digital notes guide part 2/5: taking effective lecture notes (but make them cute!) 🎀

welcome back to our digital notes series! today i'm going more into the actual note-taking process during lectures/classes. this is important, since you can swap out notebooks for a digital notebook which becomes a lot more seamless.

♡ pre-lecture prep

because being prepared changes everything:

night before setup:

review previous notes (refresh your memory!)

pre-read lecture slides

create note template

set up quick-access tools

prepare questions

charge all devices

quick-access toolbar:

highlighting shortcuts

screenshot tool ready

recording software open

reference materials linked

custom stickers folder

favorite templates

♡ the actual note-taking method

this changed my whole study game:

(SUPER IMPORTANT) the butterfly method (my signature system):

main points in center

supporting details on left wing

examples on right wing

questions in antennae section

vocabulary in body section

connections in trail section

active engagement tricks:

use different colors for different types of information

create mini mind maps as you go

add little drawings for visual memory

insert voice memos for complex topics

flag confusing points with cute markers

leave space for post-lecture additions

♡ making it aesthetic but effective

because why not have both?:

visual organization:

use boxes for definitions

clouds for main concepts

stars for important points

hearts for memorable examples

arrows for connections

flowers for chapter markers

color coding system:

pink for main concepts

lavender for examples

mint for definitions

peach for formulas

baby blue for dates

gold for important warnings

because professors/teachers love to speed-talk:

shorthand system:

create cute abbreviations

use symbols for common words

develop personal code system

quick bullet points

voice record if allowed

flag for later review

quick capture methods:

quick sketch diagrams

voice memo key points

type keywords only

mark confusion points

flag for detailed review

because the real magic happens after:

immediate review:

fill in gaps while fresh

add pretty headings

organize messy sections

insert relevant images

complete examples

link related concepts

enhancement techniques:

create summary boxes

add practice questions

insert related resources

make concept connections

highlight key points

add memory triggers

effective notes aren't just about capturing everything - they're about creating a resource you'll actually want to review! think of it like creating your own aesthetic textbook that speaks your language.

pro tip: don't try to make everything perfect during the lecture. focus on capturing information first, make it pretty later! i usually spend 15 minutes after each lecture prettifying my notes.

Today was a really productive day in my opinion! I successfully completed all of my morning routine, and also got in a lot of studying done!

@studaxy and I started Duolingo as well!! I had started learning French way back in 2020 and I was able to read French way before choosing it as a language in school. I got back my language learning bug soooo wish me luck in that :3

Things I did today:

Thirty minutes of Duolingo

An hour of research for my English assignment. The topic of the assignment is "Performing Arts and the Freedom of Expression".

Two hours of physics — got some Module 3 reading done. Rotational motion is a vast concept but I'm pushing through somehow.

the sentence method

this is a method of note-taking that takes a straightforward approach that uses line spacing to separate thoughts, concepts, and ideas in your notes.

each time a new idea is introduced, you write it on a new line. this results in notes with large quantities of sentences arranged vertically. imagine each sentence as a building block, neatly stacked one above the other.

the sentence method is versatile and easy to use, making it suitable for fast-paced lectures where you don't have time for more structured note-taking. however, it's not the most efficient method overall.

when should you use this method?

when the lecture is rapid and you're unprepared, the sentence method can help you to capture information on the fly.

if the class lacks a clear structure, this method can still help you jot down key points

if you won't need to review the information extensively later, the sentence method suffices.

remember, while the sentence method is a viable strategy under certain circumstances, consider other methods if possible. after class, you can always rewrite your sentence notes into a more digestible format using techniques like the boxing method or the cornell method.

Started with arrays today, easy peasy. Jammed to Speak Now TV with @studaxy and ended up quoting every sad line to them because THEY LEFT ME ALONE (no they didn't I'm just being dramatic.

Uni was fun, I made some friends :3 and helped them get their code right during practical sessions.

Things I did today:

Read some theory of C programming from the text

Tried understanding multiplexers in the library. I found a book that looked like it would help me — it was too complicated. Need to find a new book tomorrow. (Uni 'B' really be having tough concepts with no explanation)

Started theory on single dimensional arrays

Fried my brain and now I'm tired. And sleepy.

LOVELIES!! if i was to sell pdfs of ib notes, would anyone be interested?? for example, the ss above is a little bit from my lower body muscle details, function and sporting examples doc (it has 4028 words and i've included pictures).

i would sell groups of ~10 documents for $10-15.

i also take physics hl (moving to biology next term but i have all of the topic a notes), business management hl, spanish ab, english sl, and mathematics aa sl.

So Long, Evernote

Evernote (EN) was great.

I'd used it since 2010 when I was in University. A good friend recommended it to me.

At some point, I started paying for the service. It was about $3 a month, I think.

After half a decade, I took a hiatus to try out Google Keep. I survived for a year, because I initially didn't have much note taking requirements. But plain-text is messy. And my ideas and notes became more complex and needed some structure to sort it out.

So I went back to Evernote.

But recently there was a tremendous price hike. $10+ a month for US, Canadian, and European (western bloc) users!

If users from the English/Western market are the majority users and are frightened by the pricing, it is not good for the business.

I had to leave Evernote.

What are good choices? I offer you the following:

OneNote - free, traditional note taking app

UpNote - affordable app most similar to Evernote

NotesNook - affordable, privacy-focused app. But unstable and doesn't support checklists

AmpleNote - task / journal app that is v.responsive but doesn't support checklists

Craft - beautiful journal app

I had some additional requirements (which may not be applicable to you):

Offline Mode

Version History

Checklists which are not Tasks

So I narrowed it down to OneNote - which is my anchor app is everything goes wrong, and Craft - which is my aspirational app if everything goes right.

I'm still evaluating Craft!
