Iliad ww1 au
hear me out
Ok so there are two major sides added, the Trojans allied with the central powers and the Greeks were allied with the allied powers.
originally the Trojans were the only ones in the war
Helen, the princess of Sparta is the most beautiful rising queen of the time and heir to a powerful country. Because marriage is also political alliance, many royals want to marry her (she’s also gorgeous) so Odysseus comes up with a plan that if her choice is ever disputed upon, that every kingdom seeking her hand would defend her choice
Paris, a prince of the rising nation of Troy falls in love with Helen and takes her away to Troy, despite her marriage to Menelaus. Menelaus finds that since the Trojans are in the world war, the easiest way to get Helen back was to ally themselves with the allied powers.
Diomedes, the son of a once powerful king and conquerer joins to achieve fame like his father
Odysseus fakes Tuberculosis until his son is taken as not to have him catch it, forcing him to reveal himself
Achilles, a son of a well skilled militant king initially tries to evade the war, initially joins a jazz band and performs on radio until Odysseus hands every girl a gun to see who shoots best and Achilles automatically shoots incredibly
On the way there, Agamemnon is traveling with his daughter who he wishes to marry off to Achilles (despite the fact Achilles already is married) but the ship they are on is bombed, and the lifeboat cannot carry everyone, so Agamemnon makes the choice to leave behind Iphigenia and let her die
over the course of the war, the Red Cross sends some girls to the soldiers to help give them encouragement throughout the war and give them hot coffee and donuts (donut Dollies, these are cool btw look em up) and the men basically claim these women as their own. But one of them, Chryseis, turns out to have lied about her age to join and is too young and has to go home. Upset by this, Agamemnon instead claims Briseis, the one who always hung out with Achilles, as his. Enraged by this, Achilles quits fighting and stays in his tent with his best friend and probably lover, Patroclus. Achilles was known as a symbol of hope for the Allies because he was such an incredible fighter that they start to lose battles, so Patroclus dons Achilles’s gear dressed as him and fights, and performs successfully. However, on his way back, Hector, Paris’s brother sees Achilles’s gear in a truck on its way back to camp and shoots him and loots him for his gear. Achilles has to get handmedown gear but he doesn’t care. Even when he passes out from exhaustion with the doctor saying he would die if he went back out there, he still fights. He almost makes it too, but he passes out at the wheel on his way back and Paris finds him and kills him.
Odysseus seeing a weakness in Troy now that a member of the royal court is dead decides to attack Troy directly, they leave a blockade of stock-filled armored cars right outside of Troy and the Trojans take them. But there were men hiding on the underside of the trucks and in the night, the Greeks ambush Troy and decimate it and take Helen back.

So i finally got my hands on translations of both the Odysee and Iliad!!!
And despite originally caring more about the story of the Odysee i decided to read the iliad first and I'm so incredibly glad i did!
About 20 pages in and two different women are separately kidnapped and taken hostage, Agamemnon and Achilles are at each others throats, the gods are getting involved, Zeus is threatening to beat up his wife and Apollo is spreading the plaque.
Meanwhile Odysseus is somehow on a peaceful road trip and has a sleep over with the boys after a fun karaoke night.

a quick psa to anyone recently getting into greek mythology and is a victim of tumblr and/or tiktok misconceptions:
-there is no shame in being introduced to mytholgy from something like percy jackson, epic the musical or anything like that, but keep in mind that actual myths are going to be VERY different from modern retellings
-the myth of medusa you probably know (her being a victim of poseidon and being cursed by athena) isn't 100% accurate to GREEK mythology (look up ovid)
-there is no version of persephone's abduction in which persephone willingly stays with hades, that's a tumblr invention (look up homeric hymn to demeter)
-as much as i would like it, no, cerberus' name does not mean "spot" (probably a misunderstanding from this wikipedia article)
-zeus isn't the only god who does terrible things to women, your fav male god probably has done the same
-on that note, your fav greek hero has probably done some heinous shit as well
-gods are more complicated than simply being "god of [insert thing]", many titles overlap between gods and some may even change depending on where they were worshipped
-also, apollo and artemis being the gods of the sun and the moon isn't 100% accurate, their main aspects as deities originally were music and the hunt
-titans and gods aren't two wholly different concepts, titan is just the word used to decribe the generation of gods before the olympians
-hector isn't the villain some people make him out to be
-hephaestus WAS married to aphrodite. they divorced. yes, divorce was a thing in ancient greece. hephaestus' wife is aglaia
-ancient greek society didn't have the same concepts of sexuality that we have now, it's incorrect to describe virgin goddesses like artemis and athena as lesbians, BUT it's also not wholly accurate to describe them as aromantic/asexual, it's more complex than that
-you can never fully understand certain myths if you don't understand the societal context in which they were told
-myths have lots and lots of retellings, there isn't one singular "canon", but we can try to distinguish between older and newer versions and bewteen greek and roman versions
-most of what you know about sparta is probably incorrect
-reading/waching retellings is not a substitute to reading the original myths, read the iliad! read the odyssey! i know they may seem intimidating, but they're much more entertaining than you may think
greek mythology is so complex and interesting, don't go into it with preconcieved notions! try to be open to learn!

Odysseus @ Achilles
EDIT:
Ok, I’m seeing a lot of misunderstandings and people thinking this is my art. THIS IS NOT MY ART. I did mention this in the comments, but hindsight is 20/20. I wasn’t expecting this post to blow up so much, so I hadn’t put too much thought as to what it was going to put into the post. Anyways, here is the link to the art that this photo is from
