Odysseus's fixation upon his son could possibly be explained by the timeline.
A small thing that needs to be said is that according to Homer Odysseus left Telemachus a "newborn" (or at least so Menelaus says in the Odyssey). Interestingly is hard to tell how long Odysseus and Penelope have been married before they had Telemachus because the time line is not cut and clear.
It seems like their marriage took place during the oath of Tyndareus period when Odysseus was at Sparta as a suitor to Helen. From the Oath till Helen's infidelity or abduction or forced seduction by Aphrodite we see there were around 10 years of difference (quite frankly according to some accounts Helen mentions she was 20 years in Troy). That means that he and Penelope were potentially married at least a decade (which makes sense given that he made a wedding bed for her from scratch making it seem that their palace was also being rebuilt at that time)
But if Telemachus was newborn or almost newborn (like let's say about 1 year old tops) that means that Odysseus and Penelope were childless for almost a decade. Either that means they were having some issues aka Odysseus running errands in the kingdom or that they were trying very hard to have children and somehow they couldn't
Do you imagine what this means?
Odysseus potentially had to leave behind a son he wished for for almost a decade full and not to mention that Palamedes nearly killed him, that very son that he potentially tried so hard for and wished for so much!
Hell no wonder he names himself "Father of Telemachus" and quite frankly one can understand why he would hold a grudge against Palamedes (be it Higenius you follow where he frames him or be it Pausanias who says he drowned him) one can imagine why his brain would snap like that! If this hypothesis is correct that is.

I feel like the main thing about Epic that I love so much is how Jorge has explicitly stated that it's not accurate to the actual Odyssey, but stayed true to how Odysseus, Penelope, and Telemachus feel about one another.
Odysseus wants nothing more but to go home to his wife.
Penelope is patient, loyal, and cunning who believes Ody will return.
Telemachus wants to be like his father and keep his mother safe from the men who are taking over his home.
These are main things that often get changed in most retellings. The fact that there are many translations that show Odysseus's encounters with Circe and Calypso as non consensual or dubiously consensual show that there is a HUGE possibility that Homer actually wrote Odysseus to be an SA victim, and should not be dismissed--Ody should not be dismissed as just a cheater. Some retellings portray Penelope as someone who doesn't truly love Odysseus, as if she didn't wait for 20 years. While canon Telemachus may seem like a troubled man, he is trying his best to uphold the reputation of his father and keep his mom away from the suitors, even if he has to result to yelling at her to go back to her room sometimes. Not the best way to keep her safe, but his intention is pure, his intention is to make sure his mother doesn't get hounded by them.
Epic is inaccurate, and Jorge has said that.
Many was changed to make it more engaging and like a video game and anime.
But it does stay true to how the Ithacan family see and feel towards one another. And I love that.

Augusnippets Day 3: Thunderstorm
Fandom: EPIC/The Odyssey
Summary: When Telemachus was ten years old, thunderstorms became a common thing in Ithaca. He got used to them. As he walks around the palace, he learns that Odysseus had become terrified of them.
Thunderstorms were a normal thing for Ithaca. Telemachus started to notice more of them when he was 10 years old. He used to fear them. Now he sits by the window and watched with lightning and closes his eyes as he listens thunder and the rain.
It was a stormy night when the boy learned his father was scared of thunderstorms. Penelope has gone to visit Ctimene; someone Odysseus wasn't ready to see again after telling her about Eurylochus.
Listening to the storm, the prince walked around the halls of the palace like he's done since he was young. Stopping in front of his mother and father's room, he felt as if he should go inside.
Without knocking, Telemachus opened the door. Inside Odysseus sat in his bed. His sword was in his hands and his knees were to his chest.
"Dad? Are you okay?" Telemachus asked.
"They're coming." Odysseus said, his voice shaking.
Walking more inside the room, Telemachus approached his father. Odysseus jumped back, surprised by the movement. "who's coming?"
"The Gods." The king said, whispering. "They have come for me."
"It's just a thunderstorm." Telemachus approached his mother's bed and tried to sit down.
Odysseus swung his sword at his son.
"Dad, it's okay. Can you put the sword down?"
After a moment, Odysseus realized what he had done and pulled his sword away for his son. "I'm sorry." As he started to cry, Telemachus sat down with him.
"It's okay. Can I see that?" He gestured to the sword in his father's hands.
Nodding, Odysseus handed it to him. Then Telemachus put it down beside the bed. "The Gods won't get you here. I promise."
"You can't guarantee they won't." The king said softly.
"True, but it will be okay."
"Are you sure?"
"As sure as I can be. I'll be right here, okay? I'm not going anywhere."
Telemachus remembered what it felt like to be scared of thunder when he was little. Now his father was scared of it for a very different reason. Still, he knew that it was a hard thing to be afraid of. Only the gods can control thunderstorms after all.
"Okay." Pudding his knees back down onto the bed, Odysseus tied to relax.
"You know, I used to be afraid of thunderstorms too. I got pretty used to them. No one is going to hurt you here. You're home."
"I'm home." Odysseus repeated.
"Maybe try to sleep?"
"Yeah." Laying down, Odysseus closed his eyes. Telemachus went and sat by the rocking chair that was by a window.
"Thank you son. I love you"
"I love you too, Dad."

Reunion
"My son, I'm finally home!"
After twenty long years, a father and a son reunite in the arms of one another, though they appear closer to strangers than to family.
⁽ᵀʰᵉ ʳᵉᵘⁿᶦᵒⁿ ᵒᶠ ᴼᵈʸˢˢᵉᵘˢ ᵃⁿᵈ ᵀᵉˡᵉᵐᵉᶜʰᵃᵘˢ, ˡᵃʳᵍᵉˡʸ ᶦⁿˢᵖᶦʳᵉᵈ ᵇʸ ᵗʰᵉ ᴱᵖᶦᶜ ᵗʰᵉ ᴹᵘˢᶦᶜᵃˡ ˢᵒⁿᵍ; ᵗʰᵉ ᴿᵉᵘⁿᶦᵒⁿ! ᴾʳᵒᶜᵉᵉᵈ ʷᶦᵗʰᵒᵘᵗ ᶜᵃᵘᵗᶦᵒⁿ ᵗʰᶦˢ ᶦˢ ᵃᶜᵗᵘᵃˡˡʸ ʰᵃᵖᵖʸ!!!⁾
Telemechaus, far from battle.
Countless generations of parents had sought to bestow their sons with names of glory, wishing their name inscribed amongst the lays of heroes. Others still sought to weave a prophecy into a few syllabes and crown their sons with it instead, no matter how unforgiving the meaning.
Odysseus, son of pain. Though truth rang in every letter of his name, what father would wish upon their son an equal torment of fate? Was it not better to grace the child, symbol of innocence, with a name that promised good fortune?
What better fortune, than to remain throughout life afar from battle? That was what Odysseus had wished upon his son, and it shattered what remained of his soul to see it fall apart into lies.
Haggard, eyes of grey, grey, the colour of wearied stone that stood against the blatant assault of time, watched as his son tracked maroon ichor across the once pristine tiled floors, blood spilt from corpses unworthy of being named human, unworthy of bleeding where his son, innocent, gentle hearted, sweet son trod.
Was it still his son that stood before him? For now here walked a man, of posture lean yet lithe, of stride wary yet certain, of features beautiful; of a facial structure that appeared to be a mirror to Odysseus, and of eyes that belonged to his most beloved.
Nay, this was no man, nor was this a boy. This soul that now stood before him was none other save his son, though the passing time of two decades had carried him into manhood. What was the passage of several decades to the gods, or to a parent whose heart ached for the light of their life?
This was Telemechaus, who had never been afar from battle, for battle did not find its end upon the battlefield. This was Telemechaus, whose world had been dimmed by the absence of a dear father, whose heart had been weighed by the pressing of insistent, cruel suitors, whose eyes had been darkened by a careful suspicion and desperate will to protect.
This was Telemechaus, whose tears he gently wiped as he ought to have done all these years. This was Telemechaus, who he now gathered tightly into his arms and buried his face in the hair of, relishing in the faint scents of perfumed lavender and sharpness of sea salt that lay there, for it meant that his son was a seafarer, just as Odysseus was, and was not robbed of princely luxuries.
This was Telemechaus, and to Odysseus, there no longer was any agony in the world. There no longer was the pain that had claimed him as its son, for it all fell away now, shying away from the bright joy that now lay between his arms. What lament could form upon his lips when he could already feel the countless cracks in his heart heal?
No lament, only an exclamation that seemed to burst with relief and ectasy;
"My son, I'm finally home!"

NOSTALGIA || CHAPTER 18
TAGLIST: @koruga @min3tta @athamad @sworebytheriverstyx @wolfythewitch @dauntless-and-assiduous @maraudersforlife5922 @instarss @ahouli-lia @eggbreadboi @starlightqueen34 @quill-is-brainstorming @scoopac @ellisthen
NOTE: In the original Odysseus Telemachus doesn’t join the contest with the motivation of ‘if i win, my mum stays here’, it’s literally the opposite. It’s ‘if i win, that means i’m man enough to handle my mum leaving’. I changed it because a) I don’t like thinking of that and b) Telemachus didn’t even manage to string the bow? and yet the contest continued? Sure, he was close to stringing it but literally no one knows that other than the omniscient narrator of the Odyssey so that’s irrelevant. idk i just felt like changing it lol
