I'm seeing very few people talk about this, but Project 2025 threatens to get rid of the Department of Education. This would allow increased parental control into what's being taught in the classroom, and will only increase book bans. Please, if you know a child in your life, get a book into their hands. Give them banned books. Give them books about any topic being taken out of schools. Take them to the library. Pirate ebooks for them. Donate your own books. Don't let their education be taken away.

August 3, 2024 - Activists blocked the boat of Booking.com at Amsterdam canal pride, to stop their corporate pinkwashing of the Israeli occupation and genocide.
Booking.com promotes and rents out holiday properties in illegal Israeli settlements. As in, not just in occupied Palestine, which is all of Israel, but in Israeli settlements that are considered illegal even by the UN. [video]

In the short time we have before trump is put back into office, I would suggest buying, compiling, and reading as much theory literature as you could.
Buying physical copies is always the best option, as they can’t take those away from you. If you need a digital version, it’s best you try and find a free copy or pdf you can download instead of buying it on a kindle or other online book market.
Collect and Share whatever interests you. Queer Theory, Race Theory, Political History, Anti-Facist fiction, anything that catches your eye.
The best way to prepare for a fight against facism is to be knowledgeable.

Uncovering the Cover-up: How Republican Pennridge School Board Directors Secretly Banned Books
Darren Laustsen | May 28, 2024
Pennridge School District engaged in a massive two-year cover-up of a secret book-banning campaign initiated by two sitting Republican school board directors hellbent on unilaterally purging books without any due process, community input, oversight, or accountability.  According to a sworn Attestation from new Superintendent Angelo Berrios, Ricki Chaikin and Jordan Blomgren ordered school staff to remove books from the library that they had unilaterally deemed were inappropriate. More so, during legal battles over a Right-to-Know request, Pennridge’s law firm, Eckert Seamans, fought to circumvent the state’s Open Records laws and conceal book removals from the public. The scheme involved illegally-doctored public records, the concealment of book removals under fake student accounts, and the eventual disposal of targeted books under the false pretense of librarian “weeding.” …

Black Vampires!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Below the cut you’ll find a list of 10 pieces of vampire media centring black folks by black folks, happy black history month!
1. Fledgling by Octavia Butler (see more)
2.The Gilda Stories by Jewelle Gomèz
3.House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson
4.Darknesses by Lachelle Seville
5.My Soul to Keep by Tananarive Due
6.Slay: the stories of the vampire noire by multiple authors
7.Horror Noire (documentary on AMC+)
8.Vampires in Brooklyn (movie)
9.The Dark World Series by @writingvampires
10.The Black Vampyre (1819) by Uriah Derick D'Arcy, problematic themes and handling of blackness, however our black protagonist vampire, a black bisexual (implied) vampire protagonist is very AMC-Louis-like and it’s important for understanding the others as groundbreaking and reclaiming their stories as they are.
Happy Black History month! I rarely make booklists like this, however, it recently came to my attention that some people aren’t aware of the brilliant subgenre that is gothic/horror written by people of global majority (colour), given it is black history month this list focuses on black people vampire stories written by black people, most of which are also queer (cause vampires are queer af). Allyship is the bare minimum, if we as a society are to grow at all from our forefathers we must understand that our ancestors were flawed, unlearn internalized biases (racism etc), and make intersectional spaces for everyone. I’ve kept it to 10 for my own ability to count everything, I can say with most certainty there’s more out there. These are just the ones I’ve read/watched and have influenced me the most.

Christopher Wiggins at The Advocate:
Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, was in Texas for the second time this month on Thursday, where she delivered a speech at the American Federation of Teachers national convention in Houston. The AFT is the second-largest labor union for teachers in the country. In the speech, she reiterated her unwavering support for LGBTQ+ rights, condemned Republican book bans, and called for an assault weapons ban. Harris spoke passionately about the recent surge in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in red states, particularly the “don’t say gay” laws that have proliferated across the country. She recounted her early advocacy for marriage equality, sharing, “In 2004, on Valentine’s Day weekend, I was one of the first elected officials in the country to perform same-sex marriages.” Harris has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to LGBTQ+ rights.
“It pains me so to think that, 20 years later, there are young teachers in their twenties who are afraid to put up a photograph of themselves and their partner for fear they could lose their job,” Harris said. She promised to fight to protect teachers and students from discrimination, affirming, “Every American should be free from bigotry and hate.” Harris also condemned the wave of Republican-led book bans that have targeted educational materials dealing with LGBTQ+ issues and racial history. She called out the hypocrisy of those who seek to restrict academic freedom while claiming to champion free speech. [...] “While you teach students about our nation’s past, these extremists attack the freedom to learn and acknowledge our nation’s true and full history,” she said. “We want to ban assault weapons, and they want to ban books. Can you imagine?”
Vice President and presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris spoke at the American Federation of Teachers conference Thursday in which she spoke against censorious book bans, unwaveringly defended LGBTQ+ rights, and called for a renewal of an assault weapons ban.

Minnesota joined pioneering Illinois in making it illegal to ban LGBTQ+ and other books at libraries. The bill, known as MN SF3567, was signed into law by Democratic Gov. Tim Walz on the 17th.
Minnesota has banned book bans, making it illegal for libraries to remove titles based on ideology. Democratic Gov. Tim Walz signed HF3782 into law last week, which prevents libraries from removing books “based solely on the viewpoint, content, message, idea, or opinion conveyed.” Instead, content curation will be managed by “a licensed library media specialist, an individual with a master’s degree in library sciences or library and information sciences, or a professional librarian or person with extensive library collection management experience." "Censorship has no place in our libraries. As a former teacher, I’m clear: We need to remember our history, not erase it," Walz said on Twitter/X. "Today, I signed a bill into law putting an end to book bans based on ideology in Minnesota."
In the Minnesota Senate, all 34 Democrats voted for the bill along with 1 Republican (Sen. Jim J. Abeler). All 31 Nay votes came from Republicans.
Tumblr media
In the Minnesota House, all 68 Democrats voted for it and all 59 Republicans voted against it.
Tumblr media
So don't take shit from third party losers who tell you that both major parties are alike.
This vote is another reminder of the importance of state government and state legislatures in particular.
The passage of Minnesota's anti-censorship bill was made possible when Democrats flipped the state senate in 2022. 😉
Look up who represents you in your state's legislature.
Find Your Legislators Look your legislators up by address or use your current location.
If you're represented by Republicans, work to defeat them. Volunteering to help in a legislative election is an excellent way to get your feet wet in politics. It's very grass roots and you'll probably get a chance to talk with the candidate yourself.
BONUS: Minnesota's new state flag became official this month. It's VERY blue and even if Justice Alito flies it upside down it won't make any difference.
