The real-world impact of Lore Olympus
i.e. do your research Rachel
Trigger warning: racism, fetishization, appropriation, mentions of SA
Long post ahead
A while ago, someone told me that Lore Olympus was just a silly little comic written out of boredom. That it was made to be "funny". They told me that "[I] can't hope [for] an extremely [well-written] story when it was just made with the intention to make something goofy" and that if Rachel actually wanted to make something serious like I had, she would write a book and not a comic.
At the time of this exchange, it was past 1 a.m. and I was exhausted. I did not want to argue with this person and it simply wasn't worth my time or energy in the moment.
But looking back at that (mostly one-sided) interaction, I can't help but think that there is so much wrong with that point of view. Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion about Lore Olympus, whether good or bad. But Lore Olympus isn't just some silly little nothing comic about nothing important. It is a comic that actively appropriates and erases Greek Culture. It is a comic that has no respect for the actual stories that have been passed down over thousands of years whether by word of mouth or written text. It is a comic that perpetuates a false narrative and harmful stereotypes about characters or certain groups of people. So, no, it's not just a silly little comic.
Incorrect information
Here’s an example of what I mean:
When I was doing research for my post about the 10 year time skip, I looked up Leuce to reconfirm the little information I knew about her. Wanna guess the first thing that popped up about her?
A Lore Olympus Wiki article.
Okay. How about Minthe? Hundreds of pictures of her from Lore Olympus and a LO Wiki article as one of the top 3 results. Both character are horribly represented in LO and unfortunately there isn’t really any documented stories or records that can refute how LO paints them. Because of this, other characters in Greek Mythology like Leuce and Minthe, whose stories have little to no documentation, stand to suffer the most harm from deliberate misrepresentation on Rachel’s part.
Of course well-known and better documented figures in Greek mythology face slander as well. What about Thetis or Leto? How about Apollo? All of their portrayals in LO are HORRIBLE. I have seen people online absolutely drag them to filth not because they're upset about how the character is portrayed compared to their mythological counterpart, but because they have no knowledge of how they are actually portrayed outside of LO. They just assume that's how the characters are. Similarly, people who have either very little or no prior knowledge of Greek Mythology and Culture would look at the comic and go "Yep, sounds legit. It must be true." and go about thinking that what is portrayed in LO is accurate to what was transcribed thousands of years ago.
Creative interpretations and racism/fetishization within LO
Don’t get me wrong. Creative interpretations and artistic liberties can be great. When they’re done tastefully. I personally think if done correctly, a Greek myth spun in a modern way has the potential be very good. But that's not what we were given.
Characters like Minthe, Leuce, and Thetis (all nymphs btw) are portrayed as trashy tramps who put out and are used as a foil sabotage Persephone and/or her relationship with Hades. Compare that to Greek Mythology where in the Iliad, Thetis is very well-respected by the gods, particularly Hera. Unfortunately, other similar characters like satrys (and basically any character that isn’t a god) are usually portrayed as a low-class POC that can be easily exploited, manipulated, or used as a temporary villain/lover/pawn to “get back” at Persephone, our white-coded protagonist who can do no wrong.
Additionally, there is a clear race/class bias against characters like nymphs in LO. We see many cases scattered throughout the comic of gods like Hera or Aphrodite referring to nymphs as "trash" or "low class" or the idea that nymphs do not belong with gods being heavily implied if not outright said. I cannot tell you how often I've seen Minthe be called some variant of "cheap" by the readers of LO. Even Persephone (who created the flower nymphs) treats them with such disrespect. She frequently calls them some variant of "stupid" or "simple" like saying how they're not the sharpest crayons in the box even though she's the one WHO MADE THEM. However, it's so odd not really to note that nymphs like Echo, Amphitrite, or Psyche (who was previously disguised as a nymph) are not discriminated against. This is because they are liked or trusted by the gods they are around and ergo are often portrayed as the "good ones", which is a disgusting mindset to have.
We also see the fetishization of nymphs in the comic that is disturbingly similar to the fetishization of women who are Black, Asian, or Latina. It is a known fact that Hades has a flower nymph fetish. Not only is this implied in the comic, but Rachel stated it outright in an old Patreon post. Nymphs are also generally treated as sex-symbols, disposable, and as a lesser-than. Zeus frequently displays this behavior by abandoning nymphs he knocked up in the mortal realm.
For example, when Persephone finds out Apollo is dating Daphne, she isn't upset he's dating her friend. She's upset he's dating a flower nymph, beings that are generally considered to be "rare", "dumb", and objects of sexual desire. Ew.
Even on the Lore Olympus website (loreolympians.com) nymphs are regarded as "beautiful", "desirable", and "very exotic". And when they're not described in a sexual manner they're say it with me now regarded as "low class" or "workers" for some kind of god/goddess.
Final thoughts
So not only is the characterization of characters like Minthe or Thetis harmful to Greek culture and the stories that are so ingrained in their society, but it is also perpetuating harmful stereotypes about people of color and women who are confident in their sexuality.
Of course, the characters within Greek Mythology had their own issues. Zeus was a serial rapist, many of the goddesses deemed to be "feminist" by today's standards were actually horribly misogynistic looking at you Athena. But 1. that's just how things were back then (but that does not make it right) and 2. all of the good, the bad, and the ugly is still there in Greek Mythology. They're not denying how fucked up it is, but they're also not changing their history to better fit their own narrative or the narrative of the modern world. It exists, it happened, but now it is studied and called out by historians.
Rachel, on the other hand, is doing exactly that. She is actively changing the Greek's cultural history to better fit her fic's narrative. She is constantly sweeping things under the rug or going "No this is how it ACTUALLY happened". Lore Olympus is marketed as a "feminist retelling" yet somehow, it takes allllll the ugly parts from Greek Mythology (rape, incest, problematic age gaps, dubious consent, etc.), mixes it with a majority of the issues we have in the modern world (white feminism, rape-apologists/rape culture, grooming, fetishization of certain minority groups, etc.) and then amplifies the concoction to 20. Lore Olympus cannot be a "progressive, feminist, retelling" and also have characters that are morally apprehensive/come straight from the ancient myths. It does not work. In fact, IMO it makes all the problems from both eras worse.
News flash: actual cultures that are still thriving today are not your toys. They are not "made up". They matter. Do better.

Aithusa - “light of the sun”, Ancient Greek (Merlin 2011) Incorrect. Aithusa - veranda with an open ceiling to let light in. Aethusa - Lover of Apollo. Grandmother of Orpheus. 1064 Aethusa - An asteroid without a belt, orbiting the sun every 1,481 days. Aethusa cynapium - Poison parsley. The only member of the genus Aethusa.
Arthur’s bane was set in stone when Aithusa was thrown in the pit; her dragonlord protecting the King of Camelot. Merlin could’ve go save her, he couldn’t even look after her; he “couldnt” leave Arthur unprotected and a baby dragon in Camelot was as good as a lamb in a butcher’s shop. He couldn’t follow the baby whose name meant she was supposed to let the light in. The only dragon born after the Purge. And the endling if she survived Kilgharrah. Kilgharrah who set Merlin down the path of his destiny - to protect the Once and Future King even if it meant killing children. Even if it set a pattern of codependency where Merlin could not exist without Arthur that would make it anathema to be a dragon lord unless he needed to dominate a dragon. He couldn’t be. He had to protect Arthur. To protect Arthur he had to be Merlin the servant, not Merlin. Emrys. The Last Dragon Lord. No opportunity to change that could be taken. Arthur would die because of it. So Kilgharrah lied. Pity it put Aithusa in that pit.

Dead Lovers’ Lane
One shot fic, requested by @sincerelyaliciaamarie
…
I stand at the cemetery gates, feeling a little stupid. Well, a lot stupid. Who the fuck agrees to a date at the cemetery? How do you even dress for a date at a cemetery? I stand by the railing in my black skinny jeans, black converse low tops and a ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ shirt, featuring one of my favourite men - Robert Smith - on the front with his guitar. My long brown hair is straightened, hanging down and hiding half of my face. I am wearing very little in the way of makeup: some clear lipgloss and black pencil eyeliner.
I obsess over my choice in attire, wondering if I should’ve worn something girlier or showed a bit more skin. Then again, skinny jeans and band shirts are all I wear, and he must like me to have asked me out, right?
My mind flitters to that moment in our high school hallway. Mike and Jared were being complete dicks as usual, but this time turned their sights on Ville. He’d always been so quiet, disconnected, headphones on. We had that in common. I guess that’s why it pissed me off so much when they shoved him into the lockers and kicked his books. I had told them to go and fuck themselves, and helped Ville pick the books up, but in doing so for the first time I noticed how green his eyes were and almost became catatonic. It took his long fingers to brush mine for my trancelike state to break. Later that day he had waited by my locker to ask me out.
Fast-forward to now, I feel restless, hopeful this isn’t one big joke. I run my fingers across the rusty iron gates, entertaining myself with the slight ringing sound emanating from the metal. My finger brushes something sharp. “Ow, fuck!” I curse, examining my index finger. A pinprick of blood oozes from my small wound.
“I would be careful…” I hear in that deep baritone I have become so sensitive to, and spin around on my heel. I am face to face with those emerald eyes that have haunted me since. Ville swiftly lifts my palm to his mouth and sucks the blood from the tip of my finger.
“W-what are you doing?” I ask, weirded out but completely mesmerised.
“Just in case anything has entered your bloodstream through your wound… the safe thing is to suck it out.” He smiles.
“And swallow it?!” I raise my eyebrows.
“I don’t mind…” he smirks, running his hand through his hair. I take in his appearance. Black trousers, doc martens, a Black Sabbath shirt and a black suit jacket. Smart casual. My heart flutters. “Shall we?” he gestures to the cemetery entrance. I look up and follow his lead, feeling ever curious.
“I love your Cure shirt, by the way.” He compliments. We walk through the entrance and along a small stone path in between headstones.
“Oh, um yeah, thanks.” My cheeks grow pink at my awkward acceptance of his compliment. “I love them so much, Disintegration is…”
“Incredibly overrated.” He stops, and turns to me with an apologetic smile. “All the Cure fans love that album the best, but for me it’s-“
“Bloodflowers.” I interject. “If you had let me finish, I would’ve said that Disintegration is the most popular album, but my favourite is Bloodflowers.” I say with righteous indignation, annoyed at being interrupted.
“My apologies, I made an incorrect assumption.” He looks down at me, biting his moist lip. I watch it turn pink. “Bloodflowers is my favourite too.” I smile back. We have even more in common than I thought.
We reach a clearing in the cemetery where the grass subsides, and the space is occupied by a beautiful white statue, surprisingly bright and well preserved. It appears to be a some sort of Greek statue of a woman and her child, adorned in cloth. Ville leans against her and reaches in his pocket. He takes out a cigarette and lighter. I watch as he lights the cigarette, wraps his lips around the tan tip, closes his eyes and softly inhales his vice. His slender fingers flip the cigarette in my direction in offering. I impolitely refuse.
“I’m good without lung cancer, thanks.” I dismiss.
“Hmm, these things cause cancer? Never knew.” He responds sarcastically, producing another cigarette from his pocket and placing it between the stone lips of our statuesque friend. He humorously tries to light it.
“You’re very cavalier about death.” I observe.
Ville smirks, and with a flick of his wrist gestures around him. “Look where we are; we’re all gonna die someday. Eat the apple, Eve.”
I angrily yank the cigarette from his mouth, take a drag and blow it into his face, before dropping it on the ground and stamping on it.
The smoke dances in the daylight, swirling around us until the only thing visible to me are his beautiful green eyes. We gravitate closer, intoxicated, and his lips find mine. He kisses me gently, sucking softly on my bottom lip.
He pulls back to look at me, now the smoke has subsided. My mouth falls slightly open at the surprise of his affection.
He runs his hand through his hair and looks down, seemingly shy. “Thank you for helping me the other day…”
“With the books?” I ask. “Oh, that was nothing.”
“It was everything.” He looks up again and paralyses me with sea green irises. “In a world where people are cruel and selfish, it means everything.”
I look down, kicking the dirt with my dusty cons, feeling ever so self conscious. My curtain of hair falls forward, obscuring my face. His pale hand reaches out to sweep my hair behind my ear. “It is criminal to hide a face so beautiful.”, he whispers. His fingers find my chin and guide my gaze back up to him. “Can I kiss you… properly this time?” I nod, unable to speak. His lips press against mine and his warm tongue sweeps between, requesting access. I part my lips and meet his tongue with mine. His hands explore my hair as I wrap mine around his waist, lost in his sweet kiss.
A sudden gust of wind blows, leading my long brown locks to wrap around us. We open our eyes at the sudden sensation. Ville chuckles and I giggle, as he presses his forehead to mine.
“The elements approve.” He grins.
“So does Maria.” I laugh, and gesture to the statue.
“Why Maria?” He cocks his head one side curiously.
“I don’t know, she looks like a Maria?” I shrug. Ville holds out his large palm and I place my hand in his as we continue our walk.
“So, um, why the cemetery?” I implore, inquisitively.
“There’s beauty in being laid… to rest.” He smirks and my cheeks feel hot. What exactly is he suggesting?
We continue our Summer stroll until the path comes to a sudden end. In front of us are hundreds of gravestones and far as our eyes can see. Acres of stone and marbles and offerings of flowers and colourful trinkets. It is as sad as it is beautiful.
I take a long breath as we look out into the distance. “I can see the beauty in death. It’s incredibly peaceful here.” I sigh. “Where to next? There’s no path.”
Ville looks down, “This is my favourite place to frequent when I’ve had enough of humanity. There are hundreds of souls here, listening, not judging.”
The wind continues to blow gently as I kneel to read a beautifully carved white marble headstone. “Here lies Marco and Maria. Beloved husband and wife.” My eyes widen. “Maybe her name really was Maria!” I say, masking my disconcert at this information.
Ville kneels next to me as I continue to read, “Michael and Evelyn, Vincent and Isobel… they, they’re all couples.” I look at Ville, wondering why he has brought me here.
“I call it Dead Lovers’ Lane… the point where the path ends and so does life.” My eyebrows raise in fearful anticipation. “I imagine this is where we can go, when we get tired of living.” He says, eyelids heavy and expression morose.
I cup his cheek in my palm in comfort and he smiles. “Well then…” I decide, interlocking the fingers of my free hand with his. “Let’s head down Dead Lovers’ Lane.”

I was bored so decided to write some minor stuff.
Favorite couples of Greek Mythology! (Canon and Non-Canon)
I’ll be honest some of my reasons or explanations will sound like crack. Some I actually want to make a fanfic of! (Even though I’m still in the process of writing a Non-King one, but writers block there). Keep in mind I am tired so all these are randomly explained without full reason why I like them.
Canon Mythology:
Hera / Zeus: Alright this one is probably the one that gets most trashed on, but it’s honestly great! Yes they have issues, but they do love each other. It’s complicated, but they’re gods- I can’t even explain why it’s great as thousands of thoughts run through my head about them, but yeah.
Ariadne / Dionysus: This one I found rather neat! Theseus was a prick and left her on an island, then Dionysus and his party bus came along and picked her up, then later on turned to husband and wife! I mean they’ve never even fought in any myths that I’m aware of, and just seem so chill.
Aphrodite / Ares: Ngl, this is my all time favorite one. Ares literally fought on her side in the Trojan war, going against his mother! And he’s like a devoted son, and he picked Aphrodite- love. And yes they both have their own lovers, but they just have a thing that feels like it’d be constant.
bonus ones I won’t go much into, enjoy but don’t think of too much:
- Achilles / Patroclus: Had to be obvious, but I haven’t read the Iliad in a few years so can’t explain much.
- Apollo / Hyacinthus: Love the tragedy of it all, like it seemed genuinely sweet, then the discuss came along.
Non-Canon Favorite couples of Greek Mythology!
Hades / Prometheus: Some who actually read my blog could tell this is my all time favorite pairing. Yes there’s like no myths of them together- but the concept! I personally imagine they met during the Titanomachy, and had a quiet companionship. Later on when humanity came along, Hades helped a tiny bit- gave the basic idea for a soul while Prometheus did the rest, and led to Hades making the Underworld comfortable for the deceased, since it was his beloved friends creation. And the possible angst?? Prometheus getting his wife or when he gets chained to the mountain, and Hades mourning in silence.
Demeter / Hecate: They seem neat, what can I say? Hecate helped Demeter search for her daughter, even though she’s typically seen as a resident of the underworld- she helped! I like to just imagine women tired of others bs, and if I was confident in writing I’d likely have made 100 fics revolved around them.
Aphrodite / Persephone: The two considered the most beautiful! When I read the whole myth focusing on Psyche, I immediately thought rivals to lovers for this pairing. The whole box of beauty, sending a death curse back. Just two incredible goddesses. I’d like to imagine the two of them were friends when Persephone was younger! Though of course in my AU (I’m gonna call it Mykos verse or smth) since Persephone and Aphrodite aren’t married, the two of them would have likely hung out a lot.
Additional ones I like but don’t think of often:
- Ares/Heracles: I will not explain my reasoning behind this, as it’s dedicated to a fanfic I have solely in my brain.
- Apollo/Ares: Saw a few posts of them, and thought they were cute!
- Hephaestus/Ares: Thought it’d be funny, great potential for angst, whole enemies thing, etc. it’d be so toxic, it’d be so hurt, like I could see them digging into each other and ripping metaphorically into the others heart. Like many centuries of insults, that whole cheating thing leaves wounds. (I have too many au’s and brain rots for them)
- Hera/Zeus’s former lovers: Now that one was interesting, can’t remember the blog but the whole thing and incorrect quotes was rather sweet.
- Poseidon/Hades: This is Greek mythology, definitely not the worst pairing. I read a fic of it once, and thought it was kinda nice. Besides the whole idea started when I heard of the Hadalpelagic zone in the ocean, and thought it could be a fun meeting spot between the two.
And that’s the end!
