vent: I'm mean again sorry. Im pretty sure this is a bit cruel and Im very harsh
being part of the RWBY, Transformers, and Mouthwashing fandom and begging people to be normal about characters who are incapable of speaking.
Like I'm kinder to the RWBY and Transformers fandom about this- I don't like when people erase Neo's muteness or infantalize Bee but a lot of the times I talk to fans who do this and they are mainly just ignorant and don't know any better -its annoying but I can have an actual conversation about this stuff- they tend to apologize for their ableism/aren't that defensive of it (atleast that's my experience for the most part- I hate the 'its cute' excuse from TF fans) but Jesus the mouthwashing fandom has been told multiple times not do this shit
As a disabled woman I am more uncomfortable with the treatment of Curly than Anything else like don't hit me with that TERF bullshit- y'all are so fucking defensive of your shitty behavior- y'all do realize that Curly's situation is supposed to parallel Anya's situation- it's not unfeminist to say that some of y'all are ableist shitheads
like both of their situations are the kind of shit you don't wish upon your worst enemy. The whole point is that Curly's situation is a mirror of Anya and saying he deserves it is kind of like saying he would've deserved to go through exactly what she went through that he deserves to be raped- you do realize his injury is supposed to mirror her fucking trauma?
But oh no that's not a feminist thing to say now is it? Stop excusing your ableism with feminism. I'm so done with this. As a disabled person I'm tired of being called a traitor when I point out ableist bullshit/lack of accessibility because clearly I'm just being a moral purist conservative when I tell people to not say/do awful shit or that things aren't accessible for a lot of people-im tired of experiencing this- in politics and fandom
I get that sometimes our disabilities inconvenience others or that we aren't good at stuff because or whatever because we arent strong or smart (literal symptoms of many disabilities you guys are assholes about it though) or whatever but I also don't care- fucking listen to us and stop acting like we're the problem when we ask you to NOT depict mute characters using fucking dog buttons or to not portray people with severe intellectual disabilities as symbols of the anti intellectual movement or to not automatically diagnose every abusive asshole with a personality disorder or to not say that being an amputee doesn't count as a disability (one of the worst takes on FMA and brotherhood I've ever seen) or to not put the literal burn victim on a monster fucker meme-
it's not hard to do a little critical thinking- burn victims exist in the real world some of them got their burns because they did something bad- idk like drink and drive and they do not deserve their injuries- some people have throat injuries from throat cancer from smoking- I'm not gonna be a cruel asshat and claim they got what they deserved. I'm sorry but if your automatic response to being called out on being ableist and yes that includes being ableist toward assholes is to try and make us into the villains your fighting against or infantalizing us/treating it all as a joke so you don't have to listen your a fucking asshole.
It's not that hard to understand alternative forms of communication exist (whether it be AAC- that thing many people with autism or brain injuries use or Morse code- also Johnny's got his gun? or sign- which admittedly curly can't use but like etc) . These forms of communication aren't embarrassing/unaesthetic/immature to use and are certainly better than dog buttons/just erasing the disability and if your automatic response to fans who get grossed out by this stuff is to say it's a joke
Remember that Jimmy made shitty jokes to and that those jokes where a red flag
Remember that Cinder treated Neo like shit by talking at her when she's upset and that Cinder is a bad person
Remember that beer is an adult and who gets taken seriously in universe
Remember that disabled people exist irl and that your treatment of them in fandom says a lot about how you'll treat us irl
I do take issue with Curly's actions (he should've given Anya better protection it's part of his job- while pony Express is a fault for the lock situation and punishing Jimmy at the time was a bad option he has ways to defend her) but dear god you people disgust me. The way you treat people who can be called vegetables and you treat disability as a punishment
Also if you write Anya abusing Curly as a joke I hate you- she's a fucking nurse- a damn good one despite not being able to become a proper one (somehow? Girl kept curly alive with no skin for months- like how wasn't she a valedictorian of a nursing school) - and she despite having a tense relationship with Curly is still a good nurse- as in not only did she keep him alive for months but she isn't abusive. Medical abuse is a fucking cruel ordeal and while Anya and the rest of the crew don't treat Curly the best I refuse to see this women be written as a shithead. I know part of the reason she refuses to give Curly his pills is because she's pregnant and it makes her I'll but I'm pretty sure the noises Curly makes also triggers her memories- in other words this woman is compassionate and empathetic but struggling with trauma- she isn't a shitty person (also if you get mad at her for having a fawn response/'being a doormat'/'not fighting back' or say she got in the way of curlyxjimmy i hate you)
Its not that hard to treat mute characters like adults and not like cute pets (I swear to God the cute mute trope is or atleast can be freaking infantalizing as shit)
Its not that hard to depict alternative forms of communication in a dignified manner (it's not childish or embarrassing to use blink based language or signs or whatever but it is dehumanizing to depict a grown man using dog buttons -AAC devices aren't gross or unaesthetic, there's a lot of different options and they are not lesser forms of communication- non speaking people aren't being over sensitive when they call you out on this shit)
People who cannot speak can often still communicate (some people can't and they also deserve to be treated well). Stop speaking over them or moving away from the topic while they trying to say something stop ignoring them- if it's hard for them to keep up in a conversation because communication takes longer then learn to fucking wait- but no people can't even handle a disabled person calling out ableism in fandom spaces without going 'but feminism!' or 'its just a joke! You clearly are coddled and too sensitive!' go fuck yourselves.
Mute nonverbal or speech impeded adults are adults who deserve to be treated like humans and have their opinions be voiced without being told it's not that serious when you constantly reveal your actual horrible opinions of disabled people- remember Jimmy and Cinder- if your joke is too distasteful then keep it to yourself and stop talking at people
The former nonverbal in me and the comm major in me makes me pissed- they're so many options and ways to communicate- whether it be nonverbal or not and it's pretty easy to understand and research this sort of stuff!
im sorry for being so pissed here

Making Redesigns is NOT Toxic
A while ago AyyLmao made a video about the LavenderTowne controversy and disscussed "problems" with Hazbin Hotel redesigns as a whole. I used to think he made good points about redesgins in the video.
I've changed my mind. Cuz AyyLmao's whole point about how people making redesgins for Viv's characters being bad is laughable at best. His whole argument is that it's toxic because "people are using redesigns to tear down Viv's shows and saying that their version is basically better".
First, it's funny to me how he never once applies this to when people make redesigns of characters made by other creators. Like I remember watching a video redesigning one of Butch Hartman's characters', and I've seen no one call that toxic, yet suddenely when it comes to Viv and her characters, it IS toxic. Gee, I wonder why...
Second, fixing bad character desgins is NOT toxic. Because there ARE objective rules and standards for what makes a good and bad character desgin, and people are allowed to critique those desgins if they break those rules, just like how there are objective rules for what makes good or bad writting in media, and people are also allowed to critque stories that don't follow these rules.
And just like how people are allowed to rewrite poorly written stories, people are also allowed to make redesigns to fix problems with bad character desgins.
It's not toxic.

i really wish simple things weren't so complicated within fandoms. a character can be problematic but interesting. a character can make a mistake but not be evil. a character can hold a position of authority and still be a victim. a character doesn't have to be perfect and pure and innocent to be a victim. a character doesn't have to be perfectly pure for you to like them. liking a character who's fucked up doesn't mean you support their every action. why is this so complicated

On Swansea’s (often understated) role in Mouthwashing
I say this as a big swansea fan but I don’t rlly understand why ppl are acting like he’s not also complicit in what happened to Anya? AUs where “Anya tells Swansea” and he jumps to violently defend her don’t make sense to me because canonically she does tell him, as he admits to Jimmy. But swansea represents another way of interacting with the capitalist heteropatriarchy that ALSO harms victims: holistic jadedness and resignation.
Swansea is across the board unkind to the Tulpar crew. We can’t forget that he calls anya a “so-called nurse”
Tumblr media
and says this to Jimmy, which (if unintentionally) reiterates Jimmy’s own warped perception of Anya’s usefulness and competence. This allows Jimmy to feel justified in his imagination of the nurse’s inferiority. Swansea’s clear lack of respect for Jimmy does less to hurt Jimmy than his lack of respect for Anya harms Anya, because at the end of the day, Swansea’s attitude is contextualized by the violent culture it exists in and he does nothing to reconcile with that when Jimmy becomes the captain. His resignation can thus be weaponized even by Jimmy, a man who Swansea disrespects but whose power he doesn’t try to meaningfully jeopardize, because his across-the-board disdain punches people already marginalized by the environment twice as hard as it does those with power.
Swansea doesn’t position himself as an ally, he positions himself as willfully uninvolved in everything, an observer to the shitshow ride to hell. Just because he dislikes Jimmy doesn’t mean he aligns with Anya. He makes it clear that he’s not on her side, either. After a life of doing what he felt was expected of him, Swansea on the Tulpar looks out for Swansea and Swansea’s comfort. In trying to situate himself outside of the politics of it all as an older white man, he simply allows them to play out. The toxic culture keeps existing, playing out in the microcosm that is this freighter, and Swansea in all his experience recognizes that shit has hit the fan and elects to coast through it, even explicitly numbing himself to it by breaking his sobriety. It is, of course, hard to force yourself to be sober—to see clearly. But had Swansea forced himself to get involved sooner, he might have set a precedent for Daisuke to recognize Jimmy’s abuse, which could have saved Daisuke’s life as well as created a safe space for Anya. But Swansea’s inaction forces both victims to confront an abuser on their own, unable to reap benefits from his privilege and experience.
Jimmy is clearly intimidated by swansea in a way he is not by Anya, Daisuke, or a post-crash Curly (Swansea, for example, physically manifests as an aggressor in Jimmy’s “responsibility sequences”, and Jimmy ties Swansea up to avoid what he sees as the real possibility of pushback that he doesn’t conceive of Anya being able to do). Swansea has a power he does not act on or with until it is far, far too late. In fact, he acknowledges in his final monologue that he was dissatisfied with the discomfort with opening his eyes and living an exemplary “good man”s life. The best days of his life are ones in which he’s belligerently drunk—days in which he didn’t have to hold himself accountable. He regrets the life he spent performing for higher-ups and we watch him reject it by scorning Captain Jimmy, but he also doesn’t want to be held responsible for helping other people when it’s their turn to endure the expectations and violence from similar (if not the same) higher powers. Tragically, he possesses the hindsight to recognize that how he acted on the Tulpar consequently wasn’t what Daisuke needed out of a role model, leading to Daisuke becoming a victim. His hands-off approach to emotional engagement with his young male intern (another symptom of patriarchal gender norms) may have been to avoid Daisuke turning out miserable and jaded like himself, but it doesn’t actually indicate to an already-confused Daisuke what the dangers of that attitude are. Swansea never admits his own shortcomings in a tangible way which, had they come from a man with experience and prestige like himself, may have shifted that culture that failed Anya. She comes to him with the story not because he has situated himself as any earnest friend, but likely out of desperation on a ship Jimmy now controls.
When we allow “the machine” (Swansea’s own words) to beat us down to the point that we don’t find it productive to challenge unjust power dynamics, we become complicit. I think too many people get hung up on his disdain for Jimmy and Jimmy’s fear of Swansea as a marker of allyship with Anya, but the truth is that Swansea. Is a bad ally. He’s hardly one at all. His long stint in the demanding capitalist environment molded a perfectly complicit result out of him, as it aspires to do, even if Swansea bitterly recognizes that. Jimmy’s overt violence from a position of power is a different and much more brutal approach to abuse enabled by people who have been left too tired and bitter to care that he does it. A man who could’ve intimidated and even threatened Jimmy is too resigned to try until there is literally nobody but himself left to fight for, which is an attitude carefully cultivated among the lower rungs of hierarchies to keep the top safe. Swansea in particular seems very unhappy with the capitalistic, patriarchal expectations laid out for him as a father, husband, and laborer. This becomes particularly resonant when you realize the symbolism of his role as mechanic: a job that can be deeply unpersonal, tasked with keeping the ship (the machine, if you will) itself going while other roles are more focused on managing the humans inside of it (e.g. nurse, captain). His decision to just stop trying and spare himself the grief instead of questioning why those expectations exist and how they would hurt the others onboard only delays him being directly targeted by Jimmy and doesn’t interrupt the latter’s violence.
Not a single man in mouthwashing is innocent in Anya’s victimhood. This is a statement tentatively uninclusive of Daisuke, because I think the game very deliberately positions him outside of manhood through his youth and thus struggling with the concept of “fitting in” to the patriarchy. Curly, Jimmy, and Swansea all represent different failures that ultimately perpetuate Anya’s suffering and force her to defend herself and finally take her life into her own hands. A holistic analysis of rape culture in MW necessarily engages with all three of them. Only not being a friend and ally to rapists and other male abusers isn’t enough, and Swansea proves it.

Meaning behind these arts :) MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!
The blue hands represent Jimmy's hands and they are installed on places where the crew got hurt or places that killed them.
Daisuke got one of his eyes lacerated because of the axe, Curly got his ears torned off in the crash and Anya had blood under her mouth when she overdosed.
Plus the "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" represent how they couldn't see/talk about the assault on Anya.
She couldn't speak about it (hands on mouth), and when she did, Curly listened but didn't do anything, so in a way he refused to acknowledge/listen to it (hands on ears) and Daisuke couldn't see anything about it, he even didn't know (so hands on eyes).
