Shadow core Danny? Shadow core Danny with Hazmat AU? Indeed, with a hint of a twist. 

See that hazmat helmet beneath the hood? Yeah that’s erm, that might be his actual face now. It might be able to split open into a proper maw, as he found out during one of the early fights. He thinks it might be a shadow-core thing though, because Fright Knight has something similar, along with the Keeper. Who's apparently a ghost that keeps track of other shadow-ghosts, which, cool. Cool library covered in flesh, nothing spooky there. 

He mentions this? Because apparently even if all ghosts partially feed on emotions, shadow cores need Fear the most. Which, thankfully shadow cores are apparently more rare than he’d expect, so he’s not going to go into a territorial frenzy or something on a bad day, yay! 

But uh, he might… count as a ghostling since he’s only a year dead- in fact he’ll continue to be as such until he’s at least 100 years dead, since he didn’t die as an adult. Which in turn… means he needs even more fear, at least until he’s old enough to generate it on his own. 

So what’s a ghostling to do? Take a trip to one of the most fear-soaked cities in the world, y’know, just a little weekend trip every month. Gotham isn’t that bad, and he can stay invisible- mostly! What’s going to happen, he run into a vigilante? Ha… oh no.

But also- when they’re casually sitting in the wings, on opposite sides, watching the main stage, they’ll lean together in sync

They’ll cross their legs at the same time

Sam and Luke push back their hair together

AJ and Luke lean in the same direction when they laugh

Tom and Sam dip their heads to hide a laugh or disappointed at the same time

They follow hand movements, step backwards together, blend and flow around each other with such perfect synchronization you think its scripted

OUTER WILDS SPOILER FOR BASE GAME AND ECHOES OF THE EYE ENDING

One thing that made me go "Why?" during the finale with eote finished was the section with the prisoner. We have to blow out the candles representing each species, but the one with the Hearthians have three framed pictures instead of one. The people depicted are Hal, Tephra, and Gneiss specifically.

And I wondered: "Why them?" Maybe the reason is that they are all special to the Hatchling themself. There's certainly dialogue to imply that for Tephra and Hal. Maybe it could also have been to show Hearthians at each stage of their life: child, adulthood, and senior. After all, Hearthians are the only species we see at multiples stages of their life. It makes sense we have a more complete picture of them.

But one thing that stood out was that Hal worked with the Hatchling to create the Nomai translator tool, which is what brings Hatchling this far. Gneiss made the instruments for the travelers, which are instrumental (hah) in the finale.

So both of their contributions are important. What about Tephra then? Well, they familiarize you with the signalscope, teaching you to seek out signals. Gneiss does that too, though. So what else?

I propose this: When the Hatchling agrees to play with Tephra and Galena, they close their eyes (isn't watching) so Tephra and Galena disappear to another location. You must track them down with the signalscope to their hiding spot. Sounds very, very familiar with something else, does it not?

I do recognize that this probably making a great reach. After all, if we want to talk about people who made great contributions to Hatchling's journey, members of Outer Wilds Ventures are stronger candidates compared to Tephra.

Regardless, I just wanted to share my thoughts on the section of the finale that fills me with great bitter-sweetness.

I went with personality matches, so sadly that does not make Santi Bonnie, he's totally Monty. Lee is Bonnie, he gets forgotten all the time. Matorgy is a robot. The only one I'm on the fence about is Ash, because they give me more Cassie vibes but then that left Steph as Chica and that's ...weird.

Then again, Steph was the first, she has seen everything. Hm...

I just love these fics where Bruce straight up losses control and his kids just start serial adopting each others. There is something so funny about someone who is not ready to be parenting, traumatized, going through life, thinking they have it handled. until they see a kid mimics their behaviors (/coping mechanisms) and have the horrible realization thats how their behavior looks like from the outside and they DO NOT, in fact, have it handled.

I have a minor grievance with Stampede to air out, brought on by listening to Adventures in Solitude by The New Pornographers which is of course the ultimate volume 14 of trimax song. In the last ep of Stampede, Vash and Knives both sprout one wing and fly completely normally. (It takes Vash a minute to get his balance but then he can fly fine.) And this seems to posit that like, they inherently only have one wing each, and that that’s normal and not a hindrance. Obviously the visual -wiggles hand- whatever is that if you put them side by side they make one whole entity with two wings.

However this is in reference to the final volume of the manga, in which they fly off into the sunset holding each other, each with one wing out for balance. But. But. Here’s my beef. Vash is the one who grabs Knives and takes off with him to save him from the Earth fleet/Chronica’s rage. Vash manifests a full ass set of angel wings. Except, in doing so, he’s burning through way too much of his power, and also he just got impaled in the gut by one of Knives blades, so he falters and starts to pass out. One of his wings falls apart. Knives then manifests a single wing to balance Vash’s remaining wing, and he does it with a look of terror and desperation- obviously he’s never done that before, and it’s easy to read into the moment that Knives is not used to trying to manifest something -useful- or -creative- with his blades. He just makes weapons. So his wing is strange, a weapon repurposed to a practical task, unwieldy. The thing is, Knives -can also generate feathers- like Vash but for all his bluster about how Vash never learned how to use his powers and Knives is so all-powerful with them, in the end, he has actually poured so much of his focus into becoming death incarnate - becoming Millions Knives - that he can’t even manifest the one thing it makes sense for feathers (his basic nature) to be: a wing.

And then the two of them fly away struggling with it, barely holding their forms and barely balancing each other, but finally crossing a bridge to work together to achieve something. Anything. Even if all they achieve is to escape (and do exactly what Vash always said: run away and wait for things to calm down, and then try to come back in peace).

So yeah my beef with Stampede is borrowing the visual of the one-winged angels and losing the meaning. I mean, I think Stampede creates some new and interesting meanings of its own - it’s leaning far more into the idea that the twins aren’t really whole on their own, that they need each other to be complete in a more ontological sense. But. As a filthy manga stan. I will always adore what Nightow did with these boys and their troubles, and how few words were needed to explore their feelings. So much of manga Knives is in his facial expressions. His anguish of loss and grief in the last volume is so damn palpable. Stampede’s only brushed over the surface possibilities of Knives as a character.
