Ask the IWWO cast!!

IWWO, actually named If We Were Older is a horror visual novel style indie game featuring two boys in a special care unit, something like an ICU, but less on the ‘Intensive’ side.

IWWO features two best friends, Aryan and Ren, who met several years ago in the same hospital, now with worsening conditions, way-too-busy nurses, yet an overly friendly and perfect nurse and the constant threat of Ren’s own body turning on him, they work together to scavenge their own food and even choose to do tasks for other patients.

When the nurses start looking a little… off… it’s up to Aryan and his best friend to figure out what’s going on, before the nurses start going after them, too.

IWWO isn’t yet released, unfortunately, and as of writing this i had planned for the year that this game was just in its concept phase i planned to make the whole game solo, but it’s me and my friend Veri (the lead character designer) working on this alone, but we are open to a bigger team!!

we’re working on a discord server, and that’ll be announced and released when it’s done! in the meantime, here are the ask-ables!

I always knew the bad ending depiction of Carlo was unsettling, and not for the murderous reasons. It only further supports the theory I liked that someone brought up of Geppetto basically infantilizing his depiction of his son, since the “real” (brainwashed murderous obedient PUPPET) Carlo…

… doesn’t have freckles.

The blood smatter isn’t masking anything, you just literally can’t see any. And his eyes are brown (weird, right??). Well blue eyes can develop later in a child’s life, as do freckles. It’s not entirely uncommon to see baby photos of a blue-eyed adult with them sporting brown eyes, same as freckled adult with clear skin as kids.

Every time Helluva Boss or Hazbin Hotel has a glimpse of genuinely GOOD WRITING, I go insane. Both of these shows feel like edging to me, like they will tease me with these bangers and then leave me to dry EVERY DAMN TIME.

Egotober Day 13: Mirror

What did it mean to be a mirror of someone? So alike, but so different at the same time. That was the question that ran through Roman’s mind as he sat in bed and sketched out a moment from the DND campaign Thomas was doing with his friend Terrence. It was such a creative game that he couldn’t resist.

His room, or rather their room, the room of Creativity was one that Thomas hadn’t visited yet. Being it was split between himself and Remus it was….interesting to say the least.

Half of it was a bedroom/study that looked like it belonged in a castle. Four poster bed, many comfortable pillows and blankets in gold and red with cream accents. Disney merchandise along shelves, a bookshelf, window with a nook overlooking the forest and a desk with paint and ink marks all over it. Roman wasn’t as methodical as Logan about his neatness, at least all the time. His art supplies were in a system only he recognized, but the room was neat enough you saw the floor and he kept his bed made and clothes clean.

Remus’ half….not so much. His rose red eyes looked over to where his twin was on his stomach, kicking his legs as he was likewise occupied with his own sketchbook. In shades of black and green with silver accents, his room was a full on mess that would make the clean minded all faint on sight. Clothes piled everywhere, bedding in disarray and the only reason the prince didn’t need a gas mask was because Imagination filtered it out. There was horror merchandise on shelves, a bookshelf with dog eared, torn books, a scuffed mess covered desk and the broken window overlooked a darker forest.

But there was something that was a familiar sight to him. Art supplies in a system almost the same as his, even if they were more covered in dried paint than his own.

The Duke’s poisonous green eyes looked up, his mustache quirked as he grinned mischievously at the Prince. He propped his cheek on his hand. “What’s that look for brother dearest? Oh no, you’ve been thinking haven’t you? I smell the smoke from here.”

Roman rolled his eyes and despite himself a smile tugged at his lips as he watched Remus wave a hand around in faux disgust. He scoffed to hide a chuckle.

“Ha-Ha very funny Remus. Yes, I have been thinking. About how we’re a mirror of each other, we’re so alike…yet so different.”

Remus hummed softly and he rolled over onto his back and wriggled up to set his head in Roman’s lap.

“It’s not that big a shock, if you want I can take you to meet Mary. She can give you quite the shock, that girl is something else! And maybe try to bite your lips off, but I can smack her with the morning star and she’ll know you’re not food. We went to this great bar for drinks-“

He pinched the bridge of his nose in the way of exasperated siblings everywhere and he cut off his twin’s ramble quickly but gently as he began to idly stroke Remus’ hair.

“I mean it’s just a bit confusing since we weren’t always twins. I did compare you to looking in a funhouse mirror before.”

Remus let out a content hum at the affection before he responded voice soft for once.

“It’s not really that far from the truth Roman. We may have been Creativity in full once, but when we had to we split. I was a bit more like you when Thomas was younger…but as time passed he saw two different kinds of creativity. I got most of my power from when he was a teenager. You know that time where everyone is stupid, gross, into the dark and taboo.”

“And that’s where the Intrusive Thought part of you began to manifest and where my Passion did as well.”

Roman finished for him in a similar soft tone. He sighed and twisted s bit, so he could curl around Remus and set his head on his stomach. He smiled as he felt their hands subconsciously join and Remus squeezed softly. They both knew that the prince only thought like this due to how he wanted to ignore his mental crisis of everything not really being as black and white as he’d thought, that had reared it’s head when Janus properly introduced himself and challenged everything he thought he understood.

Virgil had helped as much as he could, and he had tried bless his anxious heart, but it still wasn’t that simple for Roman to confront that part of himself yet. He knew he would soon enough, and when he did he’d have not just the others beside him, but his twin as well. Because they were each other’s mirror, where one went so did the other.

just. julian getting to express the rage and confusion and conflicted emotions that would come with the person that abused him for years changing completely out of nowhere and turning into the older brother he'd always wanted.

my bookclubs' inability to understand nuance and to either misinterpret or completely ignore things blatantly stated in the text continues to drive me up the wall and yet i keep going because im desperate to get out of the house and make connections with people, especially people who also read. but after this last bookclub, where im still angry and frustrated a whole 24 hours later, im wondering if i should just stop because it doesn't get better and maybe i need to accept that it's not going to

The whole "the brain isn't fully mature until age 25" bit is actually a fairly impressive bit of psuedoscience for how incredibly stupid the way it misinterprets the data it's based on is.

Okay, so: there's a part of the human brain called the "prefrontal cortex" which is, among other things, responsible for executive function and impulse control. Like most parts of the brain, it undergoes active "rewiring" over time (i.e., pruning unused neural connections and establishing new ones), and in the case of the prefrontal cortex in particular, this rewiring sharply accelerates during puberty.

Because the pace of rewiring in the prefrontal cortex is linked to specific developmental milestones, it was hypothesised that it would slow down and eventually stop in adulthood. However, the process can't directly be observed; the only way to tell how much neural rewiring is taking place in a particular part of the brain is to compare multiple brain scans of the same individual performed over a period of time.

Thus, something called a "longitudinal study" was commissioned: the same individuals would undergo regular brain scans over a period of mayn years, beginning in early childhood, so that their prefrontal development could accurately be tracked.

The longitudinal study was originally planned to follow its subjects up to age 21. However, when the predicted cessation of prefrontal rewiring was not observed by age 21, additional funding was obtained, and the study period was extended to age 25. The predicted cessation of prefrontal development wasn't observed by age 25, either, at which point the study was terminated.

When the mainstream press got hold of these results, the conclusion that prefrontal rewiring continues at least until age 25 was reported as prefrontal development finishing at age 25. Critically, this is the exact opposite of what the study actually concluded. The study was unable to identify a stopping point for prefrontal development because no such stopping point was observed for any subject during the study period. The only significance of the age 25 is that no subjects were tracked beyond this age because the study ran out of funding!

It gets me when people try to argue against the neuroscience-proves-everybody-under-25-is-a-child talking point by claiming that it's merely an average, or that prefrontal development doesn't tell the whole story. Like, no, it's not an average – it's just bullshit. There's no evidence that the cited phenomenon exists at all. If there is an age where prefrontal rewiring levels off and stops (and it's not clear that there is), we don't know what age that is; we merely know that it must be older than 25.

another random thing that stands out to me rewatching Steven Universe as an adult:

throughout the show there's this clear Vibe that Steven has inherited some big magical destiny, right? and it makes sense narratively: he's the son of Rose Quartz, leader of the rebellion, now being raised by her friends who were the last remaining survivors of an interstellar war. he's like a human child in most ways, except he has magical powers that start to become more obvious as he's getting older. no one like him has ever existed before. it's a big deal. raising him and figuring out how he's going to grow is its own unique challenge, because nobody knows what to expect. so of course there's this magical destiny vibe, given all that.

What's interesting to me, though, is that this magical destiny is in no way literally, physically present in the story, it's just something everyone kinda feels. Like, there's not some ancient prophecy about a half-gem, half-human savior. He's not the Chosen One in any literal sense, he just happens to give off Chosen One vibes. And I say that's interesting because it means that the fact he was kinda raised with this Chosen One vibe is completely a decision everyone around him made, for better or for worse. And the show is aware of this, because the weight of Rose's legacy and everyone's expectations of him is a constant theme, and as Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl all grow and develop, they also realize the downsides of them putting those expectations on a child. Like, Steven spends his whole childhood being told about how great Rose was, and how because he's inherited her gem he will probably inherit her powers - and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Imagine how awful things could have been if Steven had no exposure to the Gems and no knowledge of what they were or how they worked, and then his powers started coming in? It was hard enough even when he was surrounded by the most qualified Gem Experts on Earth. But being primed for all of this "you're going to have your mother's magical powers" stuff put a heavy weight on his shoulders, and then the fact that nobody else quite knew how his abilities worked meant he was constantly faced with the adults in his life looking to him with concern because they didn't know what was happening with him. That's gotta leave an impression on a kid - and, well, throughout the show and especially in SU Future we definitely see that it does.

I like the way the show handles the pressure that's put on him, and the fact that everyone is just... trying their best in a completely unprecedented situation. Nobody knows what to do or how to raise this kid, and that inevitably causes problems but everyone is trying. And Steven can feel that everyone is trying without knowing what to do and he just wants to help and not be a burden and none of his caretakers have said that he's a burden but he can feel everyone's confusion and concern and the expectations he's not living up to and he cares so much, about everyone, about everything. He's in an extremely unique position that grants him opportunities to help that nobody else has, and he feels like he's failing everyone if he can't fulfill that, and in the end it never should have been his job to fix things but somebody had to try. Somebody had to try, and he was one of the only people with the ability to stop the Diamonds, stop the war, stop the lies, stop his world and everyone on it from being destroyed... and he was just a kid.
