They don't talk again so regulus doesn't see his until his 18th birthday, while he's in the cave, seconds from dying, and an antler with James' initials on his right arm, perfectly paralleling the dark mark

The last thing he ever sees is proof that it was all real and it was all worth it because just for a while they'd been able to have each other, and in another life they would again

regulus is one of the best characters ever to be protagonist of a love story because he’s so prickly and detached on the outside but his inner monologue when he sees someone he likes is literally just please love me back please love me back please never leave even when i try to make you please hold me please love be back- like how is that not foundation for the Best kind of pining in a story

i’m convinced that james would think regulus was giving him the silent treatment every time they had a disagreement, but regulus had seen his brother punished severely and repeatedly for his inability to control his emotions so many times growing up and he’d developed the survival skill of shutting down every time he felt like james was upset with him

thinking about frat boy James who tells Regulus he doesn't do "relationships" and Regulus agrees to just be casual and see other people which is completely fine... until there's a party they both attend with different dates and James sees Regulus with someone else for the first time and he loses his fucking mind

i want james potter who just when he starts dating regulus/lily, is so surprised when the actually want to hang out with him, have dates with him which dont just lead to having sex.

the first time the decide to have a sleepover, things begin to escalate, and after james declines, he makes out to leave, hes told that its fine if they dont have sex, not everything has to end with sex.

and james is just like 🧍‍♂️ when hes told that his worth is not defined by his body. hes so confused because his previous partners always complimented his toned body as they traced their fingers all over them, but when now hes praised for his mind, eyes, heart and soul, he finds that once empty feeling replaced by an ooey gooey one, and he realised oh. this is what love is supposed to feel like.

effie used to let james ‘help’ her to cook while he was growing up, but he always made much more of a mess than actually helping. when regulus moved in, he offered to help effie as a way to give something back, and she taught him everything she knew, recipes and all!

when she died, regulus started cooking for james. it took one dish of effie’s special pasta to send james into a breakdown, because his mum might be gone, but her legacy lives on.

james is very fascinated by muggle cameras. lily and regulus notice this of course and lily pitches an idea: to get james a camera for his birthday. they save up the money they need for a higher quality camera and wrap it up in a fancy box and present it to him on his birthday. the smile james gives them is worth every penny they spent.

they expected the obsession that came after. james took his camera everywhere, always taking pictures, not just of the the scenery or himself, but of his friends and family and most importantly of lily and regulus. what they didn't expect was that james had all of their photos printed and compiled them into an album, decorated it and drew little hearts and stars and flowers on it and wrote down little notes of what had happened the day the photos were taken. he revealed this album to them on their anniversary as a shared gift.
