book 2 in a YA urban fantasy duology
where a plague caused people to suddenly gain magic based on playing card suits & giving them animalistic traits, where a group of trained Empowered are trained to defend people against evil magic
a power hungry organisation with eldritch ink monsters are trying to gain power and get control over the awakened suits & the main crew have to work together to strengthen their magic and defeat them, to save their city and all of magic

#Bleeding Heart#I think knowing what to expect I enjoyed this a bit more than book 1 overall#though tbh I never really cared about the high stakes plot stuff. I like the characters though!#very urban fantasy magical girl anime vibes- (I think - I’m not a big anime watcher in general tbh)#but this kind of genre/vibe is not really my kind of thing (or: also saw someone compare it to rwby? which I don’t know much about)#I’m sure there’s people out there that love that though!#I definitely forgot some stuff from book 1. for example finding out late in this one that she’s 17???#I swear to god they were older and this was adult/NA when I read the first one….I think YA probably makes more sense though#I also thought iori and ellen were already together lol#There’s like a lore explanation late in the book that I feel like we could have gotten earlier….#maybe it was in book 1 and I forgot? but I don’t think so#the first half is quite slow and character focused and the second half all plot and action#It’s very focused on the main characters relationships - I particularly like Ellen and Alex’s sibling relationship#and the friend with benefits / QPR that develops between Alex and Kyani!#we have an ace mc with a pan bf and a demidemi/aro bi QPR (both m/f)#everyone else is queer and/or trans#asexual books#aromantic books#FINALLY DONE ALL MY REVIEWPOSTS FOR 2024
