Just in case anyone else needed to hear this today-

Your health is not your fault. You didn’t do anything to “deserve” this. And you are right, it isn’t fair. You are allowed to feel upset, hurt, angry and jealous that your health, body or mind disables you.

It’s not fair, and that sucks. You are allowed to scream about that as much as you need to.

Watching today’s youth grow up with characters like Charlie Spring, Nick Nelson, Mike Wheeler, Will Byers, and so many others who are not only creating an entirely new class of fan culture, but setting the stage for long-overdue conversations gives me hope for the future.

They’re placing young men’s mental health center stage and reminding everyone that reaching out for help does not make you weak, it means you’re strong enough to pull yourself out of your darkest moments. I’m honored to live in the era of groundbreaking mainstream television and witness the life-saving conversations taking place around them. Everyone working on these shows (and countless others) are out here saving lives and giving people like me who grew up feeling like a mistake hope. Reminding us that it does get better, if you have the courage to reach out and grab the freedom for yourself.

(I’m ridiculously excited for Thursday, can you tell?)

Watching Deadpool & Wolverine for the fifth time and there’s a couple sitting next to me. He’s obviously a Marvel fan and she’s just…there. He’s having to lean over during the movie and explain things to her and ya know what that’s fine I get it, not everyone is into Marvel movies. But what got me was before the movie even started and a car commercial with Chris Evan’s comes on and she goes “Oh! Didn’t he play Superman??”

And I’m just there like:

A poem about not being ok

It’s ok to not be ok they tell you.

It’s ok to not be ok they tell you. And yet they judge you when when basic tasks become exhausting.

It’s ok to not be ok they tell you. But when you want to cry they say it’s not that bad. 

It’s ok to not be ok they tell you. But when your grades are slipping they tell you try harder.

It’s ok to not be ok they tell you. But when you sleep all day they say you are procrastinating.

It’s ok to not be ok they tell you. But when your friends text you and you don’t respond it’s because you are rude.

It’s ok to not be ok they tell you. But when you leave marks on your skin it’s because you want attention.

It’s ok to not be ok they tell you. But when you don’t have the energy to clean they tell you you’re lazy.

It’s ok to not be ok they tell you. But when you feel like giving up they tell you it’s never that bad.
