Yesterday two of my coworkers were trying to get a stuck wheel off a 2-ton. One of them, who lives in a quite rural town, got it off in an unconventional way and said "that's an old farmer's trick." The other said "yeah, maybe a Jewish farmer."
I didn't quite hear what he said so I went up to him and asked, "hey, what was that you said about a Jewish farmer?" He said, "oh, I should've said a Polish farmer," and then reminded me that his family is from Poland. It wasn't until then that I realized the point of his joke was that "Jewish farmer" meant stupid or incompetent. He knows I'm Jewish, but he's a bit of a jokester and doesn't always think before he speaks. I'm wasn't sure what to say about it, and he seemed to know what he said was wrong, but I think it'll stick with me for a long time

this is related to a previouw question but im guessinf you believe in ignorance over malice in regards to stuff like that?
I like to assume ignorance over malice 90% of the time because doing so has let me educate plenty of kind folks willing to learn rather than completely shutting them down. If some of the people in my life hadn't shown the same kindness, I dunno if I'd be as happy as I am as a queer trans woman in a relationship! I like to believe most folk aren't unkind, at least not on purpose, and letting people have that chance has let me make some real difference. For folks who need to just take a break or keep boundaries, I totally understand, but for me I'm lucky enough that misconceptions don't usually bother me so I like to use them as teaching moments if folks are willing to listen

Maybe I’m just chronically out of the loop but I didn’t know delivery robots and self-driving cars and AR glasses were real until this year. Like I thought whenever people referred to them, they were just discussing a hypothetical future of shitty technology and not an actual thing that already exists in tech-savvy cities. I find it unsettling and I don’t trust it.

From the March 1, 2024 review by Michael A. Cohen:
According to a new book, White Rural Rage: The Threat to American Democracy, these aren’t hurtful, elitist stereotypes by Acela Corridor denizens and bubble-dwelling liberals… they’re facts.
...
In a book filled with reams of data to back up their arguments, Schaller and Waldman show that rural whites “are the demographic group least likely to accept notions of pluralism and inclusion” and are far less likely to believe that diversity makes America stronger.
In rural America, support for Donald Trump’s Muslim travel ban ran 15 points higher than in urban areas. Rural whites are 13 points more likely to view LGBTQ+ Americans in a negative light, and express fear and anger toward immigrants—both legal and undocumented—at much higher rates than other Americans. Less than half, 46 percent, say diversity in their communities is something they value.
...
But the problems in rural America run deeper than hostility toward minorities and facts. Rural residents disproportionately express hostility toward basic democratic principles. They are more likely to favor restrictions on the press, oppose checks on presidential power, endorse white Christian nationalist views, and support efforts to restrict voting access.
...
Rural America has made one of the worst deals in American politics—they slavishly support a Republican Party that not only does little to stop their inexorable decline but actually makes it worse.
The GOP’s anti-abortion agenda means rural maternity wards got shut down. Opposition to public broadband most directly harms rural America, where there is little incentive for private companies to set up service. Republican attacks on higher education have a disproportionate influence on underserved rural universities. And anti-vax attitudes have led to COVID death rates that rival or surpass far denser population areas—an outcome that makes little public health sense but is easily explained by partisan politics.

For UNEND, I'm very excited both for more general Un lore (places! people! creatures!) and to see if perhaps there will be echoes, decades on, of what happened to the Trust after it collapsed. Will there be the occasional person who still wears valor beads, a little chipped and worn with age? Do they wear them with nostalgia? Longing? Bitterness? Stubbornness? Has the valor and caenum tree on Midst developed any particular cultural significance? What has become of the Highest Light? Did the people there adapt and reform a new society with different rules? Is there an offshoot cult that tried to keep going and got even weirder? Do people keep their or their family's old abacuses in a box like heirloom jewelry that is no longer fashionable? I am gnashing my teeth in a calm and collected manner.
