I feel like people who write off Kirk as a "womanizer" don't really draw the lines in the right places.
To me the division is not "man who has a lot of sex | man who doesn't." It's "man who treats women as objects to collect and enjoy | man who genuinely sees women as people and loves them."
It's the post scarcity future, I'm sure there's a vaccine for every STI and we know their birth control works great. There's no reason not to have sex if you want to have it. There shouldn't be shame involved in having lots of it.
But if you watch Kirk carefully, he does not ever treat women like collectibles or disposables. He interacts with them very much as people. Some he flirts with and it's not serious (which they know). Some he's trying to help. Some manipulate him, which sucks. And some he presumably has sex with, but only because he genuinely likes them as people and wants to do this fun thing with them.
None of this fits the idea of a womanizer as a man who takes advantage, pretends to be in love only long enough to score, cheats, gropes his employees, can't see women as people because he's only looking to get as many of them into bed as possible.
So I wish people would stop painting him as that. He's a flirt, he falls for people easily, he's noticeably horny, but he's never disrespectful of women. The writers were very careful about that. They saw the world around them full of that kind of caddish behavior and wrote a man who would never. They show Kirk being tempted by Rand, Marlena, etc., and then making the deliberate choice not to act that way. Because they were making a point about how a hero acts. We even see him give Charlie a lecture about how to treat women, and it's a lesson he personally follows. It's a bit heavy handed if anything.
And then people watch like half of one episode and go "oh yeah ha ha that Kirk, such a sixties womanizer hero, so backward, I'd never watch that." I thought that initially before my recent rewatch, but....that is simply not what's in the show.

Jim likes to pick up Spock after work at the Embassy. Sometimes, they drop by the store on their way home and get some wine for the evening. Jim is always so excited to finally see Spock after a long day of work, that he blabs the whole way home, while Spock silently listens, responding with occasional "hms" and "indeeds". Spock will never admit it but walking home from work with Jim is his favourite part of the day.

I'm rewatching Trollhunters in the background right now, and the disfunctional mother son relationship between Jim and his mom is making me crazy.
Like, he's taking care of the household and his mother for years as a teenager and before probably. She is sometimes giving half hearted comments about him not having to do so much, but very obviously she's not gonna make him stop do all the cooking and cleaning. Y'know. Both because they've been living like this for years, and because it's obviously also very comfortable to have someone do all the house work.
Then Strickler comes into the picture, and if we ignore the whole Troll and changeling side of the story, Barabara gets very offended cause Jim doesn't want her to meet him privately. Again, ignoring the whole magic and trolls stuff, STRICKLER IS JIMS TEACHER. If Jim hadn't figured out that Strickler was a changeling he probably wouldn't have a problem with it, but the fact that he does, no matter the reason, should be enough for Barbara to put a stop to the relationship. Her child is clearly uncomfortable with her seeing/dating that guy, for whatever reason, and even clearly vocalized it. But she doesn't care about, or rather, she tells Jim that she "wouldn't expect something like that" from him. Obviously not, cause she may see him like her child/teenager he is, BUT DOESN'T TREAT HIM LIKE ONE.
And then Jim, unknowingly to Barbara, becomes the Trollhunter, and his behavior changes. He's suddenly doing reckless stuff, sneaking out, getting bruises, landing in detention and even at the police station, barely avoiding a police report. What does she do? Asking him what's going on? If everything's alright at school? If he has any other problems? Maybe trying to lower his workload around the house, which again, he's doing most of that as a teenager and longer probably.
Nah. She doesn't do anything until he lands in the hospital. Except for again, dismissing him rather negatively at the one topic he's openly expressing any negative opinions about (Strickler). And after he lands in the hospital she now starts not asking questions, but demanding answers. Demanding answers from a teenager in a difficult situation who is also now acting much more like a teenager than he ever did before, from her point of view at least. Except she obviously doesn't know how to deal with a teenager, cause she has never had to raise or live with a teenager. She instead lived with a child pretending to be an adult for years, that was partly much more of an adult than she was, who did way to much work even before Jim became the Trollhunter. So she throws punishments at him and grounds him, but does he listen?
No. Cause why should he? Not only is he dealing with things much more important than being grounded, yknow, saving the world, he's trying to protect her from the sheer knowledge of the supernatural and physically protecting her from getting harmed. And again, for the majority of the time since his dad left he pretended to be an adult. He was and is the main adult in the household, dealing with important things she doesn't even know about.
The only one's treating Jim like a teenager are teachers, other children and Blinky and Aaargh sort of when they're not in the middle of Troll business. Strickler, in the first episodes where Jim doesn't know about his true identity, is much more of a parental figure to Jim (also after his redemption later on tbh) than his mother.
In summary: Barbara is treating her son like an adult, almost like a partner, instead of a child/teenager. And when that isn't possible anymore she doesn't know how to properly treat him. She also doesn't really care that her son is uncomfortable with her being around Strickler, or Strickler in general. And it takes Blinky telling her (when Jim is 16) that Jim might be affected by his father leaving when he was five years old.
Jim meanwhile is treating his mother more like a child/teenager instead of the adult and MOTHER that she is. Seeing her as his responsibility. Cooking for her. Cleaning for her. Telling her to rest and take breaks.
They obviously love each other other. And their relationship might not be toxic, but it's very much disfunctional. In a way that is mostly negative for Jim.

Every time I see some idiot proclaim "Jim Henson wouldn't have wanted this" under queer-positive, anti-racist or otherwise anti-bigotry posts by Sesame Street, Muppets or related fan accounts, I gotta laugh.
Like, do y'all know who Jim Henson even WAS?! He was, by the gods, no perfect person, but do y'all honestly think he'd be on your side as you spew hatred against minorities? The man that had a TV series created with the literal goal to teach equality and social systems and that'd help stop wars?!
Actually, let me bring up other Muppeteers while I am at it, who'd likewise not support y'alls crap: Dave Goelz, famously basing his characters on himself at least in part, playing the very gender-expression-flexible Gonzo and supporting the queercoding of Boober in "The Glow". Bill Baretta, performing Pepe the King Prawn who canonically has described sexuality as fluid. Richard Hunt, who performed Scooter, Mudwell the Mudbunny and many more, a gay puppeteer. Frank Oz, performer of Fozzy Bear, Animal, Bert, Miss Piggy and more, 1st Gen. Immigrant from a Jewish-Catholic mixed family. Kevin Clash, a Black man who made his own career as a puppeteer since he was a teenager. I could go on and on. Aymee Garcia. Peter Linz. Frank Meschkuleit. John Tartaglia.
Your bigotry has no place on Sesame Street, nor with any Muppet media. It never has. From the start, Jim Henson, his fellow creatives, and the people who carry on his work have promoted kindness, education, creativity and equality.
If you think any of them would agree with your bigotry, you have not been paying attention.

Hopper first properly meets Steve Harrington when he was only 12 years old. Hopper was patrolling in the afternoon, like he does every afternoon, every morning and every night because you know, he didn’t have anything else to do after moving back to Hawkins after his daughter died. He drowned himself with work, cigarettes and alcohol.
When first sees Steve, he doesn’t even know he was the Harrington’s sole heir. He’s just a kid, a kid too small for his age, and Hopper has to reassure himself that maybe this kid just doesn’t eat enough, it doesn’t mean he’s sick. The kid was carrying planks of woods, too long and too heavy for his frame, hauling it on the side of the street.
Hopper takes pity at the kid and slows down beside him, opening his passenger window.
“Hey, kid. Need help?” The kid looks at him apprehensively. Like no ones ever offered to help him, like he’s actually been alone his whole life.
“I don’t need help.” The kid scoffs back, panting a bit as he carries the wood with struggle.
“Okay? You sure about that?” He hums, nodding, not even sparing him a glance.
“You should bring a wagon with you.” The kid stops on his tracks, realizing that he could have bought a wagon to ease his struggle.
“Thank you, Sir.” He courtly answers before marching to his destination.
Hopper has always been curious, has always wanted to know everything. So he waits for the boy to walk further before following him, the kid walks to the forest and there, Hopper watches as the kid struggles to make… a tree house. Alone. He wonders where are this kid’s parents? Why is no one watching him? The kid goes to the hardware store to buy tools, carries them, builds a tree house half of the day and no one looks for him?
Hopper investigates, goes back to work before going back to the forest, staying hidden and following as the kid goes home. He’s surprised when they enter the rich end of the town, the kid walking all the way down to Loch Nora and… to the massive, always empty, Harrington house.
Oh.
So this was the Harrington kid, alone in the house at the age of 12. Hopper won’t lie, he felt pity for the kid but the burning rage comes first. Because he just buried his kid, the one he wanted for the rest of his life and here’s a kid, who lives alone in a big house with parents that didn’t even care about where their son is.
It becomes a routine, Hopper wakes up, eats some shit breakfast, goes to work, goes for patrols, he uses his lunch break to check on Steve in the forest as he slowly builds his treehouse, he patrols around, checks on Steve again, goes home to eat shit dinner, goes back to the forest, checks what Steve has done, makes sure everything is safe and tight for him, he hammers down nails, because no child should be using that, checks on planks, then he goes home and sleeps. Repeat.
Until halfway through the summer, it stops. The treehouse is almost finished, outside it’s a whole treehouse. But inside, Steve’s still putting finishing touches. At the door, SH is carved out, and inside there’s boxes of food, even clothing and a bed. It’s not a kid’s tree house with toys and chalkboards, Hopper realizes, it’s a safe house away from home.
He only finds out why it stopped when he learns from the newspaper that Steve became one of the best swimmers Hawkins have ever seen and might be growing to be the next basketball captain for Hawkins High.
Steve grows up, throws parties and gives Hopper this look whenever he tries to break up the loud parties. Hopper’s always tries to decipher it, but Steve has always been better at masking what he feels. He tries to keep an eye on the kid, but between him, the Hagan kid throwing too many parties and the Munson kid who he thinks is selling drugs, he doesn’t have enough eyes to focus on just one thing.
Because life is weird, he gets a super-powered kid. The kid he tried to lure out with Eggos. He asks her one night, where she stayed in the middle of winter to keep warm. Eleven answers him, with big brown eyes, hair curling in the ends, “A house, up the tree.” Hopper has to clench his eyes to stop from tearing up, the treehouse Steve built at the age of 12, the place he wanted for refuge, the place Hopper helped built secretly, gave his daughter a safe place to stay.
Steve becomes part of his world, gets his shit rocked, and Hopper wishes he can keep all these kids away from this evil underworld, keep them all in a treehouse where they can just relive their childhoods, free of monsters and blood and death.
Hopper dies.
Hopper comes back.
Hopper does everything he wants to do. He hugs El a little tighter, proposes to Joyce, treats Will and Jonathan like his own sons, they’re little shits but he agrees to as many sleepovers the kids want and he finally, finally keeps an eye on Steve, becomes some semblance of a parent to the kid and tells him that he’s never alone. They never have to fight monsters ever again and maybe they’ll never get over it, maybe they’ll always jump at the slightest blink of a light, will always have to sleep with a weapon, but for now just knowing is good enough.
Now, he’s in Steve’s back porch, swinging on a rocking chair, watching as Steve carries planks of wood with ease. If he squints really hard, he can see 12 year old Steve and it makes his heart clench in nostalgia. There’s a 6 year old screaming, running around, clapping as Steve smiles down at him. Hopper can hear them faintly, as Steve explains what they’re about to do, the steps they’re taking to build a brand new tree house just behind his own home.
“Pa! Pa! Look at my helmet!” The kid comes running when the yard door opens, flailing to his other father as he brandishes the helmet Steve makes him wear when he’s near constructions.
“Well, aren’t you looking metal? Safety’s always important, bug, so good job.” Eddie Munson bends down to kiss the kid on the head before walking to Steve, pulling a wagon full of planks.
Hopper watches as the three try to visualize the tree house, laughing, smiling, just happy. Steve turns to them, waving, turning to whisper something to Eddie before he nods, giving Steve’s temple a kiss and helping his kid hammer the first few planks.
Steve walks up to them, holding out his hand as Hopper passes the second Harrington-Munson kid to his arm.
“Hi, love. Did Peepaw treat you well?” Hopper scoffs, because he still had an image to maintain and yeah, he melts every time the kids of the kids he watched grew up calls him Peepaw but no one has to know that.
The baby in his arm coos, almost like saying a yes. Steve smiles down at her, “We’re building a treehouse right at our backyard, darling. Me, your Pa and your brother. So when you grow up you’ll have a safe space just for the two of you. Just like how Peepaw helped me finished my treehouse when I was younger.”
Hopper blanches, “You know about that?”
Steve laughs quietly, “Yeah. I go home everyday with unfinished work and when I come back the next morning it’s always finish. Also, you don’t hide very well.”
Hopper scrubs his nape in embarrassment, “Oh.”
“Thank you.” Steve whispers, “It was a safe place for me when I was younger. And now I want to build one for the kids too.”
“Your kids will never need a treehouse for anything but playing because yours and Eddie’s home is already a safe place.” Steve makes a choked out sound, as he nods.
Hopper helps build the treehouse with Steve and Eddie. They finish the treehouse in two weeks.
And no one says a thing when Hopper tears up when he sees the wooden door up in the tree house, with SH, EM and the kids initials engraved.
JH is carved at the bottom, written by a 39 year old Steve Harrington, still with the same handwriting as 12 year old Steve Harrington.

Do you think that if someone in the cast was different, the dynamic would totally change? I don't think Troy and Abed would exist without Danny and Donald. If they changed someone in the movie due to scheduling conflicts, everything would feel different
OBVIOUSLY!!! Troy and Abed wouldn't be Troy and Abed without Danny and Donald! Jeff wouldn't be Jeff without Joel! Almost all the characters in Community were adapted to their actors. Britta's change was mostly because of Gillian's personality. The dean definitely wouldn't be the dean if he was interpreted by Jim Rash. That's part of why I love this show.
Danny and Donald are Danny and Donald. They MAKE Troy and Abed Troy and Abed.

like I loved the makeup work in guardians of the galaxy 3
Or the puppetry in the dungeons & dragons movie
I am an animation nerd and appreciate it so much because of the work that has to go into animating each frame by hand, even computer animation amazes me by the dedication and love that goes into creating life through pixels and paint it's beautiful
I feel the same about puppetry, the time it takes to craft elaborate suits and puppets, and the love that goes into bringing the characters to life. It's art.
Idk I was just thinking about it.

Personally. I think I’m a little unhinged. But I like it that way.
Not in a “I’m different than other girls!” Mentality but like. More remanant of the weirdo goth in the family of sunshine children. But all the sunshine children are actually great at masking and only take them off around other member of The Family and I’m the only one that wears it proudly on their forehead and like.
Yeah I’m a little unhinged, and I love it. But at least I’m also blunt and forward with the fact that I am so not normal and sometimes feel like multiple someone’s all with varying different arrays of Unhinged and the more you get to know me the more of the different variants you meet.

I want Danny to be the ancient master of space. I want Clockwork to be excited about it. I want Danny to hurt as he grows in power and becomes something even less human. I want Clockwork to not understand Danny’s pain but still trying to comfort him. I want people to write more stories about Space Ancient Danny and Clockwork, but goddamnit, I guess I’m gonna have to do it myself. Update: I'm writing a fic.
