" she replied mirroring your actions, crossed armed ready for whatever lie you had convinced yourself of.
" Well, there's..." you said furrowing your brow trying desperately to think back to the last time you actually laughed, did Arthur's endearing jokes count? " Well I can't, can I? Not with him gallivanting about with god knows who stealing the fun from everyone else" you pouted, resolving to the fact you hadn't had a proper nights out in years.
" If you call moping about day and night complaining about you, then sure he's had as much fun as you" Ada replied taking a grizzly baby Karl out his pram as she lifted her blouse to feed him. " If it bothers you that much then kindly bugger off " Ada said turning to the group of workmen shaking their heads seated a few tables away as they took their glasses and moved to the bar. "And before you even say anything, that barmaid was all for show, he was angry. I'm sorry he picked the worse way possible of showing you babe" Ada said reaching her hand out for you giving it a gentle squeeze. " Why don't I set you up with someone, one of Freddie's friends, for a date" she suggested nudging her arm with yours, a mischievous glint in her eye.
" But Tommy...his your brother..I"
" Y/N stop. You're allowed to go out even if it's just for a bit of fun" She cut you off as she brought Karl up to her shoulder, gently patting his back.
" Ada Thorne, why do I get the feeling you just want me to piss him off" you squinted at her as a smile formed on the corner of your mouth. It wouldn't hurt to give him a taste of his own medicine. You thought to yourself knowing he had his henchman still keeping their eye on you.
" Hm, whatever made you think that?" she winked to you as the Garrison doors blew open and the very man who had been the topic of conversation for the past hour walked in. "Speak of the devil. Here he is, tail between his legs" Ada nodded to the door as she placed Karl back into his pram.
" More like a dog with a bone" you huffed as you turned to see him walking straight for you. God, what did he want now?
" Boundaries" Tommy said standing beside you as you sipped on your drink, crossing one leg over the other.
" Yes and? " you replied bluntly as you diverted your eyes elsewhere, the stained-glass of the Garrison windows for one.
"Well, I need some clarifications" he said as he walked around the table, now directly in front of you. Fuck sake.
" Clarifications, what do you want me to do write you a list?" You scoffed as Tommy carefully considered his reply. A list would make his life easier.
" Y/N, you gotta give me something. What do you want me to do?" he replied with a huff, abandoning the idea of a catalogue of what he could and couldn't do as he placed both of his hands on the table looming over you. Fuck you look tired. Was that his fault too?
" Fuck off Tommy, that's what I want you to do" you said scraping your chair back along the wooden floorboards as you got up and left the Garrison, leaving him for a second time that day clueless on what to do next.
"Oh Tommy, you won't be able to bring her around with your charm this time. I'm afraid this is something a quick fuck down by the cut won't fix. You need to try harder" Ada said as she stood up putting her coat on.
" I'm trying Ada, but she'll barely talk to me"
" Yeh I heard about your attempts to win her back. Seven bouquets of flowers, her place looked like a bloody graveyard Tommy, hardly romantic" she said rolling her eyes as she turned the pram to the door.
" How was I supposed to know she didn't like flowers any more?" Tommy huffed as he followed his sister out the Garrison. Maybe Ada knew something he didn't that would win you back...he hoped.
" You know Y/N better than anyone Tommy, you must have known she wouldn't have liked that tacky show of wealth. And don't even get me started on your attempts to get her attention" Ada said struggling to push the pram through the thick mud and dirt of Small Heath. " Do you not remember the flowers you used to pick her and how long you'd spend doing it?" Ada stopped, looking up at her brother as the realisation finally hit him. That over the top plea of forgiveness may have cost him a day's wages but only now did he realise how it must have come across. A cop out. And as Ada so rightfully said, tacky." She didn't fall in love with this Tommy, the Tommy that has to show everyone his worth, his status. She fell in love with this one" she said pulling out the gold pocket watch you had gifted him ten years ago from within his waistcoat that had been back in its rightful place for over a week. " Stop being the worst version of yourself and show her who's she been missing, who she fell in love with. And for the love of god stop being a bloody idiot" she said before turning onto watery lane as a glimmer of a smile played on the corner of Tommy's lips at his sister brutal but well-deserved parting words.
How many more people was it going to take before he let his stubbornness slide and took their advice. It would admittedly be the hardest thing he had ever had to do, no doubt driving him mad in the process. Tommy thought to himself deciding to call of his men from keeping an eye on you or as he corrected anyone who dared to challenge him on the matter, keeping you safe. If he was going to do this he would do it the correct way, without the grand displays or need of theatrics. For the first time in a long time Tommy was going let things play out at their own pace, relenting all control over the situation his was so desperate to resolve.
Tea why did you offer him a tea? You thought to yourself climbing the stairs with the friend of Freddie's Ada had set you up with. The evening had been a disaster. Henry, your date, had spent the entirety of the night talking about his one and only passion politics, something you had little to zero interest in. Opening the door to your place you mentally reminded yourself to have words with Ada about the complete bore she had set you up with and clarification as to what she considered a good night out, because this certainly wasn't it.
" Nice place" he said entering your small bedsit. Was he joking? It was the pokiest flat in Small Heath, nothing worked and you was pretty sure a small family of mice had moved in and made it their life's mission to steal any form of food you left out for more than five minutes.
" Thank you" you said gesturing for him to sit at the small table by your window as you turned to make the tea you was reluctantly going to have to prepare whether you wanted to or not. Desperate to get him to leave and as quick as possible you decided to forgo boiling any water and instead planned on making him the coldest brew of tea known to man. That would do the trick, wouldn't it? " Here" you said placing the small mug in front of him as your mind wandered to what had really been occupying your thoughts all evening. Tommy.
" That was quick" he replied scrunching his brow as he looked into the murky water, a few tea leaves floating on the top. "You not having one?"
" Oh no, not a fan of...that " you said twiddling your thumbs on your lap as you looked at the less than delightful concoction you had created.
" Did you even boil.." he started to say causing your cheeks to turn bright red as your brain scrambled to come up with an excuse when, as if you had been saved by a higher power there was a knock at that door.
" Excuse me" you said walking away, grateful for the opportunity to leave any further interrogations about your tea making skills. "Tommy..."
" Hey" he replied softly, a smile appearing on the corner of his mouth as you opened your front door. " You've company" he said clearing his throat looking over your shoulder to see a man sitting at your kitchen table as he threw the small posy of flowers he had been holding behind his back along the outer wall of your bedsit.
" Tommy, I mean Mr Shelby. I...I thought you two weren't erhh" he stumbled, fumbling to grab his coat, abandoning the cold cup of tea he was sure you didn't boil any water for. "Together" he said swallowing harshly as he stood at the door beside you both.
" We're no.." you replied before Tommy cut your off.
"We are" Tommy said moving out of the way of the exit as he gestured for him to leave, irritated by the mere fact he had taken one extra second to do so. With the biggest scoff you could muster you crossed your arms as you stared him down. We are...is that what the past five years had been then, a bump in the road a bloody break?
"Thanks for ruining my date" you said marching over to the cup and throwing it's contents into the sink as Tommy shut the door behind him.
" What with Henry Coggs? Interesting choice for a date. Did he not bore you to death with his political crap?" Tommy chuckled as he watched you potter around your place trying to avoid any conversation with him.
" No, I found it really interesting actually" you lied and badly. " Tommy what do you want? I thought I told you to..."
" Fuck off?" he said sitting on the edge of your table as you stood in front of him.
" Leave me alone" you rephrased as he cocked a brow at your forgetful or intentional lack of memory as to what your actual parting words were to him in the Garrison a few days ago.
" And I have. I wanted to come here and say that you're right that..."
" Oh so you don't have to be a complete drunk to admit when you're wrong" you cut him off, your guard up ready for an argument you was sure would happen.
" You really want to start?"
" Ok then, let's hear what Tommy Shelby has to say? Actually no, forget it. Please leave" you said turning to the door when he grabbed your arm and span you back around to face him.
"Y/N can you just.." Tommy huffed as he tried to keep you in place. " Will you just hear me out?" he added as he placed his hand on your other arm, holding you in front on him. " Please?" He said as you found yourself nodding, stumped for words, slightly taken aback by his willingness to open up. " I..." Tommy said wetting his bottom lip with his tongue, his mouth suddenly going dry. Could he really do this without drinking a whole bottle of whisky beforehand?
" I've been an idiot" he said pausing as you rolled your eyes. Well that was the biggest understatement of the year. You thought to yourself as you turned to walk away again. "I broke my own heart Y/N, you didn't do anything wrong, you never did anything wrong" he said the words you never expected to hear causing you to stop. " I've..shit, I'm fucking this up" he said looking up at the ceiling, shaking his head as his mind uncomfortably replayed all times he had hurt you.
" No you're not, keep going. Please" you said turning around to face him.
"I made your life miserable Y/N, all because I couldn't stand how miserable I'd made my own. Pathetic aren't I ?" he said placing his hand back on your arm his thumb gently rubbing over the soft fabric of your blouse. " I don't expect you to ever forgive me for the five years of hell I put you through, I'd be a fool to think you would. But I need you to know that I regret everything, everything I've ever done that's hurt you, that's made you cry. It's all been my fault darling, I should have never made you think it was yours " he sighed, the words he had been wanting to say for the past week if not the past five years spilling out of him as if they had been patiently waiting there, waiting for him to break down the iron wall he had built around himself. Speechless you stood there, not knowing what to say, what to do as you let his words sink in. This was possibly the first time you had ever heard Tommy admit to anything let alone his own wrongdoings. And yet he had, and as you stood there staring at eachother in silence you finally came to realise what the other had endured, had regretted. The heartache you had both thought was your own had been a heartache shared, one that was now enveloping you both in a warm hug as you finally understood each others pain. " Its getting late I should probably go" he said breaking the silence and the small bubble you had both momentarily found yourselves in. "Goodnight Y/N " Tommy said as he leaned forward pressing a kiss to your cheek, the small embrace feeling the most natural thing for him to do in the moment as his lips lingered on your soft skin for a few seconds longer in hopes you would say something, do something. But you just stood there, his unexpected confession keeping you frozen in place as a rush of emotions that you had pushed to the side for five years came hurtling towards you.
"...night" you managed to coax from your lip's as you turned your head to watch him leave, listening intently to the sound of his heavy footsteps walking down the stairs as you desperately tried to think of something to say. " Tommy wait" you called out as you ran to your door only to see he had was already left, the gate at the bottom of the stairs swinging open and close as a gust of wind blew a scattering of leaves onto the steps below you. Leaning against the door frame you brought your hand up to your head as you closed your eyes, pushing your thumb into the skin between your brows as you cursed yourself for not saying anything in response to his attempts at making amends. Was that all it took? Had you forgiven him already? You thought to yourself as you opened your eyes and looked down at the rickety wooden stairs to see a posy of flowers with a small card buried within them sitting on the weather beaten wood. Wrapping your arms around your body from the cold you sat down beside the small bouquet held together by twine. One, two, three flowers, you smiled as you counted them within the various leaves and foliage. How long had it taken him to find possibly the only three flowers still alive in Small Heath after the deluge of rain and bitter weather the whole of Birmingham had endured for the past month. You thought to yourself knowing exactly who had abandoned them on the steps in front of your home, the small gesture tugging at your memories of times before when Tommy had gone out of his way to do the very same thing. Pulling out the small card your heart skipped a beat, your eyes welling with tears at the two words staring back at you, the two words you never felt you deserved, that you felt worthy of from the very man who had written them.
"I'm sorry"

The Creative Directors Behind Fate: The Winx Saga Must Not Be K-Pop Fans
Also, they have a pretty wrong idea of the role fashion should play in a show.
There are a few words that will stand out across most reviews of Netflix's Fate: The Winx Saga - drab, boring, flop, flat, unimaginative. Critics and audiences consensus is that the show is not only a mediocre-at-best story, but also an atrocious (and ultimately confusing) choice of adaptation of the color pop and fairy magic cartoon itâs based on, 2004 italian cartoon Winx Club.
Fate has plenty of it's own issues - white washing and erasing characters, cringey dialogue, outdated melodrama, etc. But where it truly, unequivocally fails is as an adaptation. Fate misses everything that was magical and lovable about the original series, in all levels, from bizarre writing choices, - such as never actually developing any sense of friendship between the characters, who are based on a cartoon aboutâŚ..a groupâŚâŚ.of friends -, but it's especially and immediately felt in the art direction and costume design.
Winx Club is set on a fantastical world, Magix, where each of our main characters hail from a different planet, Ă la Sailor Moon. Alfea, the fairy school they attend, is the most common background: a pastel colored, futuristic high tech-meets-fantasy, art nouveau inspired castle. Alfea sets the tone for the whole visual of the cartoon: bright, colorful, futuristic meets vintage, leaning into the technological positivism of the Y2K style, uniting it with magic, DnD worthy monsters and, of course, fairy wings. Often featured are also the Red Fountain school, where the Specialists train, and especially Cloud Tower, the goth and gothic inspired witch school Alfea has an OxBridge rivalry with (How cool would that be in a live action? I guess weâll never knowâŚ).
On Fate, Alfea is the only school we ever see, and itâs another beige boarding school in not-Britain, somehow set in a magical world where everyone has the exact same technology and even social media that we have on Earth in 2021, no transformations and, most egregiously, no fairy wings.
This lack of visual creativity is pervasive throughout the whole show, and its most heartbreaking iteration is in the characters' wardrobe. The styling has the barest bones of a color scheme, - such as 'Bloom has to only dress in red since fire, duh',- the clothes are ill fitting, bland, dark and very dated. These are supposed to be teenagers who enjoy fashion, and yet they look like varying types of soccer moms from 2010.
The series seems to operate on an old and tired vision that women and girls canât have depth and have adventures and fight monsters while also caring about fashion, a vision that the original show played a big, big role in challenging in the early 2000's. Fashion and costume design sets as much of the tone of a visual medium as the script does; through clothes we can gauge charactersâ backgrounds, passions, and personality.
Winx Club has some of the best examples of this in the cartoon sphere - Bloomâs comfortable and bright style, Stellaâs glitzy and bold, Musaâs edgy and cool, Aishaâs sporty and fun, Technaâs neon and tech gear inspired, Floraâs earthy and romantic, they all work as extensions of each character and serve a narrative purpose. And thatâs not even mentioning how insulting it feels that in their quest to make Winx âedgier, darkerâ and fit for an older audience, the creators of Fate somehow decided that was in opposition to caring about style and fashion. Most âgirlyâ shows, including the Winx Club are just as much adventure action shows as the ones geared towards boys, and itâs emphasis in fashion, friendship and color does not detract from that. The original run of the cartoon deals with war, violence, grief, abusive relationships and even genocide; leaning into those plotlines would not require Fate to erase any integral parts of what made Winx so beloved, and the fact that they did shows that the Netflix team completely missed the point of fashion in the original show, and really, the point of fashion and costume design in the world building of any show.
That, however, is not a mistake K-Pop makes very often; (This might seem like a bit of wild swerve in topic, but stay with me here). Unlike it's western counterpart, the Korean pop scene never lost the emphasis on music videos and how the visual medium can complete and potentialize music and performance; the K-Pop culture is very album and concept oriented in a way that has been all but lost in many other pop circuits, and the music video, styling and set design of a âcomeback eraâ is a key point of excitement among fans.
As such, music videos that follow storylines, connected universes, boundary pushing concepts and visual effects are the norm, rather than the exception, and a list could be made of works that are beautiful examples of what a live action Winx adaptation could look like. In fact, and very smoothly, here is a small list of exactly that!
A Small List of K-Pop Music Videos That Are Better Winx Club Live Actions Than Fate: The Winx Saga
3. Red Velvet - Psycho
If it was a darker and more somber look that Fate wanted, there was a way to make it actually appealing. While it still feels a liiitle too grown up and elegant for Winx, (maybe this author is biased, as a full proponent for the Y2K fun) Psycho makes a very compelling argument for a witchy, mysterious, fairy tale-esque show that could look scrumptious and definitely not boring, or even a gorgeous example of what the witches in Cloud Tower could look like. Black and white, dark green, pastel blue and pops of jewel tones make Psycho's color palette. To add interest to the understated colors, the styling is heavy on textures; We see plenty of stonework, intricate embroidery, tassels, lace on lace on lace, feathers, bows, opera gloves and lots of glitter. All of that is offset by bold, dark makeup, leather accents and eerie cinematography. Needle & Thread, Marchesa Notte and Self Portrait lend their hyper feminine and intricately detailed tulle gowns, juxtaposed with the creepiness of the lyrics and the dark backgrounds; their deep berry and green fairy tale looks are built with pieces from Zara to Nina Ricci to Dolce & Gabbana to Alexander McQueen.
Red Velvetâs more edgy styling for 2018's Bad Boy would also not feel out of place on the Trix.
2. IZ*ONE - Fiesta
IZ*ONE kicked off 2020 with sweet and fun Fiesta. The MV features rooms with mismatched dĂŠcor that go from retro to space opera, rocky faux landscapes that feel other worldly, and visual effects that would look perfect on the back of a transformation sequence. Mirroring the set design, the girls wear various outfits by sustainable up and coming brand Chopova Lowena. Their signature skirts made with discarded and repurposed fabrics give a cool and interesting twist on a schoolgirl look that would look very sweet for a band of school fairies that occasionally go off to save the world. Also, wouldn't those bedazzled headphones look great on Musa's fairy outfit?
1. Aespa - Black Mamba and Next Level
Aespa is what fans call a monster rookie. With only three music videos under their belt, they still have some of the most visually interesting work in the industry right now. Their concept is very tied in with high tech, featuring even AI avatars of each member, packaged in a glitzy, fantastical and futuristic aesthetic, candy pop meets cyberpunk. I think Iâve exhausted ways to say that is exactly what a perfect Winx adaptation should feature.
Their debut smash hit, 2020âs Black Mamba is truly a perfect moodboard for live action Winx. Wearing a sequined and colorful mix and match of Dollskill, Gucci, Didu and Balenciaga to a backdrop that features some alien fairy forest realness, a pyschedelic fever dream, rooms straight out of a Y2K catalog or donning lime green and black techwear inside a metro fighting the "black mamba", Aespa look through and through the part of fashion loving fairies who save the world together, while looking fierce, stylish and, most importantly, interesting.
The styling and the sets jump seamlessly from more casual colorful fits with blouses, shirts and baggy pants to barren, darkly lit backgrounds and fringe-and-glitter heavy pieces necessary to fight giant snakes, in a way so fitting to transformation outfits for magical girls we could cry.
In their third MV, 2021's Next Level, the cyber in their concept is taken up a notch (get it. because Next Level-), set to a futuristic urbanscape intersped with a planet made of crystals and the ocasional alien fauna popping up again. We get treated to Monse, The 2nd Skin Co., Johanna Ortiz and The Attico styled to fairy princess standards, sporty sky racers and a white and sequined group styling that is top ten fairy busy saving the world uniform material, or maybe even a specialist worthy getup.
This particular look from Ningning is so Techna that it almost feels as if it's mocking Netflix.
And doesnât this Karina trapped inside the "black mamba" in Alexander McQueen feel like a perfect Dark Bloom moment?
These are only a few examples of interesting and creative designs that are in line with what a live action Winx Club should have given us. There are so many more I could list, even among other TV Shows, like Sex Education and even polemic dark Euphoria, that know how to have fun with style and design without losing the depth of their stories. In the end, it's hard to justify why Fate creators even wanted to make an adaptation that didn't even try to capture the heart of its source material, and all we can do is watch one more "Restyling Fate: The Winx Saga" video on Youtube whilst mildly dreading season 2.

Robin Jason, a friend and ally of the Titans.
PART 2.
Hi! Welcome to Part 2 of this post, as I said in the last one, I will be talking about Robin Jasonâs moments and not reviewing the issues from a story point of view but I think I will have to give a little more context in this one because honestly I am a little lost with this particular storyline, there is too much going on and Jason isn't part of many pages so yeah, I hope this post isn't too boring or bad though.
I will link part 1 Here!
Letâs begin!
¡        NTT (1884) #26-28
In my last post I talked about how Jason would be called by Donna to help the Titans save Dick and Raven from Brother Bloodâs people. We start #26 with Mother Mayhem giving a public speech on television. What you have to get from this is that this cult is using the image of the two Titans/Heroes (Nightwing and Raven) that they captured as propaganda for their intentions, their intentions being resurrecting Brother Blood and making the world believe that they are good people. Obviously, Dick and Raven are not there because they are supportive of their cause, they were both brainwashed.
In this issue the Titans team that had fallen apart in issue #19 is back, so we find Donna, Beast boy, Cyborg, Joey and Wally together once more and they are trying to figure out what to do because they have two problems, on one hand Beast Boyâs father is killing people and captured Garth and on the other a whole ass cult is doing cult-y shit and captured Dick and Raven. In the end they choose to go save Dick and Raven first but they do it because Beast Boy says this âIâŚdonât know. I canât say what we should do. We need Dick hereâŚheâs a tactician. We need him as out leaderâ. Never in my life would I have thought that I would agree with beast boy but yeahâŚhard agree.
Donna understands that even though the team is (mostly) back on its feet they still need more firepower and thatâs why she calls Jason. While it was kinda rude of Cyborg to say that Jason is not all that (in terms of firepower) any kind of tension is quicky gone because Starfire comes back (talk about firepower).
We have various moments of Beast Boy being a perv towards Kory (thanks a lot Marv) but thatâs not important, whatâs important is that now the Titans have to tell Kory that Dick has been captured and they are on their way to save him.
They all leave to Zandia (where Brother Bloodâs Church is located) and a fight ensues as soon as they arrive, they fight but their goal is to get to the Church as fast as possible. Jason doesnât say anything in these panels but he is fighting alongside the others. When things get a bit more complicated Jason starts to feel that maybe he isnât that capable of handling himself but he doesnât have to do anything by himself because this time he has a team that can back him up. Kory gives him a lift as soon as Jason is surrounded, he is of course thankful and a little bit pervy (thanks a lot Marv).
Kory is shot just after she gets him out of trouble and Jason as the adorable kid that he is becomes worried for her well-being. After Beast Boy is also injured in the fight the Titans decide to leave back to camp. Thankfully both Kory and BB are okay but they are all still worried about how they will get to the Church. We see here once more Donna being a bit overwhelmed with leading the Titans and beating herself up over what happened in Switzerland (#20 and #21) but Jason reassures her instantly that she did a good job and she doesnât need to be so hard on herself.
This interaction here is particularly nice because Jason reassures Donna without her asking for it. In my last post Donna looked for reassurance in Robin several times but she didnât do it because she actually wanted Jason to give his thoughts, she did it because she was hoping Jason would act like Dick and eventually take over the teamâs leadership. Here that isnât the case, Jason just tells her what he thinks.
After Donna talks about her doubts Kory says that she is impatient and worried about Dick but also expresses being unsure because the last time that she saw Dick they kinda left things off on âbad termsâ. I say this because just like it happened with Jason and Roy, Jason and Kory also have differences, she is a grown and experienced woman that is going through adult problems and Jason is a kid that is just happy that he was called to join them on another adventure.
If we back a few panels to when Jason said that Kory âwas a sight for sore eyesâ Kory responds saying âfirst Changeling, now you. Itâs got to be pubertyâ, she is obviously not pleased about Jason making that comment about her and itâs also made clear that he is just a teenager.
This is where I rant about how different what we see here is from what we get later in New 52. Just like Roy (in New 52) Kory is also seemingly very close or the same age as Jason and she is the one that is written as wanting to take Jason to bed or, at the very least, attracted to him. Kory being an adult in comparison with Jason is taken away from her and she is just transformed into something to fit Jasonâs new beginning as the Red Hood. Lobdell didnât do Kory any favours, he annihilated her character and made her out to be just eye candy that can come off as stupid and way too reckless just to prop Jason up, believe it or not Jason sometimes was the voice of reason to both Roy and Koryâs antics.
Itâs even worse when you consider the fact that in this issue Kory is feeling better and more confident because she finally understands what she wants and has accepted Earth as her real home, all of that is gone in New 52, Kory is lost, insecure, she even depends on Jason a bit too much at the start (because she âdidnât rememberâ her time on earth or Dick) and goes back to killing. All in all, Lobdellâs version of Kory was very damaging and a disservice to her past history.
Back to the issue, as Donna and the others are going to start coming up with a plan (with only two days until resurrection day) we move scenes and find ourselves in a meeting where people are complaining about the Titans messing up their plans, but that is not what matters, apparently the people in that meeting wanted to âsummon the Brotherhoodâ and here is where we are introduced to the person who will make the Titansâ lives a little more complicatedâŚTwister. She is one of the people that were victims to Brother Bloodâs brainwashing and experiments.
In the next page we see the Titans resting but Cyborg is awake so thanks to that he hears someone coming straight to them, here Kory takes the lead and she says once more that she will not kill whoever that is, that she canât and wonât do that anymoreâŚI wonder if Lobdell ever read these issues, maybe not.
The attacker was Twister and in seconds she twists the Titansâ reality and leaves them all incapacitated. She then goes to look for and recruit the Brotherhood of Evil. While she did that though the Titans slowly made their way back to the city and are now getting ready to attack. Donnas plans as we soon find out donât include Jason as one of their front line fighters, in fact he has to be left behind as back up.
Jason is not very happy about this; he is the boy wonder! But because itâs the plan and the Titans are experienced, he decided to stay put (at least for now). Its funny to me that even Beast Boy calls Jason a kid. What is sad from these panels is obviously the last thing that Jason says âI canât wait until I am sixteen!â. I mean, this issue came out exactly two years before Jasonâs death, there was no way they could have seen that coming but yeah, itâs just sad. Jason really was in a better and happier place around this time, little did he know everything would turn upside down after a while. Â
The rest of the Titans fight, Donna starts to feel like she is finally in control and that she is doing a great job at keeping the Titans together, Kory is having her inner turmoil about Dick but she is doing her job and when she decides to go help Cyborg and Joey they come across the Brotherhood of Evil. This is where #26 ends.
Issue #27 starts with a very difficult fight for Kory, Cyborg and Joey, it ends with Kory injured, Joey captured and with Cyborg thrown off a window. The only one of them that Donna, Beast Boy and Jason are able to save is Kory.
The Titans that re left have to retreat and find a place to recover, Jason is very silent all the time but Donna and Kory are the ones that are having interesting talks, they have to find out where the Brotherhood has Joey and Cyborg and their time to save Dick and Raven is running out but if they donât save the others they might die. Itâs a complicated situation and they are both impatient but Donna tells Kory this âDick would be the first to tell you to plan first, attack laterâ, I bring this up because nowadays its very common for fanon and current writers to think of Dick as someone that doesnât plan, that doesnât think before jumping. Even Beast boy called him a tactician, I know this is a Jason post but its also a post about how characterizations are also kinda destroyed. Dick has suffered a lot from mischaracterization so its nice to go back to these stories and see that what we think Dick should be now isnât something that we once imagined but something that mas modified or taken away from him either by fanon or current writers.
After the Titans decide to wait for the storm to pass to go looking for Joey and Cyborg, we actually see that Cyborg is in the city looking for shelter, he is injured and as he falls unconscious we meet a couple that decides to save him. Back to the Titans once more we have Jason say that the storm that is forming look âlike something out of Ghostbustersâ its then that the Brotherhood makes itself known, they are taunting them and they have roped Joey to the top of the capitol building and they are asking the Titans to surrender or Joey dies.
Its here where Donna takes full control of the Titans and even though she and Kory have different ideas of what to do she says that she is the leader now and what she says gets done. Donna will be in charge of saving Joey while the others will make their way towards the Brother Blood Church to help Dick and Raven.
Before they go their separate ways Jason says this about Donna âWow! I wouldnât wanna be in her shoes for all the garbage pail kid stickers in the world.â I am going to be honest, I had to look those stickers up and all I have to say is what the hell. But I am not here to talk about stickers I am here to talk about how funny its that Jason is being so uninterested about leading a team. Now, donât get me wrong, Jason has the ability to lead, yes, but he is better at leading himself or an operation, we have all read UtRH, we know how well the Red Hood can handle himself and his plans but a team of heroes? Controversial opinion but I think that Jason should have never been given a team and I am talking about Kory and Roy as well as Artemis and Bizarro. Was Rebirth better than New 52? Absolutely. But I just donât see Jason as a leader of a team of heroes and itâs also incredibly repetitive, just because he was Robin doesnât mean that he needs his own team. I know that Robin Jason and Red Hood Jason arenât the same person and that they might think differently but if Lobdell had never come into Red Hood/Jason Toddâs life when he did we might have never seen Jason lead his own team and that to me is proof enough that it should have never happened. I quite enjoyed the Prince of Gotham storyline in Red Hood: Outlaw, he didnât have a team but he had an operation going on and people working FOR him not WITH him. In my opinion thatâs better for Jason (if you would like to see me review that storyline let me know).
There is a lot happening story wise and I am finding it more and more difficult to continue talking about Jasonâs moments here without giving context so I am going to resume what happened between Donna leaving to save Joey and Jasonâs next appearance in this issue. Here we go, Brain tells Monsieur Mallah that he decided to âhelpâ Twister take down the Titans because he wants to use Brother Bloodâs Blood Pool because he is dying, Twister goes back to her familyâs home and we get to see how brainwashed she is, her family is shocked to see her and they are also the ones that took care of Cyborg while he was unconscious, Cyborg leaves to find the Titans but Twister sees where he left to, she tells the Brotherhood where he might have gone to but protects her family by not telling them that they were the ones that protected Cyborg in the first place and Donna was able to save Joey. I think that was everything.
We see Jason again when he is just outside Brother Bloodâs Church with Kory (who is giving him a lift) and Beast Boy. But because life canât be easy for them the Brotherhood of Evil teleports there and a fight ensues. Kory takes the lead and Jason gets to work.
Kory praises Jason for his work here not because she canât do anything but because she is seeing that a kid is doing an excellent job. Make no mistake, she is the one with experience but she is nice and gives credit when its due.
Cyborg arrives and the fight continues. We see Beast Boy warning Jason about some of the villainsâ powers and Jason being the excellent Robin that he is pays attention and escapes Plasmusâ touch.
I might not think that Red Hood is a team player but Robin Jason absolutely is, and the Titans are nice and care for his safety.
While all of this was happening, Cyborg had made his way to the Church and there he gathers all kinds of information including the location of Brother Bloods main Church in the US. He also makes the alarms sound so everyone leaves because he set up the Church to blow up. Somewhere else Monsieur Mallah is threatening to kill Brain after the later insults him again. And there is where this issue ends.
In issue #28 Jason and the rest of the Titans appear after several pages of Mother Mayhem being a creep, Azrael the angel rising and trying to resurrect Brother Blood through the power of prayers, people watching the live broadcasting of the event and Dick trying to break free from his own head but as soon as he does it Mother Mayhem brainwashes him right away.
The Titans are back in their tower where we see Wally again but that is not all, Frances Kane and Robotman come in too. After all the people who are willing to fight get together the Titans make their way to Brother Bloods Church.
Itâs in the jet with Wally that we see Jason and this time he gets to talk too! Jason is talking about how much braver the Titans are compared to him but Wally calms him down by saying that even though he has been doing this for a while he is also scared.
The fact that Jason joined the Titans on another adventure without mentioning it to Bruce is funny to me, he was probably so happy that Donna called him again! Maybe Jason was more bored of being with the Bat than he let on and maybe he didnât feel appreciated enough or heard. I also like to think that Donna got Jasonâs number through Dick, like do you remember that Dick gave Jason his number if he ever wanted to talk shit about the Bat with him? What if they did talk and then Dick put Jasonâs number on the Titansâ data base? That would be cool and really sweet!
Jason continues to be a team player and being useful during the fights, he has the Titansâ back as much as the Titans have his.
They fight their way in Brother Bloodâs Church and once there they find a dude called the Confessor with Arella (Ravenâs mother) but he tells the Titans that she is dead. Somewhere else though is where the real trouble is at, between Azrael and Raven, Brother Blood has finally been resurrected.Â
Itâs in the last page where Brother Blood is looking all mighty and powerful that Dick seems to have broken free from his brainwashing once more.
Thatâs the end of that issue and this part of the post. This one was super difficult to write and itâs even longer than part one, I hope I didnât make it super difficult to read. At some points I felt like I was explaining too much and in others too little. I guess itâs very difficult to show how one character participates in a story without giving context but I just didnât want this post to be too plot heavy.
These issues had some cool Jason moments but the ones in issues #29 to #31 are even better!

In a few hour's the spoiler leaks are going to be released for the final chapter of Attack on titan manga and the official translation on April 9th so before all that happens what are you're thoughts and predictions between the character's and the end of the storyline?
https://ww7.readsnk.com/chapter/shingeki-no-kyojin-spoilers-raw-chapter-139/.
Hello Kian ! I see several of your questions about the ending and I must say I was lost myself with everything happening. However, I think I elaborated a good theory now !
Theory number 1: Eren is alive
This is the theory I acknowledge the most. Many people say that Eren not dying would be too strange after he already survived so much times to his expected deaths, but I donât think so. Isayama loves to take some clichĂŠs and to twist them:
Here is a brief list:
- The MC not dying in the first episodes
- The power of will and friendship (which is shown to be useless in the Trost arc)
- The guy protecting the girl (Mikasa is Erenâs bodyguard, not the contrary)
- The main trio sticking together until the end
- The MC being  special /being the  chosen one  (Eren is an usurpator)
Something very used in films/books is to use the absence of body as a way to cancel the absolute truth of a death. By showing us a body, Isayama can fool us by transgressing this common rule of  body=dead .
Also Erenâs death in chapter 138 was just serving Mikasaâs development arc climax. It didnât solve any matter of their world.
You know I feel like Eren was very relaxed when he saw Mikasa approaching to kill him. He probably already knew what she was going to do and even closed his eyes when she did it (you can see it since on the last panel, Eren has his eyes closed). I feel like if Eren acted this way, itâs because he transferred his consciousness to his body (all this time his head was controlling the titan so he may have regenerated a head on his body). It would explain why this concept was introduced to us with Reiner in season 3 and then never used again.
Plus, Grisha said everything would go along to Erenâs plan, but if Eren didnât succeed, the Rumbling is stopped and hell awaits eldians: they will be killed after what happened, considered too dangerous, more than they already were. And even if the titan power is removed, there will still be a large part of hate and of revenge in the Rumbling survivorsâ hearts. I donât believe the ÂŤÂ Code Geass theory  which says that Eren did the rumbling so the world could see Eldians defending it, and stand united with Mahrs against him (in the role of the bad guy), especially since some Eldians sided with Eren and that he exposed them in Revelio or even in Paradise with his devoted Yeagerists. Itâs not realistic at all and it doesnât fit nor Erenâs character, nor SNK spirit.
Eren had defined goals: ÂŤÂ exterminate them all , and thatâs what he did, he doesnât seem to want to stop the rumbling on this panel:
Isayama said he didnât like characters who werenât true to their goals, that let the story change their plans and motivations too easily. He wouldnât give to his MC the traits of a writing he despise.
Another reason why I believe the guy is alive is because his POV was hidden all this time. Whatâs the point of not giving to us Erenâs perspective while his final battle, when it would have been more powerful, if you did not have a big secret/plot twist generator to hide ? I think Eren and Ymir, who smiles like a creep in 138, manipulated everyone: the way Armin came with all the titan shifters in 137 with the help of Ymir was already really suspicious. Kruger, for example, had no reason to stand against Eren.
Chapter 137 was Armin, 138 was Mikasa so we will surely get Eren perspective for 139. And it will be weird if we have it while the guy is dead. Of course weâll see what happened in chapter 130 between Eren and Historia (I canât wait for their POVs) and Historiaâs baby. The final panel makes me even more sure that Eren is still alive otherwise who on earth would say ÂŤÂ You are free  to a new born child ? Eren x Freedom is canon.
⢠The Attack Titan
We know the path is a place out of time. Itâs in this place that titans are sculpted by Ymir, and thatâs why I think it makes sense for Eren to be the first owner of that titan: the attack titan is the only one who ascends in the past instead of descending in the future. If physically it seems to be passed down following the classical timeline, all of it is actually playing in the paths. The Attack Titan was only possessed by rebels, directly influenced by Erenâs mindset. It disappeared at a time, and it was also a part of Ymirâs titan: itâs her rebellious part designed to ÂŤÂ attack  the world 2000 years later. I think Isayama might add depth again to the title of the story in 139.
⢠Major deaths
I canât help but think: why did Eren let Mikasa cut his head and even indicated his location with titan marks ? I think that itâs possible he wants his last friends to fly away from the battle, thinking they have won when they didnât, so that he can restart the Rumbling without killing them. The survivors would be Levi, Mikasa, Armin and probably Annie. I think Reiner will die to let Gaby eat him, so that Falco and Gaby, representing the future, can be saved.
It makes sense for Reiner to sacrifice himself for his little cousin: he lived for the ones he loved even if he didnât wish to live himself, and since Gaby represents the new generation, hope, and that she was the potential inheritor of the Armored Titan, I am convinced she is the one who will eat him.
After that the most probable thing is that Levi and Mikasa, who grew incredibly closer, will live together, same for Annie and Armin. Eren will achieve the Rumbling then go back to Historia and we will have that Akatsuki no Requiem ending.
However, a darker possibility is that everyone except Falco and Gaby might die. I am in denial đâđť
But, I ask myself how Eren will make titans disappear. I think he might have plotted something with Ymir, after all isnât she free from King Fritz now ? Or maybe Falco will eradicate the worm (bird vs worm is kinda obvious). However I do not think the people transformed into titans will turn back to normal, itâs not Isayamaâs style to ÂŤÂ bring back  dead characters, it would make Jeanâs and Connieâs deaths less tragic. I think that only shifters will loose their ability and the 13 years thing.
Theory 2: if Eren is dead
⢠Ymirâs manipulation
I donât wanna believe it but what if all of this was Ymirâs plan ? If he IS dead, itâs Ymir who is the mastermind and manipulated him so that the parasite would die and that she could get out off the paths. ÂŤÂ I took the worldâs freedom to gain mine  what if itâs YMIR TALKING in 133 ? She could even had sent the dream to Mikasa in 138 so that she would know WHERE Eren was and kill him, all of this after Ymir took revenge on the world. Remember, the titan who protected Zeke came from earth, and Ymir entered in contact with ÂŤÂ the source of all organic life , which means she could be the one behind the birds we keep seeing, including the one on Mikasa dream. She could be smiling because her plan WORKED.
Also remember in the paths where Eren was talking to the Alliance ? He was in his kid Eren form, like Ymir, we didnât see his eyes, showing his slavery and a strange alike-look. Ymir was standing right next to him, in the exact same position, mirroring him as if he was a sort of reflection/puppet of hers. Everybody thought the contrary until now, that Ymir followed Eren. While she was here, Eren was saying that the only way to end all of this was to take his life: what if Ymir made him say that ?
It makes even more sense when Ymir helped Armin with summoning shifters and that they also had their mouths donât moving.
⢠Eldian Society ?
The only way to resolve ďżź everything if Eren is dead is to create an Eldian empire domination with the rest of the world being weak and wiped out. Everybody would live on Paradise and would be teached about the cycle of hate and the heroes who stopped the Rumbling as new Helos, giving us an explanation of that picture in the opening (it could also be Erenâs society as well meant to not repeat the same mistakes as well)
I hope you liked it ! Letâs not suffer too much during the waiting and organize cottagecore RM and EH weddings with the beach Aruannie one instead of crying đđťââď¸

Hiya đ I find it fascinating when people point out stuff about main characters that are brushed over and was I was wondering whatâs your top reasons you dislike Alina and what scenes made you dislike her / made no sense.
Well I don't dislike Alina in the show but in the books I do think she is badly written. But here are some things that made the book character less appealing to me than the show.
I think the main one is her complete lack of agency. She very rarely makes any decisions for herself and just seems to go along with what everyone else (mostly male characters) say. There is a problem and instead of Alina being the one to make a decision or think of a solution she is told this is what we are going to do by either, M*l, Nikolai or the apparat. She is pushed around the plot by others actions instead of taking control herself and so often appears more as a puppet than as a commander or influential person in herself. For example in the show Alina is the one who tells M*l that they should seek the stag and kill it for it's amplification powers before the darkling does. Yet in the books this decision isn't hers but M*l's and Alina just goes along with it. There are also several instances where she clearly doesn't agree with the course of action or doesn't want to do something and yet she does it anyway, an example of this is when Nikolai and M*l want to attack the Volcra nest in the fold. She clearly has qualms about it but ends up folding to their will, another example is M*l insisting that once the fold and the darkling are destroyed that they seek a way to remove the amplifier, again this is something Alina doesn't want to do but she agrees with M*l and doesn't tell him her true desire. So what we end up with is a female protagonist who very much seems to be a pawn to the male characters in the book.
Another thing I disliked about the character's storyline is that she was often the victim of men, held captive and used to their advantage and this included one the supposed heroes. The darkling takes her captive twice wanting to use the amplifiers and control her to meet his own goals, Nikolai also at one point takes her captive and only really gives her freedom back to her because she agrees to help him, and the apparat takes her captive so that he can use her to gain religious power over the masses. She also never gets herself out of these situations, she just accepts her situation and waits to be rescued, for others to save her so that they too can use her for their own gain. I find this theme of her either being a victim of men or the pawn of one really worrying.
Another issue with the way she is written which again ties into the two above is that she is made far too dependant on M*l. Not only does she make herself very ill by suppressing her powers to stay with M*l but when her powers are revealed her refusal to let go of her attachment to M*l means that she struggles to master her powers, she becomes physically unable to summon because her refusal to let M*l go. Later in book two and three she spends a lot of time pining after him and getting in arguments about their positions of power. M*l feels useless and resents Alina's new position and power, he wants things to go back to how they were. He really does hold her back in many ways and this really should have been a love that they both grew out of but instead despite it being made obvious that they don't really fit together they both refuse to let the other go which means one or the other has to make sacrifices in order for them to be together. Not only that but Alina often puts M*l's needs, wants and safety above the greater good, rather than save the grisha or other vulnerable people she will safe M*l even going so far as to let 30-40 innocent people die in the fold so that she can save his life. This co-dependant relationship that she has with M*l is very unhealthy and toxic which would be ok if this was recognised within the narrative and then steps were taken to fix it, but instead this relationship is presented as some grand love story despite how damaging it truly is to Alina. In the Tv adaption they show us that Alina can be very happy and actually thrive without M*l in ep 5, its the happiest we ever see her and the most confident, yet she never gets this opportunity in the books.
Alina is also very insecure and jealous and we often see her pitted against other females, in particular Zoya. If there is one thing I really am not a fan of its authors pitting women against women particularly when it is over a man. Throughout all of the books Alina is insecure that Zoya is more beautiful than her and is insecure about her own looks, particularly when is comes to M*l, she is often jealous believing M*l will be turned by other pretty girls instead of him staying loyal to her. She often worries that she won't be good enough as the Sun Summoner and that the people will come to hate her. Again all of this would have been fine if it were limited to just the beginning of her story arc and it was something she overcame, but she never really does. She often comes across as being quite sulky as well. There was this one quote that I kept seeing in the tag that Alina says which is 'I am the Sun Summoner. It gets dark when I say it does.' Obviously before reading the books I kept wondering the circumstances of her saying this. It is a bit of a badass quote so naturally I was imaging all kinds of grand, dramatic scenarios, her shouting it across the battlefield to the darkling, her saying it in a war meeting as they are making plans as a way of instilling hope and confidence in her troops. So you can imagine my disappointment when it is actually said whilst she is lying outside on the ground, sad and feeling sorry for herself. When presented with a problem or a wrench in a plan she doesn't rally her team and try to come up with a solution instead she just sulks which as a reader I found very frustrating. The thing is both Alina and M*l are written as rather realistic teenagers, but the problem is this doesn't fit the world they are living in. They live in a world based off imperial russia and yet the characters do not behave as if they are, instead they act like they are modern day teenagers attending high school with petty jealousy and childhood crushes.
There is also her identity as a grisha and relationship with the grisha. One of the more interesting aspects of the grisha trilogy is the grisha's story, their oppression and their fight to be recognised as human beings and equals. Yet Alina shows very little care for the Grisha. In fact to me it seems like the author just made Alina grisha to serve the plot. Alina is grisha because the narrative needs her to be, they need her to be powerful enough to defeat the villainous darkling and destroy the fold. Instead of striving to improve things for the Grisha Alina supports the monarchy that has spent centuries oppressing them. The moment LB no longer needs Alina to be grisha she is stripped of the identity and the grisha are left in their misery in a world that still hunts, kills and enslaves them.
Alina is also often punished in the narrative by other characters but also by herself. She is often shamed for the attraction she felt towards the darkling and is called things like stupid girl. Not only is she blamed for falling for the darkling's manipulation she is also told she is greedy and power hungry for seeking out the amplifiers and political power. It's a very twisted message that is sent because we are told she is seeking the amplifiers to stop the villain which is a heroic cause and yet we are also told that she is doing out of greed. There seems to be this message that women should not seek power or a change in their position because that means they are greedy and evil.
Then after three books of the protagonist being used as a chess piece by the men in the story she gets one of the worst endings a heroine could. Both Nikolai and M*l get what they want in the end but its at a cost to Alina, Nikolai gets the Ravkan throne and M*l gets the quiet farm life with Alina as his wife. But Alina loses her powers and the position of power she got with them. The two things she explicitly asks for and tells us she desires, her position as general of the second army and her powers/amplifiers. In fact she even tells us in the second book that given a choice she would not give up her powers not even for M*l. Yet that is what happens and worse than that the narrative tells us that she was wrong and greedy for seeking power and influence, they present this ending she gets as a happy one because she gets to spend her life with M*l living a nice normal life. As a reader I found this difficult to except because the character had told us on many occasions that it was not what she wanted, we are shown often how miserable she is without her powers and yet we are expected to believe that this was some wonderful fairytale ending for her when it seems like whilst the men got their happy ever afters it was at the expense of Alina.
There is probably more but before this turns into a full on rant I think it best to leave it here.

April 2021 Picks
And weâre back with the end to another month. April! Wow! Lots more great picks to talk about this time. Lots of new ones to the list too. So, letâs dive in!
Spoiler territory ahead!
THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER
or should I say Captain America and the Winter Soldier
I just finished the finale last night, so it felt right to start off with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. I really enjoyed it and I feel the episodes got stronger as the series went on. Each one felt like a mini-movie and I was upset it was over and had to wait another week for another one. I think the finale was my favorite. Especially the reveal of Sam as Captain America. I love his suit, his speech and the montage of everyone watching him. The last part of the episode was definitely my favorite and one I can watch on repeat. I loved seeing happy Bucky and him goofing off with the kids in Louisiana. He deserves so much happiness as he has now accepted heâs no longer who he once was. Bucky and Samâs relationship is fantastic and I canât wait to see it more. I know thereâs a possibility of a second season and they have to be in a future MCU movie. Regarding the villain, I feel I was confused for most of the show as to what their objective was. Iâm curious if this is because they had to reshoot parts during the pandemic. I also am mad with Sharon. Like what happened with her? She is definitely the true villain of the show. I also donât love that we havenât seen the end of Walker (but Wyatt Russell did a fantastic job). I also loved Torres and I hope he becomes the next Falcon. Definitely so different vibes from Wandavision, but just as good!
THE IRREGULARS
This is a show that more people need to be talking about! It was SO GOOD! I feel like I heard some buzz about it when it first came out, but not much after. It follows the teens featured about who live on the streets during Victorian London. The leader of their group, Bea gets approached by Dr. John Watson (thatâs right...as in Sherlock and Watson) to take on a case that has more supernatural qualities. The story takes off from there. I think the group dynamic was fantastic. There wasnât a character I didnât like and each one brought something else important to the group (which they even bring up towards the end of the show). [Iâve watched a few cast interviews since finishing the finale and they seem like they get along really well in real life too.] There is a kind of love triangle, but it didnât bother me and was over fast. I did like both combinations though. Lots of twists and turns along the journey. I have no idea if there will be another season, but there should be. It didnât end on a major cliffhanger, but definitely ended in a way where it could continue nicely. Come on Netflix.Â
HBOâS THE NEVERS
From one show set in Victorian times to the next. The Nevers just premiered on HBO and HBO Max earlier this month. It follows an ensemble of characters, similar to other HBO shows, ranging from characters who are called âthe touchedâ to men in government who are against them. Being âtouchedâ means they have a special talent or power, which can range from healing to speaking other languages, being extremely tall, or being an expectational inventor (I seriously love Penance. I just donât know how to explain her ability). Amalia True and Penance Adair are two of the main characters and they help bring in others who are touched to a remodeled orphanage that is a safe haven for people like them. Of course there are those who are against them existing. This seems to be at least two groups as someone is abducting and experimenting on some of the touched, but we donât know who they are...yet. I love the fusion of a historical setting with a fantasy element. I am very excited to see where the show is headed. I also love seeing so many of my favorite British actors on the screen together.   Â
ONCE UPON A TIME IN WONDERLAND
Time for a throw back. Fans of ABCâs Once Upon a Time might remember the short lived spin off following Alice in Wonderland (and some of Aladdin). It only lasted for one season of 13 episodes, but I remember loving it and I am so happy I can rewatch it on Disney Plus. It reminds me of why I enjoyed OUAT so much and I think this show deserved another season or more crossover with the original show. (Luckily the Knave got that opportunity.) I think it should have aired as a summer show or when OUAT was on hiatus, this way more fans would have tuned in. It is something Iâll believe forever.Â
Anyway, Iâll stop ranting now... I love Alice. I think sheâs a badass and a fierce warrior. If you follow some of my posts on my other blog, Lydia-yougowith-Stiles, youâll know that I love a warrior romance and Cyrus and Alice fit that perfectly (even if they are apart for much of the series). I also love Aliceâs hair and outfits. Everything about her is cool. Her relationship with the Knave is one of my favorite friendships ever. I think they balance each other out so well and how they spend most of the journey together. Back in the day, I totally shipped them, but now I definitely donât. (Even though I donât love Anastasia.) This is definitely worth the watch if youâve ever heard of Once Upon a Time or not. There is very cheesy CGI especially for 2013, but once you get pass that youâll love it.Â
ZOEYâS EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST
It was on a longer break than I expected, and I didnât miss it as much as I thought I would (which I know doesnât sound good for a show), but I am still loving all the episodes this season. It feels like there are more musical numbers, which I love. Mandy Moore is killing it with the choreography. There are so many amazing moments. I also was a big fan of the newest glitch episode. Everyone is so talented and I also like that weâve started to hear from more like Jenna and Tobin. Leif has become one of my favorites. I donât love the new neighbor next door, but I think weâre done with his storyline. Iâm not loving the Zoey love triangle, but I do like her with either Simon or Max. She seems really happy with Simon now. (FYI: I havenât watched the most recent episode yet. The glitch one was my latest.) Canât wait for more!  Â
KUNG FU
CWâs newest show this month was Kung Fu, which I just learned was a reboot. It follows Nicky who returns after 3 years to her home in San Francisco. Her family has mixed feelings as she has had no contact with them for the last 3 years. She is now a Kung Fu master and warrior, out to avenge her mentorâs death and stop a villain from acquiring mythical weapons. The show gives me Arrow vibes every time I watch it. It has similar flashbacks each episode to an earlier time in Nickyâs life. While Nickyâs mission is different, the style just gives me early seasons of Arrow vibes, which I am not complaining about. It stars Legaciesâ Alyssa Chen, who I didnât love on Legacies, but instantly fell in love with Nicky. I think sheâs a bad ass character and love how sheâs fighting for the underdogs on the streets of San Fran, while also taking down a bigger evil. The love triangle is heating up and Iâm definitely team Henry (even though thereâs some mystery there). I think heâs great and once again we have an awesome warrior romance. They balance each other so well and itâs only been like 3 episodes. Now theyâve also been sleuthing together and itâs just amazing.Â
NANCY DREW
Are you sick of hearing me talk about CWâs Nancy Drew? I hope not because Iâm going to fangirl again. I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH! I canât wait till Wednesday comes and I tune in a little after it starts, so then I can fast forward on my DVR. Then when the episode is over I basically start it all over again and watch select scenes that were awesome. (More specifically, they tend to be Nancy and Ace scenes because I love them and weâre entering so much angst I donât know if my heart will be able to handle it!!!)Â
Iâll say it a thousand times: THIS CAST IS EVERYTHING! Their dynamic is amazing. You can have any match ups and itâll be a great time. There is not one person I donât like. I was so upset that there wasnât a new episode last week (especially because it was my birthday). I loved the last one with the Hardy Boys and that Nace reveal! OMG! Iâm so sad that Grant has left again because we barely had him, but I feel heâll eventually come back. He has to. I loved the ending when he spoke to Thom by signing to him. (My heart!) I seriously canât say enough great things about this show. It is not your typical CW show and deserves more love and views. So happy a third season has already been confirmed!!Â
LAST NOTES
Just started Shadow and Bone on Netflix and am loving it! Iâm sure Iâll have an entire post dedicated to it when Iâm done. (Currently going to start episode 6.) I have no background on the universe or the books (just what my sister is filling me in with as we watch). I definitely plan on reading Six of Crows after this!
So what are you enjoying? Let me know. Iâm always looking for more shows to add to the list! Can never have enough.Â

The followup to the Thoughtâ˘
"Ugh." You say, waving to the screen. "Look at that, now that's who should have been the main character-"
"Oh?" I say, a small glowing figure appearing in front of you. "I can show you that if you want, wish granted." I wave my magic wand, and you blink to find yourself watching a different universe's show.
It's about a blond boy, with a minor superpower that's difficult to work with. He only has one friend, with major anxiety. Both of them want to be heroes, which is about the coolest and nicest thing anyone can be in this world.
But the blond boy is only in middle school. He doesn't get the best grades, he's a bit of a class clown, a bit of a delinquent. He's not exactly cool or over powered, but his earnest, bright nature endears him to the watchers and readers of the story. He's nice, and not worried about competition. He'll put cheering up his best friend over studying- and he'll put just enjoying video games together over training his power on his own.
He doesn't, by the way, train on his own. He makes meager progress in the class provided, and works hard when he's thinking about it, but he honestly doesn't even know where to start with his power.
He takes the entrance exam, and by some manner of luck, manages to permeate through blasts and rubble while shoving other students out of the way. He's used to watching out for his best friend, at least, and that carries over in his natural, if clumsy, attempts to help others here.
With more luck, he is accepted into the school on those points. So is his best friend, though they're in different classes. He still doesn't have many friends, but they meet a new girl in his bf's class: she's gorgeous and powerful- the most raw energy in any of their quirks, and no anxiety or complications holding her back.
She's a bit of a ditz, though, a bit much for others to hang around all the time, so even though she should be a shoe in fit the most popular, she slides easily into their group instead.
The fandom likes her a lot, and you feel impatient. This isn't the story you wanted to see, not really.
"Don't worry," I say. "Time flies when you're actually a school story instead of a daily battle with villains story."
And it does- they compete in the first sports festival. The main character, to little surprise, doesn't do well. But he manages to keep himself and the others smiling and laughing through it, and that brings the attention of the mentor.
The mentor that you like, of course, the mentor you believe was right.
The mentor trains the main character. It's hard, but he can actually break down what exactly he needs to improve on, and now that he has support, the main character takes it seriously. Like all children do, he rises to the expectations on him when he's given the material to do so.
Not made to find the material. The kid would have never dreamed of just assuming and asking such a high ranking hero to focus on him. Rather like another boy, but we'll get to him later.
It's another year. The girl tried her best at the beauty pageant. The best friend tried his best at the liscence exam. The main character has still been training at his internship.
"His second year." You say, thinking. "Now this is when All Might shows up in the timeline, ten months before February in what would be Mirio's second year."
I raise an eyebrow, but wave my magic wand.
All Might does appear. The mysterious top hero, always in the background- ads, all over the mentor's office. They used to work together, but no one in this universe knows anything more than that.
The mentor and the principal happily tell the main character that the number one hero wants to meet with him directly! The boy is nervous, of course, excited, of course, and a tad confused.
But meet they do.
And offer his quirk, he does.
The episode and chapter end on that, of course, and you feel a surge of excitement. Finally!
You look around and realize others in this fandom do not see it that way. Many critique the twist as coming out of nowhere, with no build up that it was even possible, breaking the established rules for no reason. Many others are proud of how much the main character has to work at the difficult power, and do not want him to have a second before he masters this one. Some feel it's a trap- a secret test of character, or a villain in disguise who will ruin him. Some wonder if it's more metaphorical- he's offering the power of support and more guidance, maybe a connection, but not his literal superpower.
You do not know how to feel about it, but you know this will be for the better. He will be perfect for it.
At the beginning of the next update, the boy turns down the quirk. Grateful, more than he could say, but he's worked so hard for his own power and he's not even up to snuff with it yet. He's unsure he's the best option. The girl, after all, is used to weilding such power, maybe he should try her, maybe he should keep looking.
The top hero nods, and asks if he can visit again later, if he can find no other. The boy is a good hero after all, and maybe he needs to believe in himself as much as he is telling his friend to. It will be hard to train a second quirk, yes, but he can manage. It will make him stronger and pay off, after all.
The boy agrees, tentatively. No one can really say no to the number one hero, after all.
"Ok." You say, nodding. "There's an opening. It can build more, since that's how the story is here, way more slowburn."
I shrug. That's what happens when you start the story three years early, but whatever.
The story goes on. The main character does better in the sports festival, but not by any measure good. His friend finds a mentor, a character popular. Much warmer than the blond's mentor. The girl gets a really good mentor, a top tenner.
And then they start to get really good. They're used to training now, and getting it all bit individually and together. The mentor is motivated as of by fury, pushing more and more. And the main character grows to reach it.
Another year. They're seniors, now. Just one year left before they're pros, but they're already about at that level. They're called the Big Three.
The third year is different. Chaos every few weeks. A class of first years attacked.
"Oh, because All Might is still looking for a successor among the students- checking over the freshmen but they won't be able to compare."
I hum in a way that could be interpreted as agreement.
The sports festival. Finally, real victory. They do so well, even with one anxious at crowds. And one that is seemingly allergic to staying clothed. They do well.
The chaos continues, always at the sides. The others in this universe who follow the story talk about that and the offer the top hero made. Is he getting weaker? Did that power leak somehow and now someone wants it?
The tension grows, especially for you. If the hero doesn't give the main character the power before the summer....
The main character doesn't get the power before the summer. The hero falls on tv while the blond and his friends watch in horror.
After the summer, the main character decides to meet the freshmen. You wonder who will replace a certain someone's seat, or if this is playing the original quirkless hero storyline.
When the main character challenges the class of freshmen and you see that sparking green, you seethe.
"I said I wanted Mirio to have OfA! Why is he-"
"Actually," when I speak, you cannot. "You asked for him to be the main character. He still is. A beloved one, even."
"You know what I meant!"
"Perhaps. But then you asked for another change, and so I allowed All Might to meet with him a few days before he would have in the old timeline. He had a chance, he turned it down. Why are you mad at him having his own ambitions and autonomy?"
"He was supposed to take it! He's the worthier option, and you know it."
"What makes him worthy?"
"He works hard!"
"So does Izuku."
"He worked hard before he was offered everything by All Might!"
"Yes," I will admit. "Though, that's only because he met Sir before he met All Might. Were you so focused on how slow it was going that you didn't actually watch what he was doing?"
You will not admit to anything, still angry.
"He'll get another chance." I remind you.
You huff, but the story continues on.
The main character takes a liking to the boy you despise. So does the fandom, dubbing him the cutest little kohai. He's awkward and eager and sunny, like a fusion of the main trio.
He's also impulsive, and on their first patrol together they run into who will obviously be the big bad of the arc- and his abused daughter.
The fandom is split on if the story is going to go with a "In this arc, the blond must pass his experience on patience to a boy who it all about speed and too naive" or if it's "In this arc, it's the mouth of babes- the boy will inspire the main character to do good more impulsively."
You sit and wait for it to be "the boy will finally fork over the power he's now spent over a year working to hold and use to the real main character."
The raid happens. We finally see how the main character met his best friend. It's very sweet. The girl is a lead character and gets focus on her fight too, though the two freshmen working with her don't really. There's another funky freshman boy who turns out to be more like the best friend than we thought.
Finally, we get to the main fight.
And the main character is shot, quirk erased. For good, if the villain who's really not actually that good an example of a scientist is to be believed.
"Oh. What if the former top hero offers his power again, after this arc? It's about loss but always moving on?" The fandom asks. They aren't sure if the buildup to this is better than before, but it's certainly am interesting turn, and not as controversial as the last time.
The best friend saves the day by awakening right at the perfect moment to drag the teacher in. The quirk is kinda super deus ex machina for this arc though.
At the hospital, the mentor dies. The former number one hero is there.
The fandom wonders whether to hope or fear how long he'll wait to replace the mentor and the quirk.
You wait, knowing it's soon.
Then the freshman offers his quirk, and the fandom flips again.
"We should have known!" They cry. "He had super speed and strength the whole time, maybe the sparks are from his own quirk, but it's the same power! Oh, this hurts much more than just if it had been the retired hero!"
Once again, the fandom divides. Many can't bear to see the kohai they love shoved aside after this one moment. Will be be able to use his original power? Then they won't mind the strength for the blond. Some say to wait for his power to come back. A few pipe up about the possibility of him doing it quirkless. He has trained physically too, after all these years.
"No thanks," he says again. He does smile though- just like Sir told him to- and tells his kohai that heâll do great things with the power, just like All Might did. Tells him that he already has.
You're past the point of fury now.
"Why?" You demand.
"Keep watching." My tone is cold. "Keep watching, the next five months where he does nothing but babysit a girl in hopes she'll magically make himt not quirkless again. He doesn't even ask if he can be a quirkless hero. He doesn't even go to school to keep training. You demanded the other boy figure it out himself. This boy doesn't. He just hopes the same thing that did this to him can undo it."
You don't know what to say about that.
"Neither took it seriously in middle school. That's the nature of middle schoolers. Neither of them tried to go solo quirkless, when no support was provided. But they're both good kids. Hard workers. Heroic. They love each other, honestly, they're friends. It's sweet. And it's sad that it took me doing this for you to see it."
I shake my head.
"Sir Nighteye never saw how Mirio was much more like Izuku than All Might. That was his mistake, because he didn't know the meaning of worthy. Not that it was his choice to make even if he had. There's no magic to this. OfA isn't Excalibur or MjĂślnir. All sorts of people have had it. And All Might wasn't doing much to train before he found Nana ether, as much as he got into trouble. OfA is more about connections they have to each other. It's about people's relationships. As it happens, that just doesn't include Mirio and wouldn't be at its most meaningful if it did."
"You just are too much a Deku stan and hate Mirio-"
"Accuse me of hating Mirio again, and I will leave you here." I threaten, pointing my wand at you. "Now. Did you learn your lesson?"
You grumble, but you do nod.
"Good." I say, before waving my wand one last time. You're back where you were before, not a trace of me or magic.
The lesson, though, sticks.

If you interpret Kataraâs aggression towards Zuko as romantic affection, then you have some serious issues of your own. Is a very dangerous message for teenage girls indeed. People who ship Zutara have to seriously analyze how unhealthy the message of the pairing would be. Katara hated Zuko for a valid reason, and to twist it into something itâs not is massively disrespectful to both the character. The outdated and ridiculous notion that a girl who acts like she doesnât like a guy is simply âconfusedâ and âdenying her feelingsâ is so sexist and degrading. Take her emotions at face value. It's never been
Yawn. Boring. This is the same old tired argument Iâve heard a million times before--the one that proves a) you donât actually understand how relationships work, and b) youâve never read a single zutara meta in your life, because thatâs the only way you could seriously get the âgood girl is secretly in love with the bad boy and hopes to fix himâ read of a relationship that bares absolutely no resemblance to that particular collection of tropes either in the show or in our fandom.
But ok! Iâll bite, since you clearly want so badly to be educated and evidently donât have the time to watch the show yourself, nor the reading comprehension necessary to understand the sort of media analysis that goes on in a lot of atla and zutara-focused meta in this fandom.
Which probably means that anything I write here will fly right over your head, but oh well, what can you do?
At any rate, the first mistake youâve made here is assuming that I (or zutara shippers in general, but since you came into my inbox, Iâm going to be taking this just as personally as you clearly intended me to) interpret Kataraâs aggression towards Zuko as romantic at any point in the series prior to their reconciliation (after which point, there is no aggression from Katara aimed at Zuko for anyone, me included, to interpret romantically in the first place). I donât, and I never have, and neither does a vast majority of the zutara fandom in the spaces I frequent (which encompasses tumblr, occasionally twitter, and the very large zutara discord server Iâve been an active part of for two years now). Pointing out oddly suggestive tension in early parts of the series (such as the âIâll save you from the piratesâ and âyou rise with the moon, I rise with the sunâ lines, or the fact that Zuko wore Kataraâs necklace around his wrist for like nine episodes when there was absolutely no need for it) is just that--pointing out tension.
There doesnât need to be feelings for there to be tension, antagonistic or otherwise, but that tension is the foundation from which their relationship arc throughout the series grew, developed, and eventually evolved. This is what is generally known as relationship development, and it occurs when two characters go from having one kind of relationship to another within the course of the story.
For example, enemies, who become friends, who become lovers.
Now, your mileage may vary on this next part (although I really hope not, cause Y I K E S), but I, personally, think that âif a boy kisses you without your consent, but he really really loves you, then you owe it to him to love him back, especially if he just saved the world, and you should never expect an apology because since you suddenly decided you return those feelings, that means the violation of your boundaries was ok since clearly you really liked him all alongâ is a much more damaging message to send to young girls--and boys, to be frank, especially since learning about consent is hugely important at young ages--than âif a boy who was your enemy goes to great lengths to better himself, to the point where you forgive him for when he hurt you and become close friends with him, then itâs normal for those feelings to grow and change, even to the point of becoming romantic, and itâs ok to explore themâ.
And guess which one of those is canon to the AtLA finale?
Next, you say âKatara hated Zuko for a valid reasonâ as if that was ever in dispute. It wasnât--certainly not on my blog. I know there are some people who hate Katara because she was âtoo meanâ to Zuko, but I donât agree with them, nor do I associate with them, since I have no time, energy, or room in my life for Katara slander. However, do you know what the operative word is in that sentence? Hated. As in past tense. As in, âKatara used to hate Zuko, but by the end of the show that is no longer the case, and they are extremely close friends with a deep bond and multiple life-debts between themâ.
Why are you so insistent on not only denying Zukoâs hard-earned and bitterly fought for redemption, but also Kataraâs emotions and feelings, which you end this weirdly disjointed ask by insisting they be taken at face value?
And itâs actually really funny (ironic funny, not so much âha haâ funny) that you use the word âconfusedâ there, followed by the phrase âdenying her real feelingsâ, and then call that âsexist and degradingâ, as if that isnât exactly what happened in Kataraâs canon endgame in the show.
She said point blank that she was confused, she showed with her words, tone, and body language that she was not open to Aangâs romantic advances, she had completely forgotten about the last time heâd kissed her without her consent, rather than reflecting on her romantic feelings as one would expect of a girl whoâd been kissed by someone weâre supposed to believe sheâs had feelings for since book 1, and was completely taken aback by Aangâs reaction to the play and his weird believe that they âwere gonna be togetherâ, when she had never once indicated that she wanted to be with him in any romantic sense. And yet, he kissed her--and while she got angry about it and stormed off in the moment, he never apologized for crossing her boundaries, and they also didnât have a single significant scene together between that moment and the epilogue.
What happened to taking Kataraâs emotions at face value? What happened to how âsexist and degradingâ it is to assume that if a girl says sheâs confused, that must mean sheâs âdenying her feelingsâ? What happened to caring about Kataraâs agency, even a little bit?
Anyway, Iâm gonna wrap this up by saying: I do not believe Zuko and Katara shouldâve been making out in the finale instead. I actually hate the fact that the final shot of AtLA was a romantic kiss (particularly for such a poorly written pairing), rather than a shot of the gaang together like it should have been to show what the series was meant to be about. I think that focusing on the romantic relationships in the finale undercut an already weak ending to an otherwise great (not perfect, but certainly good enough that it deserved much better closure) show.
That said, I also think a Zutara kiss would have been more earned, at that point in both of their narratives. Because Kataraâs feelings had been the focus of their relationship throughout its entirety. Zukoâs feelings mattered, too, of course, (in stark contrast to how they were treated during his relationship with Mai), but Katara was the one who got to choose when and why and what she felt about him. She got to choose when to forgive him. She got to choose to help him, and to save his life, and her emotions were frequently the focus in a way they never were during her relationship with Aang, so nudging those into a more romantic light not only would have fit better with her character arc, it also would have been far less jarring to see that as the culmination of their respective storylines, rather than a romantic kiss coming out of nowhere when her very last scene with him was being kissed without her consent and storming off about it because it upset her.
My most fervent hope, anon, is that some day you actually watch the show, Avatar: the Last Airbender. Because Katara and Zuko are amazing characters, they have amazing storylines both separately and together, and itâs really a crime whenever someone misunderstands both of them so badly. I hope that when you do watch the show, you pay attention. You may see something amazing.

planning â coherence
I talk a big game about liking coherence in art, and itâs probably clear that I have an apophenic tendency to enjoy textual interpretation. And this might lead people to think that I have a preference for carefully planned and plotted art, or that I look down on the messy and improvisational. But this is actually almost the opposite of the case. Not because I donât really like coherence, but because artistic coherence is something more complicated than planning, and isnât even necessarily possible to achieve with planning.
The thing about improvisation, is that at its best itâs about finding the choice that feels right. I listen to jazz more than any other kind of music, and one of the reasons I like it so much is the exhilaration of someone landing on a musical idea that simultaneously makes a song feel bigger and more complete. A solo isnât fun if itâs just a bunch of disconnected ideas (similar to how whimsy isnât fun if it doesnât also âworkâ). Itâs fun if it picks up on the things that the other players are doing, or ideas that showed up earlier in the song, and then makes them feel like they go together. Even if they âgo togetherâ in the sense of being coherently discordant, eg repeating ideas that donât work multiple times. If beauty is fit, then the joy of improv is finding fit in unexpected places.
This goes for narrative too. In long-running stories like comics, book series, and TV shows, much is often made about whether certain choices were planned from the beginning. If things were planned, thatâs a reason for praise, and if things werenât planned, thatâs a reason for derision, either towards the showrunners or towards people attempting to interpret the work. Say, âThis plot point only happened because an actor wanted to leave the show. Therefore it has no meaning to read into.â But making things up as one goes is not what makes a story lose its plot, so to speak. Making things up is only a problem if the things the artist makes up donât go with what came before.
In Impro, a very excellent book about the craft of improvisation, Keith Johnstone calls this process of making-things-go-with-what-came-before âre-incorporationâ:
The improviser has to be like a man walking backwards. He sees where he has been, but he pays no attention to the future. His story can take him anywhere, but he must still âbalanceâ it, and give it shape, by remembering incidents that have been shelved and reincorporating them.
Johnstone is big on the idea that satisfying narrative depends on a sense of structure, and that reincorporation is one of the most important tactics for creating structure. To paraphrase him, a story where a character runs away from a bear, swims across lake, and finds a woman in a cabin on the other side, and âmakes passionate loveâ to her has no structure. Itâs just a series of events. Whereas if the bear then knocks the cabinâs door down and the woman cries out that itâs her lover, then suddenly it feels like a story. Because not only has the bear been reincorporated, it has been linked to the woman. From this perspective, if a story has no sense of reincorporation, or new developments donât make sense with what came before, then it will feel incoherent, no matter how planned out it was.
I also keep thinking about Paul Bouissacâs discussion of gags and narrative in The Semiotics of Clowns and Clowning. He explains that what makes a scene funny is not whether it strings a bunch of gags together, but how those gags are organized. To use an example from the book, itâs one thing for a clown to pretend to hurt its thumb, and ask for an audience member to kiss it. Itâs another thing for it to keep hurting different parts and then finally hurt its groin and act scandalized at the idea that someone might kiss it. Bouissac calls this sort of repetition âanaphorâ:
Anaphor is one of the main tools of textual consistency. In linguistics, it designates the use of pronouns or any other indexical units to refer back to another word or phrase in the text. It links together parts of sentences and bridges the grammatical gaps between clauses, which is a consequence of the linearity of language. In rhetoric, anaphors are repetitions of words or structures that build up the cohesion of discourse and create momentum toward a climax. In multimodal communication, words, gestures, objects, or musical tunes can play the same role by reminding the receiverâthat is, the spectator in the case of a performanceâof signs and events produced earlier in the act.
One of the things that fascinated me about Farscape as a teenager, was that in contrast to other scifi of the time, it made no pretenses of having been plannedâunlike say, Babylon 5. Or even shows like The X-Files, Lost, or Battlestar Galactica that gave you the âfeelingâ of a plan whether or not they had one, or were capable of following through. Farscape felt incredibly coherent, both in terms of theme and plot, but this coherence came about purely on the strength of the writingâs ability to ideate and then reincorporate. It would take someoneâs weird costume idea, like the villain having glowing rods that screw inside his head, and snowball that into a whole storyline where the villain is a half breed of one hot-blooded race and one cold-blooded race, and can only stay alive by thermo-regulating the inside of his brain. And then decide that his vendetta against the hot-blooded race has motivated his obsession with the protagonist since the first season. Yet these twists never feel like âret-conningâ in a pejorative sense, because it all feels narratively and thematically sensible. (Unsurprisingly, making the show was described as âmore like improv jazz than plotting out a symphonyâ).
None of which is to say that I dislike planning or polish, either. Stephen King, as a so-called âdiscoveryâ writer, famously writes off the cuff, without outlines. As he puts it in On Writing:
You may wonder where plot is in all this. The answerâmy answer, anywayâis nowhere. I wonât try to convince you that Iâve never plotted any more than Iâd try to convince you that Iâve never told a lie, but I do both as infrequently as possible. I distrust plot for two reasons: first, because our lives are largely plotless, even when you add in all our reasonable precautions and careful planning; and second, because I believe plotting and the spontaneity of real creation arenât compatible. Itâs best that I be as clear about this as I canâI want you to understand that my basic belief about the making of stories is that they pretty much make themselves. The job of the writer is to give them a place to grow (and to transcribe them, of course).
But his best stories feel like whatever bloat might have been generated from this narrative improvisation has then been pared down to what that improvisation was really getting at. And I canât lie, I get a particular joy from reading or watching something and feeling without a doubt that the artist is in complete control of my experience. It was one of the most gratifying aspects of rewatching The Wire recently: the feeling that the little meanings and foreshadowings I was seeing in each choice were almost certainly intended. Nothing is more satisfying to an apopheniac than feeling like the patterns you see are actually real. And nothing is more annoying than a story that tries to pull some sort of reveal on you (âDan is gossip girl!â âAngel is Twilight!â âRey is a Palpatine!â) that doesnât make any sense because it wasnât intended from the beginning. Just because those characters existed in the story before, doesnât make it good reincorporation. So if a story is a story because of structure, then if the choice is between a planned structure and no structure, the former is almost certainly going to be better.
Point is, itâs not really the process that matters. All creativity is improvisational in a sense, because all creativity involves making things up. What matters is how dedicated an artist is to the integrity of their work. If a writer has carefully planned their whole story out, with every twist and every theme clearly in mind, but canât adapt if they start writing and find out that something they planned doesnât actually work, thatâs one kind of failure mode. The narrative equivalent of designing a perfect castle and then building it on a swamp. On the other hand, if a writer tries to go with the flow, but canât reincorporate that flow, then that will be another failure mode. To the extent that I respond to improvisational art, itâs because improvisational art is often more attuned to these questions of whether something is moment-to-moment right. But what matters, above all, is the rightness. Thatâs what defines coherence. Whether there is a sense in the work that it is oriented around something, and whether the choices contribute to that something.
#posts: art#i could've also connected a pattern language to this#and the post about how it's the solution to high modernism#but hopefully the castle-on-a-swamp analogy will encompass that#the philosophy of 'here are things that generally work but also any solutions must be adapted their environment'

Book!Theon is Azor!Ahai, not Jon. It makes no sense narratively for Jon to be AA, and itâs the most stereotypical thing ever, and heâs already stereotypical, heâs the red flag for the audience. Theonâs chapters are full of hints, he has the perfect salt/smoke/stars/dragons thing at the end of ACOK, when he âdiesâ. His story is about destroying death, his entire narrative, with things that come from mythology and ancient literature, points to that. The show is trash, but donât you think that itâs a little weird that Theon is there at the end and then Arya comes out of nowhere and becomes AA? And what ending does she get? Exploring the unknown SEA with SHIPS? Being free and on her own? Maybe it doesnât make sense for her because itâs not for her. D&D already took everything else from Theon, they took this too. And even if heâs not AA, heâs still clearly connected to magic and all of that, he didnât go though so much for nothing, he didnât take his name back for the first time in his life, his name that literally means âgodlyâ, for nothing. He has something big to do, and itâs about himself, not Robb and the Starks. And heâs also so clearly connected to the politics of the north and of the iron islands, a villain was literally created for him, so I donât understand how can you say heâs not really important and all heâs got left to do is retire in a house and be sad. Of course he has a lot of trauma and thatâs important, but I donât like how people reduce him to that and act like just because those things happened, he canât do anything else
anon with no ill will and I swear I don't want to sound pedantic or anything but I, uh, never came to the conclusion you say I came from - that said let's go in order even if I think I already went through all the reasons why it makes literally no sense if it's anyone but jon, but let's start with one thing:
It makes no sense narratively for Jon to be AA, and itâs the most stereotypical thing ever, and heâs already stereotypical, heâs the red flag for the audience.
it's stereotypical.... to us maybe, but it is not to westeros. like, you're looking at it through audience-lens because it has been years and the show confirmed r+l=j and we all figured that shit out, but to westeros, the idea that the prince that was promised is a bastard guy serving on the wall aka a state-sponsored prison where people go to not die and is filled to non-desirables to society is... the least likely option in existence? no really, but again:
first thing that should quiet all doubts, when melisandre asks r'hollor to see azor ahai bc she wants to see stannis, r'hollor shows her jon snow and instead of going like 'uh wait why am I seeing another dude' she's like 'I want to see stannis but r'hollor shows me jon snow there must be some disturbance on the line', like she doesn't even consider for a second that it might be jon;
no one else has brought WITHIN THE NARRATIVE jon up as a likely candidate - they said stannis, they said dany, they said whoever but no one ever said hey jon snow might be AA, because again no one even suspects that it might be jon;
other matter that you're overlooking here: if theon is azor ahai.... it means that the rebellion basically was for nothing? because like the entire shtick with rhaegar targaryen's bad life choices⢠is that he was apparently a swell dude, then he read a book where somehow it was exactly explained how the apocalypse was gonna happen, he deduced that he was the guy who had to father AA/the prince that was promised and in order - first he doesn't care about fighting but suddenly after that he starts getting learned; - he immediately worries over having THREE children from which we can deduce from the narrative that as far as he knows in order to fight when the wights come he has to have three kids for three dragons and one of them is azor ahai; - the moment his wife can't have more than two even if he's sure that he already had the right one (aegon) he still runs off with lyanna to make sure he has the third because it's that important that HE rhaegar targaryen fathers the three heads of the dragon... to the point of starting a civil war and most likely giving arthur orders to make sure that the kid lives at all costs even if he thinks lyanna's kid is NOT AA; - let's remember that the entire schtick is also that 'he is the ptwp and his is the song of ice and fire' which means that this kid of rhaegar's is the person these books are titled after.
now, let's look again at tyrion's infamous quote which I always bring up in these cases but let's refresh our memory here Prophecy is like a half-trained mule. It looks as though it might be useful, but the moment you trust in it, it kicks you in the head now: given this, we can absolutely assume that no single prophecy in this book goes the way the person at the end of it interprets it... which means that rhaegar was wrong on a lot of accounts, but guess what, the thing is that one out of three of his kids is dead (if we count aegon as trueborn, if he's not then two on three but I think he's trueborn) and the one who hatched the eggs/has the dragon is DANY so he already was wrong on head of the dragon #1, and he can absolutely be wrong on aegon being tptwp which would mean mistake #2 and we should know about the prophecy, but one of his children being AA and his being the song of ice and fire looks a bit too much of a stretch to be incorrect and have AA being someone else's son also would be.... but if AA is jon ie the one he had for last that he was sure was not AA and who doesn't even have the targ name (nor the stark one) and no one suspects having that kinda ancestry then yes it fits exactly all the parameters and it still allows for rhaegar to have partially misinterpreted the entire thing even in large chunks but not enough to make it look like he was completely making shit up, which... I mean the long night is coming I don't doubt he had very good reasons to want to stop it; also, anon not to beat the dead horse, but: - jon's death fits all the prophecy parameters already there's the bleeding star, the smoking wound and the salt of the tears which btw is not obvious nor something you'd immediately do 2+2 about... which fits perfectly with the above - jon died and came back to life in the godforsaken show like he's literally the only idiot who resurrected in it and we're supposed to handwave it the way dnd did? - jon has a valyrian steel sword that he can handle while theon atm really doesn't - we could argue that ygritte could be a possible nissa-nissa contender though I mean maybe it could also be that he and val get hot and bothered and it turns out it's her or someone else and that hasn't happened yet but surely there's more evidence for that with jon than with theon - theon has like... povs in two books for a total amount of less than fifteen chapters, jon has at least ten chapters per book or so on, which just mathematically makes jon a main fiver character while theon is not and like I understand deconstruction and all but you don't make your ace in the hole mystical prince hero character someone who has had fifteen chapters total at most unless I remember wrong the amount he had in acok in comparison to someone who was a main throughout the entire thing - like guys I say it as someone whose third-fave char is theon, theon is not a main fiver⢠character and that's okay that's not the point, and with that I don't mean he's not important, I mean that he's not one of the five main ones that have most of the plot stuff on their shoulders and he's not THE main character, because if theon is AA then these books are named a song of theon greyjoy and considering that the main five are jon tyrion arya dany and bran I think it's highly not probable that at the end of it theon is the one character to rule them all
and that was for how jon fit the criteria, but theon doesn't fit them because again he doesn't have a number of chapters/povs that justifies such a plot twist, balon is certainly not rhaegar and I don't see how rhaegar reads a prophecy wrt balon and thinks it's about him, the heads of the dragon should be three and theon had three siblings two of which are dead and asha has no tie to the dragon storyline, this means that theon should be able to ride/command a dragon and we know that in theory just targs can and there's already three of them around - dany jon and aegon - and if anyone who's not a targ has a narrative reason to ride a dragon is tyrion not theon... and tyrion is a main fiver too, also there's the nissa-nissa/burning sword angle and as it is theon could absolutely use a bow again but a longsword with his hands maimed like that and no muscle mass would be a bit implausible, in order for the reborn prophecy to actually make sense it means his last adwd chapter should have smoke, salt and the bleeding star which it doesn't but jon's has so there's that
now, re what you said wrt theon:
Theonâs chapters are full of hints
not really? he doesn't have a tie to the magical storyline beyond his connection to bran. they have hints for a lot of things but that he's AA? idt so
he has the perfect salt/smoke/stars/dragons thing at the end of ACOK, when he âdiesâ
okay but then I could use the same argument for saying that AA could be davos when he survives blackwater because he says he woke up in wreckage of smoke in salty water, and then stannis has equally valid arguments bc he has the shiny sword and he's in dragonstone etc and we all know it's not stannis, also an AA death at the ending of acok when the topic has barely been introduced in dany's vision is entirely too early for me to drop that bomb
his story is about destroying death, his entire narrative, with things that come from mythology and ancient literature, points to that.
his story is about overcoming trauma and abuse and not dying in the process (which is why I think the show was trash) and okay but everyone in these books has something that comes from a mythology or ancient literature, like jaime brienne and c. all have arthuriana roots same as bran, doesn't make any of them a viable AA candidate
The show is trash, but donât you think that itâs a little weird that Theon is there at the end and then Arya comes out of nowhere and becomes AA?And what ending does she get? Exploring the unknown SEA with SHIPS? Being free and on her own? Maybe it doesnât make sense for her because itâs not for her.
considering that maisie williams was shocked that arya was AA and she also thought it made no sense and that dnd never thought theon had his own storyline while I can agree on the fact that it fits more for him as an ending than for arya, I don't think that means it makes him AA, same as I think that they gave sansa his storyline and possibly his confrontation with ramsay and I'm not 100% convinced on the last part anyway but that just means they didn't realize theon doesn't exist for the starks' storyline, also like.. in the show everyone but c. was in WF and theon was already dead when arya did her thing and honestly idt the battle of the long night will ever go like that anyway so idt even partially show truthing is bringing us anywhere
and even if heâs not AA, heâs still clearly connected to magic and all of that, he didnât go though so much for nothing, he didnât take his name back for the first time in his life, his name that literally means âgodlyâ, for nothing
I never said it was for nothing which I'll elaborate in a second and ofc he's connected to the magic storyline... because he's connected with bran's storyline and his last round of atonement has to happen through bran in the sense that since he was the one basically forcing bran out of wf now he most likely has to facilitate bringing him back or smth (surely not dying for him), but like whatever magical stuff he has going on it has to do with bran dot, not with AA which I still think he doesn't have a stricter text connection to than davos has for that matter and idt davos is AA as I think I made clear
He has something big to do, and itâs about himself, not Robb and the Starks.
never said he didn't, and I also said that I wasn't going to speculate in detail about what theon has to do because I don't think there are enough text elements to say it now but there will be when wow comes out for sure, but like again I don't want to make predictions when I don't have the elements and wrt theon's themes/possible canon ending etc I always said that he most likely isn't going to inherit the islands but that he'll do something huge before the books are done which is gonna be tied to the northern storyline and possibly to bran because he has to go specular to acok - acok is his downfall, adwd is 'I'll find myself again', wow+ados have to be what would theon do if he decides his own thing while being his own person, or recycling my old THEON HAS HEGELIAN THEMES IN HIS STORYLINE acok = thesis, adwd = antithesis, wow+ados = synthesis so obviously he has something huge in the plans.... I just don't think it means he's AA
And heâs also so clearly connected to the politics of the north and of the iron islands, a villain was literally created for him, so I donât understand how can you say heâs not really important and all heâs got left to do is retire in a house and be sad
aaand here we get to the point which is that... I never said that? I honestly never said that? I said he has to overcome his trauma and live and thrive and be happy after that. if he retires in a house at the end of ados after he does whatever he has to do in the main plot it's going to be because it's what he wants to do and most likely he and jeyne are going to be adorbs while doing it together or smth or if he goes back to the islands and advises asha then he's going to be happy doing that too, but like... the entire point of theon's sl is that he overcomes that horrendous abuse while not being a perfect good victim⢠throughout and still be happy after and gain his redemption? that's what I always said. I never said that now he can just retire and be sad. trauma recovery is becoming happy after getting over your trauma. not being sad. and like.... sometimes not getting amazing mythological things but just being happy by yourself is actually a goal? again, grrm is a lapsed catholic. if I know that breed and I do, he doesn't think redemption and happiness are in shortage at the supermarket. and in order for theon to have narrative importance/weight/relevance he doesn't have to do magical mythological IMPORTANT⢠things (even if I think he does have something cooked up as I said above), but like the entire point of his sl is the trauma recovery. he's there for that. that's literally his point in the plot and the fact that grrm created a villain for him means that he thinks it's an important thing to explore.
also I personally think that theon's arc is the best written thing in those books so like I don't want to undermine its importance, I just don't think that in order to be important⢠then theon has to be dragged kicking and screaming into main fiver territory because there isn't the need.
. Of course he has a lot of trauma and thatâs important, but I donât like how people reduce him to that and act like just because those things happened, he canât do anything else
I don't like that either esp. when coming from dnd who didn't even let him have it fully, but: and when did I ever do it? I never said that theon is only his trauma. my standing opinion wrt theon is that he's grrm's best written/constructed character (along with jaime) and his most innovative one (jaime following but theon wins it) because theon deconstructs the backstabber trope which I already went on about but:
again usually ppl who backstab the good protagonist⢠get caught and punished and you never hear their pov
theon has all the povs
he's the main char in that storyline not robb
he has entirely understandable reasons that ppl decided aren't sympathetic just bc they don't want to admit that in his position they'd have done the same thing
the audience hates him for having contributed to robb's downfall but then he gets a comeuppance that's completely not what anyone would deserve for that and he gets the spotlight/the sympathy again
he gets narrative redemption saving jeyne so you can see he's not an asshole at all
has to get through horrific abuse for his entire life not just with ramsay, he's not a good victim⢠but he's still written in a way that makes you want to root for him and at the end he actually comes through so you want him to keep on succeeding
which is smth that with the backstabber trope never happens
now the thing is that theon's there bc a) identity issues b) trauma recovery storylines that then get tied to bran's main one but like idg why just having the recovery storyline would make him lesser - saying he's not a main fiver doesn't mean he's not important, it means he's not a MAIN⢠character... which in asoiaf doesn't matter bc even ppl without povs are important to the narration and are there to drive a point (see sandor and stannis), and I don't see why saying that the most important part of his sl/the one grrm wants to stick with the readers is the survivor part of it rather than whichever heavy magic related plot thing he has to play in the future means undermining his importance. and while I think he has that role, idt it's the most important one he has bc being a survivor is what sells his storyline/the entire arc of his character.
then if come wow I'm wrong I'll be like okay I fucked up, but: honestly, imvho there is no way that azor ahai is not jon snow, the fact that collectively as a fandom we think it's obvious doesn't mean people in westeros do, each single point of evidence is at jon and if occam's razor is a thing then it's jon and that's okay because as deconstructed chosen one as he is, jon is still the protagonist of these books and regarding the prophecy above, it makes a lot more sense that this series is titled a song of jon snow and not a song of theon greyjoy and I say this as someone who vastly prefers theon as a character. also, if smth is well-written, readers should see it coming, so the fact that jon is AA isn't predictable if it's true, it's grrm.... knowing how to write a book and plant his hints because if everyone guessed right then if he makes it suddenly someone else bc jon is too predictable then it's dnd making it arya bc SURPRISE WE NEEDED YOU TO GO LIKE WTF HAS JUST HAPPENED INSTEAD OF FOLLOWING THE NARRATION TO ITS NATURAL CONCLUSION, not 'it's too predictable' or the audience red herring the way jaime being the valonqar is an audience red herring. jon being AA should be absolutely obvious for the reader who paid attention and a total surprise for the other characters in the narration, the audience red herring is more dany than anyone else imvho and I'm dying on that hill for now, thanks for coming to my ted talk but like I don't see how it's anyone but jon personally X°D
#jon snow#theon greyjoy#janie writes meta#idk anon i've never said theon wasn't important#i said he wasn't a main char#and like.... my fave char is robb#who doesn't even have a pov#is EXTREMELY important to the narration bc the rw is the crux of 50% of the plot#and i wouldn't call robb a main either#and in asoiaf there are five mainsâ˘#and everyone else is on a level of importance#but like those five mains are MAINS more than the others#and jon is the main-est of them so X°DDD#like the fact that the protagonist of a series is the one that has to save the world isn't smth that i think grrm wants to deconstruct#he wants to deconstruct HOW he gets there#but that's mvho#peace
